River phoenix died from drug overdose in the viper room, not suicide.
That's commonly referred to accidental suicide i.e. not deliberately trying to die but the drug overdose killed them.
@@courtneymcgregor3417I've never heard it referred to that way. I've only heard accidental overdose.
You are correct and I think they need to correct it in the video because it’s 100% NOT TRUE. 😂and we all know if it’s on the internet is HAS to be true!!!😂
Indeed but he was in a spiral of self destruction for years before the fatal event, so It’s to me pretty close to suicide, although that very night he was given a drink with drugs in it and wouldn’t know the amount of drugs he was ingesting
I did not know River Phoenix personally but we had some mutual friends, and for what it's worth they 100% believed it was an accidental overdose.
Love to see Jon on your channel Andrew 👏👏. Always an interesting conversation & something to learn 💙.
Eww how can these horrible cults be permitted to keep abusing these children!
This information is incredible. Thank you Andrew Gold for all you do.
I was brought up in the JW cult and I counted the days until I was 18 and old enough I to escape. Both my parents died because they refused blood transfusions. How anyone cld join such an evil cult is beyond me.
Condolences for your parents.
So happy you were able to see past the “culture” your were raised in and leave this abusive group!
Peter, lm sorry for the death of yr mother and father:
Pray for them sweetheart....
“Children learn what they live.”
Some young people are independent thinkers; sadly , other young people are “sheep,”……followers. 🥺
Jehovah Witness attendees are NOT Christians. Period.
River was sexually abused from the age of 4. Internally he was emotionally ruined.
While he may not have meant to kill himself, he sadly did.
He had some great friends who tried to help his growing drug addiction. He had been looking really unwell in the week leading up to his death.
The night he collapsed, he didn't look well at the time. The night River died, he had downed a speedball with a valium chaser. He wasn't overdosed by anyone. River was sadly a drug & alcohol addict as a result of what he'd been through. He wasn't overdosed for those people saying so. He downed a speedball with a valium chaser. He was playing with death.
I am so glad you pointed that out to me, I am still getting used to UA-cam. I'm sorry but I thought the message was at me. You were discussing River. I admire your study and life experience.
I understand what you are saying. I don't believe Andrew needs anyone to stick up for him. I stated that River phoenix died accidentally in the viper room and no matter what you have achieved doesn't change the fact that suicide is totally different than an accidental overdose. I would hate to die but have accidentally overdosed in the early days. Now 49 and. Moderation is a way of my life.
There's a lot to suggest he was slipped that speedball, he had no intention of taking it, and hadn't been using heroin in the years before his premature death. There was nothing suicidal about it.
Did he disclose that abuse in writing or an interview? Or is that speculation?
Jon is pure genius in how he puts ideas into great visual context via his analogies! PURE GENIUS!~ This was amazing.
River Phoenix died of an accidental overdose. That doesn't change the fact that the cult led to his death though.
@lauraesposito8225
So he accidentally slipped on a banana peel and fell on a needle and got overdosed?
Overdose is suicide…it’s not homicide .
@@mmestari , accidental only indicates the intent to get high is the goal as opposed to deliberately setting out to consume so much that it causes your death... again deliberately.
@@christinagomez5079 I know what she means by it. But she's grossly misusing the word accidental. It's just overdose, not accidental overdose.
Here's couple of examples of actual accidental overdoses:
A child eats pills thinking they are candy.
Some granny with Alzheimer's disease has forgotten that she has already eaten her medicine, and takes her medicine again and overdoses.
"Brad Pitt has his own winery, so we should listen to him. " Instant like! 😂
Excellent interview. I learned a lot.
A famous Scientologist married to a famous Jehovah's Witness. What could go wrong? 🙄
Who was that!?!
Michael jackson JW
Lisa Maree Presley scientology
@@user_angelmumI don't think Jackson followed the JW nonsense once he grew up.
what you all don't understand is jws lead ordinary quiet happy lives. the only turmoil comes from people who involve themselves in pursuit of whatever goofy enjoyments they think they can find from the outside world. I notice an obvious trend that it's the people who leave who have a tragic outcome.
I was brought up in a cult at the age of 8 or 9. They have a strange way of isolating you from others so you feel an outsider. Compared to Scientology, it wasn't as bad as you could leave, although family members really cut you off as a member of the family. It's all about control and I had to compartmentalise my self (home/school etc) to survive.
