Just to let you know, a heavily believed theory about the Stone Dragon not awakening is because it was already awakened: Mulan. When Mulan prepares to leave for the army, there are multiple images of dragons, starting with Mulan siting at Stone Dragon Statue, her sword hilt being a dragon, and other images. Mulan is the stone dragon preparing to defend the family. The song about her reflection showing what she is inside also comes back in the battle against the Hun Army. Mulan looks into the reflection of her sword and sees a mountain.
Back in those time terror tactics was the norm for spreading fear and causing as much chaos and destruction to exhaust their resources and the people would starve to death. This was done to force them to submit or die.
I love how when Mulan reveals that it was her that almost defeated his army, Shan Yu is not like "a girl?!" He sees her as "the soldier from the mountains". This is due to the fact that, unlike most Asian people at the time, the huns and mongols treated women with more respect and dignity, they had bigger roles in society than just marrying. There are hypothesis that the Hun army would also have female soldiers.
Tho that is if you were one of there own but if you aren’t then well your going to want a quick death sucide is better than what the mongols and huns do to women and children
@Nisa Rojas nomadic cultures are known for being lenient on gender rules usually because they don’t have large populations for example the amazons were thought to be inspired by the scythians a nomadic culture group in modern day Russia and Ukraine because they deployed female soldiers along with males but keep in mind this in only war not leadership the only nomad queen I know if is Tomyrus a Scythian
So this is oversimplified but the reason the great dragon statue didn’t wake up was because Mulan was the great dragon in spirit and when she recognized her true self she awoke the dragon within her.
Shen yu is one of the best villains ever. Sure he isn't as flashy and he doesn't sing but he actually does not underestimate Mulan in fact he takes her as a serious threat the fact he stops going after everyone else and focuses on her
Absolutely. I think another reason why he's so great is his unpredictability. The soldiers expect him to be intimidated by the announcement of his arrival or the fact that the odds are against him, when he demonstrates his ruthless and sinister nature. Literally burning the Chinese flag saying, "Perfect.", ordering the execution of a scout after letting them run, and plowing through the imperial army in the village while also leaving the village in ruin. Truly scary villain.
Shen Yu is also a Hun, and while Hun women didn't actively go off to war, they absolutely knew how to fight because, hey, guess whose job it was to protect them while their men were out raiding and pillaging? Attila's daughter challenged would-be suitors to a wrestling match wagering her hand against three of their finest horses as a final test of suitability to be her husband. By the time she actually got married, it is said she presented the resulting 50,000 strong herd of horses to her husband as a bridal gift.
The song that plays when Mulan has made the decision to go in her father's stead is so awesome. I love when that beat drops. It's called "Haircut" and I listen to it on repeat. Such a short piece of music, but I love it.
What I think is interesting is that Shan Yu doesn't underestimate Mulan as an enemy just because she's a woman. He just sees another enemy, and a worthy one at that. But that is to be expected... while Hun women did not actively go to battle, they learned how to fight just like the men did. Because SOMEONE has to protect the camp while the men are off raiding. Attila's daughter supposedly challenged would-be suitors to a wrestling match, wagering her hand against three of their finest horses, as a final test of suitability to be her husband. It is said that when she finally married, she presented the resulting 50,000 strong herd to her husband as a wedding gift.
12:24 there is a theory that the great dragon "became" Mulan. That she carries the soul of it, which is why now the stone is just stone, and the dragon is Mulan. When she cried while sitting under it.
12:20 In this film, Mulan acts as the family protector, and therefore takes the role of the great stone dragon - that's why it didn't wake up. Another detail is Mulan having her moment of clarity while sitting on the statue in the rain before she goes and takes her fathers armour/place
Even using the force required work and hard training in the original story. That's a pity that scenarios with morals of "even when talented or striving you need to work hard" are mostly gone.
