Once a diabetic always diabetic! Just controlled. I thought the same a long time ago that I wasn't diabetic anymore my A1C was perfect, but I wasn't checking my glucose everyday. I found out a good a1c really doesn't always mean that your diabetes is controlled because if you are having days where your glucose is in the 50's and other days where it's running 300 when the ac is taken it averages out, but is 51 really a controlled glucose or 300 NO. If you aren't testing your glucose everyday you really don't know if your diabetes is controlled. My regular doctor said my diabetes was controlled. I went to a specialist and he said test your glucose. I did especially when I didn't feel well and found I was going into hypoglycemic shock on the days that I didn't feel well and other days I was close to 300 some days were regular, but my diabetes definitely wasn't under control.

My sister (now 78) was put on a drug trial 4 years ago for type 2.
She injects herself every week. Because it’s a trial she doesn’t have to pay for it.
She’s lost 50kg and most of her muscle mass.
She’s mentally unwell, and is living on cream cakes, milkshakes with whipped cream on top, KFC etc.
    No nutritional food.
She’s loving it because she keeps losing weight.
As her unofficial carer, I’ve been trying to have it stopped, but the specialist who put her on it has given her permission to stay on it.
She’s become toxic towards me for daring to meddle in her life.
This isn’t going to end well.

My deceased friend took trulicity a weekly injectable her a1c was well within reasonable for type 2 after several months the dr increased the dose bc it was covered by ins. That injectable aggravated a bowel issue. She remained very heavy and ate whatever she wanted. I guess Dr's don't teach dietary restrictions.
Personally I'm type 2 that came with an autoimmune condition. Some days I can regulate better than others which is an advantage with a sliding scale for insulin based on glucose now and intended carb intake. Rarely do I crash.

Part of it is also the gym culture, many women get their body fat % too low and as they age, their face look very weathered. I call it the "hungry face" syndrome of mature women. While their physique is toned, their face looks hungry. Sometimes it's better to carry an extra 5 pounds, to fill out the facial fat pads.

I’m glad you guys are talking about the impact this is having on diabetic patients. I’m a type 1 diabetic and this drug was a game changer for us. I don’t know as much about its efficacy for type 2, but I cannot tell you how many type 1’s have been able to take their lives back, stop the crazy highs and the daily rollercoaster of balancing food, stress, activity, and injections to have some semblance of normalcy. Now my pharmacy often can’t get it as the number of vanity scripts grow. And don’t get it twisted - many of these very wealthy people work with cabana physicians who will write the script and get it paid for on their insurances’ dime, as well, whether they need it or not. Wouldn’t be the first drug shortage caused by the rich, and I’m sure it won’t be the last.

It was a Saturday night, we didn't get the insulin until Sunday Afternoon. Not only was it horrible for us but her endocrinologist as well, but that Doctor was wonderful. We worked together to ensure my daughter didn't end up in DKA.
Unless you or your child ever had to hunt down medication to live (not lose weight but live) you can not possibly understand why this is so selfish and wrong!!! Your weight-loss is not more important than a life!!!
Diabetes is a disease that says "whether you eat or not, you will die if you do not take medication" and people who hate themselves so much they'd steal that treatment to control impulsive behavior vs let the diabetics have it to live make me sick! The FDA allowing this is also sick but hey at least we'll have thiner people in the world.

Ozempic was developed by Novo Nordisk in 2012 and approved by the FDA (in the U.S.) in 2017. I would guess the drug has been in distribution, at least for the diabetic population in the U.S. for 5+ years. I am guessing somewhere online there is data on medically observed side effects, however not sure that 1/2 decade of observation is enough to release to the general population for off-label use. However, I am not shocked that people with the means to buy this drug, are buying this drug for specifically for weight loss. Nice of celebrities to be the beta testers on weight loss for the rest of us.😉

Ozempic hasn’t been a secret for many months. Past 45-50 and after menopause, it’s very difficult for most of us women to get weight off. The people that say we should have to suffer to lose it rather than take a drug-I know many people who try to lose weight, but they’d have to either work out 3 hours a day or eat so little they’d starve. Due to health conditions and having to work for a living, and not liking to starve, most of us can’t do those things. I’d try Ozempic if I could afford it without insurance, but it’s like $1000/month since I’m fluffy but not diabetic.

