We saw your show in another town and embarrassingly followed a group of people we thought were getting autographs. It was your family. You were so kind and took a picture with us anyway. Your show was great and you handle loud drunk people well!

I was at that show and it was frustrating. You explained everything very well, we paid for tickets to see you, not him, and he was ruining it. I think you handled things well and did a good job working it in where you could but drunk at 6pm is hard to deal with. I just wished the club stepped in earlier, especially since they had a giant sign before the show started that read "no heckling". But I doubt he read anything because he also ignored the no vaping sign as well. Either way we loved seeing you and will be by again if you're in the area.

Thanks for sharing this video. I haven't watched a lot of comedians deal with hecklers, but usually I see the comedian just ridicule the heckler with a biting insult and that's the end of it. I thought you handled this guy brilliantly. You didn't bluntly ridicule him but you leveraged his comments into splendid ad-hoc jokes. You have a sharp wit with natural comedic timing. So you handled this situation as well as any of the top comics in the world in my opinion. Your humble demeanor allows you to treat the audience, even the hecklers, with concern and respect all while making us laugh with you. AND you manage to be funny without being crude or using profanity. You are a top notch act my friend. I pray you continue to advance in this industry.

Comedians have this right to be frustrated at this behavior every single time. Even if it punches up, as audience members we’re not meant to talk to the performer during the show, including comedy shows. It interrupts the flow of the performer. It’s the same as if a singer was being constantly interrupted during a song. You know unless it’s crowd work we have to remember they are putting on a performance. And so we pay to watch that performance and anything we have to say about it is meant for a different setting.
This video is great content because Dusty is giving audience members an inside look at how he handled a heckler (because he WAS “man” enough to deal with it, even though it has nothing to do with having to “man” up, as someone suggested), even though it interrupted the flow of his routine, he showed us how resilient he is as a performer.
Comedians get the short end of the stick when it comes to audience members. Interrupting a show is ignorant at the jump. Doesn’t even matter what is said, it’s just plain ignorant.
I’m noticing more and more comedians come up with bits and routines with lessons on how to be an audience member. It makes for funny content but it’s pretty pitiful on our part.
I dunno really though. I see how response from the audience polishes the comedian. It just seems like comedians get treated with less respect as a performer than others. Maybe because comedians are using prose and it makes us as audience members feel more comfortable? Comfortable enough to talk back.
So I guess on the other hand, if the comedians didn’t have hecklers at all, they wouldn’t have those opportunities to see how resilient they are without preparation. But at the same time, we don’t need hecklers to prove if a comic is talented or not. That’s what their performance is for.
I wonder which is better: heckler or no heckler?
Heckler can show how talented the performer is, but the performer putting on a show also shows how talented the performer is.
I’m sorry for all of this, I guess when all is said and done, out of all kinds of performers, comedians get the least respect from audience members and have to deal with it and it was 💯 totally cool of Dusty to give us an inside look and I hope he does more inside looks.

I was that dude once at a show. The short end of the story is the comic on stage had to yell at me "shut the yyyy up" before it got through to me that my "pitching in" wasn't helpful. So I got up, turned around to the audience, mimicked that i'm zipping my mouth, then went and got another beer and kept my mouth shut for the rest of the show. Anyway, the thing you said "you gotta be aggressive aggressive" at these people is very perceptive! We're having a good time, ok?

Hey Dusty. This is pretty cool. I’ll start by saying I just found you last week thanks to the algorithms suggestions and I gotta say I love your style! Super funny, real quick, witty, all that. I’ve been into standup since a little kid, watching just for laughs and comedy now and club 54 since I was like 8. I’ll name drop and say Bill Hicks is my all time favorite. Here’s where I take a turn and put in my two cents. I’m not a standup comedian, not an entertainer or performer currently, but I’ve played in a couple bands and one thing I always found different about the bands I played in versus others, and people would remark that one thing that made us stand out, was the banter between songs. We played death metal. Both bands, but different brands of death metal. If you’ve ever been to a local show, or a big ticket show like Morbid Dangle, you know there’s always that band that’s gotta try and be super serious.. Instead of the classic grim voice “this next song is about chopping off your arms and legs and SHOVING THEM UP YER ASS TIL YOU DIE” kinda shit, it was more like “omg this microphone stinks. But so do I. God damn I smell like deli meat, is there any ladies speed stick out there” and that kind of crowd participation enhanced the show from time to time. Instead of stopping, checking our tuner in silence, then continuing with the next song, bringing some banter into the set was always a good way to try and relate with the crowd and interact. It opens the door for participation. I noticed over the years the audience acts like they’re there to witness a spectacle and quietly enjoy and then react after. I want it to be fun all the time, the whole time, but in a respectful way so as to not ruin it for the other more reserved, quiet audience members. So there’s the very front, people crushing other people, hollering obscenities etc, then there’s right behind them the mosh pit. Some times it was crazy. Seen a lot of blood, lots of injuries. Fuckin love that, then there’s the sides, dudes and gals that know the lyrics and wanna be close enough to get noticed and maybe the guitarist sees them and remembered “oh hey! Rachel! ‘Member that show in your landlords cousins basement with all those mods beatboxing Paul revere by the beastie boys and you climbed down the lattice aiding to escape the cops that came cuz that stupid dick Nolan brought fake coke and Nikki called the cops?” And then there’s the back. Always gotta call them out, they’re like the wooden spoon to the bottom of the pot after you let it sit a minute too long. They unstick stuff, but they’re not obligated to. It’s gonna cook no matter what. Anyways I love you and keep doing what you’re doing and if anyone actually read this to the end I’m so so sorry and I owe you and your family restitution to the sum of 187 cents, 420 Canadian nickels back, 69 69s, (top or bottom I don’t care let’s mix it up) and 138 misfit children. Haddalayerdown gobbless

Love the insight!! As a frequent audience member, the clips were very hard to watch. It's amazing to me how some people have zero awareness.

Hecklers make having a good time go to having a bad time really quick. I don’t know how you can stay focused on your set when that keeps happening. Great job! Hope to see you in Minneapolis area some day.

I came across your Trailer parks & tornadoes video last night and laughed so hard my sides hurt. Hit subscribe, texted a few friends the link then watched as many more as I could during a tornado watch from my trailer. Not in a park, but do have a ditch! Thank you for your insight. You are very funny and delightful.

Lot of people can’t handle their alcohol, or handle their mouth while drinking alcohol at least.
