Fun fact: Mulan’s singing voice is the same as Jasmine’s from Aladdin! Lea Salonga is the only voice actress that can claim to have voiced two Disney “princesses”
I liked the theory, that the spirit of the great dragon went into mulan, while she sat with him. You see his image and reflections in the sequence that followed. So when mushu tried to wake the dragon, it was just a stone statue, because the spirit of the dragon fused with mulan.
That's a cool theory, but it does slightly take away that Mulan would be capable of going on that journey to find her place on her own, which is something I've interpreted as one of the key points of the story, that SHE finds her place despite everything going against her.
One of my favorite things about this movie is how, when the army sees the destruction of the huns (abruptly ending the "Girl Worth Fighting For" song), there are no more musical numbers after that. The movie feels all fun and bright, with the thought of war kind of being in the background. That scene happens, and the characters and viewers are slapped in the face with some reality and, from then on, they...get down to business. XD
Ming Na-Wen, voice of Mulan is the first person to complete the Disney trifecta, with her role as Fennec Shand in Star Wars, and Melinda May in Agents of Shield! AoS is actually my favourite marvel show ever, and in my opinion , is one of the most underrated shows of all time (due to it's slow start) but i am sure you two would love it if you gave it a chance!

“How many men does it take to deliver a message?” _”One.”_ Modern Disney could NEVER achieve this type of tone. Mulan is probably in my top 3 favorite Disney movies of all time.
I always loved the detail that Shan Yu doesn't care that Mulan is a woman nor does he feel any embarrassment that his horde was destroyed by a woman. He only sees her as an enemy soldier. It's worth noting that Huns were surprisingly egalitarian when it came to genders. Although it is strange that the writers picked the Huns as the enemy out of all the central Asian tribes they could've picked, especially since Huns never waged war on China.
There is a theory that the Huns that invaded Europe were direct descendants of the Xiongnu, which did have quite a bit of conflict with China. Although there is no solid evidence in favor of it. Also, the setting of the Chinese legend of Mulan is usually hundreds of years later than the conflicts with the Xiongnu.
Came to the comments to find this! When Shan Yu sees Mulan's hair as it was, his response is merely, "The soldier from the mountains." That's it. There's nothing more to it. Love it!
@PatrickDaviswimiwamwamwazzle I love that they show how well Shan Yu's henchman are trained. When examining the doll, the little details which revealed their enemies' location. But for me, especially Shan Yu answering "Perfect" when told that all of China was made aware of his presence.
One of the best Disney Animated Movies from the Disney Renaissance Era. I still remember like it was yesterday when I watch this in theaters. One of the best movie experiences during my childhood. 😁
Like Holden said, Mulan is a great character because she didn't do anything to prove something, she did it to protect her father and family. That's what is different from modern female characters, now it's all about proving that they're the best just cause they're female.
It's funny that if you showed someone who was educated in China this movie they will laugh at the hair cutting scene. Since about 1000BC no one in China was meant to cut their hair as your body was seen to be given to you by your ancestors and it was taboo to hair your hair. For men it expected to keep your long hair neat by tying it up in a bun at the top. For women there was more variety throughout the dynasties, so ironically, there was more of a chance women would cut their hair compared to men. This tradition ended in the 1600s with the Qing Dynasty as the Manchus invaded China. Their traditional hair style for men was a shaved top and a long queue at the back. In order to maintain control over the lands, they mandated that all Chinese donned this hairstyle, or face execution. Many actually resisted at the cost of their lives due to tradition.
