I used to get so hung up on playing everything exactly as the artist does. Now its just about the feel and having fun! 🤘
🤘😎
The only song I’d be adding would be The Shortest Straw! AJFA is hands down my favourite album of all time. Holds up so well even today. By the way, that tone is delicious!
Thanks dude! And I'd say The Shortest Straw is probably also my favorite tune from Justice!
Yeah, my favourite song from Justice to. That grove and the riffs are nasty.
Such a Patriotic feel to that albums riffs if that hits home
@@orokusaki7595 Well said!🇺🇸
To live is to Die will always be my favorite Metallica song. I absolutely love when James plays the leads. Shit brings a tear to my eye.
I put myself through rhythm guitar boot camp back in the 90’s by learning as many Metallica riffs as I could. I would sit for hours a day trying to perfect my technique. I was really able to condition my right hand for down picking and I still go back to the Master of Puppets main riff to get warmed up sometimes. Hetfield is the GOAT 🤘🏻
I did the exact same thing! All guitarists looking to build their chops should as well!💪
Hetfield is a living legend
One thing that's cool about Metallica is that their riffs are often quite simple but still so incredibly melodic. Even though there are so many talented bands out there today I kind of miss that type of writing/music. Anyhow, one of the first riffs I learned when I was a kid was Wherever I may roam, figured it out on a cheap acoustic guitar and felt like a king!
Also never forget the drums, even those were melodic and creative, just listen to the intro in Justice for all, still so epic.
first time I listen Metallica, I was 12, 1991 someone traveled at bought the cassette for me just simply because there was a line buying it. since that day i played that cassette forever. second cassette was a home made that included a bit of all the best from kill ‘‘em all to justice. It was then that I got myself a guitar too.
What a joy to watch this was 🙌🏼 and thanks for the little shout out mate🤘🏼
Haha right on Cal! 👊😉
Of wolf and man is a great riff so is the ending breakdown in bleeding me. This video just reminds me how James is the riff master. He just makes perfect riffs.
I could listen to you talk Metallica all day long!!! Sooooo glad to see you mention “To Live is to Die”… absolutely criminally underrated song!!! You mentioned most of my favorites like I knew you would!
Also got my merch from the anniversary show, Amazing quality!! Thank you guys SOOOOO much for making it available to us who couldn’t make the show!! CHIMAIRA FOR LIFE!!!! 🤘
Awesome bro! 👊🤘
Yes really, To live is to die is such an underrated song, it hold all the honors, glad you played it....
I was a freshman in high school when kill ‘em all came out. Changed my life forever. Spent forever (trying to play😂😂😂) playing those riffs. Whiplash, seek and destroy, no remorse, jus the whole album, an endless onslaught of riffage. Still to me the best metal album ever. Pure agression and energy. Next up I’d say the #1 pure Metallica riff is disposable heroes. That gallop riff and descending chromatic chords…just pure intensity that helpless canon fodder feeling. And that intro riff to fight fire (The fast chug, not the melodic part) then the interlude riff.
I saw Metallica with cliff twice. What an amazing musician he was.
Awesome man! Cool you got to see them with Cliff! You ever see our cover of Disposable Heroes? First link in description!🤘
@@RobArnoldWorld awesome cover. What you said about for whom the bell tolls, it’s so accessible and doable. I think that’s the thing about Metallica’s massive appeal, is that their riffs and songs are not out of reach. And that great riffs and songs don’t require Olympic level gymnastics on guitar. And James gave status to rhythm players. That was cool.
@@robmandel3413 Exactly man! Inspirational riffs are what it's all about!
Ahhh, The Circle of METAL Life. You paying tribute to your influence that made you the guitar player you are. And then reading comments from young guitarist, on here that you have influenced. Pretty cool. Great video.
That is cool as hell man👊 And surreal!
Great riffs can create a picture. The band Dark Funeral. Some of the riffs and chords they play truly make you think the end of the world is here. It is unbelievable
That long sleeve T is awesome
Sad but true was a game changer!!!
The entire interlude section of Orion is my favorite thing Metallica has ever written. Especially the riff right before the solo!
I feel a part II coming!!!
For the intro of the "Ride the lightning", play the palm muted open low E string between each note. Night and day !
