Gary, Allen, Ed and Steve are all the guitar you need to know oh and SRV.
Don't forget Brent mason! Greatest studio musician to ever play that country twang.
How REFRESHING it is to see a young guitar UA-camr with an APPRECIATION for the GENIUS of Skynyrd and Gary. KUDOS!!
Rossington had a swaggering style !!
Gary, Alan, Ed and Steve all great players, will never be a band like LS. Thanks for the tips sounds great
Gary was a quietly confident player. Made him a killer sleeper guitarist. Not "Shredding" or "in your face". Solid Soulful Sublime Southern Rock. In my fav top 5 even stacked next to Gilmore, he def deserved more recognition. Thanks for sharing your skills & spotlighting his techniques Tom. Great Video !!! 🎸✌️
But Gary also did the lead on call me the breeze which is fast lead stuff compared to his more laid back soulful style. Later times he had one of the other guitarists do that lead.. Be Gary did the original lead on the Album. I love Gary's lead stuff on tuesdays gone the Live at the fox album.
@@raybassman7536 I just meant he wasn't a "shredder", but a highly nuanced & gifted player. I agree completely. Just after I started playing, I found a new copy of OMFTR on the street, delivering papers on Sunday am. A "Street Survivor" before the album. I learned a lot playing along & learning. Didn't know it at the time but Gary ( & Allen & somewhat Steve ) taught me bends & so much more. Different players, but right up there with Gilmore in my top 5 ✌️
@@raybassman7536 PS - Tuesday's Gone was the 1st song I tried learning off OMFTR. Sweet Soulful bends & melody. These guys, and I mean the whole family through changes over time, were unmatchable. The current Tribute line-up continues that tradition with spot on killer performances. RIP Gary 🎶🎸🙏
Yes I knew what you meant. I love it when Gary holds notes out, It's so powerful the way he does it. Like in "I Need You." I had the privaledge and Honor to meet Gary and talk to him in a non rushed situation. There were getting ready to board the Bus pretty soon to play at an ampitheatre. I told Gary that even though I am a Bass player, I bought my first Les Paul because of him. I told him I used to listen to OMFTR at night with the lights turned off, and headphones on. I could see those guys playing on stage while listening. Gary Laughed , he got a kick out of that. Then I whipped out my" First And Last" album and he signed it for me.Gary was down to earth, He signed it like he was taught in school to write, so you can read it, No BS rockstar signiture.@@in2livinit
@@in2livinit The most accomplished guitar player was most likely "Ed King" but Gary & Alan have always been my favorite guitar players in the group.
However, the guitar playing on "I Know A Little" is way out of my reach, and that was "Steve Gains" But "Swamp Music" was an "Ed King" tune.
They had some killer, guitar work in all their tunes didn't they?
Another killer guitarist that doesn't get mentioned much is "Duane Roland"
Those first three "Molly Hatchet" albums were truly badass!"
I love Gary Rossington,I think he was Skynyrd s best guitarist
Dang that sounds so good. I've always been a fan of Gary's style, especially in On the Hunt and Gimme Back My Bullets. You've really got his tone and style nailed. I'm really enjoying your return to UA-cam!
Tom you totally channel Gary’s killer moves and your playing has gone from freaking amazing to Monster Bad Ass ! Thanks for these enlightening Garyisms and keeping Skynyrd alive and relevant like they should be ! 💪🎸🤟 Lifts me up 👍
Thanks so much!
I keep watching these over and over. Hair stands up on the back of my neck. Badass
Man these videos are the best, anything skynyrd related is like a early Christmas present!
Man you know you should have been gary replacement after he passed i aint even know ypu was making vids again ive learn all my skynyrd tone from you my guy
Thanks for making this Tom!
Between Gary and Toy Caldwell my main influences are covered. So many great southern rock players. Thanks for the tips!
Happy your back.....Can never get enough of LS....Rockin guitar they were the BEST
I call that the Gary Rossington box, Cry for the Bad Man is almost the same
Awesome stuff
Great tone, sounds just like Gary's.
Thank you Tom for that great video…You are good 👍
Great to see you back on here, Tom!
What happened to all your older videos? They were the best on UA-cam.
Hey Tom,
Can’t thank you enough for the way you teach!
I’ve been watching your golf lessons and now found out how great you are on guitar. You are a very talented person!!
Thanks for all your help! On and off the golf course. I played in a band for over 5 years and when I played golf 3 times a week I used to be a six handicap. More like an 11 now. LOL!
