I have a friend whose Nethroi deck does pretty much exactly this - Magic has a lot of 0/0 creatures whose power and toughness is set by +1/+1 counters when they're placed on the battlefield.
Oh, you also missed the funniest, newest deck type of Nethroi. The Ring Wraith Nethroi. Toss as much of your deck into the graveyard as possible and resurrect 3-5 of your 9 Ring Wraiths at once to make a one tap commander with an equally one tap board state.
I used to run Sky Scourge in my Nethroi deck, it totally changes the build because it makes a lot of midrange stuff viable for 'fun games', or just lets you add Drivnod to the pile with all your aristocrat pieces.
Death's shadow (if you have 14 or more life in a game where you start at 40) and scourge of the skyclaves (if the player with the highest life total has more than 20 life) often have negative power. Which allows you to reanimate creatures with more than 10 total power cause math is great like that sometimes.
Death's Shadow doesn't work with this, Scourge does. Scourge has star/star power and toughness, so it checks its characteristic defining ability in all zones. Death's Shadow only checks its ability in play, so in all other zones it is a 13/13, making it absolute garbage in a Nethroi deck... but pretty good in, say, a Varolz deck....
I play him as the commander for a three-color Reanimator Hydra deck that wants to turn as many 0/0 hydras to the battlefield just so they can die for blood artist effects or for the hidden commander, polukranos the reborn's wurm coil side. It's a very fun deck
As a proud Illuna discount Cacade deck enjoyer, can agree. We do not build wide, we build tall. Until we randomly gacha a wincon and beat everyone's face in at once. When an Apex mutates, it better be your goddamn win con, because lord help you if you get a second turn.
One of the bucket list decks I want to build is a nethroi combo deck where you put a bunch of hydras + blood artist effects in the yard and then reanimate 20 0/0s that die immediately and drain the whole table out
I had a deck list all tee'd up for a Nethroi, Apex of Walls deck, with self mill, a ton of 0 power walls, and specific creatures to tutor up other creatures/enchantments that make walls into monsters. Never ended up making it, but now that you've reminded me I think I just might.
I haven't tried nethroi modular, but I made a really good Hamza one. One turn you have a few teeny robots, and the next you're drawing 3 cards for each one you play and they're all FREE. Then you play 5 counter doublers, a sac outlet, and a walking ballista and watch the world burn
My Nethroi deck is a self-mill deck with a bunch of mutate creatures to apply keywords and even more 0/0s that come in with counters on them like "Phantom Nishoba", "Heroes' Bane", and "Embodiment of Agonies". Additional cards like "Phytohydra" and "Managorger Hydra" gives other useful abilities. Sadly it folds pretty hard to repeated graveyard exile so gotta fade all those late game Bogs.
My wife's Nethroi has a ton of creatures that are 0/0 but come back with counters on them. Things like Polukranos, Unchained and Noosegraf Mob. Makes for a late game board state even with multiple board wipes and interaction from others. One of my favorites flavor-wise
Ahhh my favorite causal deck. I use it as a reainamator deck using as many Godzilla cards as possible (that includes Biollante alt art) Best thing is grabbing all my zero power players (Kolarian Hydra, Golgari Troll, lord of extinction, tree of perdition, Ghave, and a couple others) while also using low power creatures with great ETB’s. And because I love it so much, I threw in Filth and an Urborg, Tomb of Yahgmoth, just in case I’m playing someone who doesn’t have black.
I'm honestly trying to slap together a Nic Fit list for Legacy *just* to play the Biollante version in that format, I just can't decide between Junk (so I can also play Mothra) or BUG (for Attractions). Might be a 4-color special so I can do both, not gonna lie.
