While I’m sure you have good intentions, categorizing and judging my life as tragic or sad, with no real understanding of what my life is like outside of a belief system, is actually the sad part. I do believe in God, but not the judgement day-follow my commandments- one you believe in. So maybe that might not make the cut for you to be happy for me, even if I’m a good person, have good intentions, and live a happy life. Loving people for being people is the type of unconditional love I speak on. Not conditional love and acceptance based on a man-made belief system.

My heartfelt empathy to you Marilyn. There are NUMEROUS cult-like churches. I attended an Evangelical/Charismatic for over 20 years. I n November 2016 to present, I began to really see what the core members and the "olde boy" covering (in the name of their god) by weaponing bible scriptures. The "perfect purity ring oath" all the preteens took before a church dedication. It did not work at all. There was even a 14 year girl who got pregnant by a 17 year old youth group church leader's kids.

I was raised Southern Baptist and back in the 70s we had a preacher said that if someone told you what they believed and it wasn't what you believed you should say , "LIAR, LIAR". I taught 12 year old girls in Sunday School and they asked if I would do that. I said, "no, because if someone is telling you what they believe is true, they are not liars. They could be wrong or misinformed, but not liars. To lie you must know the truth, believed and say something else to deceive."

I love Shelise! I’ve never seen or heard of her before until this interview but she had me captivated. Shelise was able to tell her story of being put through terrible guilt, shame, fear and despair, with humour and honesty. She didn’t mince her words and her message was received loud and clear. I did see your eyebrows raise twice Andrew when Shelise was recounting her experience with the bishops punishment for the oral sex incident, and she said her mind was blown 😂

my 83 yr old mother is mormon and her Calling in the ward JANITOR. yes folks, true story!! my 83 yr old life-long faithful mormon mother cleans bathrooms, vacuums, and takes the trash out every week all by herself. my dad helps her as much as he can but hes old too and has his own calling thats always demanding on time.ugh makes me soooo mad...i feel its a slap in the face to a woman who devotes her life and 10% of her income to this ridiculous church. they are certaining wealthy enough to hire a janitor, or give the calling to someone younger. booooooo the mormon institution.

