After "A Girl Worth Fighting For," there are no more songs in the whole movie, which is very unusual for a Disney Movie. The major tone shift happens because they HAD found a girl worth fighting for... the little girl who never got her doll. Amazing writing.
One thing that I *love* so much in this is the chilling cut between them singing "A Girl Worth Fighting For" and coming upon the burnt village and massacred soldiers. It's the meeting point between Disney's typical "upbeat Musical Leads" and literal *war* and *death* . It's the last song in the movie, the overall "feel good this is a Disney Princess movie" vibe is killed in that moment and it's stunning.
Asian porridge isn't like American porridge. Its congee, rice porridge, that is creamy. Raw egg is typically used over white rice or congee, but also cooked.
One of my favorite exchanges is between Mulan and her father “So you’ll die for honor?” “I will die doing what is right” i love that line because it sets up that the father isn’t just doing this because of honor, but because defending his country is the right thing to do that’s a little detail that shows that the father isn’t just obsessed with honor, which he further reveals at the end by telling Mulan that he doesn’t care about the treasures she’s brought back and that it’s an honor to be her father, cause he loves her that much.
Best Disney movie!!!!! Edit: technically if Mulan went home her family’s honor would suffer and she wants to bring honor to her father and family. Her choosing to stay also make the decision her’s were as before she was doing this all for her father. It gives her motivation.
I really like Shan Yu's dynamic with Mulan. They barely interact, but I sense the respect he has for her as a warrior. *sigh* I really hope we get a Mulan musical on Broadway, someday. I'd love more songs, especially if Shan Yu got something as powerful as "Be Prepared" and "Hellfire." And interesting fact: They wanted to make Mulan look less beautiful than other Disney heroines so that she'd easily pass as a man in the army, but I think they failed in the best way possible. "Let's get down to business, to defeat the huns!" Disney did not need to remake this at all. This is a childhood favorite and Shang was prob part of my sexual awakening lol. Plus, he is voiced by BD wong.
They actually gave Mulan the force in the live action. (They called it Chi, but it’s the same thing basically.) funny stuff. The animated movie is amazing and light years ahead of the live action that came two decades later.
I really like that in 'a girl worth fighting for' the music stops suddenly and focuses in on the doll showing that the soldiers did find their girl worth fighting for. The girl whose village was destroyed by war. Very well done.
I thought the reason why Shan Yu’s eyes are yellow is to reflect how animalistic the Huns were perceived. His eyes look like his pet hawk; him and the rest of his soldiers are grey looking, so it emphasizes their otherness.
The little girl who owned the doll was the real “girl worth fighting for” That’s why they jumped from that lighthearted song to harsh reality like that and made sure to show the doll almost immediately after the end of the song 😭
This movie is perfection. Mulan's relationship with her father is a good driver for the plot but then it's about more for her. She constantly shows that her cleverness is her main strength - gets her dog to do a chore, figures out how to retrieve the arrow, aims the explosive at the mountain and so on. In the remake, they destroy or take away all that, I think that's why I get so mad at the remake haha.
As a horse person I can confirm that animators almost never get horses right and despite these being stylized to look like art from the actual period (respect for that move as well) they are probably the most realistic animated horses I've seen. Like the scene with the cavalry departing and most of what Khan does is so good.
I always thought those women picking rice were thinking Mulan was a really shy boy so they thought that's cute. Mulan just looked away from them because she's just not into girls like that. And the fact that when Mulan said,"How about a girl who has a brain and speaks her mind?" And the guys dismissed it.
as a child watching this movie made me feel invincible. i also learned what a country was and that one could actually go to China, my mind was blown away.
I never saw Mulan staying when Shang gave her free pass to leave as wanting to prove a point to a man. She wanted to be good at something, to prove to herself she could do things right
Interestingly, I saw that apparently the reason they cut the song "A Girl Worth Fighting For" off so abruptly there when they arrive is because the soldiers all realize the "girl" they're fighting for: all the "girls" and people in the villages that can't protect themselves.
i think the daisies thing (“they popped out of the snow like daisies”) meant like flowers pop through snow during spring, not that the Huns were daisies lol
I feel like that line might have been redone. my first thought was snowdrops, which are one of the flowers that actually pop out of the snow in late winter. Daisies sounds weird cause from what I know at least, I dont think theres winter blooming daisies. I think they tried some flowers that actually pop out of the snow but decided it wasnt instantly recognizible and went with daisies. Even the visual and sound wise it sounds like it was cut and remashed.
@@VikDraws like when she was offered to go home when she was failing in the army. If she had taken that offer and went home, her family would be dishonored for having an incompetent son. Does that make sense?

