I told my potheads that once they passed the initial MEPS drug test, I didn't care how much weed they smoked before they shipped. In Hindsight, that was a dumb thing to say. I lost a couple people because they didn't want to stop 🙂
Dusty, I peaked out in laughter and went straight to weeping when you said that. That’s only happened twice before. You’ve got yourself a fan here, bro. Can’t wait to see ya!
I joined the army February 7 2001 failing to heed George Carlin's warning in one of his comedy shows that the U S averages a major war every 10 years spent seven years in two tours in iraq Dusty God Bless you. as a country boy and a vet I relate to too many of your jokes and stories you found your calling keep up the good work .
I love George Carlin so much. Still listen to his advice today, and when I’m feeling particularly down or angry at the injustice of how life is I can sit down and listen to his words from all those years ago, and know that I’m not alone. Glad you’re here to tell the tale, that Iraq is war, man that was a travesty. So many guys coming back with ptsd and their limbs blown off, what is it George said. “War is rich men sending the poor and middle class men to fight and die so the rich guys can keep their land?” Something to that effect.
I was a recruiter for 4 years. You have told a 100% accurate story of how recruiting works. Thank you for putting it out there. Although I never told a new recruit to go ahead and smoke some weed one last time lol.
Hey brother, I was a Marine Infantryman for 11 years, was with the first group of Marines to go into Afghanistan in October of 2001, then went to the Invasion of Iraq in 2003, then back into Fallujah November of 2004, Ramadi in 2006, and a couple other deployments. You didn't miss a thing. I lost friends came home a different man, was wounded and after years, of being home, I am still making peace with things. But would rather it be me dealing with these things then someone that couldn't handle the memories. We ended up where we were supposed to be. That is awesome you made it to where you did
"The government teaching me to lie to the government to get into the government" is the most accurate description of military recruiting I've ever heard 🤣😂
This is an awesome story. Thank you for sharing it. I’m glad the Lord had other plans for you ❤ The reason every person shares where they were and what they thought or felt at 9-11, isn’t because everyone wants to make it about themselves. It’s the opposite. Recollecting that moment when we ALL had our lives changed forever, is important for everyone. It’s a universal commonality.
Hey Dusty, just came across this video by accident really. I had tried to enlist after HS, didn't make the requirements for whatever reason. Grades were good, hadn't had any law trouble prior to 2001. Then kinda went downhill for about 6 years, got married, spent the next 15 years in a bad marriage, moved around, and took a shot at joining just prior to my 40th birthday. I've owned a couple restaurants in that time and never succeeded. If I Had it to do over again I'm glad I didn't enlist. I am happy with my life not serving our country for all the BS stated in your story. Still having a good time.
I have zero doubts of the honesty. and accuracy of this story because I have lived my own version. Only a few things are different. The year, city, & trailer park. names of the characters, and the Airforce. 😂 Brought back some good old memories for me Dusty. good job..
on 911 I was in my Army housing on Fort Knox KY and my husband was at work as a Drill Sargent for Basic training training new recruits, when the planes hit the towers he was faced with telling these new soldiers that their Army career will start off at war and the mental and emotional turmoil was tremendous for these young people plus my husband knowing he had to get them ready to do what they were about have to do. Those men have reached out to him to thank him for everything he instilled in him, and they still stay in contact with him to this day. He retired from the Army after 20 years but still works for them as a civilian.
Dusty thank you , my husband and I laugh so hard watching you one night we couldn't go to sleep one of us would start laughing again and they it all started against got 4 hours sleep. So tired the next day but we had so much fun .
Glad I found this Dusty. Fantastic story. I look forward to seeing your stand up in person, but it was really nice to hear this real story and you tell it so well.
I am following you Dusty! I was in the Marines back in 74” and I was clean going in, coming out of it I wouldn’t want any testing to be done. Bales wash up on the S Carolina beaches every day and if you get one you also get a Shute load of buddies. I am very happy to see young people going into comedy and being good at it. You , in my opinion, are great at it.