I see myself in this episode SO much and I was raised a Southern Baptist. Sexuality is something heavily shamed in this religion and it has definitely been a huge hurdle for me in my adult life. I am also on my path to finding what I believe and how to experience it the best I can. Thank-you Andrew for such a great episode!
I'm not Mormon but I dont enjoy alcohol. It makes me feel unwell. I can have just as much without it than with it. I am also very smiley ... its contageous looking friendly. I see it whereever I go. Everyone wants to greet me and make small talk and the first thing I hear is. I LOVE YOUR SMILE.
The creators of South Park lived in Colorado, in a high Mormon area, so they know a lot about Mormonism, but they are not Mormon themselves. Also, Song of Solomon has tons of sex stuff in it. Tons.
Although not raised a Mormon, I experienced conditional friendship and community as well. To me, the church community seemed more concerned with where my soul was headed, and not what I was suffering through in the here and now.
Tell your Atheist friend that you believe in Jesus and you don't believe in aborting or transitioning children, and see if their love for you is unconditional or conditional?
All these anomalies conditional this and that. My caring for others has no contract. It must be hurtful to be manipulated into these conditional activities. I stick to the do no harm mantra, I was gifted as a child.
I love that Morticia highlights that it's from Cults to Conciousness. Not just Mormon belief systems. That she wants recovery and to heal vs. hating her specific cult. Some of what she said is true but not everything. I am a convert. I joined when I was 12 and my York sister was 15. I lived in New York for a year and a half when I was 7. Then we moved to Los Angeles/ San Fernando Valley. That is the area we were introduced to the church after visiting many other churches and finally talking with a Rabbi about how we grew up in South America being Catholic. Yet I knew my father was Jewish but didn’t realize that my mother’s family was as well. Yet knowing about the LDS Church was what felt familiar and at home for me. We go to church two hours on Sunday and yes we look in on each other and befriend others as part of our “church family “ does. I love and are friends with the ladies who visit me and I visit my ladies. They are now called ministering teachers and our families are visited by two men or a couple once per month to see if the family is doing well, health wise, if the father lost his job, the mother or kids are I’ll? If you’re in need of food, bills that need to be paid and you are having a difficult time, the Relief Society President is notified and she notifies the Bishop. He then gives the family a paper that has a list of foods, including plastic wrap, soap, all sorts of things the “Bishop’s Store House has and from there they either go shopping there or your order is filled and delivered. In the meantime the father can go to the Church Unemployment Office and volunteers there will help you find a job, help you with your résumé’s and if bills need to be paid the Bishop will pay that for you. You are expected to help at the Bishop Store House if you can, or other things you can contribute to with your time. Our Fast offering we give every first Sunday of the month goes towards the needs of the members when they need it. You can say no to a calling if you’re not able to do it. I’m grateful for the opportunity of preparing a talk and presenting it in Sacrament Meeting in front of the congregation on Sunday. It helped me no to be afraid of public speaking. We are taught to have savings of 6 months incase of an emergency, as well as a year supply of food for the same reason. I know I have been able to help a young family that went through their food supply and savings with food from my year supply. The programs that are available for the different age groups are invaluable and I see now more and more young people don’t know how to cook or do the basics of home prep. When my children were in Jr High they had to take a day out of the week and get a cookbook from my beautiful collection and we would not complain and eat what they cooked. I taught each of them how to do laundry. I would ask each of them to bring a cd of their favorite music and we would play it randomly between the four kids and myself. I always chose The Gipsy Kings. Then we all helped clean the house. It was a 4,000 sq ft house. Now, they all are great Chefs at home, they handle money well and live well within their means, have clean houses and do laundry well. My oldest son taught his wife to cook and many other things at home. They are all College educated and two middle boys have left the church but my oldest son and my youngest, only daughter, is still active. Thanks for reading my two cents.
I’m listening to her talk about sex, this reminds me of my teenage yrs in the evangelical church. I was saving myself for marriage. Plus we were in church twice on Sundays, prayer meetings on Tuesdays, Bible study on Wednesday, young ppl on Friday’s. You were never in the presence of secular ppl. That’s a cult!
I'm so into this chick. I'm ex-Mormon, too and know ALOT about the Rules and Word of Wisdom stuff and she tells The Whole Story of the traditions. About the coffee thing (hot drinks), I would have said all that almost word for word!! Funny - I took up smoking and coffee when I left The Church. I'd always liked coffee, so I indulged. The cigs - It was rebellion at first but I like it, so... I don't much but it feels good. And we have the 'still don't drink alcohol's thing in common.!! Funny...😅 Good guest, Andrew. I don't do much alcohol. My Protestant, Christian family of origin drinks rarely. No reason was given. They just didn't. Then I went to a religious university. They taught it was bad & we could be expelled if caught drinking it. I do not have any religious objection to alcohol being used responsibly. But since my college years were spent not drinking, I feel like I missed out on that time of development when everyone learns about alcohol. Now I am 46, and I still rarely drink. I think alcohol tastes bad & is expensive. I'm not holy, I just prefer a Dr. Pepper. 😂 So I get Shelise not liking coffee. I became dependent and a fanatic about coffee in school after pulling late-night study sessions.
You missed out on wasted time, wasted money, wasted brain cells, overworking your liver, and possible addiction to a drug that truly destroys. I'd say what you really did is DODGE A BULLET. BE THANKFUL !!!! Americans act like getting inebriated is a right of passage, which does not say much for our society.
@@jasonk795 Yeah, I don't feel sad about it. I had a friend from this denomination where alcohol was not allowed. Her soon-to-be in-laws wouldn't come to her wedding shower because there would not be booze. I find that very sad. They could not enjoy themselves without drinking. At her wedding, there was a dry and alcoholic side of the building with the dance floor in the middle. Our side had a blast. We danced for hours with absolutely no shame. There were jokes, "The crazy part is that y'all are completely sober."

I left the church a decade ago, but I still know many good Mormons. I have known more good Mormons than bad. I will never believe their doctrine however.
I grew up basically an atheist in a Utah town that was 80% Mormon. It is always interesting to see people’s reactions to how weird Mormonism can be. I used to think Mormons said prayers before meals because they were afraid it was poisoned.
One thing I feel I MUST point out is this woman is from Utah. I've read lots of comments from exmormons from Utah and their experience is completely different from LDS in other parts of the country. In this town is a very good dental school and we get people from all over. We have two ways of describing Mormons from somewhere else. We ask are they Utah Mormons or California Mormons. By assigning them to one of the two categories we know what we're going to be dealing with. California Mormons are more laid back. Personally, I've only met one couple from Utah I liked and could be friends with. A lot of the things she is saying are "Utah Mormon" things. They have always seemed to me to be much more hard line and judgy. Just my .02
I agree. In Australia I had a close friend who was Mormon. I’m Christian and we respected our similarities and differences and got on with life. When she passed I met many of her church friends and they were all lovely and very friendly.
Hi! I can see that. Having lived in 3 states as a Mormon, I will say that the Utah Mormons where I lived were actually way more relaxed than the Oregon or Las Vegas Mormons. The bishop story from the young single adults ward was in vegas. However, if you are speaking about Provo Mormons (in Utah), then 100 percent they are the most strict.
I know what you mean. It really seems to depend on how immersed they can be in it. In Utah or southern Alberta, there are enough Mormons it can get pretty culty. If you live in a place where it’s just another church, there doesn’t seem to be the opportunity to become so immersed in it; you just are exposed to a lot more diversity.
@@CultstoConsciousness I don't really know where all of them coming and going from the dental school were from. I've been in the LDS church since I was 18 and I'm 61 now. I'm probably considered inactive now although I don't think of myself that way. I have a lot of health problems and just don't go anywhere much. I've been in the Young Women's presidency. Never heard anyone make the chewing gum comment. Don't really even remember a chastity lesson. Probably was one but not anything like you described. Been in RS presidency. Never heard anyone ever talking about being a good wife. The closest thing to that I can think of is emergency preparedness. I have two sons. They did not have yearly interviews. They were only interviewed prior to temple trips. Women wear pants here sometimes. Nobody cares. I have two ear piercings and have had since I was 18. I plan to reward myself and get a third if I lose weight. Are there churchzillias here? Sure. There are two ladies here I wouldn't cross the street to pee on if I saw them on fire. Do I not agree with some things? Sure. It's pretty common to question if a calling is inspiration or desperation. And I whole heartedly agree that anyone in a bishopric ought to have training. I think a abundance of people on this side of the Mississippi came from other churches or no church. Consequently we're not trying to play "who's the best Mormon." A Utah Mormon said something to my husband one time about his ancestors being the ones who crossed the plains. Know what hubby said? "Yeah and my ancestors were probably the ones shooting at them. What's your point?" Church, any church, is for sinners who feel in need of God's grace. Not for self righteous twats. Which, no offense, the majority of Utah Mormons I've met are. I'm sure there are plenty that aren't but they don't seem to venture out much.
Oh and when we hear them coming down on something in general conference, we're like what's going on out there that made them say that? Seriously, it's almost like two different churches that use the same scriptures.