😢😢😢 I am very sorry for your hard experience, hope you life is doing well after all! 😊
@@analineellis3396 All good now, thank you.
Chronic Trauma perhaps? Children brought up during their impressionable years may have it. You couldnt imagine the confusion of what you learned. The fear, the isolation, the self righteousness is so confusing. JWs not only beat their kids, but also their wives. Lots of physical abuse in that religion.
Fabulous interview...I learn something new all the time...Mr. J, Atack is so knowledgeable it's a pleasure listen to. Thank you
Fantistic Interview Andrew, you are still Gold! Been around since you were at 10k subscribers, I love how other people have realised your content is quality
Great discussion! That being said--Andrew, DO YOUR HOMEWORK! River Phoenix overdosed at the Viper Room, and there is a lot of evidence that he was unwittingly given the toxic "cocktail" of drugs that killed him.
I agree AG needs to do his homework. As self appointed "journalist" AG tends to give very little push back, and challenges proposed "facts" very rarely. This guy Jon Attack might understand Scientology very well, but has a very poor understanding of other religions & cults or is simply very dishonest.
Agreed. Disease of addiction is greatly misunderstood. For those of us still breathing, we Do Not Have To Die from this. Reach out, stick & stay, DESPERATION DRIVES US TO OUR KNEES BUT FUELS OUR NEW FOUND PASSION 4 LIFE.
Cant wait to see your channel. I am sure it is well researched and free of mistakes.
48:47, Jon, I think when you say “Davros” you mean Davos. Davros was the leader of the Daleks 😂❤️🐾
Haha, thought the same, he might be onto something, mind. Call it a Freudian (Ickean, perhaps?) slip.
Fascinating man, could listen to him for hours
Great episode! It’s a fascinating conversation and perspectives. Thanks for putting it together.
River Phoenix didn't commit suicide he Over dosed!
Same thing
He killed himself slowly with drugs & he finally succeeded. So sad.
Hi Andrew ♥
Great topic, love you and Jon together, you work well together.
Thank you xxx 💝
Hi Andrew, Hi John, I'm an American who strongly supports our 2nd Amendment right to bear arms & I stayed till the end of this broadcast. I love your show & enjoy John. You didn't lose me as a viewer & I appreciate your respectful comment that as Brits you & John may not fully understand the American perspective. Thank you for always being open minded & respectful! Please keep on with your wonderful work!
What an interesting interview! I loved hearing about the ISB. They were wonderful! One day they appeared in the NYOrg while touring. What a memorable pleasure to meet them, I was such a fan. Having celebrities around absolutely reinforced the trance idea that you must be in the right place.
Thank you both. This is such an interesting and instructive discussion. So much history is not out in the general public arena. Great stuff. 🇦🇺 45:36
Have you seen Oblivion?
In it, Tom Cruise all but literally breaks out of, and then comes back to destroy Scientology
Amazing how he could play that role and still not put it together
Great point
River did not take his own life? where did you get that from? He died from a cocktail of drugs!
@mrLukeyp1
That he had taken himself.
@@mmestarithat he had taken himself not realizing it was going to kill him obviously. And someone else supplied him the drugs so he really didn't know what he was taking well enough to know how much he would tolerate. Tragic.
@@therealdeal3672 I'm pretty sure he knew that drugs are lethal. Apparently you don't, you brainless troll.
You could argue that his drug use was brought on by the trauma of watching his parents have sex
Shaken or stirred, with or without an olive?
My favourite guest again so soon! Yay Jon! Sorry Ay Ay Ron I love you too!
Jon is such a wealth of knowledge on many topics and I can’t wait to read his Charles Manson book!
I was also thinking his friend he spoke about whose father was the leader of a Nazi party and beat the poor kid when he was 6 yrs old into unconscious, I think it was Calvin or Kelvin. Jon said he ended up fostering around 200 kids himself and what a wonderful man he was. My thought process was because he came from an evil abusive cult, did he by fostering all these children, build himself a new and loving cult where they would be protected and loved instead of beaten and abused?
It seems like a lot of kids, then I don’t know if there is a back story as there was with Susie and the kids from Uganda she was trying to save.
