@bryan our hero Some game saves, like Demon's Souls, are locked, so you cannot back them up, unless you have a PSN account (then you can back them up on Sony's cloud servers) or unless you are backing up the entire PS3 Hard Drive to restore it to a new one (this is what I did a couple of times). Not "an eternity"! USB itself has a greater speed, but it's limited to the HD speed. My estimative of 100 GB/h is purely empirical, based on experience. Cheers.
Nice! I was originally going to go with a 1TB but since I had a 500gb laying around, I went with that. We'll see how quickly PSN+ games fill up my drive though.
It should last. My backlog is so huge it ain't funny. 200+ games and still have about 30Gb left. The PS4 on the other had... I concluded that the maximum amount of games one can have installed at the same time is 65+. Not so great.

Yeah, you can put in a new hard drive. Just need to make sure you have the latest full firmware and install it on the new hard drive. It will auto format once you put the PS3 up with the new hard drive. Also, if you had cloud saving turned on you could just download it to the new drive.

hasnt anything to do with your hard drive. the error means that some data on the disc is damaged. a quick google search would have told you that. only thing you can do is get a new copy of the game and try again or try and clean the disc.

The flash drive is not only for the saved data but for the software. When you install the new hard drive, it will prompt you to format the drive. There are instances when the system software will not auto start, at that time you will need to load the software from the flash drive.

Jose Casarez well my ps3 original drive was so damaged, it just kept freezing. I put another hard drive in it and I needed a flash drive to update the os. I wonder if there's a way to get my saved data off the old drive now that it's not in the console. I don't want to take the chance of putting corrupted data on the replacement drive.

the os is not stored on the hard drive. *however* all your settings and firmware updates are. that means you have to have a usb stick with the latest firmware to get it to boot and all your users and everything are gone, basically resetting the console to stock. so back them up on a usb drive
@@Matt-yj1lz basically, but dont worry about that. a small usb stick costs like 2$ (you only need like 250mb) and if you dont have a pc you can easily ask someone to use theirs (it litterly takes 1 minute to download it from sony and then copy it to the stick) or go to a public library or something, they often let you use pcs for free.
Derrick Schupp you don't have to back it up it up if all you care about is the game saves. Keep it mind all other settings, and downloads will need to be manually completed if you don't restore from a back up.
It depends on how much stuff is on your PS3. I had about 100 gigs of stuff so I had to use a 128GB flash drive to do the backup. You can also use a USB hard drive. My backup took 3 hours for 100GB, and the restore took the same time. Just make sure your flash drive/external HDD is formatted FAT32, cause the PS3 won't use anything else. But Win-doze won't format anything bigger than 32GB as FAT32 so you have to use an ap to do the formatting.

Mount it sound like your drives on way out, it might be good idear to strip down and clean it out and redo the thermal past on the processer

Go to PS's site they explain everything there.You just download the update on an usb drive and then plug it when the PS3 asks you to.

Did the PS3 boot up properly? It should have formatted the drive soon after it was booted up. Did you receive any errors?

Yes you can fit a 1TB drive in there. I believe 1.5TB is the limit but I'm not exactly sure on that.
