if the only counter on Skullyboy is a -1/-1 he immediately dies and if he ever comes back he immediately has 0 toughness so dies again and it cannot ever be removed. truly, what green deserves.
Not something you can do very often, even if you know to prepare for it, but damn if it ain't funny. Just make sure that he don't got anything that cares about creatures dying. Which could be hard with those colors. Fuck.
Also get nething that adds +1/+1 counter on etb off the field
It can be removed by any effect that has a creature etb with a +1 counter. Still funny though.

Mostly true, but anthem effects would save skullbriar if by some odd situation you could actually hit skullbriar with a -1/-1 counter. Granted, decks like skullbriar tend to not have anything but counter synergy, so this scenario is pretty unlikely.
Skullbriar is one of my favorite decks. And though it does hurt, I can't blame people for Black Sun's Zenithing him into oblivion. Though I do need people to understand that being chosen as the first hit is a *compliment*.
That's called getting your commander privileges revoked.
IMO the biggest downside with Skullbriar is having to choose who you piss off at the start of a 4 player game on those early turns by dealing 1-2 damage to them, because they **WILL** hold a grudge.
In my playgroup I make a big deal about welcoming an early hit as taking RESPECT DAMAGE. My friends have picked up on sending 3 points of respect. Now, months later, nobody gets upset when Ahrabo eminences up Jungle lion to go in for 5 damage on turn 2. It's a good system, games flow nicely, aggro doesn't get taken personally.
I love the Walking Grave because he's pacing, Start of the game; small little guy that's probably a threat later, mid point; terrifying monster good investment, end game OH GOD OH GOD WHY IS IT THAT BIG HOW DID WE LET THAT HAPPEN.

I love how Skullbriar will often continue to get support with any future set as long as it involves counters
Also worth noting the ozolith also gets the counters from Skullbriar when it dies, so he comes back and you just get to double them
Combined with Tawno's Coffin and any token doublers you can engage in cartoon villainy. Slap a death's presence in there for shiggles too while you're at it.
I'm pretty sure if you put the counters on the ozolith it removes them from skullbriar
@@cathalmolloy2002 the wording is really unintuitive but counters never actually move from a card to another card despite what the actual text says, the ozolith just sees every counter on a creature then generates that many on itself. I believe moving counters is actually one of the few abilities that doesn't say what it actually does, at least using the current oracle

Having seen Skullbriar, have you perhaps considered Me, the Immortal? She also keeps counters as she goes between zones, but (and this is the important part) she doesn't have to hit you to start putting up counters, just go to combat, AND she can also choose to put keyword counters on herself. you can also cast her from the graveyard by discarding two cards. AND AND, she's got Blue, so you can bring your Simic shenanigans in with her.
I've been enjoying her. Red gives you Spectacular Showdown, Akki Battle Squad, and Uncivil Unrest, and blue gives you Vorel, Danny Pink, and Slip Out the Back.
You did list all of the upsides, and there are plenty. But you didn't list the big downside. 3 extra mana. By the time she is on the board Skullbriar could possibly be threatening someones life.
I built Skullbriar as my first deck so I was interested in Me, tried her out and had a terrible time. She’s not strong enough to justify spending 5 mana. I built her as a voltron commander, she could have more potential as something else

Tawno's Coffin is some sleeper tech shit for this commander; it is an artifact that lets you exile a creature under it and if you let it untap it spits it out and crucially Puts Back All Auras And Counters on it. For skullbriar what this ACTUALLY means is you double the counters, and in addition you can use it to evade removal. Even if the coffin is removed it spits it out.
I don't know if it's slept on as much as it's a $130 reserved list card so no one owns a copy
@@Shark-Fist okay damn yeah that's fair. More than doubled in price since I snagged mine years ago and even then it was high as I was willing to spend. For all you digital decklist and proxy players though it's fair game.
I think it's funny that Maldy did Skullbriar after Kathril and didn't even note the shenanigans those two can get up to together

SkullyB was my first commander and he’s still one of my best. The very moldy zombie who gets danker and danker and can never be cleaned.
Scavenging him with Varolz only to replay him the same turn is a unique experience.

Using Skullbriar and Minas Morgul to give a Shadow counter is the best combo, nothing like an unblockable commander

Every single game can be seen as this guy's gym journey as you see him grow up,and eventually either getting better equipment for himself or turning to steroids, normally both
There was a time when I played skullbriar that I would keep a dumbbell nearby and rep out a number of curls = to however many counters were on at the time.
I call him The Thing That Wouldn't Die. He was basically my Halloween commander deck idea a few years ago, but he's so good, he lived through three other green decks I made and dismantled for being boring.
cool to see my favorite voltron asshole being shown off. I have so many fond memories of a hybrid aristocrat/dredge deck with skullbriar at the helm, just constantly dropping bombs on the table then bringing back skullbriar to swing in for big damage. it goes bink bink in the early game so that it can bonk bonk late game.
first and last time i've played against this commander i was playing a hapratra deck, -1/-1 on it the turn it came out before it could attack and he could never play his commander again because it was a 0/0 in the command zone
I will note that despite what you might expect from the wording of their respective effects, Skullbriar does in fact work with Ozolith to HILARIOUS results
The Ozolith's first ability doesn't move counters off the creature that's left the battlefield. Rather, you put the same number of each kind of counter the creature had onto The Ozoloith.

Skullbriar is the reason that Aether Snap and Black Sun's Zenith are some of my auto-includes anytime I'm playing Black. I once put 20 -1/-1 counters on a Skullbrair player's Ozilith, that was hilarious.

ozolith in decks where ozolith has no place being is always amazing, it doesn't say creature you control so i put it into a hapatra deck and used it as a -1/-1 cannon to destroy big creatures

My favourite crime with skullbriar is that the uncard timemachine. Time machines "remove from the game" is just old exile... which means skullbriar keeps his counter for the next game as well! *back to the future plays*

@@Shenanigans303 i play it in a jund un deck i call "leauge of future evil" that also plays Gus, and the "double cards" that allow you to do a spell now and then one again at the start of the next match with the opponent. Run squandered resources, because if you are about to win or lose the game it doesnt matter if you sac all your lands for an extra spell! It needs some tweaking however and i plan to change it a little as its a little divided between that combo and a baron von count combo in the deck
