- Gary Rossington of Lynyrd Skynyrd shaped the southern rock sound with his 1959 Gibson Les Paul. Today I'm taking a deeper look into Gary's iconic guitar tone with my Gibson Les Paul 1959 Reissue. I think you'll agree, the tone is amazing!

Hey y'all, I know it's been awhile and it's great to be back!
I've been crazy busy over the past 3 years, and that took time away from my guitar channel. Now I've got some free time to make guitar videos. And, now there's a beautiful new guitar in the picture that really sings!
What did you think of the Gary Rossington tones that Les Paul was getting? Aren't they AMAZING?

R9?
Yes, R9 in factory burst.
Awesome man..
Nope! They were AMAZING! Is there a way to get back to some Allen Collins lessons?
BTW, good to see you again sir!
@@vincentenk4449 I am planning on covering Allen in future episodes!
I've checked back periodically looking for your older videos because they were detailed, insightful, and just plain sounded right on. It would be great if you re-posted those if you had the time. Thanks for all your hard work and for sharing your knowledge and skill.
Great to see you back. You're the man for all things Lynyrd Skynyrd.
Thanks Jim!
I agree, I was actually upset when I couldn’t find ya. Great to hear and see you back
Miss your Skynyrd videos, you had the best ones on the internet
Gary, Allen and Steve..RIP
As well as Ed King.
Dude that Les Paul is fantastic it really captures the vibe perfectly. Gary was amazing. He did a lot of Paul Kossoff type of stuff but he took it to another level. To me the most amazing thing about Skynyrd was how three guys could play and never once step on each others toes. That just doesn't happen.
Thanks! Ed King said it was amazing how nobody had an ego about playing. They made their parts and it fit together.
Who doesn't Love those guys. I was fortunate enough to see them a number of times, before and after Iineup changes. And your enthusiasm is the icing. TY
Gary's style reminds me of a horn section with that tone. Sounds fantastic.
Tom, it is super cool to see you back my friend. No doubt Gary would've approved.
Welcome back! You've been missed!
Great to see you again, Ken! I hope you've been well.
I’m glad you’re back playing
Dude...good to see you again..Tom's rockin back in the house...👍.. I've been playing "I ain't the one "for decades from my head..I would love to see your take on that one..
I love that one too. Perhaps it will make an appearance 😎
Welcome back, Tom. Love your old Skynyrd videos and the enthusiasm you bring to your craft!
Good to see you back Tom and with such a fabulous tribute to Gary Rossington!
Gary was always my favourite. Allan, Steve and Ed were brilliant, but Gary played with his soul and that always did it for me!
Made me so happy to see a new video. I have a deep love for Skynyrd and golf, too. Haven’t met anyone else with that combo of interests! Your videos made me pick my guitar back up several years ago. I remember in a video you mentioned people making fun of you for being so into Skynyrd. Screw those losers. It’s been fun keeping up with your golf videos but please keep the guitar videos coming.
Watch you on your golf channel, glad you’re back doing guitar again.
Thanks for coming back Tom! Hope golf is treating you well, but you guitar stuff is gold!👍🏻👍🏻
Thanks Ian! Hopefully I'll have time to make more guitar videos this year.
Very nice Tom, beautiful tone , I always gravitated to Gary's parts the most, just loved his style and tone I guess
Thanks Scott! I agree. Gary had that smooth, silky tone coming out of his Les Paul.
Like you mentioned something about his laid back charisma helped him play loose and free.
The song "that smell" what an incredible composition , the 3 guitar parts throughout the song is just wonderful, everything about it. Lyrics, melody absolutely brilliant ,
And Gary's intro starts it all perfectly, sounds just as fresh today as it did back then.
Thanks for coming back Tom! Really missed you brother!
Thanks Adam!
Awesome. Look forward to every lesson.
Great to have you back man.!!!
AWESOME! Tom's Back🤘
Sweet LP!! Missed your videos.
Good to see you back on You Tube!
Very cool to see you again
Welcome back brother! Definitely missed ya! Rock on 🤘🏻
It's good to be back, Paul. Thanks!
Oh man, I learned so many Skynyrd songs from your old videos, glad you are back.
So good to see u back !!!! 😎🎸🦅🔥
Nice to see you back! Put down those clubs and play some Skynyrd!
I miss your early videos man! I hope youve archived them somewhere and we can see them again.
Man I love playing Gary’s stuff. I’ve got a epiphone gold top 50s standard. And an orange 35rt amp with a joyo vintage phaser for certain songs. It’s awesome.
SWEET - love that setup
Gary might just have the best guitar tone I've ever heard.
Welcome back Tom great to see you kick it up the Skynyrd again
Hey Tom! Glad your back jamming some Skynyrd! We came out to litchfield last October to play some golf and was hoping you were out at the range but unfortunately you weren't. Keep playing guitar and whacking the golf ball!
I might have been playing guitar when you went to Litchfield CC 😎
Welcome back Tom. Thanks for teaching me all I know as I grew up.
Tom tom tom. Man im speechless you have no idea how long ive been trying to find you. I was subd to you back when. Before you got your first Gibson. It 2as just a few of us. I remember Mr. Ed king was talking to you and was about to give you an example i believe of saturday night special that originally he wanted to do but 5hey went a different way with it. But we lost him before he had a chance to share it with you.
I cant find any of your old footage. Gary rossington is the reason i picked up a guitar and you are the reason i kept learning. You are such an inspiration to me. Thank you for what you do. Im 54 yo i dont have a ton of time left. So do an old man a favor and ģet them skynyrd tutorials back out.