7:38 "if I were truly to be myself I would break my family's heart" This line hit so hard when I was a young girl cos it summed up how I saw my relationship with my dad. I was a nerdy, theatre loving girl who wasn't "girly" and everything I did just seemed to irritate my dad
32:38 "He is a human being! He is not Superman! He is not Captain America!" I always wanted a scene with someone yelling at Shen-Yu, "Your mother was a Yeti!!" and Shen replying, "How did you --?" then just frowning and charging at them. There were legends of Yeti/Yeren/Sasquatch having children by human mates, who would become enormous and brutal upon reaching adulthood. Well, that was my explanation for the more-than-human villain.
The main thing I like about the original from the remake is that Mulan succeeds in training on her own, and not with the help of Chi. As a plus for the remake, I can say that Mulan herself recognized herself as a woman, but here the message about the fact that lying is bad disappears.
2:12 Assuming Google is ever a reliable source for info, the Great Wall was about 16-26 feet tall with some parts of it looking taller then they actually are due to the ridges on the outside. 12:20 Just to let you know, a heavily believed theory about the Stone Dragon not awakening is because it was already awakened: Mulan. 19:36 Remember! The weights separately represent Discipline and Strength. Shen mentions in the beginning that you need BOTH to reach the arrow. Perfect use of a metaphor 23:38 Ambushing your enemy is extremely effective, even if said enemy outnumbers your own. There are dozens of historical examples, but a personal favorite that comes to mind is the Battle of San Jacinto. General Sam Houston led the Texan Army of about 900 against Santa Anna’s Mexican Army of about 1,500. Long story short, Sam ambushed Santa Anna and won the battle within 18 minutes. I skipped a lot of important context, but the main lesson of the story is: Don’t make camp near the enemy and assume you’re safe when your reinforcements arrive. 24:18-24:58 This isn’t mentioned but very important. Notice the Hun Archers focus their aim on the canons, destroying a bunch in the process. Then immediately after Shen and the group fire their canons with one remaining, Shan Yu makes a cavalry charge without fear of Bombardment. None of that was coincidence, but clear signs of Shan Yu and his leaders planning ahead, and making an *AMBUSH.* If shen’s group had as many canons as they started with, they’d probably be able to destroy the army with bombardment alone, or weaken the army enough to win in close melee, but they lost their canons to the archers, assumedly along with men (the deaths weren’t shown because DISNEY). It’s unfortunate for the Hun Army that one canon was all Mulan needed for an avalanche to happen.
"A girl worth fighting for" is the last song in the movie because immediately after it stops, they reach the destroyed village, which turns out to be the village of the little girl who owned the doll. The message couldn't be any louder: that little girl is the real girl worth fighting for.
fun fact: The voice actor for the Emperor's advisor and Mulan's VA play father and daughter in Agents of SHIELD. Dunno if you've seen it but there is also a brief scene where she does the exact pose in 32:46 as a nod to this film.

I remember seeing Mulan on the big screen upon its release with my family and it was great fun! I like the art style, the characters (my favorite being Mushu, of course), and the songs are cool to, especially “Reflection”and I’ll Make a Man Out of You.” This was a fun Disney rewatch, looking forward to the next, Cody!
I like to think that after the end, Mulan never fought again, because she never wanted to be a fighter, she did it only to protect her father, she's great at it, but she decided to find what she wants to do with her life from this point on instead of doing what she was told to, and she's so peaceful that I find hard to believe she had a carrier in the army after that :) but that's what I want to happen, unfortunately Mulan II really happened ^^
There’s a theory about why the stone dragon didn’t awaken. Before Mulan makes the decision to go to war in her father’s place, she is seen sitting under the dragon in the rain, seeing her reflection before the montage of putting on the armor and leaving. So it may be that the spirit of the dragon lives within Mulan, that she in a way is the stone dragon, which is why the dragon didn’t awaken when Mushu tried to waken it.