You still have to get Jon and Mitch together 😂😂
I loved this interview!! Thank you so much Andrew and Jon 👏👏❤️❤️
i have just doubled up laughing out loud to your guest sayimg. Hank Marvin, youve never heard of him. I feel so old. He was front man of The Shadows who were the backing team of cliff richard back in the day. Im at that age where I say things forgetting that Im talking to people who were not even born. But the slightself conscious smile that nearly escaped you made me want to soothe you. You are my go to channel
Excellent talk!!! Love this guy! ❤
What an interesting, educational video. I love your videos!!!
Yay for the return of Jon!! I am always delighted to see him as your guest.
Thank you for the video. Good guest.
That was one of the most interesting (and scary!) interviews I've heard in a very long time. Thanks, Andrew, for introducing me to this fascinating man!
Very interesting indeed, enjoy listening to you very much Thank you.
Jon is hilArious!!! 😂 so smart! I have to stop and think about some of the things he talks about. Pause. Research and come back😊
A friend of mine was targeted by the JW’s and joined. When he left, his former ‘friends’ would cross the road to avoid him. He was left devastated and lonelier than ever. They have very odd ideas about children.
total nonsense. you all want to hear the facts you can talk to me. I love them and they always treat me and everyone in their community with respect and love. you are all talking about something you know nothing of. not to mention look how Michaels life went after he left....
@@last7509 , not clear whether you're a JW but perhaps your experience is one of the few, just as your experience shouldn't be invalidated neither should you invalidate that of others. iE., tom Cruise's experience is UNdoubtedly VERY different from that of other scientologists. Few things in life are black and white & all points should be considered, especially for evolutionary value.
@last7509 they shun people who leave the group, even family members. It's a well-known practice of JWs. They're a cult. Any group that separates families like that is a cult.
Great conversation
You are spot on ! Good video.
I thought River Phoenix died of an accidental overdose
I worked to someone who left the Brethren, his parents, his children's grandparents, returned the cards the children sent to them unopened, they were very young children
Jon is one of my favourite guests as he is so informed. Perfect description shallow & distressed.
Awesome and so very True what you have Said.
Jon is surely such an intelligent man 👏👏👏👏
here unfortunately he is spreading lies
Following several days of binging on cocaine and heroin, 23-year-old actor River Phoenix collapsed outside Hollywood's Viper Room nightclub right in front of his brother, sister, and girlfriend on October 31, 1993.
They are implying that his upbringing created issues leading to self destructive behaviour
Hank ! Everyone knows Hank Marvin😂 and Jet and Bruce and the drummer. Fascinating and interesting interview, thanks😊
Very interesting
It’s very scary 😧 how all those cults get away with their shady ways 😢
John should talk to Mitch about Manson, because Mitch doesn't believe that Manson did Scientology. He thinks it's a conspiracy theory involving CIA and whatever. I believe what John says, also because it makes perfect sense tbh. Anyway, great video as always! Although this one was too short for me, could have listened for hours 🤗
Manson was part of the mk ultra experiments. He read dianetics and in prison there was a Scientologist who audited him and was teaching Scientology tech.
The CIA obviously had something to do with it as well as Jones town. They had about the same amount of LSD which at that time you would have to get that from the government and definitely not from the streets.
Mike Rinder’s book states that he and his wife gave their newborn babies over to the Scientology “nursery” within days of their birth. Their third baby died shortly after of “crib death”.
A major tenant of Christianity, as taught by Jesus, is to love your enemies and to do good to those who despitefuly use you. The goal is to stop the cycle of hate. The Bible also says not to take revenge. To leave justice in the hands of God. This is a very difficult standard indeed. That is not to say that people should be able to avoid the justice of governments.
I'm glad that you touched on political cults. I've been thinking about the political crazies during this whole show. Talk about doomsday cults!
Psalms 118:8 (KJV) [It is] better to trust in the LORD than to put confidence in man.
John explains it so well and he does it in an interesting way.
In Belgium we just think no matter who you vote for, you'll be screwed lol.
I’m kind of missing the holiday background Andrew.
The laws around coercive control needs to be extended into religions and other organisations, not just restricted to close relationships
Question: does it happen regularly that people who were in a sect and got out get back to another sect (pentecostal) later?
Also, Prince was not a "gay icon", he actually thought homosexuality is wrong, 2 of the women in "the Revolution" were a gay couple, though he loved them, he didnt approve of their way of life...
He wasn’t a drug addict either! He was drug dependant due to excruciating hip pain. The word addict always gives the impression that drugs are being used to get ‘high’ when that couldn’t be further from the truth!
