Years ago one of my buddies built a mono red Krenko goblin deck and I built a mono white Tivadar anti-goblin deck. They were both a blast to play with/against and every time I pulled Tivadar out with a new player at the table they were always super confused. 😂
Yeah, I really had to cleanse myself of buidling decks optimally when I switched from competitive formats to commander. I kept building decks that were unfun to play against.
I love to run creatures with vigilance AND tap abilities alongside Masako. I can attack, tap for an ability and still block. It basically lets my creatures pull triple duty.
I love this video. Please do this for the other colors! As someone obsessed with Magic and thinks about it daily (lol), this video helped me to find commanders I may or not be interested in without doing so much online research. Thank you!
You also have pariah's shield, which is equipment (with lots of ways to tutor it up). The problem I think is protecting it, since boardwipe still kills it, etc.
Ooh, thanks for the good find. I honestly didn't think you could reduce the X cost Kentaro applies, but I guess it's just an alternate casting cost added to all samurai. Sigh, I guess now I'll have to brew a Kentaro deck :D.
Masako is an awesome commander, i recently built her as a vehicle deck with a token subtheme. She enables being agressive with overstated attacking vehicles and for three mana lets you keep your guard up. Crewing a vehicle to block and blocking with the guys who crewed it feels awesome.
Eight-and-a-Half-Tails is a very underrated commander imo. Some of the applications are more obvious than others, like playing into niche weird color hate cards, but he can also just outright command a very solid mono-white control/stax deck that uses him to protect key pieces from removal.
Really looking forward to your mono green and red videos. They are both my favourite mono colours. But seeing the mono white deck was just as interesting! I also have a bias for Kamigawa, since they were my first Magic sets as a kid. :) I am still looking for a cool Kamigawa legendary who is actually a solid commander.
Same! I had lots of Kamigawa cards growing up. In the Mono Blue video that I uploaded yesterday there is at least one Kamigawa card that looks really strong :)
My favorite thing I've done in magic besides helm of the hosting Nichol Bolas or Gideon is having darien and soul sisters out and infinitely blasting myself with aetherflux
That last commander is so obscure, I almost thought it was made up. The original time spiral was the first set that came out when I was new to the game, so I thought I knew everything that was in it. This had to have near literally seen no play because I have never seen it before.
A word of warning for Teshar: My friend has this deck and there are multiple times when I had to point out he won the game while he was going through the motions completely unaware. Teshar is a VERY good commander when built properly, but you could also build him as a meme. Remember: Historic spells!
For mono green I recommend trying Arwen (weaver of hope), because she may not be completely unique, but is the only card which can actually make something eneter the battlefield with an uncapped amount of counters (not from a trigger), not to mention she has some really cool synergies, with pump spells, and cards like greater good.
I know, haha. But as I am not totally opposed to UB I love the solution of Universes Within. You get to play a mechanically interesting card without putting a street fighter card in your deck. Which one was your favorite from the list?
I'd love to see you do a list like this for other colours was super interesting to watch. White is my least favourite of the colour pie, but i saw a few in here that made me want to try running it some more.
Loved seeing Lin amd Mageta in the list, when i got those cards they felt sucky (there weren't any real good rebel cards yet) but now with commander I've fished them out and enjoying making commander decks for them ❤
Radiant, Archangel could actually be a really unique voltron commander. You can build the deck to make a ton of flying tokens like spirits, birds, angels, something white has plenty of, and then you have a big chunk of flying commander damage to send around. White is also good at protection, so that can help to keep the commander alive, and if that fails, the deck could still win by going wide with all the flying tokens
Darien is a really cool commander with a big asterisk of "if he doesn't have cards that give life on creature wtb" because if he does you become functionally unkillable and it kinda breaks the table
I saw a Game from Playing with Power MTG with Eight and a half Tails as Commander. Nobody cared about Eight making their lands white. Everybody gangsta until he dropped an Ugin and -0 him
I quite literally gasped when I read Masako’s ability. I have a Kitt Kanto, Mayhem Diva deck that she would slot so well into. It’s a deck that only attacks when it comes down to 1v1 so opponents try to get in chip damage when they can. This card lets me use the tapped creatures to continue to chump block while I make more tokens
I looked it up and you are correct! Again, I don't hate UB, I just don't like the idea of putting characters from other franchises in my deck. Universes Within is a great workaround imho :)
If I'm reading Opal Eyes correctly, its redirection effect doesn't target. If so, that makes it possible to absorb a hit from a suited up voltron commander with hexproof/shroud, for example.