I would like to thank that officer for arresting Dusty and putting him on his journey of making us laugh. Sometimes the journey might have looked confusing but now it's becoming a perfectly crafted novel..... We're having a good time. 😀
I think it’s true that sometimes something really small and stupid can be on one’s record for life! However, maybe the moral of the story is that sometimes that makes one more creative to do what one loves for a living! And your now a comedian making so many of us laugh! What a gift that is for us all!
Also, I had similar recruiter/physical experience, also got stopped by cop on interstate weekend before I came in, was f*cked up, I told him I was starting boot camp the next week, and he gave me grace. Never know, if he'd cracked down, I might be a great standup comic right now. Thanks. Keep pounding.
You are a natural public speaker. You have the whole package, great personality, good storytelling, fun accent, and a wholesome sense of humor. Somebody is looking out for you!
I have been watching your videos like crazy but I fell asleep to this one and I had the best nights sleep I’ve had in a long time. Thank you sir, I am not being facetious in the slightest bit.
I did the same thing, drunk af. I told him I was shipping out to Ft. Sill. Luckily he went to the same place. He called my dad to pick me up and let me go. I have had a good honest life. 12 years in the army. I thank God that cop did that for me. I'm afraid to imagine my life if he would have charged me. Thank you sir! And yes I went to Iraq, twice. It wasn't that fun, but I'm still glad I did it.
Man you coulda been a not so well known comedian doing even lesser known podcasts and dreaming about living it up in a trailer!! But noooo you had to go and join the army... 😉👍
All jokes aside this is a really raw story, and how many times can this same situation be echoed throughout America and realistically the entire world.. Really highlights how one (*even minor) mistake can REALLY affect your path in life, in your case it seems it was for the better but who knows for sure, Jimi Hendrix was in the Army and still pulled a pretty kick ass career😂🤔 Toughness makes you tougher I guess......
Love the story. One of my best friends from the Air Force was from Opelika. I made some coworkers listen to you on a long road trip the other day. If their laughter was any clue, I might have made you some new fans.
There's no situation a cop won't make worse. They don't, nor are they obligated to protect and serve. They are narcissistic, road pirates, and tyrants. That cop didn't ruin your life, but he messed up your life for a few years and hurt you financially. He didn't give a flying fxck. That cop probably never told you why he pulled you over. He did nothing but violate your rights, and I'm sure he enjoyed it because their ego's feed on it. I'm glad everything worked out in the long run for you brother. You are a great comedian. Much Love and Aloha from Honolulu Hawaii. 🤙🏼
I have kin folks in the Opelika, Cusseta, Lafayette, Lanette, Valley area! Gleaton family. I'm glad that I doscovered you! I love listening to your stories! Thank you!!!
Wow. What a story teller. Thanks for sharing. My world lost a Norm MacDonald thits year, but it gained a Dusty Slay. Just discovered you today as a comedian. Now also a very honest interesting story teller. You're pure genius.
The local police dept in my Alabama hometown tried to do the same to me 1989. Was waiting to go into marine corps when they got the itch to take me down with 5 different minor in consumption charges in a 5 week period. (I was old enough to die for my country but not drink, which is an amazing thought in itself) Only difference is i just got waivers, but yes sometimes I understand the hate for cops. They ruin many kids lives forever, like all my friends i grew up with. I was able to go in for 6 yrs and change my life for the better. Good story Dusty.