Peace
The lick you did at the 2:35 mark is what I call Gary's main signiture lick throughout his career. He does that one on other songs too.
You're talking about that old "Albert King" lick. Gary loved the blues."
Gary loved the playing of Paul Kossoff a lot too. Albert king is so cool too, and with that special tuning he used to keep secret. There was a guitar magazine issue that rvealed the tuning once about 30 years ago.@@thebluesrockers
@@raybassman7536 You ever watch that concert with "Albert King" & "SRV?
It's an amazing concert. You should look it up here on YT if you haven't ever seen it. It's one hell of a concert.
Right on Tom...Swing hard and look up...
Rockin and Golfing, I love it!!!
Loves these Saturday posts. Feels just like the old days when you used to post on Saturdays.
Bringing back the good ol Saturday schedule :)
I never got to see Skynard, but, I did get to see Rossington-Collins first concert at the Fabulous Fox Theatre in Atlanta. They did an accapela version of Freebird for the encore that lasted 15 minutes! Traded my '78 blonde tele for a 1976 Bicentennial Firebird because... Allen. 3:59 4:12
Yes that riff at 6:00 in your video Gary does that riff in On the Hunt lead too.
It does bring a tear to your eye lol!
Welcome back Tom!!
New subscriber here. Love the way you play. ✌️
Have you covered Things Goin' On? Thanks for giving great coverage of these songs I've enjoyed for 45+ years.
No, but it's on my to-do list!
Can you advise the Katana settings please?
Dude, you’re facial expressions say everything there is to know about Gary Rossington guitar chops that make your face bend to the sound of the notes he plays, the way he bends his strings, the sweet slide… some people just don’t know.
Great vid again, Tom ! Keep 'em coming. Just curious your string gage preference ?
Thanks again! I play .10s on my Les Paul and prefer .9s on my Firebird. I am loving DR BLUES vintage strings right now.
The baddest man to play a les paul ever!
Thanks for putting in the time for this Tom. This may sound dumb but for me I have to ask. Or get your opinion. String muting. While you are cording this string mute that one and this one. Do you think I need to just get down what I'm working on first. Then after I'm comfortable start working on muting unwanted ringage. Or start muting and practicing said riff/song from the beginning. It just seems like a lot for a intermediate player to have to deal with. But any and all advice will be appreciated. Thanks.
My 2-cents... practice like you wanna sound when you actually play. Otherwise when you play, you may risk sounding like you're practising. Better to spend the extra time to really nail something down even if it takes longer opposed to shortcuts and "bad habits". As they say; old habits can be hard to break. Apologies for interjecting MHO Chucklee. Good luck !
@@markusferguson2985 thanks man. My uncle use to tell me. Screw that old saying practice makes perfect. He said if you are practicing wrong then how is whatever you are practicing gonna be right. That's what I've been doing. Just seems to make sense to have it down to muscle memory/habit.
Is to do it all the time. Main reason I ask is because of short term memory loss I have from a car accident in 1990. It's so hard to remember so much at one time for me. But I guess take smaller bites.
I learned by copying a guitar player's style as closely as I could. In my early years I'd play a bunch of Rossington licks. It didn't sound great in the beginning, but over time it got closer to his style. That's how you learn to refine your playing.
Along with the pick, you need to stick a cigarette between your other fingers on the same hand...LOL. Dude was cool.
LOL so true!
Tone settings?
It is you!!! Tom saguto! The golf guy!!!
Jack of all trades!!
Are you getting that tone with your boss amp?
Yes, Boss Katana and no other effects used.
what are they if you do mind sharing..i have a katana 50 mark 2 but im sure i could get close ..do you have a videos out showing the setting's..im a new subscriber..if not i'd like to see ya make one..Thanks Tom for all ya do@@TomsRockinGuitar
@@dinkeredwards5187 You and me both! I just can't get these tones from Katana,I suck😭
@@stingylizard I'm not to sure he reads a lot of his comments..not real sure but I think it would be a great tutorial video for him to do for a lynard skynard tone video..he seems to keep his answers short with most lol Good Luck still working on it off and on myself lol
T, u need to run a geedar/golf boot camp!! Let’s go hammer!
Railroad song please
Only a tiny tip of the pick hitting,,with finger muffling
I make those same faces when I play air guitar on any Lynyrd Skynyrd song. Long time drummer, what can I say???🤷🏻♂️
Great lesson but the camera is out too far.
Don't u think u should learn how to play your seldom first
