  • PREMIUM wedge (£150) Vs BUDGET wedge (£50) - Any performance differences?
PGA Golf pro Rick Shiels reviews the new TAYLORMADE Milled Grind 3 (MG3) wedges which cost £150 each. After spending some time with the TAYLORMADE MG3 wedges Rick then compares them in performance to the very popular KIRKLAND SIGNATURE wedges from costco that cost £50 each or 3 wedges for £150

I have a Wilson triple duty sand wedge that's like 50 yrs old but was in perfect condition when I bought it, it's so perfect that everytime I want to try a vokey or get a callaway to match my lob and gap wedge, I just remember I use this club to show off how good my short game is around the green and in the bunker. The club and it's weight works so well for my swing style. I think different clubs just work better for different ppls type of play

I will say, that premium wedges just feels special.. I've bought some CHEAP wedges and been really really disappointed.. but I own the Kirkland wedges.. and they don't feel like cheap wedges, they do feel pretty premium. I changed to the Kirklands from some TaylorMade wedges (the TMs were just getting old and in need of replacement), and I am really happy with the Costco wedges. They did a good job on them.. they aren't just some cheap knock-offs, they're really good. If you really want the TOP of the TOP, or really want a specific grind (as Rick said here) the Costo option isn't going to fit, but I'm a mid-handicapper who likes good equipment, and for me, the Kirklands fit the bill perfectly

This fits with what I’ve found to be the case with my wedges. I had a nice mix of “better” wedges in my bag but when they started to really reach the end of their lifespan I opted to give the Bombtech wedges a go. You’re right that the swing “feel” was different, the weight distribution was not the same as the other wedges. I was really pleased with what I was getting from them. I doubt I’d be as happy with their driver (or the irons for that matter) but high cost doesn’t necessarily reflect a proportionate difference in quality with wedges.

Just goes to show that like a lot of things it's worth looking beyond the brand before you spend a lot of cash. Spend where it's going to make a difference but not where it's not necessary. I'm a fairly recent convert to golf and found I needed a 60 degree wedge. I got a new Ben Sayers for £30 and I'm really happy with it. It does what I want and when I improve my game and have the cash I might upgrade if only so I can get a matched set instead of the mixed bag I have at the moment. I really enjoy these videos and for a new golfer they are really informative. Keep them coming.

Great video as always. I'm trying to find a video you might have done that would explain when looking at wedges what bounce we should be considering for what circumstances in which we typically play. I generically think low bounce for the club we would use from short grass (although I have no particular idea what percent that would be). And higher bounce for shots from the rough and possibly the sand. But I am utterly confused by the options.

Great video Rick. This is very true when it comes to wedges. I like the mid range wedges that are not too expensive but still has great performance. Like you said, performance s still the same. I have a set of Cobra wedges, that are the same as my clubs, and they work just as well as any Cleveland or Vokey wedges, I even get a little more forgiveness, since they are cavity back wedges.

How about the grips for the Kirkland set? Were they of quality and seem as though they would last? Thanks Rick for ALL your amazing content and making golf videos fun, interesting, and motivational!

I actually spoke to a Callaway Master Fitter/ Regional Rep last week about wedges and he explained the differences between the patents of all the major brands and such and mentioned that there was a 6% or less variance between spin rates and overall performance of the wedge. The major difference is being fitted for them because the sweet spot on the wedge changes based on design patents. When I jokingly asked about Kirkland wedges he just looked at me and said, "6 percent". Great video as always.

Rick, your chipping is getting better everyday, you did great with both kinds of wedges today, now bring that to the next challenge with the boys and we won’t hear any polls of fun with those shots. I agree about the wedges, I can’t afford the high price wedges so it’s good to know that the lower price ones work just as well. Nice video Rick as always

I don't often hit my 60 degree wedge 180 yards ... but when I do, it's from a greenside bunker.
I have the Kirkland signature wedges. I really love them. My MacDaddy wedges are living in the garage.

That was quite informative. If I win the "ANY SET OF IRONS" prize you offered, I'm not asking for a Kirkland set but I've got my eyes on some mid range options that would just look pretty in the bag...and probably perform just as well as the top rated sets.

I bought the Kirkland wedge set off the back of your test and can say anything other than great things about them. I changed the grips immediately as I felt the grips were a little thin and because I’m used to playing the Golf Pride Tour Wrap 2. £21 for new grips and I wouldn’t change them for any other wedge set! Brilliant bargain!

  • @jessepippin9698

Great video guys. I currently have a set of the K-sig wedges in the bag, and I'm super happy with them. Out of all the clubs in my bag, they will probably stay the longest. My other clubs are a set of 521c Tour Edge irons, 4 thru P, a Cleveland Launcher from the early 2000s that I like, but I'm not very good with yet. A pair of department brand woods, 3 and 5, which are the two remaining "legacy" clubs from my original bargain swap buy when I got into golf. I do well with with those, but they are on deck for replacement. My putter is a $20 dollar buy from a second had store, a Dogleg Right "Hog" which i had resized and gripped and actually preforms wonderfully. All in all, my clubs cost around $780 US. If you are a bargain golfer like me, i think the K-sig wedges are perfect addition for your bag.