You could also absorb all damage from a spell that damages multiple targets. Or blasts from OP sources like aetherflux. I ran him as a stax commander for a while and it was really nice to give him indestructible and a way to untap him at instant speed to tank all damage. The damage doesn't even have to be directed at you, you could play him as a politics commander
I know the UB stuff isn't for everyone, but for white specifically I think there's a massive sleeper commander that absolutely nobody knows about: Astrid Peth. She's an absolute blast to play at multiple power levels as a commander-facing deck with lots of combat aggression, redundant options to make that One Big Dude to murder everyone, all of white's resiliency to threats and removal, all backed up with combo potential if you so desire. Lots of people expect white tokens; nobody expects white *artifact* tokens with a heavy self-sacrifice subtheme. Celestine, the Living Saint is also an extremely fun option, who honestly doesn't even feel like a UB card. Her name doesn't sound out-of-universe at all, and her mechanics feel nicely set-agnostic. You basically caught most of the other fun ones, although I think Delney is criminally underplayed. Especially once you read him the third time and realize he doesn't actually need an ETB trigger, he works on anything... including on-attack or leaves-the-battlefield triggers. I have a mono-white aristocrats deck I'm trying out with him that performed extremely well in my limited play so far.
@@theseppfuchs I appreciate your style, it’s clear and concise without being overly dry. That and the card choices were novel and interesting, for a game with 40,000+ cards we certainly seem to only see the same handful talked about haha. Looking forward to the mono blue!
I used Balan as my Voltron commander until like last year when I finally switched it to Galea, Kindler of Hope. The last build of her I did had a focus on getting bloodthirsty blade and assault suit on her and passing her around the table slicer style. Funny enough, if you have the swords of or a lot of different equipment on her you still get the benefits, not the person who has Balan
@@theseppfuchs Galea is my main character. I love how she leans into a play style of setting up with cost reducers, then use stuff like scroll rack to put the equipment on top of your library all at once and get them onto her out of nowhere. It's just a beautifully elegant deck that is part Voltron, part combo deck. The better colors gives you access to urza lord high artificer and Silvan library. The 4d math you have to use to pilot that deck makes it my favorite.

@@CandelaNudel Exactly, that's where I saw it at first, then I added whispersilk cloack for protection ahah I think I still have the box from that deck.
MTG circa 2004: "Omg how cute! It even has cat as a creature type!" MTG circa 2024: "Cat is a very interesting creature type, as in it is very tribal focussed." Times have changed. 😂
priest of blessed graf is cool , adeline is always great 🙂 and I play clever concealment and flare of fortitude as protection and a "meek" theme for draw (welcoming vampire, ...)
Unfortunately there is only ~25 colourless commanders which isn't really enough to warrant a video. But I encourage you to take a look yourself :). There are some really cool gems intl there.
I stopped playing magic in 2004 (first Kamigawa blog) and took a 17 year abstinence from magic. To have to deal with Kamigawa after one of the best blogs (mirodin) was horrible. I can just remember the two red samurai brothers and the horrible keyword (bushido). ... to sum it all up.. i had not a good time with kamigawa. ._.
Yeah, that is the sentiment a lot of people seem to have. I agree that the set is very mopy in comparrison to the utter brokenness of Mirodin, but it feels like they tried to come up with unique cards at least - even though it didn't work out.
Everybody always asks where Nadaar is, but never how he is :(. To answer the question earnestly. I dislike venturing into the dungeon as a mechanic. Not to take anything from your enjoyment:).
@@theseppfuchs the commander is a 3/3 vigilant for 3, has an anthem stapled on to him, has both an attack and an ETB trigger, and relevant types (dragon and knight). He was my favorite commander for almost two years. Venture is a great mechanic as it makes every match feel different instead of just "I make tokens, I storm off, Im going Voltron, and I'm an artifact deck". You even mentioned archers, goblin hate, and tutoring for bad cards in a simple combo list (Sivvy) but no venture? If it is bc it feels complicated (which, it isn't), I'll never understand why people who don't like complicated things get into reading-heavy hobbies like TTRPGS and Magic the Gathering (and no, I am not gatekeeping, I am begging for the things I love to not get ignored just for being different).