Enjoyed hearing your “almost Army” story, Dusty! I have an almost Army story, too. This was back in the early 1990’s. The local recruiters were pushing , “The Buddy System”, so my best friend and I decided to go for it. I won’t bore you and your fans with the story, but it was pretty bad and scary as 19 year old young women. Man, I’m glad it didn’t happen. We’re havin a good time!! Love your stories and your comedy, Dusty! Hope to see you live someday. I think you’ve got a show coming up at the Ponte Vedra Concert Hall in FL. That’s right where I am. I’ll try and catch it. Don’t have a buddy to go with me, so if I make it, I’ll be the single, blonde female sittin there with strangers, havin a good time! 😂 Appreciate you, man! 🙌🏼
Dusty, Just think, we could have served together! 🤣🤣 I left for the Army Sept. 4th, 2002. I signed up as a grunt and got a pretty big signing bonus as a result. I'll just say, prior to that we had similar hobbies! 🤣🤣 Can't wait to see you and meet you sometime.
I’m from phenix city Alabama. I was in the army as well and had many scared thinking I wasn’t gonna get in but I did i don’t regret it haha. It’s awesome knowing you are from opelika !!!!
Hey! Listenin' to your latest podcast (I'm late to the party), and I love what you're sayin' about wanting to be able to jump on and talk, without worrying about your hair or clothes and setup, and how you're not trying to be the Podcast King or the next TikTok star. Just jokes and making people laugh and everyone having a good time. You're doing terrific and whenever you get to hop in front of the mic again I'll be stoked to listen.
Dusty thanks for your honesty...many of us have similar stories so we know ...but to hear it out loud so that the truth rings free is great ...just glad you recovered so good ...god bless and keep up the comedy it suits you well...blessings coming your way I hope ...
Dusty’s first mistake was thinking you have to go to the army or college first before you start your own business. You can always skip both options and start one up now
We met in Salt Lake City, had you sign a poster and I purchased a hat from you. Great set that night and this was great story. You’re always entertaining.
Your Army tests and recruiter sound very familiar, lol. I did a hitch in the Yankee army in the 80s. Learned to work in the operating room and it was a cool job and a great experience and how I met my wife. When you grow up in a trailer in Alabama there aren't many choices.
I recently found Dusty and his comedy just keeps me rolling. BUT watching this floored me when he said Opelika. I went to Opelika High School, I worked at the antique mall next to western sizzlen, I went to SUSCC for all of a month. All of the jokes are 100x funnier now. What a small world.
Interesting story, Dusty. I'm sorry about that cop and I know you went through it for a while before you got to where you are now. I moved to Charleston in '05 with $1500 also, which could still get you an apt then, even if you needed that security deposit! lol 😭😂 I appreciate watching you start at the open mics, you were always a local favorite!
@@wedomusic9451 Dusty’s content is so fun! I just lose it to the bits about his mom stacking up Marlboro points to get him backpacks and stuff. The way he impersonates his mom smoking just has me rolling!! 😂
You got lucky! I was in the Corps at the time your speaking of and I was trying to get kicked out. I hated it, told them I lied to get in which was true my lying recruiters told me to lie. Well they just typed up some waivers and kept me in. I threatened other Marines with ass whoopins' until they had to get restraining orders on me, got caught drinking underage, went awol for over 32 hours whilst MP's were looking for me after jumping out of a 2nd story barracks room that was being guarded by two Marines inside. I landed and ran towards the bushes that lined the building, I ran inside the shadows till I got to a friend's barracks about a mile away and we went out in Japan and partied! Still didn't get kicked out. Some guys have all the luck. Ended up serving my whole term of four years.
That is wild and extremely similar to mine I graduated in the summer of 2001, immediately signed for the corp, trained all summer got pulled over high AF, cool ass cop though, grilled me and my buddy for what seemed like a couple hours, followed me home and called it a night, 2 days later 911 broke out and I was still able to with draw. Pretty summed up story.
Holy cow this is my story, cook and everything, I just followed through and gave them nine years 😳. All I got was the G.I. Bill, which was worth it, I guess 🤔. Awesome story sir.
You are 100% right. Unless you were affected by the event directly or were there as a survivor, a first responder, or even a medical professional who treated victims, nobody cares.
Dusty, you are fuckin hilarious.......huge fan....keep up the great work! I've stolen your "We're havin a Good Time" for any situations where things get awkward, I drop that line.....you are the man!