And technically the only person that was an a princess I mean has nothing to do with royalty I mean Pocahontas doesn't really but I get the chief is somewhat the equivalent to a King but this is the daughter of just a normal soldier guy she's got jack s*** to do with royalty

Mulan is yet another one of my all time favorite Disney films! Eddie Murphy's performance as Mushu was just the greatest it's too bad Eddie didn't do a lot of voice acting though other than Donkey from the Shrek movies, but the point is i love this movie especially because it's one of the few Disney movies with a non-princess protagonist.
I've heard that the scene where Mulan cuts her hair with a sword, whereas the Western fandom praised the scene's epicness (and thought it meant a new beginning, liberation for Mulan...) it was not welcomed in the Chinese audience, since Chinese soldiers would maintain their hair long. If she were trying to disguise as a soldier, cutting her hair would make her identity as a woman more evident. That is why in the Live Action there is no haircut scene.
Just wanted to say, the great wall of China is not that tall, but EXTREMELY long, that's why in the begining of the movie Shan Yun could climb over it easily
Fun fact that could potentially ruin a childhood or two: those things they were shooting into the tree during the training montage? They were pomegranates. So many people back in the day thought they were tomatoes, but no. Tomatoes didn't make it to China until the 1500s. The legend of Mulan took place in the Northern Wei Dynasty, somewhere between 386 and 534 AD.
People have said it countless times about the various flaws and inaccuracies that this movie has had on Chinese culture. But with me being born Asian and raised with various Chinese influences in my life, I've always loved this movie. It was something I could relate to a degree. I recognized some inaccuracies as a kid. But I loved this for it's fantasy, charm, setting and story regardless. To me at least, it was a charming mix of putting a hint of of modern, with history. And of course, how can you forget the epic soundtrack? It's iconic with capturing the vibe, and has what made Mulan a great Disney-fied take!
My boss learned the hard way never to say "Let's get down to business" before starting a meeting. Because he knows I will want to defeat the Huns LOL My co-workers and I did troll him once, because he would say "Let's get down to business" and I would always answer "We're going to defeat the Huns?" and one day, he said let's get down to business and my 5 coworkers and I sang the first part of the song. He threw his pen down and walked out of the conference room . I have a cool boss. lol
Mulan is one of my four favorite Disney princesses, she’s clumsy but that’s what makes her relatable for most girls, she becomes stronger as the story progresses
Learned this a while back. There are no songs in the movie after Girl Worth Fighting For - apart from the refrain As far as the colour thing goes I think it is just to help tell characters apart.
One of the best animated film of 1998, and I can put "Mulan" with my most favorite animated films of the same year I was born that's "The Prince Of Egypt".
Civilians were often targeted in warfare because they want to raid them for supplies and valuables. It would also show how terrifying you were and cut your enemies off from the future supplies the civilians could produce. War has always been a horrible process.
I love the BLATANT insult towards Chi-Fu in "A Girl Worth Fighting For" Chi-Fu: I've a girl back home who's unlike any other Yao: Yeah, the only girl who'd love him is his mother X'DDDD
I mean even now, because I'm a girl, I'm 23 and I'm single people still look at and treat me like there is something wrong🤷♀️🤦♀️ family, friends, ect.....and after awhile you start to believe them I guess
I’m actually curious if you’ll react to Mulan 2. A lot of people brush it off as unneeded but I still thought it was cute even if some moments weren’t the greatest
Thanks Cody for recognizing the laws and gender roles in a movie set in ancient China. Some reactors were like “why did Mulan’s father get angry when she spoke out against the officer?” Or they were angry that Shang left Mulan on the mountain after her reveal even though he literally spared her life. It’s not that hard to reason how the culture works back then!
7:56 I can tell you why I can relate to that song. As a gay man, I always felt like this song really describes what a lot of people in the LGBTQ+ community go through. They're living in this community that primarily only accepts heterosexual people so they feel forced to play someone they're not out of fear that if they don't, they'll let their family down. It's sad how even to this day, it's still an issue. Sorry for that downer lol Just felt like expressing why that song was always so personal to me.