About the guys who used you: there is something I learned the hard way about people who've used a lot of psychedelics - they lose their morals and empathy, believing they know everything about the world and that its all there for their taking at everyone else's expense. Perhaps its a certain drug or mix, but I've seen that in all the people who bragged about how great drugs are for 'healing' and 'opening your mind'.

I am an Ex- Mormon. Most of my family, including my mom and her husband, are. My dear sister is...with endless callings. My mother, to my knowledge, has provided my email, and address to the church. I left for so many reasons,...the church is the one and only true church. Seeing Priesthood holders not supporting victims of crimes. Also, members that ether has done tithe...drink...or have affairs. It was easy to walk away after I saw the hypocrisy. Jesus came to fulfill the Old Testament. In the New Testament Jesus taught only unconditional Love. So we can toss the whole Bible out and not be a dick and really love each other. I love this woman, she speaks to everything I grew up with. I so wish I could share any of this with my family. I would love them to hear the truth about Joseph Smith, Brigham Young, Ploigamy, the modesty issue, the colling issue, being Morally clean, the word of wisdom, Pearl of Great Price, Joseph Smith doing divination, and marrying 14-year-old girls. So many crazy truths that are not talked about in the truth. Maybe someone being gang-raped spoke to a Priesthood member and Nothing was done. I too have sought help through Ahyauwska, Kambo, and Psylisiban. Still seeking and I am so thrilled to have the opportunity to hear you.
I was raised JW & one of the many things that a non~no in that religion is tattoos. To this day I do not have a tattoo & don’t want one. I wonder is it just my preference or was it the way I was raised.🤔

Fellow Utahn here (never Mormon) its funny that they don't "drink addictive substances" and yet almost every Mormon I know is highly addicted to soda. We have soda shops all over.
Commenting before finishing- crochet sounds cool but I'm into that. The LDS kids in my high school used to meet before school started daily. Teens already have sleep trouble and school starts early- plus no coffee? That must have been hard for them.
I enjoyed your discussions. I was brought up Fundamentalist Christian and I remember that one poor woman had to confess openly to the whole congregation her sin (of dating a man who was not a Christian) so she could again partake of the sacrament. I was a teenager at the time and was horrified for her. I eventually left the Mennonite Brethren and have never looked back.
They talk such bs, in the Catholic faith we confess to God through the priest who is bound by the confessional law, in other words no repeating what has been said. Any sinner can enter the church, or when you want to speak to God. Another treasure we have is anyone of us, in an emergency ie: when someone is dying and haven't been baptised, we can perform this sacrament, if no priest can be found in time. We also pray for the dead.