The Church of Ladder Day Saints also do not report incest, rape or other sexual crimes to authorities .
not even bigomy...lol'
Wow I went to hit like button and now I can’t back into live feed
Same.
I don't know but I'm thinking this guy is finding cults under every rock. He has made me consider doing some research especially concerning America's use of the Bomb. etc. I'm 76 and this is the first I have heard a lot of this stuff.
Great Kermit The Frog impression at 26:54
Great one , again , honestly, but .. PLEASE, 🥺 pretty please , don’t ever say that Jehovah’s Witnesses are Christians !!!! They are not !😟
Thet believe in Jesus and they follow a bible that comes from the Christian bible right?
@@powderandpaint14 The word “Christian” comes from Jesus Christ and all the Christians are believers in Jesus and only Jesus that comes between us and God , the Father ! These cults just exist like parasites 🦠 of Christianity!
@@powderandpaint14 It is quite different in some areas. They believe Jesus is the son of God but is not part of a Trinity. Another thing they believe is people will live forever on earth after the end times and 144,000 chosen people go to heaven with the angels. They also have a governing body that makes a lot of the decisions and gives the congregation new light for how the bible should be interpreted. So while they do share some beliefs there are others that they interpret differently.
ive just laughed out loud again when you asked what a hair shirt. It was mainly monks as self punishment; not sexual feelings

Lisa-Marie and Michael Jacksons marriage was not "arranged " they disagreed about having children together, but they'd known one another since childhood and did love each other.
MOther Theresa raised billions for her Hospital in Calcutta - but the product looks like something Albert Schweitzer cobbled together in the Congo. She also refused cancer patients pain medicine bc the more pain - the closer they would get to God.
She was a horrible person!!
She also flew on jets and hoarded millions. Sanctioned by the Catholic Church. That's not empathy. That's a cult.
She was awful
They try to keep you from noticing that they're trying to keep you from noticing what they're doing.

The rest of that verse is: go and sin no more. It's the 2nd part of being forgiven
If you have to lie about it then there's something wrong!
As soon as I heard his analysis of Nichiren Shoshu, and that such a powerful woman i .e. Tina Turner could believe something so silly, I had to turn this off. His comment leads me to believe that he did not study this branch of Buddhism, just went by those who left. If someone chants to get a new car, that’s their prerogative, although ultimately you should pray to attain personal and world peace. People leave because they do not like something about the group, that’s fine. No one came chasing after them, held them against their will, or forced them to do anything they did not want to do. Mom called me a non-practicing Buddhist. I did not chant, go to meetings, or take their tests. My parents still loved me. And my beliefs still lie in the teachings of Nichiren.
Thanks for this!
Jesus told us to "love your neighbors as yourself". Yeah, good point about public personas.
A hair shirt was done hundreds of years ago.
Was Prince gay? I never thought he was.
Me neither, nor a gay icon.
Not gay, gay icon, like Kylie
...Boy George says he did him (once). He says he wasn't gay per say however was "open" to sexual experiences
@@anneparsley8739Boy George later admitted he was joking. Prince was 100% straight! I have that on good authority through knowing a lot of people who knew him very well.
Where did you get 2033 from?
There's some very good former JW and Mormon members on UA-cam that are helpful for anybody that's had bad experiences in those settings. Big difference between healthy community and harmful cult, be it religious, political etc, is the use of undue coercive influence. Any place that imposes itself and infringes on a person unwilling is crossing a line. Speaking of Manson, actor Danny Trejo says in his autobiography he was in prison with him and underwent hypnosis by Manson.
jw is no cult. not by any definition of the word
I think many have ideas about what would be considered a cult. I think if a religion is not easy to leave and they are controlling peoples lives and practice things like shunning even with their own family members then I would consider that to be a cult. People should be free to leave a religion without major consequences that disrupt their lives in a devestating way. I know some that can't even go to their own family members wedding because they have been shunned due to religion. It's horrible
@@juliadawn33 totally agree, you hit the nail on the head. Excommunication is a horrible thing to do to people over petty reasons.
Hmmm.. Quincy has been accused of liking males and young ones at that.
John is such a smart guy
Prince wasn't gay
I think he might have been. But kept it secret
Prince wasn’t gay! He was androgynous and in touch with his feminine side but I can assure you he was 100% straight. I know a few people who knew him very well. He loved women 💜

Hey Andrew, thanks so much for verbalizing an American "mentality" regarding gun ownership. Of course not all Americans are supporters of our 2nd Amendment Constitutional right to bear arms, but we have it & I'm thankful for it. But as with all "rights" comes a "responsibility" .We must take gun ownership seriously & carefully. Anyway, thanks for the "understanding".