While I understand Mulan's feeling she kind of messed up there at the end, if she had taken that counsel position it would have Done Wonders for the Women of China
A favorite Disney classic. I loved your reaction so much. Loved seeing you get into the song and lip syncing with it. Keep up the fantastic work. 😊💙💚 evrytime the crowd and the emperor bows I tear up so powerful.
12:18 i feel the same way, cody. I just don't understand why the stone dragon didn't woke up. like mushu's gong had the ability to wake up the spirits, so why not the stone dragon??? 🤔
The dragon's eyes glowing in the temple symbolizes Mulan's role as the protector of her family awakening, instead of the actual dragon. The reason Mushu couldn't wake the dragon is because the dragon was no longer there. Mulan is implied to be the Great Dragon that protects her family. I googled it, this was the answer
I saw years ago in IRL a post that said the reason the Great Stone Dragon didn't wake was because Mulan was the family's true guardian and when she left she took the dragons sprite with her.
Hey everyone! Thanks for watching my Reaction to Mulan! See you tomorrow for more Gravity Falls!

The true lesson we learned from Mulan is the following: "Work smarter, not harder!".
Maybe, but it's more that she does both. She seriously has to bust her ass to get into form during training. Even needs a montage!
That goes for women
Guys you work harder
Girls you work smarter to make others work for you
Not really since Mulan works harder than practically anyone in Let’s Make a Man Out of You

And of course, how can you forget the epic soundtrack? It's iconic with capturing the vibe, and has what made Mulan a great Disney-fied take!
Don't forget the scene where she decides to take her father's place it's so bad a** and dramatic without any words needed
Thank u for reacting this amazing movie !!! ❤
But seriously as an Asian ,
Being a women is totally a hardcore mode .
The scene where they are all bowing, has a historical bond- if your superior bowed before anyone, you as a commoner basically had to bow lower!
My boss learned the hard way never to say "Let's get down to business" before starting a meeting. Because he knows I will want to defeat the Huns LOL
My co-workers and I did troll him once, because he would say "Let's get down to business" and I would always answer "We're going to defeat the Huns?" and one day, he said let's get down to business and my 5 coworkers and I sang the first part of the song. He threw his pen down and walked out of the conference room .
I have a cool boss. lol
I love how despite he watched this film as a kid, he still makes new reactions and recognizes some moments in each scene
Mulan is one of my four favorite Disney princesses, she’s clumsy but that’s what makes her relatable for most girls, she becomes stronger as the story progresses
I love how she did all that an injuried
Best part of the film: "I'll Make a Man Out of You" 🎶 🔥
That and “True To Your Heart”
29:08 it's shang I feel the worst for I mean he hasn't even had a chance to mourn his father
I think the reason Mushu couldn’t wake the great stone dragon- because Mulan IS the great stone dragon.
I should’ve known that before.
Learned this a while back. There are no songs in the movie after Girl Worth Fighting For - apart from the refrain
As far as the colour thing goes I think it is just to help tell characters apart.
21:48 not just take it: this was before photography was invented, so someone painted it! Meaning they had to stand like that for several hours!
This is legit one of my favorite movies of all time. Watched it all the time as a kid, and I watched it with my dad a few months ago.
"She wiped out the entire army." Yeah, Mulan has the highest kill count of just about any character in Disney history.
Ahhh the scene with her reflection in the sword and her cutting her hair sends chills down my spine everytime! I love that part!
I can’t with the cuteness of your doggo 😍
7:05 *Me when I saw the Mulan 2020 remake*
*You may look like a fun movie but you will NEVER BRING YOUR FAMILY HONOR!!*
One of the best animated film of 1998, and I can put "Mulan" with my most favorite animated films of the same year I was born that's "The Prince Of Egypt".
And, I was born in 1997, when Hercules comes out.
