I was an exchange student to Japan in Showa58, 40 years ago this year... There was a tatami shop across the street from my host family's poultry and egg shop. The smell of a real rush and rice straw tatami mat is magnificent and incomparable! Even now the smell of a new corn broom in a grocery store can transport me back 40 years!! I have to say I'm shocked and more than a little disappointed that they're using polystyrene foam and staplers now!!
What surprises me more than the machines is that the core of the mats appears to be some kind of foam, instead of the traditional rice straw. I have to wonder how well they do in terms of durability. As for the machines, I guess it's encouraging that there is still enough demand for tatami mats that there is a market for machines to make them.
The straw grass are very expensive because the farmers use to plants are been declined. There is same plants from china and other countries but the quality are not good than it expected. I think that’s the most reason why ………….. BUT! It doesn’t mean that you cannot have the original Tatami mat …….. all you need is to spend more …….. 😉
It looks like some kind of extruded polystyrene foam. If it's dense and hard enough it can be surprisingly sturdy. I doubt this is the same stuff construction people install in walls and under floors.
@@anamarievivero7774Japanase farmers have made an organization to try and get demand for Japanese Tatami mats back up instead of lower quality chinese ones, this would also drive production prices down.
i remember old-style from a *very* old house my obasan had in Gumyoji. When they moved to a new house to live upstairs from their kids, i remember those tatami. i prefer the older one - i don't know if they gave naturally more, or they were trampled for so long they 'broke in', but now that i think about it the feel was nicer. mind you, i think the feel of tatami is marvellous, better than a hardwood floor (which is better than carpet).
I like how the Japanese thought "ya know what, I sure don't like being on hard wood or ground, let's make something cushiony." while the Europeans were making stone flooring.
traditional japanese houses, the living floor is elevated. Many houses, particularly in the cold regions had a "working floor" area that was paved (if they could afford it) or just packed earth.

Tatami mats are so great. When I was in Tokyo I truly admired them and prefer them over American flooring. Comfortable, warm, and so clean looking. What great craftsmanship to watch as for years I wondered how they were made. Job well done. A++++
I used to practice aikido and the gym had real japanese tatamis. Going from that to a gym mat is like going from a Rolls Royce to a Škoda. Škoda will get you there, but there is no comparison in everything else.
I got two of these in my room, each one weighs about 30kg, I really love them in the winter time, cuz the wooden floor is really cold, when sitting on the tatami it is really comfy.
There was a nice, thick layer of foam in each tatami mat and also on the floor underneath. You can't ask for better insulation in the wintertime so long as you give similar treatments to the walls and ceiling!
Love to seeing how they are making new tatami!!! If they can, some of old tatmi can be repair the old tatami!!! and I can see the old tatami is too old to reapir it, so they make a new one.

its funny to watch how other countries contractors do things. i was a flooring contractor. i apprenticed for several years, & worked on my own for many years, its just weird to see how others do it. hes doing basic upholstering, and the sewing isnt much different than the carpet seam sewing i learned as a teenager. its no longer used really, except for expensive larger area rug joining maybe, but its sort of similar

More durable and less likely to grow molds.

How do u clean them if your baby pisses on them?

I had no idea those things had foam in them. I wish my floor were made that way as they seem tremendously comfortable in comparison.
Definitely! You can’t wear shoes or use furniture with legs on them, but as someone who loves being on the floor, I think they’re a great idea!

Wonderful.
I really like the way Japanese work. So precise and satisfactory.

i thought tatami has thin layer.. its actually thick huh.. and has a foam..
How often they replaced one or all tatami out, and do they use the carpet as other countries too?
I guess, that's the sleeping room, because one cant place tables, chairs and other heavy furniture onto these soft mats, exept sleeping bodies. 😗

So the mats are on styrofoam? What were traditional ones made with?