I enjoy the fact that Disney took the initiative to follow Asian art style even though it is a Disney production. They didn’t have to put all of their wide-eyed Disney styles on everything. A story with the cultural background needs to hold true to the art style. It just helps to complete the story even if it deviates from some fact.
The emperor is the best part of this movie aside from Mulan and Mushu, especially when Shang and the Hun guy start fighting and he just walks off so casually.
Not sure if someone said this already but I love how they sing "A Girl Worth Fighting For" and they are originally singing it to give them motivation in the form of finding a wife to marry after the war to motivate them to win and survive but then they see the burnt down village and the little doll and they realize the girl that's actually worth fighting for is the little girl who died and they really need to win this war for her and all the other little girls who could die if they don't 😭
19:50 I think the fact she stuck with it despite that free pass to go home is a great turning point for Mulan as a character. She’s realizing in that moment that this isn’t something she did just to save her father, it’s also what she wants for herself; where she can make a difference and prove herself.
Growing up Mulan was my favorite princess because (at the time) she was like the only princess who’s “happy ever after” wasn’t reliant on a man coming to save her from her plight. Like she actually went out and did sht, and kid me loved that (and I still do).

My biggest question about the "Be a Man" scene, when Mulan gets the arrow down. How did she do it. She had no bow. How did it land perfectly at Shangs feet. Also she was so far away and high up. For her to throw it accurately is CRAZY
She probably just threw it and got lucky. You’d be surprised at how much velocity something picks up when you throw it from high up. As for the accuracy tho, Mulan probably just got extremely lucky haha
Ming-Na Wen as Mulan is amazing. She was such a great actress in Mandalorian and Agents of Shield. Crazy my fav Disney princess is also a badass in tv shows I love.
That "porridge" is most likely rice porridge, not the oat ones most of us are familiar with. I started eating rice porridge (congee) because 1. it's really easy to make and it can taste good depending on what you add 2. Mulan
One touch that I love about this movie is that Mulan often self-soothes by playing with her hair, so when she cuts off her hair, she's also cutting off a source of comfort
oh, and I read something in the comments of another mulan video "that girl who died and whos doll they found SHE is the girl worth fighting for becuse no Child should ever haveto die especially not becuse of war, and that´s why mulan leaves her doll beside the helmet ."
a detail that i love about mulan is that it's a musical until they get to the destroyed village, the song doesn't even finish and it suddenly the war becomes something much more real. It is also the last song in the movie.
Mulan is the bravest Disney character, no one can convince me otherwise. Also why does Disney not do ensemble casts more often? This movie had the best side characters in the game, along with Atlantis the Lost Empire.
Some great actors in this movie which is probably why it’s one of my favorites. Pat Morita as The Emperor, George Takei as the Head Ancestor and BD Wong as Shang.
So, dunno if you noticed, but "A Girl Worth Fighting For" is the last song in the movie. The burnt village and the dead army is a huge tone shift and so the rest of the movie basically isn't a musical.
One of my favorite Disney movies for sure! Short story: At the last music festival I went to with one of my friends, some guys at our camping site were playing „I‘ll make man out of you“ (and as far as I remember „circle of life“ from the lion king) everyday out loud singing along at the top of their lungs. Me and my friend singing along as well (though not at the top of our lungs, to shy for that 😂). I absolutely loved it. My everyday highlight at the camping site 😎
Originally in the fire scene in Bambi we were supposed to see a dead hunter - the hand holding onto the gun but clearly dead - as a call back to when his father shows him one near the end of the book, because they've always seen 'man' as a powerful, unstoppable but evil presence and this shows that 'man' is not unstoppable or all-powerful (there's also a scene where one animal gets a little collar from a human who nursed him back to health when he was injured and thought that it meant that no other human would hurt him because of it, he was wrong), but I don't know if they cut that scene because of ratings, graphicness or because it just wouldn't come out right.
I wish the Emperor could be my grandfather not for the money he just seems like an absolutely unbothered badass. Imagine casually walking away from a man threatening you with a sword. Shang was there to stop Shan Yu's sword but like the Emperor said, he's a mountain that doesn't bow to the wind either way.
I love this movie. She worked hard, earned respect, restored honor to her family, and got the guy at the end. Much better than the live action mess that was recently made. When I heard they were going to make the live action version, without singing, I knew it was going to be bad. I also feel bad for the actress in the live action version because people were saying she didn't look Chinese enough even though she is actually Chinese.

