Collins’ penchant for breaking chords up, hitting diads etc. along with his natural rhythm gives some great insight to his sense of melody and musicality. More than once , when learning a Skynyrd song, you pick up on these little details and wonder how did he come up with that- but it “works” . That was his magic , IMO
I love how you give credit where credits due and acknowledge Allin instead of having a huge ego that makes it look like it's all you ! This is rare & don't ever lose it as you are one of the best teachers I have ever seen because of you Humbleness...
Man the solo to Going Home. The whole outro solo… One of the most underrated greatest in classic rock history. It’s just an absolutely fabulous solo Fitting the song so well
Just came across this randomly in my recommended, I'm glad to see you've made a return to guitar UA-cam Tom! I remember your old Skynyrd based videos helped me out tons during Quarantine. Thanks for the great content!
Allen, Gary, Ed, Steve, & Rickey & Hughie really are, overlooked by music snobs. All World Class in their own right. Tom deserves a mention also, for his ability to channel & play & teach these guys styles with so much accumen 🎸
@@chiefline7084 Agreed 👍 No doubt he's put in endless work & dedication. The man also has a gift. If it wasn't a gift also, anybody could do the same ✌️
Thanks Tom, for all the detail & nuance. Allen really was an organic player wasn't he ? Blazing his own trail. Yes more Allen would be cool. You Rock 🤘🎸🎶😎
Gotta hand it to ya Tom you inspired me so much with your playing that firebird and all the righteous lessons, that I got an anniversary issue in 2017. Much respect and thanks. 💪🎸🤟
Awesome video Tom. Love the sound of that Firebird. I've love to see some more Allen Collins related videos. I'm starting guitar lessons with an amazing teacher next Friday. After all these years of trying and failing on my own, maybe I'll finally get somewhere with my Les Paul. Keep up the great work!
Allen’s Rythm playing is a huge influence on my Rythm playing. Very percussive and rhythmic, almost like Malcolm Young in some Aspects. That P90 on his Firebird really made it to! Didn’t you use to have a Trem on your Firebird?
I’ve always thought the acoustic guitar on the studio version of free bird was superb! Turns out that was Allen too. I’ve had trouble replicating his style
@@darkarcher22miller44 yup he does all the Rythm Parts in the slow portion! And we all know what happens when it gets fast! Allen is a tremendous Rythm Player, probably the best in the band imo Altough he could certainly more then hold his own in the lead parts with the other three guys
Thank you so much Tom for this wonderful tribute to Allen's talent. Allen is my favorite. This solo was the first I learned and you video help me to understand better the way he used on the neck. Will
@TomsRockingGuitar, I love your channel man. Allen and Gary, really are the root of my guitar playing and seeing somebody explain it so perfectly, it’s just so encouraging. Thank you so much for giving out the free tips! Keep it up brother
Thank you for taking the time to share your knowledge and skill Tom. Allen Collins a fantastic guitar player. His solo on Freebird is probably the one he is most known for, but I think his solo on Needle and the Spoon is amazing, great use of the wah pedal. Thanks again Tom, look forward to more of your videos.
Hi Tom! I'm from Germany, but I always loved the guitar playing from Lynyrd Skynyrd. I'm enjoying it, to see that you are deeply enjoyed playing this. To enjoy the own playing is the most important step if you decide to play guitar. I love to feel this. By my own and also watching it. So absolutely great! 🖖🙋♂️
Man if you don't already know. Tom is really really good at deep diving into the little nuances and tiny technique aspects of what great guitarists are doing. And just as important he knows how to explain it to us. Just wait and see what he pulls out.
I know this. I feel it and can see. Never have found one, who could play and explain that good! That's not right, there are a lot very good. But if you are searching this style. I think he is the best.
Allens mother allowed him to form the band in her garage Even Gary said he held the bands sound together Not counting Ronnie’s singing That’s different Ok thanks guys
Opposite of Gary. Ive always thought that Allen looked and sounded to me like he was trying to push the strings thru the neck. Where as Gary looked like someone needed to run up there and tell him. D. And G. And c. To me he was so laid back that youd almost think he wouldn't be in time. Which thats a lot to do with him barely moving his picking hand.😮

Great input! Collins represented straight-up electricity on the stage.
Allen's the one that gave them their sound for sure
So grateful to be named after this man.
I have enjoyed all your video's on Skynyrd. Too bad you never got to interview Allen. He was one of the nicest people
you would want to meet.
I've always loved the tone of Allen's Firebird. I kinda regret never getting one. I felt his explorer fell a little bit short.

My dad met Allen in 76 my favorite guitarist
Allen has always been my favorite Skynyrd guitarist!!
He gave Skynyrd their sound
Without a doubt!

Man,that tone !! All day
Allen may be the most underated in rock guitar history.

@@TomsRockinGuitar Well, I like ta drink & to dance all night !!!
Plus Allen did eventually put a P-90 at the bridge on the Firebird.

Just stumbled upon this channel after watching your golf videos for a year or so, you’re the man Tom

Love that song! Can you do the outro solo too?!
What settings are you using on the katana ?
Excellent video want to learn in detail but just to fast, could do with tabs to follow in detail. Thankyou
LOVE ALLEN!!
You play them perfectly
Great tone.
TimeIy Iesson. My piano player said he wanted to learn this for next rehearsal; I open FB and there you are. TY
Have fun with this one!
Allens mother allowed him to form the band in her garage Even Gary said he held the bands sound together Not counting Ronnie’s singing That’s different Ok thanks guys
I’m glad someone else is just as/or more obsessed with Allen Collins than I am 😂
look at your fingertips, if they are always peeling off you are bending and sliding. that was great.
i just realized i also have learned a tremendous amount about golf from you!!!!
For a man with a Beavis haircut u surely can play brother!! Love your work!!!
I’m jealous. Homey has a full lid of pelitos
You know what you say,,,about the wood tone,,,the dynamics of the physical guitar
Hey that’s my golf instructor!
Allen's number one influence I believe was Johnny Winter
What song is this lead off?
Comin' Home by Lynyrd Skynyrd
ALLEN WAS PURE RAGE OF JOY,,,,

Well said, Chuck!
cool

😮
How do know thats Allen and not Gary?
There's a tone difference between Allen and Gary. Perhaps I'll make a video on it to show the difference.