I think there's two categories of people who could be using Ozempic "for weight loss." If they're actually overweight and struggling to lose it, my understanding is that even 10+ pounds could start to put you into type two diabetes so while it might be frustrating for people who've been on it for a long time to get some, it doesn't mean that it's not legit for someone to use it for weight loss if it's really impacting their health. At the same time if someone is using it just to try to lose vanity weight instead of diet and exercise, yeah, that's lousy.

There is no diet in the world however, which will make you magically stay skinny if you go back to binge eating. If what people mean is diets don't solve all your emotional problems which cause you to want to binge eat, then yes, that is true. An eating plan won't cure your psychological problems. Shocker.

Ozempic has recently been approved by the FDA for weight loss. My issue with weight this is that what happens to the body regarding insulin when a person stops taking it after a long term usage? I’m worried that a person’s ability to properly produce insulin will be impaired due to long time use. I also worry about other organs, or bodily functions might be impaired by long term use of this drug. No one has done a study regarding long term usage with abrupt cut off. Usually, the people that are prescribed Ozempic for diabetes are not going to stop using this drug. Everyone’s always looking for the magic pill to make them skinny. Just remember that everything has a price. What is your body trading off for this injection to help you lose weight.

(Comment written before this video premiered):
GLP1 medications should be used by (in descending priority, according to me 🤷‍♀️):
    1. Diabetics
    2. Pre-diabetic obese people
    3. Obese people
    4. Overweight people
    5. People who just want to lose a few pounds
I was in category 2, with high A1C, high glucose, and high BMI. Since starting Saxenda (a cousin of Ozempic, dosed for weight loss vs. diabetes management) and a low dose of a statin:
    1. I’m down 40 lbs, which allows me to be more physically active
    2. My A1C is down, back within the normal range
    3. My 10-year risk of death from a cardiovascular event is less than half of what it was two years ago
With all the supply shortages lately, I haven’t been able to order more Saxenda in several months, and am about to run out. So, from category 3 (with potential for improvement to category 4,) I might soon land back up in category 2 or even cross that line and end up in category 1.
My point is that it’s not as simple as “people wanting to lose weight are preventing diabetics from getting medication.” For many of us, using the medication to lose weight helps prevent us from becoming diabetic in the first place.
I’m hoping you’ll be talking about what it would take to ramp up production of Victoza, Saxenda, Ozempic, Wegovy, etc. 💐

Vanessa is actually wrong that women in their 40's can't lose that amount of weight in a short time. My weight slowly crept up over 10yrs in peri menopause. I am early 50's, I cut back most carbs and ultra processd food and eat mostly fat and protein. I dont count carbs or macros. It's not 'too hard' as she puts it. I lost 60lb and 4 dress sizes in 6 months and have maintained it just fine. I have more energy than I did 10yrs ago.
Her error is in calling it (and treating it as) a diet and then going back to how you ate before. It's a lifestyle change. I'm back in my early 30's/ pre 2nd child weight...smack bang in the middle of BMI Index which i dont agree is nonsense as it's always been a good indicator for me. The whole BMI is rubbish narrative is part of the woke culture nonsense. The only people I hear use that excuse is people who are overweight and addicted to junk food but in denial.

    • @taduh2402
      @taduh2402 5 місяців тому +1

Lambert Adolphe Jacques Quetelet, inventor of the BMI, was a Belgian mathematician who also studied astronomy, statistics and sociology - he was not a physician, nor did he study medicine. The intention was for measuring populations, for the purposes of statistics, not individual health.
The BMI is based on the height & weight of the "average" man based on a sample of White, European men, who Quetelet saw as an "ideal". It doesn't differentiate between muscle mass, bone density & body fat - resulting in most elite athletes being classed as overweight. It also doesn't account for variations in healthy weights & body types between people of various ethnicities, genders & ages. Quetelet's findings inspired Francis Galton - who coined the term eugenics.
Just because it fits well for you, as an individual, does not make it ok, or even accurate. It's great that you feel healthy & well, but you aren't being excluded from access to necessary healthcare because your "BMI" doesn't meet certain requirements, based on a 200 year old, outdated & racist standard of measure that is more harmful than helpful.
**I am healthy, not overweight & not addicted to junk food. Not that anyone can be dismissed or silenced when presenting the above facts.

