  • Everything you need to know so you can play and sound like Gary Rossington. Gary's guitar tone was a huge part of the Lynyrd Skynyrd sound - he played most of their guitar solos. There's a good chance that if you heard a Lynyrd Skynyrd song, you heard Gary Rossington.
Many guitar players try to get the Gary Rossington sound (why not, it's so cool!). It can be a difficult quest to find his tone. I've been playing Lynyrd Skynyrd songs for over 15 years and I'm sharing what I do to get an authentic Gary Rossington sound.

Tom. Gary's first solo in t for Texas. At Asbury Park live 1977. OMG. the harmonics he pulls out of that 1959 les paul. Even made Ronnie look over at Leon. With a big grin on his face. Even Ronnie was amazed at some of the sounds
Gary could bring to the table.
Definitely an amazing thing to see and hear.

Tom it is Great to see you pop up again. Gary was such a nuanced player, very few realize the outstanding guitarist he was and his unique contributions. Such a humble guy also. One of the reasons he never got the recognition he deserves. How cool it would have been to see you step in and carry on his Legacy in the band since they're carrying on. Of all bands, if Johnny is able to keep on, they deserve to because they always made the music bigger than their own persona, even Ronnie. Your fans are going to jump & shout that you're back, you've been missed !!!

Gary Rossington is my favorite lyrical player. And like David Gilmour he could also funk out, but he also had great country chops. He played through Hiwatt earlier I know...well when Hiwatt came out in '69ish. Allen Collins said they dimed out their Peavey Mace amps, and rolled the guitars volume back. Watch *Freebird - Old Grey Whistle Test 1975*. Eat up everything Skynyrd. 3 good docs, full concert b&w video with Steve Gains ripping it up.
    RIP Gary Rossington.

Hi Tom, love your love of Skynyrd. Saw them live many times. While Gary was not a fancy guy, or amazingly fast guitarist, he is nearly unreproducible in terms of his tone and creative personality. I think of him as a “tonologist” adding tone and skeleton to the songs they did. Thank you for carrying the Skynyrd torch for many years!

Excellent instructional video on capturing Gary's tone and techniques. Thanks for taking the time.
I'm guilty of being one of those metal skynyrd guys too... 😄😎
It's just fun chasing tones and putting a heavier edge on some of my favorite Lynyrd Skynyrd tunes... without doing injustice to the original tune.
I love skynyrd just as much as you do.
You've done equally excellent work covering Allen Collins tecniques too. Thanks for those videos as well.
Anyway..plz keep up the good works. I enjoy your insights and observations on everything Skynyrd! 👏🏻🙌🏻✌🏻

I just wanted to drop a quick comment to thank you for all of the extremely useful info you pack into your videos. FINALLY I understand how to get that power amp overdrive that so many of us want. I play through a Blackstar HT 40, which is a fairly high gain amp. I was relying on preamp and pedals in searching for tone, but I think my search (and pedal buying spree) is over. Even on this amp I was able to get a really good tone last night by cranking the channel volume and keeping my gain down around 3-4. Couple this with turning up the mids and raising the bass and treble like you said and Wow! Instant 1976 southern rock tone. And your other tips on how to hold the pick for pinch harmonics and rolling the guitar volume off for clean tones are priceless. I could go on and on. I’m a working musician playing in 2 classic rock cover bands. You would think I would know this stuff already. 🤔
I can’t wait to put all of this to work on my next job this weekend. Thanks again!!

You got that Gary tone setting nailed Tom. Kind of like "second helping" tone! As far as Allen goes, I always wonder if a guitar/amp tech for Allen is still around these days and done any interviews on youtube. My point is...I wonder what Allen's amp settings were on his Peaveys.

Likewise, when I first started listening to Hendrix in 1991, he had only been dead for 20 years, and the Skynyrd plane crash had only happened 14 years before, though I didn't get into Skynyrd until 1993. • @brushstroke3733
      @brushstroke3733 6 місяців тому

I would think that ES-335 can come close enough to be at least satisfactory. Those bad boys can have seriously great tone. The main thing is to set the amp to that "edge of break-up" level of gain. It's a very slight amount of distortion. All of us who grew up on metal tend to way overdo distortion.

Thanks so much! It's a tough sound to replicate. I've been trying to get their sound for 16 years now. The first few years were tough but I started to get it around year 12. The more you listen, the more it can influence your playing. In my case, I played so much Skynyrd all the time! It took me years to get an authentic feel for their technique and tone. I'd watch them play live and see how each player attacks the neck to get their sound.

Rossington, Skynerd or any other player/band this is good tone advice. Guitarists using WAY TOO much gain these days in my opinion.

Talk about slow hand, Gary should have got that nickname. Can barely even see him playing half the time because he's so I don't know how to explain it. but it doesn't look like he's playing the guitar sometimes.

Gary put JBL's in his peavey amps in the 70"s just for reliability, but all the break up in his tone was all from the amps.

Did you download any patches for your Katana or just using the amp regular?

Using my Boss Katana (version 1) amp with my created patches. Nothing fancy. I added a Tube Driver effect to give the amp a tube sound. The rest is EQ and drive settings via the amp knobs.

Tuesday tone is better on the FOX live one anyway. I didn't like what Al Cooper did on the studio version.

Is that the 50 or 100 watt Katana ?

      100w - I never use the 50 or 100 watt channels. It's amazing how loud 0.5 w is.

While it's nice to emulate the greats or your favorite players Sometimes, I think it's important to find yourself. Your own tone, style & licks. Modern music is kinda boring. not much creativity. it all sounds the same. Just saying ..