Thank you so much for the inspiration. Been working on a decklist for this ever since this first came out three months ago, finally got the order submitted today. And just to clarify, I did focus the deck around the modular nethroi concept mixing the archetypes of mass reanimation and hardened scales to produce a glorious, "oh no I forgot to keep up counterspell mana, where'd that army of undead eldritch horrors come from?" Moment at the table that I am excited to get to resolve exactly once before becoming public enemy #1 across the lands. Hope to do you proud with the degeneracy!
Dying at "Poop Knife Lenny" 😂😂 Also, Nethroi turns Buried Alive into a 1 card win condition if you cast it and find Protean Hulk, Viscera Seer, Blood Artist, and Restoration Angel, then Mutate Nethroi to return and use the Hulk line to find Karmic Guide returning Hulk to play, then use the line again to find Reveillark and place the ETB on the stack to sacrifice Karmic Guide and Restoration Angel to the Seer, thus returning both of them to play with the trigger and then blinking the Reveillark with the Restoration Angel ETB and returning Hulk with the Karmic Guide ETB and then present a loop of sacrificing the creatures with their own triggers on the stack with Blood Artist in play. So that's kind of neat :3
Didn't even mention the most sus thing with Nethroi. Roiling Horror and Scourge of the Skyclaves. These have the lovely distinction of usually having greatly negative power. And when adding up to a total these negatives indeed subtract, giving you a free disgusting bonus to the power you can reanimate.
Made a Nethroi 0-power tribal deck when Ikoria released. The look on people's faces was hilarious when I just created a huge pile of large butts before uttering the phrase "I cast Doran, the Siege Tower".
Currently building Nethroi in arena entirely with the purpose of reanimating one of the fucked up Abzan/Golgari/Selesnya hobbit combos that we keep getting more of and I’m not gonna lie it’s really funny
So happy to see this. I've been brewing a Modular Nethroi deck for a while. It is a weird sort of balancing act but if I can pull it off it will be SO satisfying.
I took that modular sentence as a goddamn challenge and wound up making an overly complicated kci walking ballista one shot deck. So many funky steps you gotta finish all your tasks before you can blow someone out the airlock but if you want to see a bunch of 10/10's reanimated at the same time modular is definitely where you want to be since you can reanimate corpsejack menace, winding constrictor, kami of whispering hope, and benevolent hydra in one mutate and still bring back all 18 modular creatures (we dont include the sunburst one) and still have 2 power of reanimate left over just to spite people.
I'm amazed you didn't drag Scourge of the Skyclaves alongside Nethroi. Shits insane, like that's an extra 20 power of elves you can reanimate Or a second copy of craterhoof behemoth and 15 power worth of elves
If you are playing a soul sisters style Nethroi deck, Scourge of the Skyclaves can actually go even further beyond. If you have 60 life, which is very easy in these kinda decks, its p/t is -40/-40. Nethroi is also a sleeper pick as a mass reanimator in the 99 of Doran, the Siege Tower decks since those decks tend to play a critical mass of 0 power, high toughness creatures
I'm utterly shocked nobody is talking about the absolute crime synergy that is Scourge of the Skyclaves. Don't know how it works? You're going to need some bleach after this one. Scourge of the Skyclaves has P/T equal to (20 - h), where h is the highest life total among players. It's a */*, meaning this power and toughness is calculated in all zones. Because of this, Scourge of the Skyclaves is a -20/-20 at the start of an EDH game. Cast Entomb, Unmarked Grave, or Buried Alive and slap Scourge into the graveyard. When reanimating with Nethroi, the -20 counts towards the total power, meaning Nethroi reanimates according to (p - 20 = 10), where p is the amount of power you reanimate. In layman's terms, Nethroi now reanimates for THIRTY POWER.
I have a Nethroi deck, it's aristocrats. I play a mini game of 'get 10 power worth of creatures in the graveyard, reanimate them, see if I win instantly' - I do not dump any specific creatures in there, it's just whatever flops in with dredge. My playgroup is surprisingly OK with it because we keep finding different interactions with some weird cards and it never wins the same way twice. I only take 20 minute turns about 10% of the time!