Love every second of this entire video. Just great playing, one classic riff right to the next one.
You should teach us how to play these. Super slowed down for a novice like myself :)
He’s back!! Glad to see you making guitar videos again. Your old ones taught me so much, helped me get the guitar sound I was after & nailing Skynyrd songs. Hope to see more videos!
More videos are coming. Thanks for the kind words!
Thank you ,you really are the Skynyrd authority on youtube !
Glad to see youre back! I've missed all the great skynyrd vids!
Are you going to reupload any of your old videos?
Yes please 👍🏼🤘🏼
Yes, please do. One day I went looking for your videos Tom and couldn't find any. Please consider uploading them.
Yes! I was so sad to see that all of the old videos were gone!
Welcome back Tom! We sure missed you. Not sure what happened a few years ago when you went from Skynyrd to Golf....you must have hit your head pretty hard 😲 Comin' Home was the right thing to do. 🙂
Hi Tom!! Welcome back buddy. I've been hoping you'd be back at some point. Best wishes, Mark. 🙂
I love the new guitar. Can't believe the great tone your getting from stock pickups. Congratulations and welcome back.
Rob Suelflohn
Wow what a beautiful guitar Tom - loving it - sounds frickin amazing!
💪🎸 🤟
The man is back!!! Good to see you back on the UA-cam airways.
That 59 Reissue really does the trick!
Those Boss Katana amps are the best! I have a white 100W 1x12, there’s nothing I can’t do on that amp.
You don't need to spend $1000s for that perfect amp anymore - the Katana does it all!
Hey there Tom I’m familiar with this Guitar but I forgot the name Gary gaveher I think it’s a really nice story behind it as well thanks for sharing
Hey bobby, Berniece, after his Mum
Cool breeze
Welcome back. Will you be reuploading your old content?
Really like the top on that '59 LP rep. It's basically perfect. My '59 could pass for it easily. Big difference is, mines an Epiphone. I went through a bunch of them when they first released in late 2020. Settled on an ASFB at 8lbs 15ozs. It's acoustically the loudest electric guitar I've ever heard. It's ridiculous how full sounding it rings out compared to any other one I've seen. I really lucked out, because most of them are pretty horrible looking comparitively. Again, evenly matched, medium sized flame, with gorgeous colors! Perfect top buddy! Salute!
Thanks! When I saw the top I was blown away. The tiger flame is drool-worthy to look at. Sometimes you don't want to play it, you just look at it LOL
Sounds like you picked a good Epiphone. The tone on those Epi's now is way better than I remember from the mid 2000s. They sound much closer to Gibsons. Acoustic resonance is a big key to look for with Les Pauls!
if you can't afford the gibson the epiphone 50's and 59 are really good at quarter the price. sounds good!
It's really impressive. You can put a set of Custombuckers in there and get closer.
Between Epiphone and Gibson, the R9 reissue is in a class of it's own. The craftsmanship, tone, and all the little details is what you pay for. The tone coming from the wood - so fat and crisp.
Epiphone's 59 is impressive for the price (from the videos I've seen)!
@Tom's Rockin Guitar they are exceptional for the price I love the 50s and 59 I want more for backups, also love my old telecasters played one tonight broke a string and had to break out my most expensive guitar which is a tele that I'm scared to play due to the price but it Plays like a dream. Tomorrow I'll go back to my 50s it as well Plays like a dream. Love them all and they all have their place.
RVZ singing about Gary "Prince Charming" Rossington in That Smell
I think Gary did the soulful solo on "One More Time". Can you do that one?
Yes, that's a phenomenal solo!
You tone is awesome!! Any skynyrd lessons coming up? Tuesday gone or simple man?
Damn you play the guitar as well as you hit the golf ball. !!!
It's been a long time since we Rock and Roll. Lol if you turn it up just a hair you might get just a little more sustain I'm kidding glad to see ya back I think I remember Tellin ya I have SG now I sometimes play just cuz you can play the higher notes it still doesn't compare to my ,86 model Les Paul keep em coming 🇨🇱🤘
Tom what pickups did Gary use mostly on his les pauls
Hey Tommy Tone ! What year is your R9 ? I have a 2016 R9 and it sounds killer . I also bit the bullet and bought one of the anniversary 59's Gibson made in 2019 . I love Gibson's but they are hit and miss . When they hit their great . If I buy another Gibson , I'm looking for a 2019 models . This is when that new CEO took over and they kinda went above and beyond that year to make a great impression . My early 2019 Flying V is one of the best sounding guitars I have . I was mad when I received it because it didn't have the Gibson inlay on the headstock . It was just before they switched . But the tone was so good , I couldn't get rid of it .
It's a 2023 - they sound amazing! I've heard about people having issues before, but I haven't had a bad experience with Gibson. I've got a Firebird and an Epiphone LP. Both came without issues. I like where they're headed now with the new direction - the 50s and 60s Standards are things of beauty. You can't beat the tone of that '59 style guitar. There's something extra special about the tone :)
Crispy Gibson les Paul contact
320 yards of beautifully struck notes 😀
photo's
wonderful - Brings back great memories. Fantastic playing + Tone. Cheers from Seattle!
What the hell man. How long has it been. Like 5 years or more.
It's been too long. Great to be back!
Oh, ya think ya can just come in and out of our lives whenever ya want???
No excuses 😂 no days off
@@TomsRockinGuitar Good to see ya back on the strings Tom.
