I don't understand why UA-camrs make videos that take minutes before they get to the point. I post the times too. They haven't figured out that people are not interested in the talking and don't want to waste their time waiting for the content.
@@kostikyoda1078 I think he's a good player and like his content but that has nothing to do with the filler in the videos that UA-camrs make. As far as having exposure to content that's not an issue for me, I study under a studio musician who teaches me shred, gypsy, fusion, jazz, bluegrass, country, theory, technique, and other stuff not in music books. I have no problems when it comes to learning real guitar. These licks were "in" in 1989, that's when I learned this type of shred...
You know what that means? You should be playing sequences that require a lot of pinky use to get that sucker in shape. We all had these struggles, my friend! Also, that was pretty funny 😅
FYI for those who may not know... a lydian scale has a raised 4th and is the same notes as the major scale of the 5th... so if you play an A lydian scale it's really the same as an E major scale. This is the same in any key, and if it's easier for you to play a minor scale it's the 3rd's minor scale... in this case a C# minor scale. Happy Pickin' edit... ps, no dis to you Ben with me sharing this and I do thank you for the vid.
hey there Uncle Ben! I am a country guitar player who started playing guitar as a teen to be an 80s shredder. I have since been going back to my roots and found your videos! Great stuff! glad to be a new Nephew!
the best teacher on youtube. tells you the secret and truth about shredding, unlike other turorial vids that only gives you headache and very complicated exercises that aren't really beginner friendly, only cares for views and all that sh*t. lol
"Playing straight through scales in the middle of your solos is difficult and boring" The best intro to a guitar lesson I have ever seen. Honest, hilarious, and informative.
You should be endorsed by youtube because u r one of their biggest musical assists. U could basically be employed by them as a UA-cam guitar teacher, ur free lessons r more useful then most of the other 1mil plus subscriber channels combined
Someone commented, thank you for giving me the desire to practice more and I say, thank you for giving me the desire to ask my son in law for my guitar back so I CAN practice more! That may sound a bit callous but my father left me his Les Paul Gibson, (not sure of year, somewhere between 58 and 63 and looks exactly like that cherry red one Angus Young likes to play). I never learned how to play guitar but always wanted too, just never figured I’d get the chance so I gave it to my son in law who has never once played in in 3 years; it just hangs on his wall for decoration. I started to take piano lessons when I was 17 but I play by ear; never could read music and the teacher insisted I read the music only which looked like Greek to me. I used to sing though so I learned a little bit. However, your teaching is fabulous and really makes sense to me. It is explained well and demonstrated well. I can see, and hear what your doing and am pretty good at playing what I hear and see, at least on a piano. Hopefully I can translate that to guitar. I’ve only seen two of your videos and I love them! Gotta find some way of getting that guitar back! Thank you!!!
this concept is the smartest thing I've seen since my friend showed me how to butter the loaf THEN slice it so you don't rip it...and speaking of ripping it, yess!
You are the first UA-camr I ever gave money to. Thanks for being awesome! This world needs more people like you with real skill and a fuckin' backbone.
I’ve been playing guitar for 38 years (yikes-just scared myself) and I would just like to say that your lessons and teaching method are the best I’ve found on UA-cam. Thanks.
I really think Ben is an awesome teacher. He NEVER mis-speaks a single word, his fluid speech is worthy of an TV Anchor Man.. Anyway that trait makes it so easy to follow him. THANKS from "Mr Step-dad speed".
You won't find a better guitar instructor on youtube than Uncle Ben, IMO. Thanks for helping me not suck at guitar. I have grown leaps and bounds since I found your channel. 🎸👍

A friend of mine does a pattern he calls "backpedaling" similar to what you showed at the end of the video, but he also plays the notes descending. He ascends three strings (EAD) then reverses and descends (DA) then ascends three strings (ADG) then reverses two strings and so on. Once you get to the top you reverse the whole pattern and play it descending three strings then ascending two. It makes for an enormous lick that lasts forever
oh what is this, my old guitar teacher comments on the new vids i have to watch cuz he "doesn't do private lessons anymore" and tomarrow is saturday weekened wanks and Robert live but i cant do any cuz like a normal person weekends are busy af.
Uncle ben, i wish you were there back in 2008. I wanted to play bass to cover maiden/Metallica... i did the best i could but still, they asked me to turn my bass off. Now after 12 years, I believe i can play bass/guitar leads behind any backing track. But still, lack the speed to make a crowd go wild. You are my hero!!!!
This video was the “ah ha” moment for all the modal training and picking exercises I’ve been working on the last couple months. I was having no problem navigating the scales and landing on the “right” notes but whenever I tried to burn in between phrasing I would just end up noodle shredding up and down the scale, this explained exactly what I was confused about, more than enough to chew on for a while. Thank you!
Man, that run at 13:30 is awesome! It instantly made me nod my head which means something without bass and drums. On the lower strings that pattern could also be used for some tasty riffs. Got to try it!
Ben your videos and ideas for technique have ignited my interest in picking up the guitar again! After a discouraging couple of years with lacking inspiration I am excited about playing and learning again.
I've been playing for 50 years and am still the slowest player on the planet. I think that may be because I have rarely come across a teacher who taught speed in a logical and interesting way - at least not enough to keep my attention. You are a rare exception, and I thank you sir! I'm actually practicing scales for the first time in decades.
DUDE I JUST LOVE WATCHING YOUR VIDEOS...EVEN IF I DONT HAVE MY GUITAR WITH ME. YOU'RE JUST AN ENTERTAINING DUDE. Your Step Dad shred skills are awesome Uncle Ben, thx again 4 all you share with us, now i gotta practice this one, hey could u plz do some Paul Gilbert taps & Hammer on's ? i luv that kinda stuff, thx again, take your vegatables & eat your medicine
I am a mutant. I forced work on my pinky at a very early point and now I have an insane pinky and do all kinds of weird wide runs. But I have other problems. No matter what you work on, you'll neglect something else. The fun is in the phrasing. But this is what someone meant who I heard recently saying that Marty Friedman's playing is based on patterns of 6 notes. I was envisioning 6 notes on 2 strings - makes no sense. This is brilliant though - I shall have to work on this.
Hey Uncle Ben, I'm loving your lessons, and I feel like I've already improved because of them, so thank you man, you're the best I guitar UA-camr out there. I have a suggestion for why we suck at guitar. I don't know how to practice properly. It sounds dumb but a lesson on how to structure practice and how you fit it into your day, stay motivated etc would be really valuable. Right now I don't think I'm using my time as effectively as I could be. Thanks again brother!
Thank you for the lesson! Your comment about the guitar 🎸 your using gave me pretty laugh 😂. I have taken note on it because you have some bad ass equipment.👍
WOW!!! Thank you, VERY Much, Ben, for all of this Amazing, well explained, useful, helpful information!!!! GREAT Stuff!!.... Now, ....to practice!!!! A LOT!!!.......... You have Really given me an APPRECIATION for "Shredding"!!!....