No 🎂 no Christmas 🌲 sounds darn well deary ..
Fun fact. In a Socal Kindom Hall, Michael Jackson held my little brother when he was a baby. That was a long time ago. My brother is almost 40 and long out of JW's. And I have been out since I was a teenager. Thank gawd. Oh! And my mom claims to have met Charles Manson and visited The Ranch. That's us. Mingling with the stars. 😆
Jehovahs Witnesses do not beat their children in back rooms. What a truly upsetting thing to say. I couldn’t bring myself to listen to any further.
It's a strange thing for him to mention. It's probably just an experience he witnessed once but not anything I'd pick out as being a regular occurrence or even a condoned practice.
I had to look this up because it is the first I had heard of this and there is a discussion thread online of people talking about how they had a spanking room in the Kingdom Hall and there was a paddle hanging on the wall and some said some parents would just use a bathroom stall. It was if their kids started disrupting services apparently. So I don't know what to make of that. I have never been in a Kingdom Hall so I don't know if that is true or not but many are saying it is. Maybe different places experienced different things. Just like not all Kingdom Halls overlooked child abuse that was reported to elders but some definitely did which was evident in the court case in Australia
My idea of empathy, and how I actually live my life is that I can put myself in the shoes of every other living creature, and so, will attempt to alleviate suffering anywhere I encounter it. I cannot bear suffering in any person or creature around me, or even knowing it happens in the abstract. It can, and does, make me quite ill sometimes. But I wouldnt want to become callous even though I know it would make me feel better, its not something I can control, nor do I want it to be. I would agree that its probably a disorder but, I keep myself away from anything triggering in order to keep myself well enough to be able to allieviate suffering in the animals, wild, feral and domesticated that I come into contact with daily. I also limit my exposure to human centred issues that would otherwise upset me and affect how I function there. I am on the autism spectrum and find human relations more stressful than relationships with animals and tend not to engage, but if I knew someone was having a hard time, I would try my best to help them too. Jon is a really interesting guy and he is such a fund of information on cults. I could listen for days!
Video title reads, "The Celebs You DIDN'T Know Were In Cults." Tom Cruise and John Travolta in the thumbnail.
What do you mean when you call Prince a gay icon? He wasn’t gay. So, unless you mean aesthetically/stylistically what you said is false. Misinformation off the bat, and then I saw in this comments section already that you provided misinformation about River Phoenix too.

River died from an overdose.
I would enjoy getting in on this conversation as I have been thinking a lot about what it means to be a part of a cult as well as what defines a cult. I would like to offer my opinion on the final point about Americans having firearms and this being hard to understand for a British perspective. It is a difficult point to research as most hits on a google search show opinions and do not point to when the British police force was established. I did read at one time that in creating a police force that the civilian population of Britain had to respect and follow, compromises were reached to assure a non paramilitary police force. This compromise prevented British police officers from carrying firearms. Obviously there have been incidents where this policy has been more and more reviewed, not the least the Hungerford mass shootings that occurred in Britain showing the need for armed police or certainly easy and quick access to firearms at times when badly needed.
In America our founding documents clearly say that we have the right to bear arms for the purpose of defending against tyranny, even from our own government. From an American's perspective, this may make a little more sense to a British person as our second amendment which allows and even encourages us to bear arms as citizens as needs be, was a way to keep the power of the governance of our country in check. This to me would be very similar to why the British police were not allowed to carry firearms, to prevent the force of the state from becoming too strong. In America our police forces are very much paramilitary and therefore an assault rifle would be a trifle compared to an F16m, an MRAP assault vehicle, or the like. An American citizens right and even duty to bear arms is as important to Americans seems very similar to your British "line drawn in the sand" to keep the police from being armed.
I have never heard anyone beating their children in the back of the Kingdom Hall. Where do you get this crap?
Fascinating! More podcasts like this. Less on the royals. Remember, Harry has suffered emotionally throughout his life. Show him some compassion.
Prince isn't a gay icon drug user....

Incidentally, the difference between a cult and a religion is arbitrary. The difference is that a religion is widely accepted by the majority in society as not being a cult but instead as being a religion. That's it. That's all.