I'm currently trying intemittant fasting, trying to go 16 hours before eating, it's hard, but it is one way to control the overeating. Plus drinking a bit of vinegar in water before eating is supposed to be good to slow down blood sugar peaks when eating. Too much easy food on offer these days, and it is about self control and that is HARD. Diets do work, it's just they are short lived and therefore the weight loss is short lived.

That said, I did have a friend who’s had three children who passed away in her 70’s who was 100% natural, however, the trade off was that she had no hips, no boobs & was regularly mistaken for a man.

Re using our Aussie actress, Rebel Wilson, if this woman knew anything, she'd know that Rebel fought with her weight for years. When it was foundout by 'Hollywood' that she was working with professionals wanted her stay significantly obese while her medical team wanted her to slim down, 'Hollywood' wanted her to stay the 'fat comedian'. She was upset about it. It's offensive to use Rebel as your photo. She did actually 'work' at weight.

Not always applicable, I personally know a 50 yo. who went from a size 10, pushing an 11 to wearing a size 6 or 5, that that's at least 4 to 5 sizes. Done by intermittent fasting as well as chsnging it up with 3 day fasts. Eating healthy while still enjoying the foods she loves. The occasional binge but then back in track. I believe her next goal it to tone and build muscle. Perhaps while in menopause, losing the impossible belly fat- that one CAN'T lose while in menopause. My point is that everyone is different what works for some doesn't work for others but it can be done in a safe and healthy manner. To be fair this woman was back in her size 0's and 2's after her 1st birth in about 1.5 months of giving birth - apparently lots of water retention. She did realize that although breastfeeding helped she lost weight too quickly.

Not all weight loss injections work. Personally I'm on one. Ive a good bit to lose and having difficultly shifting it so my GP suggested it, however in 8 weeks I've only lost 7lbs and before I get attacked and told to, just stop eating, ive drastically overhauled my diet. The only thing the weight loss inhevtions do for me is make me feel extremely sick.