That 91’ Moscow show still is one of the best still and yes that song on the set is the best song
Metallica has been my no.1 all time favorite band since I was 16 in 2008 (31 now) and yet I haven’t seen them yet. Like you, I def owe my guitar-playing life to Metallica for sure
Cool! You should try and catch them on this current tour!
The first Metallica song that I learned to play was Seek and destory. Just me about 6 to 8 weeks to learn. I was having lessons from a school friend of mine Darren Elliot. I was 15 going on 16. Let me just tell you that my friend Darren by the time he was 17 he could play the first three Metallica in full. And he even know Kirk's guitar solo's. I would say that he was that good, he could of took Kirk's place. I did go on to learn more Metallica songs after that. I found it a little hard at first, but once I got the hang ot it. It did start to get easier. Most of the tunings was in E. I did cheat by buying a guitar magazine to learn enter sandman and unforgiven. Thank you Rob for showing me some of your favorite Metallica riff's. Love your long sleeve Ride the lightning Shirt. I was going to buy that myself last year, but I brought the long sleeve Garage days $5.98 instead. And my reason for that is. Becauae that was my first Metallica vinyl.
Nice Darren!🎸
I heard somewhere years ago that the main riff to Sad But True, had a baritone, an octave below, cleverly blended in.
Not quite sure how true it is.
Wherever I may Roam is one of my favourites.
Such a spaced out vibe about it.
Reverbs and room sound back then, was something special.
Agreed! And I think I've heard that same thing about the baritone.
It's true. There's footage of Hetfield playing the baritone on the making of documentary they did..
Wherever I may roam from the black album is for sure my all time fav 😎🤘🏻
Definitely!
Ahahahaha! I thought I was the only one who played those dead notes during Sad But True at 4:15! As a kid jamming out in my room, I had no drummer so I used to do that, taking place of that drum fill.
Haha that's awesome! Such a signature little drum fill and the part sounds naked without it!👊🎸
1st album I heard was Ride the Lightning in around 85. I was 9 years old.
Great choices! And you “Killed ‘Em All!”
👊🤣
Harvester of Sorrow. The first riff I play when I warm up. Great video! ❤
Awesome Bri!🤘
My favorite is definitely the bridge section of blackened
Great list. And you're right, you can go on forever. But a couple of my favorites not listed "The Thing that should not be", "Blackened", " Holier Than Thou". Thanks for making this video 🤘😎🤘
Hell yeah! All classics for sure!🤘
Here’s my top 10 riffs that got me to playing guitar and hooked on metal in no particular order
-One
-And justice for all
-Search and destroy
-Disposable heroes (this song doesn’t get enough praise)
-Sanitarium
-Masters of puppets
-Fade to black
-Call of Ktulu
-Four horsemen
-Jump in the fire
Hey Rob. So sorry I couldn’t make the chimaira reunion show(s). If/when you guys ever play out and it’s closer to me i will definitely make it out. At that time financially it was not feasible for me to attend… as much as I wanted to enjoy witnessing a reunion of such “magnitude”. I hope you understand.
Of course I do! Next time for sure! 🤘 Cool list too! You ever here's Chimaira's cover of Disposable Heroes? ua-cam.com/video/m00ViRcM5rM/v-deo.html
@@RobArnoldWorld holy shit…. I’m clicking right now!
@@RobArnoldWorld man, that intro makes me really miss my Wah pedal… it got destroyed in a basement flooding where my band was practicing. 😔
@@BadJokesBrian Get another! My go-to is the Zakk Wylde Cry Baby!
One word Mr. Rob, Ba
..tter...y! Great list. Love the content brotha. 🤘
Thanks Randy!🤘
I was only 3 when the black album came out, but it still saturated the airwaves along with load and reload when I was growing up. I bought the black album tab book when I first started playing guitar, and they were the first songs I tried learning. Wish I would have discovered pre black album Metallica sooner, but being being a teenager in the early 2000s with uranium and headbangers ball exposed me to a plethora of bands like yours and I didn’t gain appreciation to the earlier albums until an adult.
Better late than never! 😝🎸
I’ve spent hours and hours learning metallica songs on the guitar. I started playing piano about 3 years ago and now I get to play metallica on the piano. Sounds beautiful. 🤘
Nice! There are so many amazing Metallica renditions on many different instruments, and they all sound killer, because the songs are killer! I just saw Nothing Else Matters played on a harp, and it was magical!
