Great tutorial, upgraded to a 1tb ssd fine but had a very slight issue after the restart. Controller turns on system but when it gets to the user selection screen the controller lights would constantly flash and not connect. I found a fix, turn the power off at the wall on the user selection screen. When I booted it back up the console complained about an improper shutdown, scanned for errors and when it came back on the controller now works fine from turning the console on.
Thanks. I didn't even know this utility existed. I have done multiple hdd swaps and this was the easiest. Yesterday I upgraded 2 ps3 slims to ITB with this method.

I found this video's method the most detailed and simpliest way to upgrade the HDD of my PS3, so I've ordered a Seagate FireCuda SSHD 1TB drive and a SATA/USB adapter according to the video. I had Rebug CFW 4.81.2 REX on my system and I couldn't find the Debug for HDD Exchange Utility for the first sight... After some research I figured I have to switch the Debug Menu type to CEX to make it available, so I was good to go, but after 2 hours of copying i've got the "error occurred during the copy operation (800100B)" message, so I've formatted the drive on my pc to FAT32 and tried again...same results, I tried it again thinking it might have been just some reading/writing error, but no luck after another 2 hours. Then I just switched to 4.81.2 D-REX firmware following the instuctions of another modzlink video, but the same error occurred during the copying progress to the new drive. So now I'm on 4.81.2 D-REX and I removed some stuff of the already small 120 GB initial hard drive to make it copy only like 69GB total, surprisingly the processing still took 2 hours and the result was the same error emssage. In the end I just used the backup utility with a thumb drive which took only about 30 minutes, swapped the drives and I was ready to install the CFW on the new drive, but... by some miracle the Rebug booted on and seems like all the 69 GB has been copied to the new hard drive, I have everything I had before with additional 880 GB space. Also I didn't have that Rebuilding data on the disk screen at all, nor the exchange completed or restart the system message, after the hard drive swap it looked like everything is great, no message indicating the hard drive has changed. However after I've restarted the console a new message came up about corrupted files and telling me the storage must be formatted and all data will be deleted, so I still had to restore my backup from the thumbdrive.

Lowkeymodzz get the DRex version and change your target id to 84 CEX in the Rebug toolbox And ensuring qa is enabled before following the rest of the steps in this video but as long as your on cex it doesn't seem to have problems.
CDubs HasIt no, theres a toggle to switch the toolbox to cex version without completely switching firmwares. woulda been much simpler if he showed this in the video, considering most people i know use dex
Lowkeymodzz some people aren't very smart and they download the straight cex aka rex ... idk why anyone would do that seeing as how DRex 4.81.2 has both.. but if you're on cex either through Rex or DRex you should have no problems with this upgrade. I do recommend disabling the internet and or unplugging your Ethernet cable just for safe measures.
Okay ... since soooo many people have been reporting problems on a hard drive exchange on a 4.81.2 Rebug CFW ... I have now successfully exchanged 3 hard drives on this firmware. So I would like to post the steps I go through... If ModzLink doesn't care that is: Note: each of these exchanges was performed on ReBug CFW 4.81.2 D-REX... if you're on straight Rebug CEX 4.81.2 I recommend updating to the DRex as you are able to change the target ID from CEX and DEX on the DRex version found on Rebugs website. I also used a radio shack branded USB 3.0 to Sata cable plugged directly into the new hard drive as seen on this video. The hard drive I chose for all 3 was Seagate 1TB SATA Laptop Hard drive powered by Barracuda(w/e the fk that is).. it was like 70$.. the adapter probably doesn't matter as to which one you use. I turn on the PS3 and I go to Rebug toolbox to make sure that QA Toggle is enabled. I then go past system information all the way to the right to the last menu subheading and then all the way down to the very last option which should be "change ps3ID" and I select 84 CEX... I exit back to the xmb menu. Then the procedure i have been using is pretty much the same as seen here in the video.. you go to debug settings under settings in the xmb menu as shown and then to HDD exchange. Follow the steps to physically replace the drive as shown in the video. I would however let the PS3 cool down for about an hour after copying the drive over before exchanging the hard drive. I then plug everything back up and turn it on.. it rebuilds the data and gets stuck at about 70% and then goes through, again, shown in this video.. but have patience it will go through. It will then restart and the first time your profiles load it will be a little laggy but it will go away once you go into your profiles and restart.. wallah.. everything is new again. Huge shoutout to ModzLink for this video and the inspiration to help people who were having probs on 4.81.2 Rebug..
Grey Skies if it doesn't show up I would recommend updating to the newest drex. But that could also fuck up all your other stuff ...so you can do it a different way which may be easier for you. Go to back up utility and make a backup to a USB external hard drive. Synchronize trophies with the server. If you care about this. Remove and exchange internal hard drive. Keep the Internet disabled beyond this point. Make sure you have your current custom firmware or higher on a USB drive in the right hand USB socket. Plug in your controller to the other socket. Boot your PS3 into restore/recovery/safe mode. Not hard to do. Many tutorials on how to do this. A matter of pressing the power button a number of times. Hit restore. It'll want to install firmware. Make sure you install firmware from the USB drive with your firmware on it. Follow on screen instructions until you get back to main PS3/Rebug menu, plug your external drive back into the right hand USB socket and go to settings and back to back up settings. Hit restore from back up and select your back up. It'll do its thing and restart. And there ya go. But you do need to make absolutely sure QA is toggled either way. You can do this in Rebug toolbox.