As someone who has been trying to build nethroi decks for a while, your suggestion for a modular nethroi deck isn't to far off from what i consider the best strategy for nethroi, which is creatures who lie about their power and toughness, like fertilid, bane of progress, and kalonian hydra.
Add to that a LOT of +1/+1 counter synergy, especially since Selesnya is the colour that gets a ton of those, and it's not like those decks don't mind running a few aristocrats anyways.
I built a "mudular" Nethroi deck (no modular creatures, but a bunch of 0/0's that enter with counters). It's especially deadly when you mutate upon your basic tramply 4/4, and oops it's now a 9/9 trample deathtouch with 20 new friends
Any time you see White, Green, and Black together on a card that has the word "graveyard" in the rules text, you know shenanigans are going to ensue and someone is gonna have a bad time.
My two favorite kinds of creatures to put in the graveyard here. 0/0's that enter with many counters, or the */*'s that are power and toughness equal to your life total or hand size.
I recently had a bunch of fun playing Drivnod modular. It's a lovely mechanic I wish hadn't been pushed into boros when it got revisited, but still oozes charm, regardless. (Also, as always, requesting Urtet!)

Friend of mine has a Nethroi deck that relies on dumping a shit ton of 0/0 creatures into the graveyard so that when they all get reanimated they immediately die and trigger monumental damage with "when a creature dies deal damage" effects
Mutate is my favorite playstyle in the game. It astonishes me how many player can't deal with 1 monster. My stack record is gain life inflict damage 2 times, rip a card from opponent's hand, they sacrifice a creature of their choice, I kill a creature of my choice, get a land on mutate, and draw a card on mutate.
This commander is so underrated. He absolutely wrecks in a value based deck. Draw, ramp, removal, sac outlets, combo pieces all brought back at once. Landfall triggers go hard. I had to stop playing him because I ground out wins so much.
I'm trying to brew up some Nethroi Hydras over here. And one mutated Brisela, because seeing Nethroi in a pile of two face down angels is a weird sight.
i have a nethroi deck, it is 1/3 infect, 1/3 mutation and 1/3 aristocrats it is jankie, it is clunky, but most of all, it is fun as hell Reanimating every single infect card from the grave, mutatuing so they are now flying and hitting constanstly 4 or 5 flying infect. Freaking love it man
A deck I'm brewing is using Nethroi as the Lieutenant for the face commander, Karador, Ghost Chieftain. I'll get multiple mutates in a game because when I play Karador I make WW 1 look like a game of Red Rover.
Dude I have a Nethroi deck that's using all the Modular stuff and it's intense. Most games I win if I get to play the commander once, man's on another level

I have a Nethroi deck that's perhaps a little unorthodox. Big Mill Nethroi. Mill most of my deck into my graveyard, using Nethroi not as a reanimation strategy but as a stalling tactic, putting creatures I can sacrifice for value as well as creatures with Regrowth effects on them to get the true prize: Eerie Ultimatum, Living Death, or Rise of the Dark Realms. Oh, and I have Odric Lunarch Marshal, Vorinclex, and Fynn in there along with a bunch of other big beaters. I'm sure Mald would absolutely HATE my deck lmao
it's another graveyard deck commander option. Shut down the graveyard, he suddenly doesn't do anything. You can't say that about commander options that touch blue.
Finally one of my commanders made it to the front of the line. My Nethroi deck focuses on low power creatures with powerful etb's. Ravenous chupacabra, hornet queen, bane of progress etc. Tortured existence is also a fun card in this deck especially if you use it to dump a golgari grave troll into the hard every activation
My first thought was archon of the wild rose and Gylwain with a bunch of normally 0/2 or 0/1 creatures. You could throw in ellivere or doomwake giant if you wanna do big damage/clear the field. I wish I knew about Nethroi while I was playing my Abzan aura deck.
I gotta comment because this is my main deck I play. It's tokens. Squirrel tokens specifically. Life gain when a creature enters and drain my opponents when I gain life. I'm bringing back the dudes that etb four squirrels when they enter and it is a magical land of dead rodents and drain.
One exception? My nethroi deck is so much fun and wins frequently. Theres a ton of cards that are 0/0 but enter with +1/+1 counters equal to things like number of lands, number of creatures on battlefields, in graveyard, etc. My deck is built as high speed self-mill so I only need to play nethroi a single time to win. Realistically, its only issue is giving them haste if youre in a high board wipe group.
My roomate has a Nethroi and uh Its a self mill deck and has like thirty 0 power creatures so they all come back with etb effects and the table is consistently bent over. Its fun to play against cause its like a race to if we either: A) get enough turns in to set up our own engines to withstand the gross that is coming, or B) die
In the 99, Nethroi is an excellent include for a walls deck, like Doran, the Siege Tower.