I had a similar experience being a 2000 graduate... I wanted to be an aircraft mechanic and join the AirForce reserves. I got a job with an airline in 2000 and a year later everything changed. I didn't go to the airforce, but stayed with the airline for 8 years.
Great story Dusty. Man, they really threw the book at you. I think the lesson to be learned is how hard someone will screw a kids life up to look like a big shot, honestly. Like yeah maybe you decided you didn’t want to go to the army after all, but that cop took that choice away from you. So a lot of that drinking and self destructive path you got on happened over something silly. Makes me wonder what would’ve happened to a kid that didn’t have the money to borrow to avoid a 6 month sentence and what would’ve happened to their life then. The trauma of going to jail, and what that does to somebody, trying to rebuild a life with limited job prospects because of a criminal record. That one night can and does ruin some peoples lives for good. That cop could’ve taken you home and given you a warning but he was more interested in bullying then he was a kids future. Anyways, you make me a lot of people laugh and I’m glad you’re around. Maybe everything really does happen for a reason.
Love your videos bro. Your voice and cadence is great bro im sure people like to talk to you just to hear you. This vid spoke volumes since you explained all this. The recruiter gave me the same advice and had me hammering mountain dew before i went to the processing center in Louisiana. Thanks for putting it out!
This was awesome. I was also arrested for minor consumption. I had 4 months til my 21st and I blew a .02. After working for 36 hours in 2 days. Took me to jail towed my car etc. my name is also dusty. Also bought a trailer for $1500 lived in it for 2 years and sold it for $4000.
My grandson was born on 9/11. My daughter went into labor as we were supposed to be going to my father’s funeral a few years ago. That’s my 9/11 2.0, not to take away from the travesty of Patriots day. But true beauty came from truly horrible circumstances and I can only be thankful. Btw, my father was a cook in the army…
My nephew, Sgt. Micheal Charles Taylor was in boot camp in the Army when 911 happened. It wasn't until 2 years later he was sent to Iraq. He was promoted to Sargent during his tour. Unfortunately, he was killed in action about 2 weeks before he was to come home. R.I.P. my hero. 💪
I don’t remember where I was during 9/11. I recall it but give all props to people directly to saving everyone involved. Yes to other thing “dislike” thing button or remarks make you better.
Dusty I love seeing you when you come to Dallas (I actually just took a picture with you and "our weight lose" about a month ago when you were here). This story just kept me very entertained during my lunch break. Much love.
My older brother went through a very similar thing around the same time. Joined the marines but couldn't stop partying, got arrested and didn't end up joining. Then 9/11... I think he was set to be one of the people who would have been tasked with disarming IEDs, though I don't think he knew that when he signed up.
Wow.... if I was an officer of the law and come across a young man not drunk but has been drinking and wants to defend our country??! Then takes him to jail!! What a doush bag!! He should be ashamed of himself....it takes heart to realize that's what you have to do. Dusty your a stand up guy!! Keep doing what you're doing Buddy!!
"The government, teaching me to lie to the government, to get into the government." 🤣 Very similar experience when I joined the Navy in 2001.
@Scott Sands The Navy, Marines and AirForce do another drug test when you ship, so it's important. The Army didn't when I was a recruiter. So I could care less. Dusty is a masterful story teller.
I could listen him read the weather report and somehow be entertained.
“I’m joining the Army hoping that I don’t get that job.”
😂🤣😁
I've done that job in the Air Force. Some enjoyed it more than others lol.
Dusty, I peaked out in laughter and went straight to weeping when you said that. That’s only happened twice before. You’ve got yourself a fan here, bro. Can’t wait to see ya!

We met in Salt Lake City, had you sign a poster and I purchased a hat from you. Great set that night and this was great story. You’re always entertaining.