+bEzX Yes if you don't care about the data on the console you can start from scratch by following the Rebug 4.75.1 tutorial. While the new hard drive is in the tray. Make sure to install the a downgrader, toggle QA, install 3.55 CFW then rebug or any other CFW. If you don't do this you could run into other issues later on when switching from CEX to DEX. So what I did was a mix between the following: To add context: I upgraded from 160Gb HDD to 1TB 7200RPM HDD on Rebug 4.81 DEX. - community.eu.playstation.com/t5/PS3-Support/Error-at-70-of-rebuild-process-when-adding-1tb-hdd-to-12gb-super/td-p/17599604 And, -www.ps3hax.net/showthread.php?t=99082 The steps: 1) Enter Safe mode: "(Hold down the power button on the console waiting for the first beep, then keep it depressed until the console switches off completely. Remove your finger from the button. Then, hold down again, wait 5(ish) seconds for the console to beep, then wait 2 further seconds for two successive beeps. After the second beep, take your finger off the power button)" 2) Select first option 3 and then 4. Quoting Playerkp420: "Option 3. Restore File System and Option 4. Rebuild Database, will not format the HDD. But after choosing Option 3. it is normal for the PS3 to say something is corrupt then restore the file system. Even if nothing is corrupt. It does the thing like when the ps3 wasn't shut off correctly, but nothing should get formatted. If you cancel it after starting though, it will probably want u to format." However when I go to check the free space it still says the same amount as on the previous HDD, 122GB/931GB, and it should be something like 893GB/931GB, what can I do for it to be detected properly?
To fix the incorrect free space shown which was apparently because it had all of its space unallocated and when restoring it only allocated 160gb as per previous HDD since it couldn't perform the rebuild successfully, I formatted the HDD, it kept the CFW and it now shows the correct amount of space however the data was deleted. To recover the data I restored it from a backup I did as a failsafe. So I didn't have to reinstall CFW with pendrive but had to follow some steps from this other guide: ua-cam.com/video/HyjXR9GMjfw/v-deo.html Now it does say 828GB/931GB which is what is expected from a 1TB HDD. For the trophies I backed up the whole "dev_hdd0\home" which includes the "Trophy" folder via FTP and sent it back to the new HDD the same way.
@@nicolasbuitrago8484 hey can you help me,? I installed a 500gb drive and it says only 20gb available obviously it’s unallocated how do I format it without losing my cfw?
my debug for hdd exchange was not there at 1st and im on cfw rebug cex 4.81.2 all i did was go to rebug tool book, xmb to debug then go back to xmb then debug settings and there it is .
To do this on Evilnat 4.88 you need to download and install the Rebug tool box package. From the Rebug tool box app enable QA flags. Exit to the Playstation home screen. Go to settings section and go all the way down to Network settings option and hold L1,L2,R1,R2,L3, and down on the control pad at the same time to unlock the Debug menu. You must have an actual PS3 controller for this to work because the HDD utility will ask you to press the center PS3 button. I learned the hard way that PS4 and PS5 controllers will not be accepted.

