I love how Sigma maximizes robotics for precision repeatability and (human crafts-men-women) to provide the highest possible quality at the lowest possible cost for said quality. The consumer really benefits here.

It's rare that a company actually provides such an insight into their production. As a photographer who loves sigma lenses this really is so interesting to watch - thank you for that!
It worked: now I want to buy one.

_It's rare that a company actually provides such an insight into their production._
None of the really sensitive trade-secrety stuff, (for instance, the specifics of their lens coatings), can be gleaned from here. 😊
Information about the coatings or materials can be easily optained through materialanalyses for most products. Processtechnology is a well hidden secret for most factorys, and that's for a good reason, since often times the problem is not "what" to produce, but "how", process wise. So If you are familiar with processes of this kind you get quiet alot of information.
I'm a fan of Sigma lens too. They are such a beauty. Here's a like!
I don’t think I’ll be questioning the prices of lenses again. I can see how complex the process is. It’s great that Sigma still produces the more affordable ones.
These are exactly my thoughts. The process is quite complex and the prices now look reasonable
this specific lens is 1,300 CAD
Ni yo
nah. You can get the same quality lenses for 2/3 or even 1/2 of the Japanese price when you get Sirui, Viltrox, or 7arrtisans
@@leetuu1474 most likely garbage and probable the reason i've never heard of these.
Imagine the stress of being so perfect to hand paint the ft numbers. Mind blowing. Japan you are masters of anything you touch.
She is just filling / injecting the paint on the already engraved metal. She is not hand painting. Take it down a notch :D

The moment they print the "Make in Japan" on it is actually really touching! This as much a form of Art as it is technology.
Lenses are expensive, but seeing this gives me an extra appreciation for the love and labor put into making these fine optics. There are no bad lenses from Sigma, beautiful craftsmanship!
I have two Sony lenses that came with dust inside from the factory(probably zero affect on image quality), but my Sigma is spotless!
same thought here, quite incredible
@@taylorhickman84 Yeah I did notice the factory was a bit dusty in the first part of the video. Luckily you have no dust from your Sigma lens

seriously? shame on sony. I have several nikon lenses, the cheapest is 200$, the most expensive is 4000$. all of them came completely spotless, without even a single spec of dust inside. @@taylorhickman84 My only sigma lens (24 1.4) came with a permanent spot on the rear lens element. I didnt bother to return it because it doesnt matter to me but still
As a photographer who owns several Sigma lenses, this is very interesting and fun to watch. Thanks for the video 👍.
In the room at 7:12 in the video, it looks like they use compressed air to blow debris off the lens they are examining, onto an array of already-cleaned lenses. Maybe the lenses are cleaned for inspection and the lenses don't need to be clean for the next step.
I just watched my Sigma 24-70 f2.8 lens get assembled. Simply incredible how the whole things starts from parts to a finished product. Love this video.
@@gmxi188Have you contacted Sigma Service? I‘m sure that they would take care of that, as you still have warranty on the lens.
@@EndoplasmicReticulum7 I contacted Sigma Shanghai, and they replied that dust in the lens would not affect the imaging, and that it could not be returned or exchanged. It could only be repaired, but the process would take 3 weeks. The gap between the current Japanese companies and the past is too big! !
When you watch this video, your opinion about prices of lenses totally changes! Thanks for sharing this, so interesting to see how much high precision work needs to be done to create a lens
3 dollars, take it or leave it
Not really, I buy my lenses second hand anyway as they are too expensive new

I respect Japanese ppl!, i do love thier hard working, the love for everything they do what make them specialists on what they doing, such a wonderful nation, we are glad you are with us!❤
There's a reason so many michelin starred restaurants are in Japan. When these people set their minds to something the dedication and attention to detail is impressive to say the least.
also, sadly, the Japanese people need to work a little less hard and start making some babies or else there will be no more Japanese people in several more generations.
It is wonderful to see how each and every machine and individual working in the process of making the lenses are all so harmonious, and the delicate care that everyone puts into the work they do. It is no wonder why Japanese goods are of such high quality and standards, for it shows in the love and pride in creating a product. This one particular company makes me want to be an ambassador for them.

Most impresive is how this lady ( 12:30 ) paint letters by hand! Perfection!
I thought that too until I realise she is squirting ink into letter grooves already there. It looked too perfect to paint by hand.
Even so she must have very steady hands, I'm sure I couldn't do that. Y@@nivekov
It could be that they can perform these sophisticated handwork as they have a sensibility to manual operation.
The amount of care and labor you put into each of these lenses is phenomenal

The entire process is mind blowing, but the handwriting part (around 12:30) blew me away. I wasn't expecting an actual person doing such an incredible precise work.
The letters are imprinted in the metal, the worker uses runny paint to fill them in. Still an unexpected hand job.
Not precise just impressing for non technical people 😊
Filling the engravings with paint is easy as excessive product can be wiped away by hand more effectively as a machine could do it.

Wow, this is such a rare opportunity to see how a company actually makes their amazing lenses. I'm a huge fan of sigma lenses and I always admire their quality and performance. This video is so fascinating and informative - thank you for sharing it with us!
Brilliant video, I knew that automation was a huge part of lens creation, but I had no idea how much manual work took place, a truely great advertisment of the quality Sigma produce, i hope everyone involved is massively proud that the work on their products allows us to capture "life" in every aspect. Well done again guys, you really drive "made in Japan".
Sigma Art series are some of the best lenses out there :) Even 10 years old art series lens is still beating recent competitor lenses and easily handle 30+ megapixel sensors. After seeing the craftmanship that take place in this factory, it is even more impressive. thank you for this excellent and educational video!
Depends though. I have a somewhat older 35mm 1.4 lens from Sigma and it's considerably softer than recent 35mm lenses.
I have a bag full of art lenses. They are beautiful. Better than my Canons.
The new mounting systems changed the whole game, because lenses can now be mounted closer to the sensor, which means more sharpness and less corrections needed for the issues that arise from mounting the lens further from the sensor. So while lenses can be tack sharp even with the old mounting system, the fact is that the new mounting system is miles better for lens quality. This also means they don't have to craft lenses as high of quality as previously. So technically older lenses are crafted better, but they perform worse because of all the issues that arise from the mounting distance.
Quite nice to see how they make these lenses. Now I can way more apreciate the build quality of my zoom lenses having seen this.

Wow! I dont know what is more impressive, the lenses or the machinery to make the lenses. The most impressive, however is the person hand painting the numbers.
Absolutely amazing. Thanks for the film.

I especially liked the final QC check, where each lens is mounted on a camera and tested for focus sharpness, vignetting, and chromatic abberations before being boxed and shipped.
The feel of a high quality camera body and lens in your hand is part of the joy of photography, just as much as seeing the finished image emerge from post-processing.
Do you really think they test every lens before they leave the factory?
@@BigKelvParkNot these lenses. But more expensive ones are tested each one separately
Thank you. This has given me a greater appreciation for the work that goes into making a great lens and why they can be expensive. Great work to the film maker and especially to Sigma for showing the process.

i had no idea the letters were handwritten. that is some skill.
(As someone else mentioned already) The letters are already engraved. The manual work is only letting white paint flow into the recessed engraved letters. This still requires skill and good eye-hand coordination, but it isn't free-hand painting that you see here.