Thank you! Yeah, EDHRec is such a great tool, but taken at face value it homogenizes decks a little too much in my opinion. I already started looking at two colour combinations, but first I will work through the mono coloured Commanders.
Are you for real? The second card you put on our faces is universes beyond street fighter E Honda lol. That means your whole opening statement is basically hypocrite.
You seem to think I have a stronger opinion about UB, than I actually do. I woudn't put Honda in my deck, but I would put Baldin in my deck. Opinions can be more than black and white. But if you think that makes me a hypocrite - you do you :)
One of the funniest things I’ve seen was a Sensei Golden-Tail deck that used the ability to give Bushido to Gideons and other noncreature permanents.
That is kinda hilarious. Reminds me of the Faceless Haven + Book of Exalted Deeds combo.
Some gems here! Thank you! I look forward to the other colours, and I hope you do colour combination commanders too!

@@theseppfuchs My pleasure! The directions people take with their builds can really spice up a game and, especially in a game like a Magic, make all the difference!
@@CandelaNudel Exactly, that's where I saw it at first, then I added whispersilk cloack for protection ahah I think I still have the box from that deck.
MTG circa 2004: "Omg how cute! It even has cat as a creature type!"
MTG circa 2024: "Cat is a very interesting creature type, as in it is very tribal focussed."
Times have changed. 😂
It's raining cats and dogs nowadays :D
1:30 got called out for 2nd screening 😅
That's how I consume content like this all the time :D
Baldin is a great token deck 😁 you just play it as a mooshaker cavalry equivalent if you can give it haste
If you don't mind me asking: what kind of token makers do you use in that deck?
@@theseppfuchs I use many based on devotion, some spirit some Elspeth, ... Also the x spells that make token at instant speed can be nice
priest of blessed graf is cool , adeline is always great 🙂 and I play clever concealment and flare of fortitude as protection and a "meek" theme for draw (welcoming vampire, ...)
@@jean-baptistedelabroise5391 Priest is a dope card I didn't know existed :)
>doesnt like UB
>look inside
>UB
Technically Universes Within, but I get it.
Do a colorless version next
Unfortunately there is only ~25 colourless commanders which isn't really enough to warrant a video. But I encourage you to take a look yourself :). There are some really cool gems intl there.
Are you from Malta?
Nope :)
@theseppfuchs i doubted it, but still wanted to be sure. Also, alot of these creatures are great(or am already in) my Raff capashen legend deck.
My favorite commander is white but you don't have her on the list
Adaline, Resplendent Cathar
Always happy when people share their favorite ones
Eight and a half tails has a favorable interaction with ugin the spirit dragon
Bye Bye Lands :D
I stopped playing magic in 2004 (first Kamigawa blog) and took a 17 year abstinence from magic.
To have to deal with Kamigawa after one of the best blogs (mirodin) was horrible.
I can just remember the two red samurai brothers and the horrible keyword (bushido).
... to sum it all up.. i had not a good time with kamigawa. ._.
Yeah, that is the sentiment a lot of people seem to have. I agree that the set is very mopy in comparrison to the utter brokenness of Mirodin, but it feels like they tried to come up with unique cards at least - even though it didn't work out.
crovax with axis of mortality
Others have also suggested "Near-Death Experience" if alternate win-cons are something your playgroup enjoys!
You didn’t look at 2000+ legendary creatures
Or did I 🤔...?
Cho-Manno and Pariah/Pariah’s Shield?
Love it. Becoming an immovable object in commander :D
DO BLACK NEXT🙏
I will be going through the colours in WUBRG order :). Blue is almost done, so black will come after that.
Mono white?? I clicked on the wrong video
Other colours will follow :)
Where is Nadaar selfless paladin?
Great video especially for the first on a channel😮
Would love to see especially multicolored commanders!
It's hard to find fun/unique commanders in the higer edhrec rankings
Thank you! Yeah, EDHRec is such a great tool, but taken at face value it homogenizes decks a little too much in my opinion. I already started looking at two colour combinations, but first I will work through the mono coloured Commanders.
Use scryfall and brute force it lol you find lots of interesting things just searching basic phrases like "whenever draw" or "players can't"
too much boring commanders in this video. half or less will be better
One man's trash is another man's treasure :D
u should do some research before you say something is useless...
fr fr
Looks at every commander in the game. Gets told in the comments he didn't do enough research. 😅