You know when mushu called him self indestructible he definitely was telling the truth
Yes it’s the same actor that did Po’s dad in Kung Fu Panda
James Hong
He also voiced the Shaman in Turning Red
@@bellehogel8665 Po’s father was in Turning Red? 😀 I didn’t know that
My favourite song from the film
Yes I'm so glad you're gonna do hercules it's one of my favorites 😍
I still can't believe Pat Morita voiced the emperor he's played a lot of wise characters
I can't wait for The Lion King... one of my favorites.
Mulan is one of my 3 favourite movies!
This was my favourite Disney movie before watching Wreck it Ralph. This is second best for me now
The spirit of the great stone dragon was inside mulan that's why he never woke up
I love how "make a man out of you" was just Cody smiling and singing along. It was adorable
Civilians were often targeted in warfare because they want to raid them for supplies and valuables. It would also show how terrifying you were and cut your enemies off from the future supplies the civilians could produce.
War has always been a horrible process.
Cody you should watch Mulan 2. It's not perfect but if you just sit back and enjoy it you'll have a fun time.
Another classic Disney Animation movie from the 1990s
I love the BLATANT insult towards Chi-Fu in "A Girl Worth Fighting For"
Chi-Fu: I've a girl back home who's unlike any other
Yao: Yeah, the only girl who'd love him is his mother
X'DDDD
I mean even now, because I'm a girl, I'm 23 and I'm single people still look at and treat me like there is something wrong🤷♀️🤦♀️ family, friends, ect.....and after awhile you start to believe them I guess
I felt this aha
Im just vibing tho 😌🙌😂
Would you like to stay forever? Best line ever
"Whoo! Sign me up for the next war!"
That line had me laughing for a few minutes straight 😂 Gotta love Granny Fa.
I’m actually curious if you’ll react to Mulan 2. A lot of people brush it off as unneeded but I still thought it was cute even if some moments weren’t the greatest
Mulan is from 1998!?!?! I always thought it was early 2000s
This is such a great movie. Mulan is so awesome!
Did u know the emperor was voiced by Pat Morita aka Mr. Miyagi
HELL YEAH!
I would love to get to know you more. You seem like a great person and your personality is wonderful!!!
I strongly agree, Cody. They should make Mulan into a Broadway musical, that and Pocahontas
She did not just save the battalion, but the whole of China by doing that, they were the last defence against the Huns
Grandma Fa is my favorite family member
7:56 I can tell you why I can relate to that song. As a gay man, I always felt like this song really describes what a lot of people in the LGBTQ+ community go through. They're living in this community that primarily only accepts heterosexual people so they feel forced to play someone they're not out of fear that if they don't, they'll let their family down. It's sad how even to this day, it's still an issue. Sorry for that downer lol Just felt like expressing why that song was always so personal to me.
I feel like that’s how I related to it too because I struggled for years before coming out as gay
While I understand Mulan's feeling she kind of messed up there at the end, if she had taken that counsel position it would have Done Wonders for the Women of China
You need to see Disney’s The Great Mouse Detective!
😎
It’s criminally underrated!
This might sound nuts, but there's a theory that the Stone Dragon's spirit went into Mulan, thus giving her the courage to fight in the army.
@@GracemarieJohnson2763 really??? That does sound pretty interesting 😲
23:00 aaaaand since then there are no more songs in the of the movie
The dragon's eyes glowing in the temple symbolizes Mulan's role as the protector of her family awakening, instead of the actual dragon. The reason Mushu couldn't wake the dragon is because the dragon was no longer there. Mulan is implied to be the Great Dragon that protects her family.
I googled it, this was the answer
Actually I Really Love Lea Salonga Sing Refletion
Live Action Mulan reminds me Collin Wing from Iron Fist comics.
35:30 Wow Granny Geeeeezzzz 😆
That line from Grandma Fa had me laughing for 5 minutes straight 😂 🤣
I saw years ago in IRL a post that said the reason the Great Stone Dragon didn't wake was because Mulan was the family's true guardian and when she left she took the dragons sprite with her.