And in a way, the desire to prove that she can do something right in this context, kind of negates the strict definition of “family honor” as a motivation, because she’s doing something that could seriously jeopardize her family’s reputation if she’s discovered (and honestly, there is a slight plot hole in that if she distinguishes herself as a war hero, how exactly will that work when she gets back home).
I always felt that she stayed for herself - because she wanted to belong there and wanted to rise to the challenge.
@@kathleenkilmartin5494 and her sticking around turned out to be the best thing, if Mulan had left, the troops would've stayed put, never learning that the General/the Imperial Army failed and are dead, then Shan Yu would've gotten to the City undetected and the rest of China(such as Mulans village and her family) are sitting ducks.

After "A Girl Worth Fighting For," there are no more songs in the whole movie, which is very unusual for a Disney Movie. The major tone shift happens because they HAD found a girl worth fighting for... the little girl who never got her doll.

The Mongolians actually did respect their women more than the chinese. They had women in their armies

@@summerrose8110 ever had oatmeal?
One of my favorite exchanges is between Mulan and her father
“So you’ll die for honor?”
“I will die doing what is right”
i love that line because it sets up that the father isn’t just doing this because of honor, but because defending his country is the right thing to do
that’s a little detail that shows that the father isn’t just obsessed with honor, which he further reveals at the end by telling Mulan that he doesn’t care about the treasures she’s brought back and that it’s an honor to be her father, cause he loves her that much.
Best Disney movie!!!!! Edit: technically if Mulan went home her family’s honor would suffer and she wants to bring honor to her father and family. Her choosing to stay also make the decision her’s were as before she was doing this all for her father. It gives her motivation.
The theory is that the Mongolian leader didn't care if she was a woman because in their society, women were warriors as well.
Things you never thought you’d say “I ATE ASS FOR YOU!”
Idk why y’all aren’t more popular. You crack me up lol
I really like Shan Yu's dynamic with Mulan. They barely interact, but I sense the respect he has for her as a warrior. *sigh* I really hope we get a Mulan musical on Broadway, someday. I'd love more songs, especially if Shan Yu got something as powerful as "Be Prepared" and "Hellfire."
And interesting fact: They wanted to make Mulan look less beautiful than other Disney heroines so that she'd easily pass as a man in the army, but I think they failed in the best way possible. Mulan is beautiful.
Um..... something about that fun fact isnt so fun. What about her features did disney artist think was unattractive
@@aquariussolaris2492 Fair. I think the comment went something like "you can't pass as a man in the army with a Barbie-style figure." Honestly, I don't consider it an insult against any of the DPs, but I can see why that comment could definitely be viewed as hurtful and offensive (like the comment about Anna and Elsa being difficult to draw while still looking pretty, making Pocahontas look more like a model, etc.)
@@OpticalSorcerer yeah, think shes less Barbielike than other Disney princesses and that makes her more beautiful if you ask me. I get the sense of the comment so I wouldnt see it as offensive. They made her less hyperfeminine than usual is probably all it was supposed to say.