every time I hear "I'll make a man out of you" I think about how my sister played softball for our high school and she was the only one to have played before so every game was just a brutal loss. During warm ups for one game, the other team was blasting music (Lots of teams usually do, and they were home team so it made sense). That song played and as it said "you're the saddest bunch I've ever met" she pointed out to her teammates (not in a spiteful manner, the knew they weren't good by that point lol) But the best soundtracks for Disney movies go to either Brother Bear or Treasure planet for me. Tarzan is good too but I'm not as big of a fan of the story so... But Treasure Planet sound track is done by the lead singer of the Goo Goo Dolls (which I love) and Brother Bear done by Phil Collins ((like Tarzan) Which I love). They're both have the first songs from movies I actually bought. Heck, I bought the whole brother bear soundtrack (only like 3 are mainly/only instrumental)
When Bob Iger inducted Ming Na-Wen as a Disney Legend (same year as RDJ) He stated she is the only person to be a Disney princess (Mulan), in Star Wars (Fenic Shan), and in Marvel (Melinda "The Cavalry" May, in Agents Of Shield) She's a massive Star Wars fan even going to Comic Cons as princess Leia. You guys should react to Agents of Shield it's up with Daredevil as the best Marvel show and Brad Winderbaum Marvel's head of TV and streaming is a fan of the show and says they are looking into reviving or revisiting it after Daredevil. And without events in season 2 Age of Ultron would be VERY different, if it happened at all!
Honestly, as much as I love how sassy Mulan's grandma is, my favorite part of the movie is Yao roasting Chi-Fu in the song "A Girl Worth Fighting For". Chi-Fu: 🎶I've a girl back home who's unlike any other🎶 Yao: 🎶Yeah, the only girl who'd love him is his mother 🎶 Just the look on his face ALONE is priceless. 😆😆🤣🤣
I love Mulan. I grew up watching this movie a lot. Mulan is one of the only animated female Disney character I got attached to growing up, I never really cared for Sleeping Beauty and all those others. I have to say, most men nowadays respond to a strong female role as "woke" but let's grow up people. I like women who are bada$$, not to mention I make some pretty bada$$ female characters in the books I'm writing. Mulan is such an inspiration, so I'm glad to see Jen reacting to the movie.
You wanna know why people (not just men) complain about woke stuff? Compare both Mulans, this one and the live action: this one, Mulan becomes a hero by becoming one from effort and sense of sacrifice; the live action, she was born special and fated to greatness. Guess which one supposedly "anti-woke" people like the most and which one they despise.
@@TimothyMills77 Then don't, don't waste your time. But believe me, no one dislikes this Mulan because it has a strong badass woman.... While that argument was attempted with the live action Remake. It was dumb then, and it is dumb now.
Mulan is the perfect example of a strong female lead character who people can get behind and support. She earned what she was. Flawed, imperfect, but stood for what she believed in and in service to her family. She wasnt a perfect character just cuz she was a woman and had no struggles.
I love Little Brother, most accurate dog depiction in animation. My favorite scene of this is Mushu dressing up as the soldier riding the panda while talking to the high consort, and the panda just climbs the tree. The grandmother was played by Granny from the Looney Tunes.
I have always said Shan-Yu is the best Disney villain. His motives are simple. They are exactly the same as Ursula's from The Little Mermaid. "Oh, you don't want me in your little kingdom? Okay. I'm gonna regret that decision." He doesn't talk too much. You don't have to worry about him monologuing. The man didn't pull some underhanded tactics like Ursula did. He built an army and came on full force. When he stormed the Great Wall he gave them a moment to set the signal, so all of China would be able to put up their best defence. He didn't want to face them while they were unprepared. He wanted a show of force. "Perfect. 😈" Also of note. He RESPECTS his men. Something you don't see in any other Disney Villain in my memory. When the falcon brings the doll to them, he tosses it to his men, because he knows they are smart enough to piece things together without him spelling it out to them. And when the majority of his men die in the avalanche, man is rightfully pissed. And that leads us to the final showdown, and my final point. When Mulan reveals herself as, "The soldier from the mountains," that killed his men. In a society that would have killed her simply for posing as a male to save her father... Does he make a single remark about her being a woman, try to make her feel insignificant? Nah. Dude marks her as his primary enemy, and gives her the fight she deserves. The man is THE Ultimate Disney Villain. And more people need to give the man his due.
Your commentary on hyper individualism vs selflessness is also examined well in Crazy Rich Asians. The film does a good job of not villainizing either philosophy, but instead showing how they differ when it comes to ambition and purpose.