Great interview! I didn't drink coffee until I was in my late 40's. I never liked it until my friend made me coffee with fresh ground beans and yummy creamer. I also don't drink alcohol often. I like a pina coloda or margarita with dinner, or a Kahlua and cream in the evening.
So glad I'm watching this in the morning because every time I hear tea being discussed, I have a massive urge to drink tea. Guess what I'm drinking now!
I was married the first time in 1991 (in the Mormon temple) & I was told on multiple occasions that oral was really sinful. I heard it frequently when I was an active “true believing Mormon” (TBM).
I remember the 3-hour long sessions on Sunday back in the day. Fortunately we were what they called Jack Mormons (because my mom drank coffee and smoked cigarettes), and she didn't make us do all the stuff during the week. So glad! We moved across the country when I was 13 and she didn't make me go back to church, so I didn't and haven't since. I'm now 47 and they still knock on my door at least once a month. I have been very clear with them, even one of the elders who kept coming by for a while, but they still keep stopping by. At least the Jehovah witnesses went away when I asked them to. They kept getting my address because of my mom.
When the missionaries show up again and they ask me if I need anything done, instead of saying no, I'm going to have them build my new chicken coop 😆 they owe me after 25 years of stalking.
😂😂 yes put them to work! I got my records removed. Thankfully though before that they lost track of me because I moved annually in LA lol. When I found out they benefit by having my name in their records with taxes or something I went to quit Mormon and started the process.
In that Christian Church I just referred to it was also mostly a female Preacher who literally gave me the shirt off her back because I was freezing and homeless in a t-shirt and she had a nice comfy and warm hood on. I didn't even ask she was just that empathetic and the other Preacher was a Man who had been homeless just 15 years before living on the same streets with his wife and they'd also bring us chik filet breakfast sandwiches a couple times a week and his wife did free haircuts once a month and weekly brought Men's and Women's mini sized cleaning products for free out of there pockets and time for us. They gave back to the community and situation they were once in, if I wasn't so disabled I'd do the same. I used to take in women in need and homeless people down on there luck who just needed a helping hand back when I was capable of working but they made me want to do more, unfortunately that's not in the cards for me .
I'm not a Mormon, but I don't like coffee.(Love tea!) I don't drink alcohol. Communion in my church is grape juice and unleavened bread. Until now, I didn't realize I had things in common with Mormons!
Also, most Mormons are completely blind to the actual history of the church. So, be patient when you meet a Mormon. Especially these poor kids they’ve forced out on a mission. I was born into the church and didn’t find this out until I was 43 years old. And even now, I am not free to speak openly living in Utah. So thank you to all the podcasters who are bringing a light to this.
Thank you for saying this. I feel like I have this comment on repeat for the TBMs who challenge me for not getting the facts right. So much is hidden from the members and outright changed to keep people from the truth.
I always thought Mormonism was a cult decades ago, then it was accepted as a religion. Which I found fascinating. Especially when the Osmonds were mormons and they were famous and on TV.
Just putting this out there... I kinda wish I had classes growing up teaching me to cook, crochet & blab blah blah. All I ever did was sleep, skip class, sell drugs to my peers and drink because I finished my work in about 10 minutes, was never stimulated or challenged nearly enough & it's too easy for an overwhelmed public school system to give up on kids that need something more.
Wasting your time was just your choice. I wonder if at that you would have been interestedin crochet and cooking. When you were not intetested in maths, science, history, literature to build your education. .
I completed all of my school work & also tested very well. Was incredibly interested in academics, so much so that I flew through school work at an accelerated rate and after I was done with the days curriculum, there was nothing more to offer me while my peers were still working. I grew bored. If you had read my original comment, you would have gathered that. My conclusion was that public school would benefit more children with more to offer & the insight to realize not every kid learns at the same pace would help more kids. ❤️
I don’t drink coffee. I tried it once when I was 12 we were at the donut shop. My mom got up to use the restroom. I thought I was grown I took a sip I said never again and I’ve never drink it again.
My mom joined the Mormon church and brought me into it for a certain time period in my life and I have to laugh about this interview. I remember them having these long drawn out discussions with the teenage youth and adults in the 80's going into great detail about different sexual things that were banned and it horrified me. All of this reminds me of the family guy episode where Meg was having ear sex to stay a virgin. Makes me laugh!😂😂
The one that gets me is being the outcast in the family and maybe getting looked down upon and not going to their level of heaven when you die.😮 really??? The cult is soooo evident right there. I have been gone for a long time and it’s still in the back of my head. The abuse and treatment haunts you for life from what CULTS do to you.
I am part of a religion and my family must be the cult bc the way they treat me is shocking. My parents refused to come to my wedding, my dad removed me as executor of the will bc I was now stupid bc I believed in a Creator. Cults can also be family organisations and their strong beliefs. BTW they are all atheists... my father was the cult leader & what he decided were the laws of god.

My 4th great grandfather was Edward Partridge, 1st Mormon Bishop. His mission was 7 yrs in England 🇬🇧 He was set apart by Joseph Smith I believe.... and died in jail with The "prophet". He probably baptized your Grandmother 😆
We are an L D S family and have never heard of most of the things this a lady is talking about. Maybe being in a part of the country away from Utah makes our experience different. Why don’t you talk to someone who is an active Morman?