@@RobArnoldWorld True. Oh nice! I would love to see/hear that in person.
Blackened is a stellar riff exercise. Seek & Destroy and No Remorse are what made me love Kill 'Em All.
Chimaira's cover of Disposable Heroes is my absolute favorite straightforward Metallica cover. (Apocalyptica's cello cover of One, Rodrigo y Gabriela's nylon string cover of Orion, and Art vs Science's loungejazz cover of Enter Sandman are all pretty rad variation covers, though.)
Awesome thanks man! We're super proud of that Disposable Heroes cover! 🤘
Love this
👊
Great list. “The Thing That Should Not Be” is a monster riff. “Battery” too.
Harvester of Sorrow! First Metallica riff I learned over 2 decades ago. Still kicks ass to this day!
Hell yeah!
Hey!!! That pic of James is from the esp catalog cover. 2016 I think.
2010!
YES! I have that catalog somewhere.
the first four albums are pure gold, death magnetic and hardwired have some good riffs, i especially like spit out the bone from the hardwired album.
Personally one of my favorites is the octave chord riff in Wherever I May Roam.
Rob, I bought Master when it was first released and had no idea who Metallica was. Needless to say, music was changed from that point on!!!!
About the age of 14 or 15 i basically had the Metallica discography in tablature books from Ride the Lightning all the way through to the first S&M, for a solid 2 years all i learned were Metallica songs, and for favorites Harvester of Sorrow and Don't Tread on Me are right up there as just fun to jam out
Same for me! But I had Kill em' All through The Black Album. Did nothing my entire summer after 8th grade but learn Metallica songs!
One of the sickest guitars I've ever seen. Awesome Rob 🤘
Thanks Gavin! I've been LOVING it lately!🎸
Fvck Sake$!! I had to pause your video & go watch that Harvester performance once again…EPIC!!🤘🏼
Yes!🤘
Cool list! Where u get that shirt? I need that. Thanks!
www.metalshop.us But it was awhile ago!
I definitely learned "For Whom the Bell Tolls" when I was a teenager for exactly the same reason you mentioned here. I also remember trying to keep up with all the gallops and right hand stuff in general on "Disposable Heroes" but that was little more difficult haha
Nice!🤘
You know what I really love about this video? We're about the same age and hearing you talk about how you got into Metallica is really taking me back. I remember my first exposure to them on Justice but being too young to really grasp such heavy fast music or understand a 10minute song with no lyrics. My earliest memory heavy of music was Van Halen and Led Zeppelin. The Black Album was the one that really got me into Metallica and then exploring their catalogue was an incredible Journey. Being in a garage band jamming on the drums with my friends, For Whom the Bell tolls was on our list! One of the reasons Chimaira was such an influence on me is because I can hear all of my favorite music in your music. This is a fantastic video again my friend!
I love that man! 👊 And yeah, those were the days back then... discovering Metallica, jamming with your buddies in the garage, Cd's... Hell yeah.
I'm a HUGE Van Halen fan as well!🤘
Rob I've never owned an ESP guitar.... but man your guitars are so sweet it's got me thinkin'........
I back em' 100% man! And recommend you go for it!
All the best Metallica riffs come after a guitar solo 🤘🏼😝🤘🏼
12:30 This part Is funny to me cause Chimaira's riffs sounds beastie to me.
My first Metallica album was the black album it was my gateway to metal like many others. I worked my way back in their catalog and then I saw the video on MTv for Symphony of Destruction and I had found my band ! I still loved Metallica but I was introduced to Metallica through friends and Megadeth I felt like I had stumbled upon or discovered something I could turn my friends on to. Most of them didn’t get it lol , I was the “Megadeth” guy. I really liked the technicality of And Justice for All but not the long songs and I think that might be why I enjoyed Megadeth so much.
The Black Album for a whole generation of metal heads is the most important album of all time and I don’t care that the songs are slower it’s still one of Metallica’s best.
I also have a massive love for BOTH Metallica & Megadeth. I discovered them around the same time, and had the same experience as you, with The Black Album and Countdown being the first albums of theirs I consumed.🤘
Overall, great list. Only one I’d add off the top of my head is Blackened (main riff).