I love 90s Disney!! If Jen hasn't seen Hunchback of Notre Dame and you guys want something a little more adult for a Disney movie that would be a great movie to React to. I think Jen may be surprised by how dark Disney could be
When Mulan’s father drops the sword and sigil to embrace his daughter is one of my favourite scenes of all time. Such a good climax to their relationship dynamic
This really is one of the better (if not THE best) animated Disney movies they made. I also note it is one of the few where the main character isn’t an orphan. The live action adaptation though… woof. (The American one, not the Chinese one)
the live action one destroyed the message...she was just born special. this one, she grows and learns. She starts to do it in the live action one and it's just tossed away, horrible message.
This is one of my all time favorite disney animated movies! I saw this in theaters when I was a kid and I have rewatched it sooooooo many times. I'll never get tired of this movie!
Fun bit for me. My first dog's name was Mushu. At the first visit to the vet, they were like, "oh like mushu pork?" It must have been close to lunch for her to think like that.
I absolutely love Mulan, she is the type of "strong woman" that we want to see more often. This came from a time when "girl power" wasn't all up in your face and putting the other gender down just to prop the woman up, it handled itself with dignity and respect, which is practically non-existent nowadays. Her true power came out when she embraced her femininity, instead of saturating herself in masculine stereotypes to appear strong, modern stuff needs to take a lot of notes from this movie.
Agreed. I also love that she overcomes these challenges not by being physically strong, but by thinking of solutions and plans to overcome those challenges and win battles.
On a technical note, that scene of the Hun army charging down the mountainside was groundbreaking animation -- getting hundreds of characters to move independently.
The lyric "Who is that girl staring right back at me" was referenced in Ms. Marvel. Also, Mulan is voiced by Ming-Na Wen who also played Fenec Shaand in Star Wars The Mandalorian and Agent May in Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.
Mulan helped me transitioned because for a long time, I felt like a man, but I was stuck into a woman's body. She taught me.I can be who I want to be, even if my family doesn't agree.
One of those movies were was around when the marketing was in full gear, saw it in theaters, got the Happy Toys (they were character spinning tops, which i never got to work) owned the VHS when it was new, had the soundtrack (True to your heart by 98 degrees and Stevie Wonder is hits) and it's the movie that got me to pay attention to the previews more, and music videos (because Inspector Gadget was around that time too, and did the same thing for it).
mulan's dad doesn't die though, there's a sequel & he's in it. I don't think he was sick/dying, just badly injured from a past war & wouldn't have survived another.
He states his reason for not killing her is because she saved his life earlier so he owed her a debt. Unless you mean the Xiongnu and I think he just didn't kill her because he didn't succeed at doing so.
Some backstory to mulan. Most militia in china in this era were just farmers. They have their own arms and were expected to fight for their country but have no formal training (generally). In larger families, they have enough funds to train males to wield a weapon and horse riding. As for mulan going in place of her father, I've heard they keep records based on the head of family rather than individuals. Not sure on that though.
Mulan will always be my favorite Disney movie, no matter what. Only the animated one though the live action doesn't exist to me. I feel it was a good movie to those who felt out of place a little, and showed them they'll probably be alright in life.
I was really into Chinese history, maybe still am, and played a role in my college having classes in it. So even though I knew it was a fantasy I remember being a bit annoyed the Emperor says he built the wall as the Emperor who built the wall was a pretty terrible guy IMO. (See "Hero" which even defends him but also kind of indicates how brutal he was.) But it is just a fantasy. And yeah it's great she's not about romance but she's also not about just her own personal empowerment without concern for others. She wants to benefit her father and her people. Some kind of "girlboss" stories now almost imply a woman gaining power is inherently good. But power is a tool do do things. Male or female how you use power, or why you sought it, does matter.
Hercules is such a great film, can’t wait for Disney to absolutely ruin it…we all remember the live action Mulan not being special because she worked hard and used her mind to overcome challenges in raw strength but rather just activate her magic chi powers she has for no reason
Hard disagree- I mean, it’s not as good as The Lion King, Tarzan, Mulan and a couple others but it still far outclasses most of what Disney has been putting out recently (Inside Out 2 is very solid tho). Yeah I can see Megara being that- I identified more with Hercules but they’re both great characters imo
@@BichaeldeAngelo I don't think so. The movie relies a bit too much on 90's pop-culture, Hercules is a pretty weak protagonist and there are some glaring plot holes like why Hades didn't know Hercules was alive if he knows every soul that enters the Underworld or why the Titans were able to overwhelm the entire Greek pantheon if Zeus previously single-handedly defeated them etc.
