- How to Install SSD in PS3 CECHA01
How to add more game storage to PS3 and at the same time make it a bit faster? Well, we can do this by installing an SSD in the PS3 and the installation is actually really simple. PS3 Model CECHA01 is backwards compatible with PS1 and PS2 games, which is a reason why so many gamers and PlayStation fans like that model PS3. Adding more storage space and a bit of speed makes the console that much better.

The reason being the ps3 makes installing the ps3 os software so easy is because the os is already installed on the Cell processor built into the motherboard that chip is so ridiculous but alas it was never used to its full potential except for games like god of war 3, uncharted, and the last of us. Also the difference of ps3 games on an ssd is astonishing for example framerate/ texture load ins, load times, and quick game install.
dude i'm so hyped now! I can't wait to install ssd in my ps3. i also plan on reapplying thermal paste.

I had the same experience, thanks to PAB Games for the tutorial.

Easier than softmodding all my OG Xbox's and doing SATA upgrades in them, RGB mods on any system, laser swaps on Saturns/DCs/PS1s and any handheld mod! Worked like a charm, 500GB SSD Blue WD SA510 was in stock at local BestBuy at $34 only, was going to go HDD route but they're actually MORE money as of Sept. 2023 at least. i love when upgrades go as planned w/o hiccups, thanks for streamlined easy vid, great job!
I have a CECHA01 myself. I’ve been thinking of doing this, thanks Pab
I threw my backward compatible ps3 away when the hard drive stopped working, I didnt know back tthen it could be fixed easily, and today they are worth a lot of money

Thank you for straight to the point info. Well done sir.
I have 3 PS3s in 2024, and I love them!! I have a 500GB Intel drive I am going to install the drive thanks so much for the information!
Looks like the same drive I bought for my ps4 pro a while back ago. Except it was a 1 tb ssd and now has been torn out for sacrifice for external storage for my ps5.
Thanks for sharing I didn't know how to do that.
Great video! I enjoyed the tutorial.

Please open up the A01 and clean out the dust for the sake of extending the life of it, even some new thermal paste aswell.
That's exactly what I just finished doing. Took about 4 hours and it's like new!!!
and here i was. following your instructions step by step formatting a flashdrive lolXD
Fantastic guide!
I'll definitely keep this in mind
I already did this but still interesting to watch :)
This did not work for me initially. I had an error when it tried to search for the update from the USB. I have a CECHK04 and i am from Finland. I went to my countries Sony website, downloaded the operating systems reinstall program. It includes the latest update which right now is 4.90. I formatted my SSD and installed the operating system again. Now it works.
Thanks for this video! My drive crashed last night in my PS3. I have the 1TB version of that drive coming!

This is useful because I got a new for ps3 Christmas but I asked for a ps5 and I already have a ps4

I just did a 1TB HDD and wish I had done an SSD but I got this drive about a year ago (mid 2021) and just got around around to putting it in (mid 2022). An upgrade is an upgrade though
1tb should be enough for 80 to 150 games on PS3. 1tb is basically overkill. Makes sense on PS4 but most games on PS3 are only 5gb-10gb lol.

Thank you for the helpful video! Let me just add one thing I got an ERROR: data corrupted (8002F2E4) every time I tried to get the flash drive detected by the PS3. I started to panic and tried 3 flash drives with the method in the video. What finally worked is I had to download the PUP file at the very top of the page on Sony's website. For some godforsaken reason, the one used in this video (near the bottom) is not good. At least, it wasn't for me. And it seems Sony really sucks about updating all of their links with the proper file.
@@hermitintheory654 No problem! You too!
I upgraded both mine an my brothers PS3's to a 1 TB SSD an wow what a difference in speed it makes. I've loaded 40 of my games onto it from disk to ISO and now I don't have to load the disk ea. time. I would say average speed to transfer the game 15 to 20 minutes an on FAT32....that is fast!! All the other reads I've made say that it don't make that much of a difference but it does and I recommend it if it's in the budget.
That’s awesome to hear! 😎
I just slapped a sandisk ssd ultra 3d 1tb inside and is all good!!!

If you didn't need to re flash it's probably because the bios and all was probably pre flashed instead of being flash to the drive or something like that. Unlike the ps4 and all
How would you reflash it?
I sold my 60gb PS3 with the onboard Emotion Engine, but I have a brand new 80gb with the emulator I bought in 2009. I've bought a 500gb 870 EVO for it. I'm using the backup utility because the HDD has games on it

going to try to upgrade to a bigger hard drive soon and will report the results. It is worth mentioning that PS3 needs a 2.5 inch type of hard drive I know it's something small but it can make a difference if someone orders one or potentially gets scammed by not knowing the type of Hard drive PS3 needs. I say this because while working on my OG xbox I learned the hard way the difference between SATA and IDE hard drives. I had several hard SATA hard drives ready to go from my previous OG xbox later on finding out I need a 2.5 SATA. Again very small but very important information.

You'll be safe with 1tb. Beyond that, I'm not sure, I was planning to get 2tb for my ps3, but the info i found on the internet about whether or not it will have issues is conflicting, so I went with 1tb to stay safe. @@AntonioO1996 thanks man, i guess i will go with 1 tb to be safe, yeah it will stay for now but there is still chance that sony will try this kinda of act again, they dont really care about preservation or using it as backwards compatibility on ps5 unfortunately

Hi, I'm planning to replace my ps3 slim HDD from my ps3 FAT, and I believe I still have a games file on it, am I have to format the HDD from my ps3 FAT just like you did or is it just plug and play with no problem?
You may want to do some research on UA-cam to see what people have done. But in my experience, I formatted the drive before I installed it and when I installed it, it didn’t prompt me to install anything. I think it recognized it right away without me having to use a flash drive

Is the official firmware capable with the ssd drive?
I don't wanna use a custom firmware.
Any ideas what tondo with 4tb ssd also don't have ps4 and now with ps5 out kinda pointless to get 1
I have 1 TB SSD put in mine. The drive is faster, but not by much due to the limitations of SATA 1 in a PS3. If a PS3 had SATA 3 you would see a massive performance gain. The performance increase you get is very minimal. I'd say the drive performs about 1.5 times faster in my superslim. Maybe a little faster than that. It should be performing 10 times faster than the drive it came with. The real win with an SSD is the longevity of the PS3. The drive will most likely last until the PS3 dies and long after that too. An SSD's lifespan is pretty much totally dependant on the amount of data it transfers. The more you write onto the drive the quicker the memory cells wear out and the drive dies. If you don't write to the drive a lot the drive can last a very long time. A hard drive usually dies due to mechanical failure. Moving parts giving out. Something you don't have to worry about with an SSD at all.
You should put cfw on it that way u can monitor the temps and make sure it don’t over heat and get yolo :)

1tb is overkill. 256gb or 500gb should be more than enough. This is the PS3 we are talking about not a PS4. Most games only take up around 5 to 7 gigabytes and 10 to 25 at the most. Some games only load off of the disc so they take up a few megabytes just for the save data. You can also use any SATA drive as long as it is a 2.5 inch drive and no thicker than 9.5mm.