Things they have since come out with on their own website after lying to their members for years. While I admit many of my experiences may be different from other Latter Day Saints, I can assure you they aren’t singular to me. Culture in different parts of utah, different states and even different countries will certainly play a role in each member’s experiences. I’ve lived in 3 states as a member, so I can attest to them being very different. However, the shame and perpetuated guilt were the same. I truly hope you don’t feel personally attacked by my perspectives and recounting of the church. I’ve been in your shoes and I wish you the best!
Not all mormons are told that holy ghost to bed at midnight I think that was a scare tactic on whoever's behalf that said it. However I was told to be home by midnight because any good git's home by that time. And nothing good happens after midnight
I'm not an ex-Mormon I am an atheist, but my sister is a Mormon. I am watching these podcasts to understand this organization and its control over its members. The ironic thing is my ancestors were part of the group that chased the Mormons out of Missouri! Baptizing the dead is totally weird. I found some of my ancestors, who were pastors, ministers and leaders in their Christian religion and who would have been disgusted by Mormonism have been baptized Mormon after they were dead!
So good to hear you talk about the conditional love aspect. I'm a never-Mo living in Salt Lake City. Talk about a bubble. The shunning is a horrible trauma. We also have a very high suicide rate, I think in part, due to the demands and perfectionism, especially traumatic for the gay community. I've long wondered if the bishop's questions constituted voyeurism. There's so much that's so sick about these eligions.
I am not a Mormon, but I have lived in Salt Lake City for over 20 years, I have family and friends that are Mormon, and to be perfectly honest a lot of the things portrayed in this podcast are just not true, be critical thinkers, Don’t believe everything you hear. Since leaving Mormon I have developed a strong, personal relationship with my Heavenly Father that I never felt in the Church. The Bible tells me all I need to know. I feel God is with me, loves me , and watches over me. I think all the rules, the way women are treated as 2nd class people, the men ruling over the women........all that smothered that personal sense I feel with God now.

My heartfelt empathy to you Marilyn. There are NUMEROUS cult-like churches. I attended an Evangelical/Charismatic for over 20 years. I n November 2016 to present, I began to really see what the core members and the "olde boy" covering (in the name of their god) by weaponing bible scriptures. The "perfect purity ring oath" all the preteens took before a church dedication. It did not work at all. There was even a 14 year girl who got pregnant by a 17 year old youth group church leader's kids.

I was raised Southern Baptist and back in the 70s we had a preacher said that if someone told you what they believed and it wasn't what you believed you should say , "LIAR, LIAR". I taught 12 year old girls in Sunday School and they asked if I would do that. I said, "no, because if someone is telling you what they believe is true, they are not liars. They could be wrong or misinformed, but not liars. To lie you must know the truth, believed and say something else to deceive."

my 83 yr old mother is mormon and her Calling in the ward JANITOR. yes folks, true story!! my 83 yr old life-long faithful mormon mother cleans bathrooms, vacuums, and takes the trash out every week all by herself. my dad helps her as much as he can but hes old too and has his own calling thats always demanding on time.ugh makes me soooo mad...i feel its a slap in the face to a woman who devotes her life and 10% of her income to this ridiculous church. they are certaining wealthy enough to hire a janitor, or give the calling to someone younger. booooooo the mormon institution.

I see myself in this episode SO much and I was raised a Southern Baptist. Sexuality is something heavily shamed in this religion and it has definitely been a huge hurdle for me in my adult life. Some of what she said is true but not everything. I am a convert. I joined when I was 12 and my York sister was 15. I lived in New York for a year and a half when I was 7. Then we moved to Los Angeles/ San Fernando Valley. That is the area we were introduced to the church after visiting many other churches and finally talking with a Rabbi about how we grew up in South America being Catholic. Yet I knew my father was Jewish but didn’t realize that my mother’s family was as well. Yet knowing about the LDS Church was what felt familiar and at home for me.
We go to church two hours on Sunday and yes we look in on each other and befriend others as part of our “church family “ does. I love and are friends with the ladies who visit me and I visit my ladies. They are now called ministering teachers and our families are visited by two men or a couple once per month to see if the family is doing well, health wise, if the father lost his job, the mother or kids are I’ll? If you’re in need of food, bills that need to be paid and you are having a difficult time, the Relief Society President is notified and she notifies the Bishop. He then gives the family a paper that has a list of foods, including plastic wrap, soap, all sorts of things the “Bishop’s Store House has and from there they either go shopping there or your order is filled and delivered. In the meantime the father can go to the Church Unemployment Office and volunteers there will help you find a job, help you with your résumé’s and if bills need to be paid the Bishop will pay that for you. You are expected to help at the Bishop Store House if you can, or other things you can contribute to with your time.
Our Fast offering we give every first Sunday of the month goes towards the needs of the members when they need it.
You can say no to a calling if you’re not able to do it. I’m grateful for the opportunity of preparing a talk and presenting it in Sacrament Meeting in front of the congregation on Sunday. It helped me no to be afraid of public speaking.
We are taught to have savings of 6 months incase of an emergency, as well as a year supply of food for the same reason. I know I have been able to help a young family that went through their food supply and savings with food from my year supply.
The programs that are available for the different age groups are invaluable and I see now more and more young people don’t know how to cook or do the basics of home prep.
When my children were in Jr High they had to take a day out of the week and get a cookbook from my beautiful collection and we would not complain and eat what they cooked. I taught each of them how to do laundry. I would ask each of them to bring a cd of their favorite music and we would play it randomly between the four kids and myself. I always chose The Gipsy Kings. Then we all helped clean the house. It was a 4,000 sq ft house. Now, they all are great Chefs at home, they handle money well and live well within their means, have clean houses and do laundry well. My oldest son taught his wife to cook and many other things at home. They are all College educated and two middle boys have left the church but my oldest son and my youngest, only daughter, is still active.