Built an entirely cat themed historic deck around Nethroi and I still fucking love playing it.

I built a "mudular" Nethroi deck (no modular creatures, but a bunch of 0/0's that enter with counters).
It's especially deadly when you mutate upon your basic tramply 4/4, and oops it's now a 9/9 trample deathtouch with 20 new friends
Any time you see White, Green, and Black together on a card that has the word "graveyard" in the rules text, you know shenanigans are going to ensue and someone is gonna have a bad time.

My two favorite kinds of creatures to put in the graveyard here. 0/0's that enter with many counters, or the */*'s that are power and toughness equal to your life total or hand size.

Now this is where my Doran the siege tower treefolk toughness works really well. You wouldn’t think it but it is really good.

Friend of mine has a Nethroi deck that relies on dumping a shit ton of 0/0 creatures into the graveyard so that when they all get reanimated they immediately die and trigger monumental damage with "when a creature dies deal damage" effects

Mutate is my favorite playstyle in the game. It astonishes me how many player can't deal with 1 monster. My stack record is gain life inflict damage 2 times, rip a card from opponent's hand, they sacrifice a creature of their choice, I kill a creature of my choice, get a land on mutate, and draw a card on mutate.
Wall players be tossing their whole library into the graveyard when they run this.
This commander is so underrated. He absolutely wrecks in a value based deck. Draw, ramp, removal, sac outlets, combo pieces all brought back at once. Landfall triggers go hard. I had to stop playing him because I ground out wins so much.
I'm trying to brew up some Nethroi Hydras over here. And one mutated Brisela, because seeing Nethroi in a pile of two face down angels is a weird sight.

i have a nethroi deck, it is 1/3 infect, 1/3 mutation and 1/3 aristocrats
it is jankie, it is clunky, but most of all, it is fun as hell
Reanimating every single infect card from the grave, mutatuing so they are now flying and hitting constanstly 4 or 5 flying infect. Freaking love it man

A deck I'm brewing is using Nethroi as the Lieutenant for the face commander, Karador, Ghost Chieftain. I'll get multiple mutates in a game because when I play Karador I make WW 1 look like a game of Red Rover.

I have a Nethroi deck that's perhaps a little unorthodox.
Big Mill Nethroi.
Mill most of my deck into my graveyard, using Nethroi not as a reanimation strategy but as a stalling tactic, putting creatures I can sacrifice for value as well as creatures with Regrowth effects on them to get the true prize: Eerie Ultimatum, Living Death, or Rise of the Dark Realms.
Oh, and I have Odric Lunarch Marshal, Vorinclex, and Fynn in there along with a bunch of other big beaters.

it's another graveyard deck commander option. Shut down the graveyard, he suddenly doesn't do anything. You can't say that about commander options that touch blue.
Finally one of my commanders made it to the front of the line. My Nethroi deck focuses on low power creatures with powerful etb's. Ravenous chupacabra, hornet queen, bane of progress etc. Tortured existence is also a fun card in this deck especially if you use it to dump a golgari grave troll into the hard every activation
My first thought was archon of the wild rose and Gylwain with a bunch of normally 0/2 or 0/1 creatures. You could throw in ellivere or doomwake giant if you wanna do big damage/clear the field. I wish I knew about Nethroi while I was playing my Abzan aura deck.
A thought. Make this psycho a Sliver commander and go 'Assuming Direct Control' every recast.
I gotta comment because this is my main deck I play. It's tokens. Squirrel tokens specifically. Life gain when a creature enters and drain my opponents when I gain life. I'm bringing back the dudes that etb four squirrels when they enter and it is a magical land of dead rodents and drain.
One exception? My nethroi deck is so much fun and wins frequently. Theres a ton of cards that are 0/0 but enter with +1/+1 counters equal to things like number of lands, number of creatures on battlefields, in graveyard, etc. My deck is built as high speed self-mill so I only need to play nethroi a single time to win. Realistically, its only issue is giving them haste if youre in a high board wipe group.

Its a self mill deck and has like thirty 0 power creatures so they all come back with etb effects and the table is consistently bent over. Its fun to play against cause its like a race to if we either:
A) get enough turns in to set up our own engines to withstand the gross that is coming, or
B) die