@@vetarlittorf1807 I sort of agree on the 90s pop culture, though the same criticism could be levied against Robin William’s genie who has a TON of pop culture references and I don’t mind in either case despite some of them flying about my head- I agree with you on some of the inconsistencies though, maybe they would’ve bothered me more if I saw the film as an adult first. Honestly I can’t say I’m objective with that movie, I must’ve watched it 100 times as a kid (I won’t say I’m in love and go the distance are also timeless bangers)
Word of caution, do NOT watch the Disney live-action Mulan. Instead, watch the Chinese live-action version, Mulan: Rise of a Warrior. A far more worthwhile iteration if you decide to.
5:50 Yo, how come I was singing along, too? 😅 But anyways, Mulan is an Excellent movie. Watched it many times growing up. It isnt on the same level as Prince of Egypt. POE is more of an animated epic, Mulan is a near perfect family movie. Apples to better oranges comparison. Still, top 5 Disney movie in my opinion.
I love that you two reacted to this, my favorite Disney princess movie by far. There is a theory I saw and fully believe that says when Mulan decided to go herself right after the reflection song. There is a shot of the dragons eyes lighting up and the grandma wakes up. This was right after Milan was sitting under the dragon. The dragon spirit awoke and is essentially inside Mulan that is why she decided to go. She is the spirit protecting her family, I absolutely love this theory.

@@toshtao1 Nah. If anything, it would be the feminists that would be upset lol
On a technical note, that scene of the Hun army charging down the mountainside was groundbreaking animation -- getting hundreds of characters to move independently.
Next watch Hunchback of Notre Dame! The darkest Disney film, though the Black Cauldron comes pretty close 🙌🏽
I love the transition from I’ll Make a Man Out of You to DVDA for the intro 😂
I feel like what makes a movie such a classic has to be the music. Lots of movies today are just missing that component.
Also, for an Eddie Murphy movie for parents, I recommend daddy day care
For a Disney movie you maybe haven’t watched yet, treasure planet is so dope
There's a girl worth fighting for alright.
The little girl with the doll who didn't survive and all the other children who weren't so unlucky yet.
Your wife has a heart of stone, how did she not burst into tears 😭
The only reason why he didn't kill her was because he knew her father was dying and he knew she was trying to save him
mulan's dad doesn't die though, there's a sequel & he's in it. I don't think he was sick/dying, just badly injured from a past war & wouldn't have survived another.
He states his reason for not killing her is because she saved his life earlier so he owed her a debt. Unless you mean the Xiongnu and I think he just didn't kill her because he didn't succeed at doing so.
I would love to see Holden and Jen do music reactions
Girl don’t worry about him😂😂😂this literally brings back so many nostalgic memories
Yall should watch the nutty professor 1 and 2, the eddie Murphy one
Some backstory to mulan. Most militia in china in this era were just farmers. They have their own arms and were expected to fight for their country but have no formal training (generally). In larger families, they have enough funds to train males to wield a weapon and horse riding. As for mulan going in place of her father, I've heard they keep records based on the head of family rather than individuals. Not sure on that though.
Mulan was my movie growing up. 👍
“The greatest gift and honor is having you for a daughter.”
*sniffels*
Who put these onions here!?
If Jenn wants to watch it again. She should react to the live action version.
and waste her time
12:07 He didn't just cover it. He was the voice for Shang in the Taiwanese and Cantonese dubs.
For another film that doesn't focus on romance, you could always watch Grave of the Fireflies... One of the best animated movies ever made.
"YOU MISSED?!" best line in the movie
My favorite movie of the Disney Renaissance. Also, the legendary Lea Salonga's second Disney princess!
You should check out Mulan: Rise of a Warrior. The beat live action of Mulan.