The Holy Ghost going to bed at midnight is a thing, my very Mormon parents said it to me but it’s more of an excuse it’t kind of said tongue-in-cheek.
I don't do much alcohol. My Protestant, Christian family of origin drinks rarely. No reason was given. They just didn't. Then I went to a religious university. They taught it was bad & we could be expelled if caught drinking it. I do not have any religious objection to alcohol being used responsibly. But since my college years were spent not drinking, I feel like I missed out on that time of development when everyone learns about alcohol. Now I am 46, and I still rarely drink. I think alcohol tastes bad & is expensive. I'm not holy, I just prefer a Dr. Pepper. 😂 So I get Shelise not liking coffee. I became dependent and a fanatic about coffee in school after pulling late-night study sessions.

@@jasonk795 Yeah, I don't feel sad about it. I had a friend from this denomination where alcohol was not allowed. Her soon-to-be in-laws wouldn't come to her wedding shower because there would not be booze. I find that very sad. They could not enjoy themselves without drinking. At her wedding, there was a dry and alcoholic side of the building with the dance floor in the middle. Our side had a blast. We danced for hours with absolutely no shame. There were jokes, "The crazy part is that y'all are completely sober."

I left the church a decade ago, but I still know many good Mormons. I have known more good Mormons than bad. I will never believe their doctrine however.
I grew up basically an atheist in a Utah town that was 80% Mormon. It is always interesting to see people’s reactions to how weird Mormonism can be.

One thing I feel I MUST point out is this woman is from Utah. I've read lots of comments from exmormons from Utah and their experience is completely different from LDS in other parts of the country. In this town is a very good dental school and we get people from all over. We have two ways of describing Mormons from somewhere else. We ask are they Utah Mormons or California Mormons. By assigning them to one of the two categories we know what we're going to be dealing with. California Mormons are more laid back. Personally, I've only met one couple from Utah I liked and could be friends with.
A lot of the things she is saying are "Utah Mormon" things. They have always seemed to me to be much more hard line and judgy.

I agree. In Australia I had a close friend who was Mormon. I’m Christian and we respected our similarities and differences and got on with life. When she passed I met many of her church friends and they were all lovely and very friendly.
Hi! I can see that. Having lived in 3 states as a Mormon, I will say that the Utah Mormons where I lived were actually way more relaxed than the Oregon or Las Vegas Mormons. The bishop story from the young single adults ward was in vegas. However, if you are speaking about Provo Mormons (in Utah), then 100 percent they are the most strict.
I know what you mean. It really seems to depend on how immersed they can be in it. In Utah or southern Alberta, there are enough Mormons it can get pretty culty. If you live in a place where it’s just another church, there doesn’t seem to be the opportunity to become so immersed in it; you just are exposed to a lot more diversity.

I've been in the LDS church since I was 18 and I'm 61 now. I'm probably considered inactive now although I don't think of myself that way. I have a lot of health problems and just don't go anywhere much.
I've been in the Young Women's presidency. Never heard anyone make the chewing gum comment. Don't really even remember a chastity lesson. Probably was one but not anything like you described.
Been in RS presidency. Never heard anyone ever talking about being a good wife. The closest thing to that I can think of is emergency preparedness.
I have two sons. They did not have yearly interviews. They were only interviewed prior to temple trips.
Women wear pants here sometimes. Nobody cares. I have two ear piercings and have had since I was 18. I plan to reward myself and get a third if I lose weight.
Are there churchzillias here? Sure. There are two ladies here I wouldn't cross the street to pee on if I saw them on fire.
Do I not agree with some things? Sure. It's pretty common to question if a calling is inspiration or desperation. And I whole heartedly agree that anyone in a bishopric ought to have training.
I think a abundance of people on this side of the Mississippi came from other churches or no church. Consequently we're not trying to play "who's the best Mormon."
A Utah Mormon said something to my husband one time about his ancestors being the ones who crossed the plains.

Church, any church, is for sinners who feel in need of God's grace. Not for self righteous twats. Which, no offense, the majority of Utah Mormons I've met are. I'm sure there are plenty that aren't but they don't seem to venture out much.
Oh and when we hear them coming down on something in general conference, we're like what's going on out there that made them say that?