    • @irestar6
      @irestar6 6 місяців тому +6

Please do not give up on weight loss, if that is something that is going to improve your health. I was 300lbs and over 6 years was able to get down to 150lbs. I've been able to maintain that as well. I'm 5 foot 8, so it's a very healthy weight for me. I spoke to the doctor about getting those tablets that helped and were not the amphetamine or antihistamine based ones. He said that they caused malabsorption issues. Also you had to cut out all fats and if you didn't you have the runs, as a friend who is type two diabetic was put on them. And we need some fats in our diets as they're important for our bodies to work properly.
I did it using a website where I'd diarise all my foods and this meant weighing everything etc but they have a great database. If you're in the UK it's called www.weightlossresources.co.uk
At my weight my calorie limit was almost 3k per day and as I lost weight it would go down.
Weight watchers and all the diet companies don't actually want you to keep the weight off. Because then you'd never come back. They don't explain the diets, which for WW is low fat low GI. And if you look at WW foods, they replace fat with sugar.
I used to be able to eat three quarters of a large dominos pizza by myself. As our stomachs get stretched out. Now I'd eat maybe max of two slices.
But what I didn't do was cut out everything. As then you are almost guaranteed to fail. As it's not possible to keep denying everything in the longer term.
When people start at a diet club of some kind they will often lose up to 10lbs in the first week. This is purely the loss of the glycogens which have built up in the liver over many years. And if people then go back to the club a couple of years later, they don't understand why they don't have this large initial weight loss. Because it takes a lot of years for those glycogens to build up again. And that is often why you feel really sick especially if you try the high protein low carb diets.
Exercise does help a lot. I was very disabled after giving birth so exercise was hard. Initially I could walk 5 minutes or so, but slowly I was able to build this amount. I went to the GP asking for help with my back, as I was limping and had awful sciatica. They just said lose weight. I went back again after I'd lost 6 stone. they go you need to lose weight. I said weigh me. Now compare that to my previous weight. And then reasonably said, if this was weight related, then surely it would be getting better not worse. There is hereditary Degenerative Disc Disease in my family, my dad has it, I have it. I now have lost 8 discs. I'm also allergic to the ibuprofen family of medications so have to take opioids. Which most of the GPs in Central London just refused to prescribe. I was a sent to the pain clinic. Finally had an MRI done which confirmed it etc...They did say that I needed opioids, and I was able to continue my job using those, I was a Barrister. But the sciatica was incredibly debilitating. So they put me on gabapentin. Which turned my brain to swiss cheese and basically ended my career, as I told it was taking those and continue walking with my cane, or rapidly end up in a wheelchair. I had done well and saved a lot of money so I've nothing to complain about there and my husband has a good job. But I am pretty bored and really miss what I used to do.
But before that I was slowly able to up the amount of walking that I did. And at weekends we'd start at Paddington Basin and walk the regents canal to Limehouse basin, then get buses back home. Or head out of London and do a long walk. It really helped so much. When I'd lost enough weight, where I felt I could go swimming and not be stared at, or as I said, have Greenpeace show up and try and repatriate me to the Thames, I did. But I was already getting loose skin. but now you can buy swimming shorts and it's acceptable for women to wear those. So at around a size 20 I went swimming again. One hour of just swimming boring lengths burns the most calories, it's not boring to me as I love swimming but again very worth it. We've moved back to Northern Ireland, where I'm from and live near a very safe beach. I have a scuba semi-dry suit which allows me to swim all year round. Even in summer the water doesn't get above 15 degrees, the rest of the year, it's having the car running with heating on full blast for when you come out, as that is the danger. Cold water also burns more calories.
As when it comes down to it, calorie counting works. Energy in versus energy out.
ALSO, congratulation on losing 7lbs. I don't care if you think that isn't enough in the time. It's a loss, and to honest, the more slowly you lose the weight, the more chance you have of keeping it off. I lost a lot initially but then it did slow right down. Also things like PCOS and many other conditions that we ladies get, can hugely affect the rate at which we lose weight. So please do not give up. I have PCOS. And I found reducing my carbs to 40% of my daily intake helped my symptoms and weight loss massively. But finding out this information back then was really difficult.
I don't know if it's easier to find these things out now. I recently went through two operations in one day, Had to get all my teeth removed(long story) and they found out I was pregnant just before the operation and it was ectopic. So I also have had the fun of having most of my reproductive system removed. I've got one third of my uterus left. I thought I was too old to get pregnant but apparently not. So I'm lucky that I've actually been offered HRT, as I know in the UK many women are fighting to try and get it right now. I decided to see what it was like first but being plunged directly into menopause is awful and I'm starting the HRT soon. Menopause also makes it harder to lose weight.
I haven't been able to properly do exercise since beginning of september. And my back is giving me more pain etc... I did go swimming last week again. And will now start building up going for walks again. Not being able to eat solids because of no teeth has led to the opposite situation for me. I went down to 9 stone 4 and the GP has said i need to eat more. Which is leading me to have a big bowl of ice cream every day. I cannot weight until I get my false teeth again and can go back to eating a more normal diet.
I'm damn lucky that I haven't ended up with type two diabetes to be honest, and I think losing weight slowly helped that massively.
So I hope that gives you some hope and that it has given you some information that you might not have known before and apologies if you do know all of those, my intention is most certainly not to patronise or try and teach you to suck eggs.. I think that sharing our experiences can help each other and if you need a supporter I'm totally here for you.

Some GPs are being pressured into prescribing it even before other drugs have not been given chance to work, just because the patient thinks it will be great for weight loss.