Any shance for Shogun? :D Fav series made in many years! :D
That cut at 15:30 got me more than it probably should have lol
9:10 he’s a Sith Lord. 17:51 I love how letting her hair down shows she’s a woman when the other soldiers have long hair too.
Jen: *never seen Mulan*
Me: DISHONOR ON YOU! DISHONOR ON YOUR COW!
I got to see this movie and Armageddon on the same day back in 98, great films.
Mulan the best and deadliest Disney princess!! She saved a billion people too!
THERE IS A MULAN PART IN KINGDOM HEARTS 2! YESSSSSS YOU ARE SURROUNDED BY HUNS.
Kingdom Hearts is such a good game!!!!!!!!
It seems likely that the Great Stone Dragon, deep in his multi-century slumber, simply didn't have time to awaken before Mushu randomly murdered him.
I was hoping you guys would do Mulan lol. Has she seen Hercules or would that be on the list in the future?
Hercules is such a great film, can’t wait for Disney to absolutely ruin it…we all remember the live action Mulan not being special because she worked hard and used her mind to overcome challenges in raw strength but rather just activate her magic chi powers she has for no reason
@@BichaeldeAngeloMeh. Hercules is already among the weaker Renaissance movies. Personally I thought Megara was a much better character than Hercules.
Best Disney song OAT 💪
Das Rammstein shirt steht Jen richtig gut :)
Word of caution, do NOT watch the Disney live-action Mulan.
Instead, watch the Chinese live-action version, Mulan: Rise of a Warrior. A far more worthwhile iteration if you decide to.
Ah, 'muricans, the only people who still can light-heartedly wear Rammstein merch. 😅
This was my favorite Disney movie as a kid
All time classic
5:50 Yo, how come I was singing along, too? 😅
But anyways, Mulan is an Excellent movie. Watched it many times growing up. It isnt on the same level as Prince of Egypt. POE is more of an animated epic, Mulan is a near perfect family movie. Apples to better oranges comparison. Still, top 5 Disney movie in my opinion.
Superman: All star for another animated movie. Kick Ass is also a good watch
Hope you all watch The Hunchback of Notre Dame soon. Such a great film.
Absolutely the best one ever
Next the lion king 1994
Love Eddie Murphy
Mulan was my always my other favorite princess after Pocahontas. Still love this movie and the music so much. ❤
Fun fact: The main villain Shan Yu pet falcon actually has a name and it's Hayabusa.
That just means "peregrine falcon" in Japanese
@@benschultz1784 That makes sense. It would be odd for a Hun/Xiungnu to give his bird a Japanese name for no apparent reason.
Greeting from Vietnam you guy !! First time i’ve saw your guy react video is the Inglourious Basterds movie !! So i want to suggesting you guys to reacting to the 2 Guillermo del Toro Hellboy movie, the first one is from 2004 and the 2nd movie is called Hellboy II: The Golden Army =D
Ming-Na Wen was prefect for the voice of Mulan
You should also react to The Little Mermaid(1989)🧜♀️
I loved both Mulan movies I have both live-Action and Animated films on Blue Ray and watch them together!!
This is always my favourite Disney film (Unless Pixar counts, then it's The Incredibles.) So glad Jen enjoyed it. Definitely a great film
If you want to watch the live action, watch the 2009 version.
The BEST Disney animated movie is brother bear. Have the best cast best music best story IMO
facts bruh facts i do hope that they will react to it i know for an fact that jen is going to love it because of the bears
Plz do The Lion King next. Unless you guys have already seen it. All the best to you guys 😊.
We've both seen it, otherwise we definitely would.
@@HoldenHardmando an reaction video to the live action lion king movie🙏
@@HoldenHardman can you guys please react to kung fu panda 4
i also agree mulan is probably the best from 1998
Had to go back so I could listen to the comment of the day because there’s no way mulan is better than prince of Egypt, even as a non religious person that movie is fantastic!
No No Red Star is Wrong! Surf's Up is the Ultimate Animated Movie of All Time!! #1 Guarantee!!
I already love Gen Z Holden 😂
This is a spectacular Movie. One of Disneys best animated !!!