About the guys who used you: there is something I learned the hard way about people who've used a lot of psychedelics - they lose their morals and empathy, believing they know everything about the world and that its all there for their taking at everyone else's expense. Perhaps its a certain drug or mix, but I've seen that in all the people who bragged about how great drugs are for 'healing' and 'opening your mind'.
I was wearing a long dress, to my ankles, my sleeves were long, and I was running errands. I got accused of being a prostitute in my old neighborhood.

I am an Ex- Mormon. Most of my family, including my mom and her husband, are. My dear sister is...with endless callings. My mother, to my knowledge, has provided my email, and address to the church. I left for so many reasons,...the church is the one and only true church. Seeing Priesthood holders not supporting victims of crimes. Also, members that ether has done tithe...drink...or have affairs. It was easy to walk away after I saw the hypocrisy. Jesus came to fulfill the Old Testament. In the New Testament Jesus taught only unconditional Love. So we can toss the whole Bible out and not be a dick and really love each other. I love this woman, she speaks to everything I grew up with. I so wish I could share any of this with my family. I would love them to hear the truth about Joseph Smith, Brigham Young, Ploigamy, the modesty issue, the colling issue, being Morally clean, the word of wisdom, Pearl of Great Price, Joseph Smith doing divination, and marrying 14-year-old girls. So many crazy truths that are not talked about in the truth. Maybe someone being gang-raped spoke to a Priesthood member and Nothing was done. I too have sought help through Ahyauwska, Kambo, and Psylisiban. Still seeking and I am so thrilled to have the opportunity to hear you.

I was raised JW & one of the many things that a non~no in that religion is tattoos. To this day I do not have a tattoo & don’t want one. I wonder is it just my preference or was it the way I was raised.🤔

10:51 i totally agree! The worst ill do on thc is eat too much and sleep, or clean. Alcohol will have me removing my shoes, sweating off my makeup, talking to ppl i shoukdnt, or running off to find sasquatch at 3am on a freaking island only to wake up in a random treehouse in the middle of nowhere wearing mens(i think) footed pjs!! Soooo yeahhhh.. ill stick to my thc thank you. Plus with it i can not take 8 of my 14 daily meds.

Fellow Utahn here (never Mormon) its funny that they don't "drink addictive substances" and yet almost every Mormon I know is highly addicted to soda. We have soda shops all over.
Commenting before finishing- crochet sounds cool but I'm into that. The LDS kids in my high school used to meet before school started daily. Teens already have sleep trouble and school starts early- plus no coffee? That must have been hard for them.
I enjoyed your discussions. I was brought up Fundamentalist Christian and I remember that one poor woman had to confess openly to the whole congregation her sin (of dating a man who was not a Christian) so she could again partake of the sacrament. I was a teenager at the time and was horrified for her. I eventually left the Mennonite Brethren and have never looked back.
They talk such bs, in the Catholic faith we confess to God through the priest who is bound by the confessional law, in other words no repeating what has been said. Any sinner can enter the church, or when you want to speak to God. Another treasure we have is anyone of us, in an emergency ie: when someone is dying and haven't been baptised, we can perform this sacrament, if no priest can be found in time. We also pray for the dead.

There's no need to confess your sins to a " priest" , the Roman Catholic priesthood is not biblical is pagan and useless.

Great interview! I didn't drink coffee until I was in my late 40's. I never liked it until my friend made me coffee with fresh ground beans and yummy creamer. I also don't drink alcohol often. I like a pina coloda or margarita with dinner, or a Kahlua and cream in the evening.
So glad I'm watching this in the morning because every time I hear tea being discussed, I have a massive urge to drink tea. Guess what I'm drinking now!

I was married the first time in 1991 (in the Mormon temple) & I was told on multiple occasions that oral was really sinful. I heard it frequently when I was an active “true believing Mormon” (TBM).
I remember the 3-hour long sessions on Sunday back in the day. Fortunately we were what they called Jack Mormons (because my mom drank coffee and smoked cigarettes), and she didn't make us do all the stuff during the week. So glad! We moved across the country when I was 13 and she didn't make me go back to church, so I didn't and haven't since. I'm now 47 and they still knock on my door at least once a month. I have been very clear with them, even one of the elders who kept coming by for a while, but they still keep stopping by. At least the Jehovah witnesses went away when I asked them to. They kept getting my address because of my mom.
When the missionaries show up again and they ask me if I need anything done, instead of saying no, I'm going to have them build my new chicken coop 😆 they owe me after 25 years of stalking.
Stalking! What was the thought? These young missionaries out now can't be blamed for anything.
😂😂 yes put them to work! I got my records removed. Thankfully though before that they lost track of me because I moved annually in LA lol. When I found out they benefit by having my name in their records with taxes or something I went to quit Mormon and started the process.
In that Christian Church I just referred to it was also mostly a female Preacher who literally gave me the shirt off her back because I was freezing and homeless in a t-shirt and she had a nice comfy and warm hood on. I didn't even ask she was just that empathetic and the other Preacher was a Man who had been homeless just 15 years before living on the same streets with his wife and they'd also bring us chik filet breakfast sandwiches a couple times a week and his wife did free haircuts once a month and weekly brought Men's and Women's mini sized cleaning products for free out of there pockets and time for us. They gave back to the community and situation they were once in, if I wasn't so disabled I'd do the same. I used to take in women in need and homeless people down on there luck who just needed a helping hand back when I was capable of working but they made me want to do more, unfortunately that's not in the cards for me .
I'm not a Mormon, but I don't like coffee.(Love tea!) I don't drink alcohol. Communion in my church is grape juice and unleavened bread. Until now, I didn't realize I had things in common with Mormons!
Also, most Mormons are completely blind to the actual history of the church. So, be patient when you meet a Mormon. Especially these poor kids they’ve forced out on a mission. I was born into the church and didn’t find this out until I was 43 years old. And even now, I am not free to speak openly living in Utah. So thank you to all the podcasters who are bringing a light to this.
Thank you for saying this. I feel like I have this comment on repeat for the TBMs who challenge me for not getting the facts right. So much is hidden from the members and outright changed to keep people from the truth.

