I like watching the videos of my childhood because they remind me that it wasn't ALL bad. Not going to sugar coat it, my dad was a piece of work. He did have his moments, however; many of which were captured on video. Those are the memories I want to dwell on. He's gone now, and I stopped being angry about it 40 years ago. The videos helped with that a lot.
I'm happy for you. I sometimes harbor resentment about things that were done to me in my childhood that weren't right but I've had to learn over time to be at peace with it, forgive, appreciate my family while I have them, and hand it all over to Jesus. It's not perfect by any means but a better trajectory.
I sure appreciate you guys looking at this more fully. I’m really feeling motivated to get my siblings together for a weekend away somewhere and give each of the nine years that we were home movie stars a good sampling (‘54-65). That might even result in a productive pseudo therapy thing. I can hope anyway. Moving along, I remember the punch line to a joke but don’t recall the lead into it. Maybe Dusty or someone who reads comments can fill me/us in: Last words heard as someone dies, “Wait…what?” All the best.
In the late 50s my dad had an 8mm camera and made huge reels of boring family gatherings. A few years ago I had the collection transferred to thumb drives for my 3 siblings. Great gift, right? Not one of us has watched over a half hour of it yet (sorry dad). The grandmothers were smart and would run when they saw him coming with the durn thing. That yielded a lot of memories of my grandmother’s backsides in motion. Dusty, I share your videos with people in hopes they will use them as a tutorial on being more observant, (as I should be 😬). Actually, your host there is the best example of that. She knows how to keep you going and not get in the way. Rare. You both rock.
That is a great point about being observant. It's getting more difficult to pay attention to details because of technology doing everything for us. You have to slow down, take some deep breaths, and focus, which isn't easy to do anymore. We're all in a hurry going nowhere.
No I don’t mean innocence. I mean ignorance of the worries of life and the inevitability of death with bills to pay. But the innocence of childhood is also nice
Not always, but sometimes I want things to go back and be like the 80s again. It really was a great time to be alive. Today has its benefits but people are in general a lot more self centered and we're not as close with people around us - and there's zero good about that. Some bad things were going on back then too but there were a lot of great things about life growing up as a kid in the 80s. Lot less to worry about compared to now. I'm a giant proponent of letting your kids be little as long as possible. No need to rush them Into this 💩 show called the 21st century.
Old videos are always weird to watch later as an adult, but also funny. My great aunt used to HATE when anyone would video her. She'd get mad and that made it even funnier.😂
Well, you have to think about videos on non-public figures. I had a similar experience with my first tape recorder, it was a reel to reel, and recording conversations with my family. In the moment they were pleasant times, good conversation with humor, but when I replayed it later, it was a lot of dead air, not much going on, kind of sad. It took me some time to put it together that a lot of communication is non-verbal, eye rolls etc, so you couldn't include that in audio, there must be something like that going on, just hard to capture life perhaps.
That was so awesome. I read a comment on a stand up video, it said, "watch Dusty Slay's special". I just finished it and now I'm definitely a fan. It was cool seeing u as a kid! Who's pool was that in the video, where were yall?
@DustySlay ahh, thank you for answering. I started watching u yesterday, and now I'm taking it all in, lol.. it was cool hearing your Dad calling u, "Dusty Slay!".. Also, my 17 yo daughter's name is Dustie. How about that 😉
The best video we have is of my mother's 75th birthday party because we hired a stripper and we had about 30 or 40 people over and he sat her in a chair in the middle of the room and started his routine, my mother was just sitting there basically doing nothing for like 10 minutes and then somebody handed her her glasses and the shocked looked on her face and the party started.
I think it’s mostly because people of a certain age (*cough* boomers ) are always loudly talking during home videos. So you get like 10% memories and 90% whatever thoughts they had to be expressing back then.
“Everything sure is still” 🤣🤣

This was so relatable and funny

That's his wife. Mother of his kid(s?). They do work well together.

@@JohnMegaton2062 Spot on my friend. Best to you.
I like him even more now, beyond the laughs. They are a great team.
1988 Lol that was an action packed video i had a good time 😊 📹 📺
I think a good still photo captures a moment/memory better than a video of the same event
Please upload full episodes of the pod to youtube!
Pro-tip: All full podcasts are on Spotify. I think the full episodes are audio only
The ignorance of childhood is so fun to watch. Just focused on fun. Those are nice memoreis
You mean, "innocence"? 🤔
@@jamesgenovese8185 both, you're innocent because of your ignorance.

There is a guy called "Action Jackson" that retired from news radio station in Greenville, SC a couple months ago. Lol

@@DustySlay glad I could make ya laugh cause u make us laugh regularly! Big fan of you, Nateland pod and you need to come up to Canada asap!
I love that southern accent you had as a kid. I also had more of a southern accent as a kid.
Same here. Our home movies sounded like you were watching scenes from Sling Blade.

Nice summer time high and tights on y'all!
My dad loved that haircut

That was my dad’s house. My dad built a huge pool next to the cow pasture. I lived with my mom in the trailer park

Maybe home videos are a “Time Machine of Disappointment”?
Had a video camera back in the 90s it was as big as a loaf of bread
You think you're gonna see some zapruder shit but you're not

Ok maybe that’s just my parents. 😂
69th LIKE. Nice.
If 6 were a 9
Nice
I hate old home movies.