However after I've restarted the console a new message came up about corrupted files and telling me the storage must be formatted and all data will be deleted, so I still had to restore my backup from the thumbdrive.
geez what an unfortunate journey you had.
Im looking forward to doing this but I hope I dont run into this
Hey there I was checking out your videos .. I wanted to ask about JB PS3's is the same as an XBox 360 JTAG"d meaning able to do the same things ?? If so i was checking out your website consoles for sale. Im very interested do I have an option of mailing you my unit and having it Mod'd ?
Great 👍 finally got around to upgrading the drive. Perfect 🤩
Hello, after the HDD copying process is completed, is the data in the first HDD to which we copied the data deleted at the end of the process, or does it remain intact so that we can use it as a backup in the future?
Great. Can i swap Jailbroked HDD by regular one and just use whenever i'll need it? Will JB HDD stil functional after swap?
I have given PS3 Slim with some games installed on it already. Firmware version shows 4.76. So i'm assuming it's a moded PS3 but i couldn't find any CF or MultiMan installed on it. How i know you can't insall games on HDD with Official Firmware.
Any idea? Thanks.

I have 4 ps3 which 2 are jailbroken already with many games on each. My question is that my old ps3 launch edition I want to install 500gb drives and I would like to copy just the games, but I do not want to do it from the bluray unit. Can I just copy from one drive to another?
Thanks a lot for making life simple for us. Great tutorial 👌
for hard drive 1tb what are the features ?, measurements are 2.5' 9.5 mm ? sata 3 is compatible ? 7200 is good? , how much cashe memory ?, hdd usb 3.0 is compatible to put it internally? the best brands? thanks anyway
I'm new to ps3 jailbreaks and ps3 modding in general, my console came with a 100gb internal hdd, which is garbage, i'm in the process of upgrading to a 500 as its all i have lyinga round. What i have done so far is in RebugToolbox turn Q/A toggle to enable, change ps3ID to CEX 84, then somewhere else in rebug toolbox there was a option called DebugMenu type, i just changed it to CEX also, and now the Debug HDD Utility Exchange shows up, right now its cloning to the new drive. Hopefully i wont experience any errors...

The process is same with old phat model - NAND system?
And before transfer hdd need to be formated at any system like fat32,ntsc....?
Going to upgrade mine, did you find the answer for this?

can i just not get my ofw hard drive and stick it in my jb ps3?
Hey, I had a question about when copying the to the new hard drive. I keep getting an error around 93%. It says "An error occurred during the copying operation." (02005120) Thanks.
Did u ever figure this out mate? Mine gets a error a 93% too

I can replace 320 gb (slim ofw) to my ps3 fat 40 gb (cfw)?
Great video just what I was looking for
i tried to upgrade from 320 gb to 1 TB and when I try to runn the process it says that there is not enough space on the disk... what should i Do?
Delete something that you don't care about 🤣
I have a HDD external dock with 2 slots. Can i just clone my internal ps3 HDD into a higher capacity one? Would that work and have the extra space visible to the ps3?
So i did clone the hdd to a bigger one but the free space is the same as the old one :( What the hell :((((
The data on the ps3 HDD is encrypted and will clone it exactly the same. External cloning dock is only good for replacing HDD with 1 of the same size
Will this method work on rebug 4.82 cfw ??? also will the pkg installed games retain their licenses or do i have to reactivate them again??? I have a 500 gb slim but i was thinking about bumping the storage to 1 tb.
Hello I have a REBUG 4.75.1.3 DEX how can I do the same as bc I don't get that options on rebug toolbox? do I have to go back to CEX?
wait, you have a white ps3 that's isn't CECH3XXXX series??? give me a link
also one of the screws on the hdd case is stuck by accident when replacing hard drives so how can i fix it???