Seeing that all these riffs are on the first 5 albums, I’d love to see a follow up video on your thoughts on Load and beyond. Whether it’s top riffs or general thoughts.
Metallica is my absolute favorite band. Always has been and always will be. In another video of yours you was talking about riffs under the solo… one of my favorites is James riff under the solo in Through the Never. If you’ve never really checked it out…. It’s awesome!!
Hell yeah!
Dude solid list. I was hoping you’d do the next big riff in orian though. You know the one I’m talking about! That one grooves hard.
For Whom The Bell Tolls was the first song I played from start to finish 🙂
Metallica bonds us all indeed 👊🏻
👊😝
Good god damn Rob, did you have to make the tone dead on too? Show off! 😂
Hey I appreciate that! 🤘🎸
Brilliant playing and killer selections Rob!
Thanks Mike!🤘
I was hoping you would do To Live is to Die. I remember when you did the video for the contest. So good. Cant argue any of these picks.
Uhh, I did! Two parts from it as a matter of fact.
@@RobArnoldWorld I know. Haha.
Edit: I didnt mean for it to seem like you didnt. I just meant that Im glad you did.
@@RobbieFitzgerald Ahh! My bad! I obviously misread it! haha 🤘
@@RobArnoldWorld No worries man. I couldve worded it better!
@@RobbieFitzgerald 👊
Awesome video Rob. Glad to see song that inspired my username on all my social media made the list as the first song
Master and Blackened are definitely in my top 5.
Sick that you opened with Harvester of Sorrow!
When I was a teenager and UA-cam was just becoming a thing that Metallica Moscow show and Chimaira at Download 2007 were my after school routine and Harvester & Pure Hatred were my go to riffs 🤘
Nice!🤘
So Cool!! at 5:10 a for sure influence for the song "Power Trip"..
haha good call!
You played that clean part on to live is to die like the record. I thought I was listening to the record
🙏 I tried to do it justice! (no pun intended 😝)
Hey Rob just wanted to say that I'm a late comer to the party as far as Chimaira is concerned as I found you when searching for Floyd Rose set up tips but man you dudes rock and I super enjoy the you tube channel. Anyways 🤟🤟
Awesome man! Happy to hear it and welcome aboard! 🤘
And justice for all is my favourite album so many great riffs on that classic no bass tho lol that guitar is gorgeous rob
🤘
Excellent video brother. Definitely a lot of the same riffs that helped me love playing guitar. Like I said before, Seek was my first ever to learn on guitar so that has to be one of my favs for sure. Keep rockin brother 🤘🤘
Right on Rob! 🤘👊
I learned drums and then guitar from Metallica and Kirk was my biggest lead guitar influence - I fucking love those guys 🤘🏼
Kirk and James were my teachers too! 🤘
@@RobArnoldWorld
It's always good to learn from the best 😎
Harvester of Sorrow ftw🤘🏼🤘🏼
Just a down to earth dude! Been a fan of Chimaria since the Impossibility of Reason. I still say the one solo of yours that just blows my mind everytime I hear it is Army Of Me
Appreciate that brother! 👊 I did a play through of Army here on the channel. You ever check it out?
@RobArnoldWorld I have not. But will definitely check it out. I didn't even know you had a UA-cam channel until I started following the recent shows you guys did. I have your Metal Guitar Instructional DVD that I bought years ago because you inspired me to get into playing music. I last saw you guys live in 2007 with Kataklysm. Man how time has gone by
The Army of Me is so sick.
@@acrevelations8457 Awesome bro! And welcome aboard! Here's that Army vid: ua-cam.com/video/1c_OJ9E53us/v-deo.html
Awesome video man, do a top Chimaira riffs list!
Great idea bro! 🌮
Do you remember doing that cover of Disposable Heroes back in 2005? I loved that track. You nailed the solo on it! Can't remember what it was for though, Kerrang maybe? Some kind of MOP tribute album.
Hell yeah! ua-cam.com/video/m00ViRcM5rM/v-deo.html
@@RobArnoldWorld Aye that's the one. Takes me right back to my college days!
@@AWMJoeyjoejoe 🤘🎓
Of wolf and man is so underrated great heavy grooving riffs
I know this is a metallica video. But man I want chimaira to come back 😩
ROB! This is RAD!!!