I thought the reason why Shan Yu’s eyes are yellow is to reflect how animalistic the Huns were perceived. His eyes look like his pet hawk; him and the rest of his soldiers are grey looking, so it emphasizes their otherness.
I just thought he suffered from jaundice.
There's a deleted scene that shows him literally warging with his falcon, so his eyes show their connection.
I think it's that and the facts he was also probably riddled with diseases
Thank you so much for acknowledging the best line in this - “Dishonor on YOU, dishonor on YOUR COW...” 😆 so good. I have it on a t-shirt.
The little girl who owned the doll was the real “girl worth fighting for”
That’s why they jumped from that lighthearted song to harsh reality like that and made sure to show the doll almost immediately after the end of the song 😭

And the fact that when Mulan said,"How about a girl who has a brain and speaks her mind?" And the guys dismissed it.
I like to believe that mulan was afraid that women could more easily see through her disguise than men and that's why she hid her face.

edit: also all the avatar the last airbender references in this are amazing
I never saw Mulan staying when Shang gave her free pass to leave as wanting to prove a point to a man. She wanted to be good at something, to prove to herself she could do things right
Interestingly, I saw that apparently the reason they cut the song "A Girl Worth Fighting For" off so abruptly there when they arrive is because the soldiers all realize the "girl" they're fighting for: all the "girls" and people in the villages that can't protect themselves.
I love that Lea Salonga is the singing voice for two Disney princesses, Mulan and Jasmine.
i think the daisies thing (“they popped out of the snow like daisies”) meant like flowers pop through snow during spring, not that the Huns were daisies lol

The poridge is a dish called "kongi" it´s a savory rice poridge often paird with raw egg, century egg or pork belly and spring onion.
"The greatest gift and honor is having you for a daughter". That line gets me every time♥️♥️
The emperor is the best part of this movie aside from Mulan and Mushu, especially when Shang and the Hun guy start fighting and he just walks off so casually.
Even when she has been told to "pack up, go home, you're through". She can't because it would still dishonour the family.
The emperor was voiced by Pat Morita, aka Mr. Miyagi

For the longest I never even had a clue as to why that dragon was never awakened. That's a great way of seeing it.
19:50 I think the fact she stuck with it despite that free pass to go home is a great turning point for Mulan as a character. She’s realizing in that moment that this isn’t something she did just to save her father, it’s also what she wants for herself; where she can make a difference and prove herself.
I still got teary-eyed when her father throws the gifts away, kneels down and hugs her
Growing up Mulan was my favorite princess because (at the time) she was like the only princess who’s “happy ever after” wasn’t reliant on a man coming to save her from her plight. Like she actually went out and did sht, and kid me loved that (and I still do).
I Love how Sam was crying laughing with the eating ass coment That was fuckin amazin timing😂🤣

She is friends with a lucky cricket.
Now imagine if she had hit him with it instead...

That giggle fit was magical 🤣🤣🤣
daisies are just known as being one of the first flowers to bloom as winter turns to spring. so they "pop out of the snow"
In NO particular order my top 3 Disney movies are : Mulan, Hercules, and Tarzan. I am sooooooooo fucking happy watching this right now
oh, and I read something in the comments of another mulan video "that girl who died and whos doll they found SHE is the girl worth fighting for becuse no Child should ever haveto die especially not becuse of war, and that´s why mulan leaves her doll beside the helmet ."
a detail that i love about mulan is that it's a musical until they get to the destroyed village, the song doesn't even finish and it suddenly the war becomes something much more real.
Disney legit took a look at their original Mulan, and only paid attention to the outro song as a foundation for the live-action.
Something that I always questioned as a kid is how the hell did the family not realise a big ass dragon statue had disappeared over night 😂
It didn't disappear, it was broken
"His weave has been snatched" 🤣🤣 So much banter; i love it!
When I see yellow eyes I just assume their liver is failing (thanks to House MD😂)