Hi Modzlinz, my ps3 rebug 4.80.1 does not have the option debug for HDD exchange utility, what other option do I have? I'm trying to upgrade my 120 to 1T hard drive.
please help, thanks
make sure you're qa toggled and on cex (REX) cfw
HUS Official UA-cam i have the same issue. there a toggle that lets you switch to cex debug menu hopefully i dont fck something up by not switching to full cex cfw
If ModzLink doesn't care that is:
Note: each of these exchanges was performed on ReBug CFW 4.81.2 D-REX... if you're on straight Rebug CEX 4.81.2 I recommend updating to the DRex as you are able to change the target ID from CEX and DEX on the DRex version found on Rebugs website.
+CDubs HasIt thanks for providing useful info
Is it very important to swith to 84 CEX if currently in DEX?

Sorry to ask but What If you don't have the 2.0 Sata To USB Thing. Im on 4.75.1 DREX And thinking of Upgrading my HDD 320gb to 500gb. What happens If I Remove the 320gb and place my new hardrive SHALL I Just the Rebug Firmware Using my USB??
+bEzX Yes if you don't care about the data on the console you can start from scratch by following the Rebug 4.75.1 tutorial. While the new hard drive is in the tray. Make sure to install the a downgrader, toggle QA, install 3.55 CFW then rebug or any other CFW. If you don't do this you could run into other issues later on when switching from CEX to DEX.

After the process is finished and I plug in the new hard drive I get "an error has occurred during the rebuild process" and have to format it and try again. This has happened twice now, how do I fix this? I'm using PS3Hen instead of Rebug if that's important.
What format is PS3 HDD in? Doesn't read on PC, shows as unformatted.
Once I finished upgrading the HDD, I didnt get the option or anything saying "rebuilding database" and its still showing as 500mb free (Which is wrong, I upgraded from a 40GB because it was full) any ideas?
If I dont want too keep anything from old hdd, could I just insert the new hdd? Would I lose the cfw?

I have the same issue, +ModzLink are you around to give us a hand with this please?
So what I did was a mix between the following:
To add context: I upgraded from 160Gb HDD to 1TB 7200RPM HDD on Rebug 4.81 DEX.
- community.eu.playstation.com/t5/PS3-Support/Error-at-70-of-rebuild-process-when-adding-1tb-hdd-to-12gb-super/td-p/17599604
And,
-www.ps3hax.net/showthread.php?t=99082
The steps:
1) Enter Safe mode: "(Hold down the power button on the console waiting for the first beep, then keep it depressed until the console switches off completely. Remove your finger from the button.
Then, hold down again, wait 5(ish) seconds for the console to beep, then wait 2 further seconds for two successive beeps. After the second beep, take your finger off the power button)"
2) Select first option 3 and then 4.
If you cancel it after starting though, it will probably want u to format."
However when I go to check the free space it still says the same amount as on the previous HDD, 122GB/931GB, and it should be something like 893GB/931GB, what can I do for it to be detected properly?
To fix the incorrect free space shown which was apparently because it had all of its space unallocated and when restoring it only allocated 160gb as per previous HDD since it couldn't perform the rebuild successfully, I formatted the HDD, it kept the CFW and it now shows the correct amount of space however the data was deleted. To recover the data I restored it from a backup I did as a failsafe. So I didn't have to reinstall CFW with pendrive but had to follow some steps from this other guide:
ua-cam.com/video/HyjXR9GMjfw/v-deo.html
Now it does say 828GB/931GB which is what is expected from a 1TB HDD.
For the trophies I backed up the whole "dev_hdd0\home" which includes the "Trophy" folder via FTP and sent it back to the new HDD the same way.

@@jujucattys156 I figured it out, I had to change my CFW from Evilnat to Rebug CFW to gain access to debug settings