How in the world did you keep this video under 15 min! 😆
Sooooo many amazing songs/riffs to choose from ❤ this could easily be a 2 hr vid.
I remember hearing the album ‘ride the lightning’ for the first time. I thought I just discovered gold! 😆
It’s still my fav Met album
Awesome video!!
👍😃🫵
Thanks Todd! Guess I'll have to do a part 2!🤘
Awesome tone bro!
What equipment did you use?
Thanks dude! STL Tonehub Mark Lewis suite.
Almost 100% confident the first Metallica album I purchased was master of puppets! The thing that should not be was so heavy and savage! Love that riff!
Totally! And that song has one of my favorite solo's ever!
hey Rob. Great video as usual. Orion is when I new I loved Metallica. Quick question, have you ever tried "Flow" guitar picks?? James uses them now so I bought a pack to try.... they make it so much easier to play!!! I recommend you try. You don't even need to get his actual signature picks. just try a flow in the size you prefer.
Thanks dude! Nope never tried em'!
Thanks!

@@aaroneliprice Constant chill deep inside! 🤘🥶
First Chimaira show I went to you had a ride the lighting t shirt. Was an amazing show. You seemed like an intense dude, nothing how you are on the youtubes.
The stage always brings out a certain ferocity!
My first Metallica show was Download festival 2004. The show Lars missed and Joey Jordison and Dave Lombardo filled in. Great unique first show. Only show Lars has ever missed
Badass dude- THAT was a special show, and I know you're proud to have witnessed it! What a night! 🥁
Disposable heroes
Try playing some Metallica songs in dropped tuning. That would be cool
I actually have many times across my videos in various spots where I wanted to demonstrate something Metallica related, but was holding a guitar in drop C, and was too lazy to grab a guitar in E! 🤘🤣
Not really related to this video but did you have a signature 7 string guitar because I know you have your six string esp. I wish I could find it
Also I love the Chimaira cover of disposable heroes
Thanks dude! I'm super proud of that cover! My very first custom shop ESP, the RA-1, was never produced as a signature model, but it exists all on its own! Here's a video on it if you haven't seen it! ua-cam.com/video/7vGhD2yXcNE/v-deo.html
Was waiting for disposable heroes haha
Where did you get that shirt, Rob? It's badass
Right here! www.metalshop.us
Unfortunately though, it appears they may no longer have it in stock.

So many great riifs. Rob did you like 72 seasons album?
I'm trying to get into it, a little bit here and a little bit there!

100% ohhh Yehhh Yehhhh.
The black album is a masterpiece 🤘
Agreed!🤘
🤘😆 Classic Metallica is the best. There rhythm tone was way better than now.
Nothing better than watching the riff master shredding. Maybe I’m biased here, but those riffs being played by you sound even better than the originals. No disrespect to Metallica though. 🤘
I'm not worthy! 👊😝

Garage Days The 5.98 ep

Master of Puppets, Call of Ktulu and All Unforgiven parts, One and Fade to Black, Sanitarium, My Friend of Misery, And justice for All, To live is to die.....

Hey man! You forgot disposable heroes 😤
A banger for sure! Here's our cover of it: ua-cam.com/video/m00ViRcM5rM/v-deo.html
Rob is a huge Metallica fan? Then I'm an even bigger Rob fan now. 🙂
👊😎
Master of Puppets album is a great place for guitarists to start learning. Especially for rhythm
Top riffs by Sepultura and Cannibal Corpse next, please🎉
That'll be sick!
Hey dude, I'm sure you're aware of that but since you don't mention it in this video... "Am I evil ?" is NOT a Metallica song, but a cover by Metallica of a Diamond Head classic which actually provided the template to a lot of early Metallica stuff. To their credit, they never denied Diamond Head's huge influence on Metallica's heaviest material.
Yep! But I've got a thing about covers where whatever version I hear first, is what I like. Couple examples... Zero The Hero from Cannibal Corpse (Black Sabbath), and The Hunt from Sepultura (New Model Army.. I think)...
Anyway... I heard those first, and I love them! Had I listened to the originals first, I probably wouldn't have gotten into them. I'm sure everyone can relate in one way or another. 🤘