I didn't expect this story to be this good
Your Army tests and recruiter sound very familiar, lol. I did a hitch in the Yankee army in the 80s. Learned to work in the operating room and it was a cool job and a great experience and how I met my wife. When you grow up in a trailer in Alabama there aren't many choices.
Fell asleep while watching this, best sleep in a while. Highly suggest this video
Hey brother...thanks for the story...I had a good time
I recently found Dusty and his comedy just keeps me rolling.
Great story. Dusty, you should write a sitcom and star in it.
Be wild if you ended up doing a comedy tour for the troops.
He probably will at some point!
@@wedomusic9451 Dusty’s content is so fun! I just lose it to the bits about his mom stacking up Marlboro points to get him backpacks and stuff. The way he impersonates his mom smoking just has me rolling!! 😂
@@DustySlay "Im one of yall"
that would be a great show!
@@DustySlay I think you contact the USO. Or maybe the Bob Hope foundation. You can do it. Those service members would love it.
Great story, Dusty! New fan here!
Just discovered you, the two week notice thing, great material👍👍👍😂 I’m still dying😂😂😂😂
If you have the right stuff, they overlook some of the minor bs lol!
As a drill sergeant in the army, I have always loved hearing the “why” behind recruits joining.
You are 100% right. Unless you were affected by the event directly or were there as a survivor, a first responder, or even a medical professional who treated victims, nobody cares.
TY for all your hard work and content contributions.
Thank you for your Almost Service!!!
I totally saw the same thing! I thought at the time “How could anyone crash into a building in broad daylight!”
Lolll fucking airborne cook, I needed that laugh man thanks.

Love your stories🎉
Loved it. You’re having a good time!
I am!
yeaaaaaaaaaaaaa Dusty....about that ASVAB score.....92G.....eek! I was in my first MOS training school in Ft Lee, VA 9/11/01....was a crazy time!
Thanks for sharing. ❤
I love your shit man, thanks for making me smile!!!!!
Its amazing how you remember these details.
Your story and mine are almost exactly identical except I got a duii and it was the navy. Same time frame and all. Agreed blessing in disguise.
@@DustySlay The Dusty's, that should be some kind of expansion football team
@@DustySlay Good Lord, how is Trailer Flippin' not a show yet????
@@DustySlay 😆
Wow. A coherent, sober story. Sub'd.
I was in Ft. Knox, got to see the gold👍
Great story Dusty!
Thank you for your service
R.I.P. my hero. 💪
Much love from Auburn ❤
As my recruiter told me (in regards to answering questions at MEPS):
"YES = Your Enlistment Stops
NO = Numerous Opportunities"
This is wild to hear. Thanks for sharing.
I don’t remember where I was during 9/11. I recall it but give all props to people directly to saving everyone involved. Yes to other thing “dislike” thing button or remarks make you better.
Great story, Dusty. Lesson here - Do NOT talk to the cops. Say nothing.
But then he would have gone to Iraq
I just subbed man I can’t wait to try out my first five people like you are hella inspiring
Dusty I love seeing you when you come to Dallas (I actually just took a picture with you and "our weight lose" about a month ago when you were here). This story just kept me very entertained during my lunch break. Much love.
Thx Dusty love your storytelling super funny ❤😊
Damn, that's a story. Well said.
My older brother went through a very similar thing around the same time. Joined the marines but couldn't stop partying, got arrested and didn't end up joining. Then 9/11... I think he was set to be one of the people who would have been tasked with disarming IEDs, though I don't think he knew that when he signed up.
Thank you.
Dusty you would do a great job with an audiobook, you have a great voice
An Airborne cook? Haha those recruiters really had fun with you
Thinking about joining army inspiring video.
Wow.... if I was an officer of the law and come across a young man not drunk but has been drinking and wants to defend our country??! Then takes him to jail!! What a doush bag!! He should be ashamed of himself....it takes heart to realize that's what you have to do. Dusty your a stand up guy!! Keep doing what you're doing Buddy!!
