    what I think sets you apart from so many guitarists is the ability to write truly memorable riffs and solo's. always tasteful whilst being ultra groovy and crushingly heavy. your catalogue still sets the bar for what I want to hear from any heavy band I listen to. you can tell that you've painstakingly thought about the flow of a song and how to take it to the next level with the solo without taking away from what else is going on or being played by the other members. not alot of people can do that. plus they always leave me smiling because you're able to capture that triumphant moment or feel. all time favourite guitarist

    I'm about 65 percent through and you already gave me some ideas to makey my writing sound more lively. Rather than robotic and predictable. Ntm the abrupt changes give the groove/time signatures a really unique flavor. Appreciate it indeed brother.

    For those interested, the "Corpse Harmony" is called the Major 3rd Harmony. It is the 3rd degree of the Major scale. Starting at the root, tonic, tonal center, key (whatever you want to call it) as the first degree of the major scale, 1 whole step (2 frets) would be the Major 2nd or the 2nd degree, then another whole step (2 frets, so 4 total frets away from tonal center) is the Major 3rd interval or 3rd degree of the scale. My music theory knowledge is pretty elementary and always growing so feel free to correct me where I made mistakes.

      He's not playing 4 notes (or major 3rd, intervallically)... he's playing three (minor 3rd). The idea behind the harmony is that it's a 'diminished' sound.
      four notes, would be augmented.

  • @Shadow0fd3ath24
    @Shadow0fd3ath24 3 роки тому +2

    Your writing and way of offloading sound and harmonies on a note/chord thats 4 fret higher is genius dude. I think that, plus a lot of the crazy good chuggy chords in between and the badass drums that enhanced it are what i love about Chimaira so much. especially on the all stuff with Andols (yes even the This Present Darkness EP which id LOVE TO SEE stuff from on here!!)

    Thanks for the inspiration Rob, really got my stuff together to make better quality stuff. Lol, btw, was going to say my favorite Chimaira technique is the inverted 5th. 😂😂😂 that’s the thing you were saying was the flatted 4th and the other guy “perfect 4th”. I’m going to get nerdy for a second, but it’s inverted 5th because the root note is still the higher note, and the lower not is the 5th (power chord), only an octave down. Hence inverted 5th. Doesn’t matter, we know what you mean, and it sounds badass.

    Great video, Rob! It's pretty funny how people have different names for all this stuff, Corpse harmony is a very good name for minor thirds and I guess diminished scales all around, definitely used alot by Cannibal and death metal in general! And when you combine all these different techniques, you can come to with some really cool stuff.

    I used to wonder about the harmonic feedback when you guys came onstage. It never sounded like generic feedback.
    Chimaira was the only band I could think of where it sounded a very certain way.
    I could tell what band it was if I was blindfolded.
    Like the Tilburg show on the The Dehumanising Process dvd, pretty sure it's on that.

  • @jeremyv3010
    @jeremyv3010 3 роки тому

    Rob - A few moments of harmonics that I’ve always loved in Chimaira songs is when you’d use them as “build ups”.
    Example: At about the 1:20 mark in Needle, you hit a harmonic (I believe on the 3rd string) and use your whammy bar to give it this cool “rising” effect. I always thought that was such a sick way to transition into that second verse.

    I’m only really familiar with Louisville Hardcore, which has a lot of sick bands from classics like Endpoint all the way to heavy modern bands like Knocked Loose, Street Ray, Pissed On, Transgression, and many others. However, I’m definitely gonna have to follow to find out who that Cleveland band was because that riff sounded sick!

I had a Prs whale blue Mccarty, Classic black gibson les paul with Zakk Wylde EMGs and an American White strat With Gold Lace sensors. miss them so much I saved up all summer as a young kid to just buy one guitar every summer break in High school. my Friends would be like like go out and have fun, I'd be like no i'm good. saving up for this Guitar, lol!!

    Cool little tidbits. fourths is my fav, sounds punchy yet kind of nasty. Do you use fourths in the intro to pictures in the gold room?

    Hey, Rob, in the Corpse harmony, don't you mean 3 frets higher? (Instead of 4)

    • @RobArnoldWorld
      @RobArnoldWorld  3 роки тому +3

      I guess it depends on how you look at it man. If you count the fret you start on as "one", then the harmony I'm describing is the fourth note when counting is succession. But if you count the second note as "one", then it's three frets away. So I certainly don't disagree with your inquiry, but again, it's how you look at it. You say tomato, I say tomAto🤘

    Really cool lesson there Rob. There was some chords that I would like to know about and they are # chords as in lets say C# and minor chords. I never really played them. I mostly just played power chords of as you said "Fourth" I just knew them as double notes. I did play octave chords. Most of the time at the beginning of my songs or sometimes at the end. And sometimes also had hammer on's and pull off's just to make what ever I was playing sounds better. Anyways just to end this, Hows your studio coming along this week? So take care of yourself and be safe.

    • @RobArnoldWorld

      Right on Darren! I can't really comment much on those # and minor chords. I'm not really familiar.