Just putting this out there... I kinda wish I had classes growing up teaching me to cook, crochet & blab blah blah. All I ever did was sleep, skip class, sell drugs to my peers and drink because I finished my work in about 10 minutes, was never stimulated or challenged nearly enough & it's too easy for an overwhelmed public school system to give up on kids that need something more.
Yes, more cooking, tent building, etc. would be great. They used to have those classes awhile back. Home economics they called it, for one.
Wasting your time was just your choice. I wonder if at that you would have been interestedin crochet and cooking. When you were not intetested in maths, science, history, literature to build your education. .
I completed all of my school work & also tested very well. Was incredibly interested in academics, so much so that I flew through school work at an accelerated rate and after I was done with the days curriculum, there was nothing more to offer me while my peers were still working. I grew bored. If you had read my original comment, you would have gathered that. My conclusion was that public school would benefit more children with more to offer & the insight to realize not every kid learns at the same pace would help more kids. ❤️
I don’t drink coffee. I tried it once when I was 12 we were at the donut shop. My mom got up to use the restroom. I thought I was grown I took a sip I said never again and I’ve never drink it again.
My mom joined the Mormon church and brought me into it for a certain time period in my life and I have to laugh about this interview. I remember them having these long drawn out discussions with the teenage youth and adults in the 80's going into great detail about different sexual things that were banned and it horrified me. All of this reminds me of the family guy episode where Meg was having ear sex to stay a virgin. Makes me laugh!😂😂
The one that gets me is being the outcast in the family and maybe getting looked down upon and not going to their level of heaven when you die.😮 really??? The cult is soooo evident right there. I have been gone for a long time and it’s still in the back of my head. The abuse and treatment haunts you for life from what CULTS do to you.
I am part of a religion and my family must be the cult bc the way they treat me is shocking. My parents refused to come to my wedding, my dad removed me as executor of the will bc I was now stupid bc I believed in a Creator. Cults can also be family organisations and their strong beliefs. BTW they are all atheists... my father was the cult leader & what he decided were the laws of god.

Things they have since come out with on their own website after lying to their members for years. While I admit many of my experiences may be different from other Latter Day Saints, I can assure you they aren’t singular to me. Culture in different parts of utah, different states and even different countries will certainly play a role in each member’s experiences. I’ve lived in 3 states as a member, so I can attest to them being very different. However, the shame and perpetuated guilt were the same. I truly hope you don’t feel personally attacked by my perspectives and recounting of the church. I’ve been in your shoes and I wish you the best!
Not all mormons are told that holy ghost to bed at midnight I think that was a scare tactic on whoever's behalf that said it. However I was told to be home by midnight because any good git's home by that time. And nothing good happens after midnight
I'm not an ex-Mormon I am an atheist, but my sister is a Mormon. I am watching these podcasts to understand this organization and its control over its members. The ironic thing is my ancestors were part of the group that chased the Mormons out of Missouri! Baptizing the dead is totally weird. I found some of my ancestors, who were pastors, ministers and leaders in their Christian religion and who would have been disgusted by Mormonism have been baptized Mormon after they were dead!
So good to hear you talk about the conditional love aspect. I'm a never-Mo living in Salt Lake City. Talk about a bubble. The shunning is a horrible trauma. We also have a very high suicide rate, I think in part, due to the demands and perfectionism, especially traumatic for the gay community. I've long wondered if the bishop's questions constituted voyeurism. There's so much that's so sick about these eligions.

Since leaving Mormon I have developed a strong, personal relationship with my Heavenly Father that I never felt in the Church. The Bible tells me all I need to know. I feel God is with me, loves me , and watches over me. I think all the rules, the way women are treated as 2nd class people, the men ruling over the women........all that smothered that personal sense I feel with God now.
