Shan-Yu was the only one who didn't get shocked at Mulan being a woman. He doesn't doubt her when she says she was the one who sent the cannon to kill his army. He calls her "the soldier from the mountain". Mongolian women weren't looked down on as much as Chinese women. He didn't care that she was a woman.
All these years of watching and loving Mulan since childhood, I never noticed that. Thank you for the fact!! This makes the movie even cooler than it already was 😃
@@timefliesaway999 great man? shan yu??? he had beliefs that align with ours now but that alone doesnt make him a great man lol he massacred a whole damn village
The reason why the Great Stone Dragon didnt wake up is bacause once Mulan took her father's sword and armor she, symbolically, became the guardian of her family.
And the only Disney Princess to get her title from Disney because she performed a great act of heroism, not because she was royalty or married to royalty.
I would argue the most legendary female warrior from all fiction. Mulan is a huge icon beyond just the Disney film, and The Ballad of Mulan is a part of the Chinese school system the way Shakespeare is for the American school system.
The moment the army sees the destroyed village is amazing. They are singing about a girl they believe they are fighting for, one they can pursue romantically. But when they see the ruined village, they are greeted with the truth of war. And at 11:19 they find her, the girl worth fighting for...a little girl too weak to defend herself from the Huns.
12:22 I glad you were paying attention. The war tactics throughout this scene are never noticed. When they’re ambushed, the first person to get shot at it Shang, who is the leader. If you kill the leader, then the rest of the army can be less organized. Next, the Huns are shooting fire arrows at the canons, intentionally trying to destroy them. Once Shang and the group fire their canons at the archers, they only have one canon left. It’s no coincidence that Shan Yu then does a full cavalry charge because he’s confident that Shang’s group wasted their last canons on the archers.
And Mulan got the best of Shan Yu by using the last cannon on the mountain, using the snow as an avalanche to her advantage. Which pissed off Shan Yu even more cause he didn’t think there was any soldier who can outsmart him and his army.
I definitely think Mulan made the more strategic choice to cause the avalanche. Taking out Shan Yu might leave the rest of the army disorganized but probably not enough to keep them from wiping out the entire imperial regiment. And that's assuming the Huns don't have a clear-cut, strict chain of command. They may look rough compared to China's soldiers, but they were successfully making progress through the country, winning battles, and they made it all the way to the capital. That speaks to Shan Yu's leadership, but it also shows how well-disciplined the rest of his soldiers are. Causing the avalanche may not have killed Shan Yu but it got rid of, what? 99% of his army? Kept everyone else in Mulan's regiment alive. It was a bit risky, but damn, if it wasn't badass!
Kinda weird, but I felt like in the scene where they come across the ransacked town, these animators managed to get across the idea of a body-strewn battleground, without drawing any actual bodies. Really haunting.
The thing is there are bodies if you look well. Its funny it took me 16 years to notice them, and a lot of my friends didn't notice either. Our brain self censors
After realizing the destroyed village the song gets cut off and there are no more songs in the movie. I just think that is cool because it shows the severe and serious tone of war.
Fun fact: Mulan’s grandmother is voiced by cartoon voice acting legend June Foray (1917-2017). She had the longest voice acting career in history. She was best known for being the voice of Rocky from Rocky & Bullwinkle, and Granny from every Looney Tunes incarnation, from the original cartoons, to Space Jam, to The Looney Tunes Show. She passed away in 2017, just a few months before what would have been her 100th birthday. Also, the Matchmaker is voiced by Professor Sprout from Harry Potter, and the guy with the checklist is voiced by Mr. Ping from Kung Fu Panda.
Something I rarely see anyone talk about is the directing of this film, which is possibly my favorite part. The opening scene is brilliantly done, the abrupt end to A Girl Worth Fighting For is devastating, and the scene where Shan Yu's men kill the messenger is just *chef's kiss*.
This story is based off an actual Chinese legend. Sadly, this movie didn’t do as well in China because of the way they did Mushu. I still love this movie regardless
There are actually a lot of people in China who like Mushu and there was a lot political behind the scenes factors that made it not do so well there. But yeah many didn't get the american style humor.
11:35 My heart always breaks at this bit. We have no idea if Shang has ever seen the aftermath of a battle before. Even if he has, it still slaps you in the face every time. And then he is told that his father is dead. He accepts the helmet, and goes off by himself to mourn. His soldiers are busy with other things, so he is left undisturbed. Until Mulan comes over to try and comfort him. It's instinct on a female's part. We see someone in pain, and we want to offer what comfort we can. We want to make things better for that person. A burden shared is a burden lightened. But Shang doesn't know that Mulan isn't anything but Ping, a soldier under his command. She wants to comfort him, make things just a bit better...but she winds up denying him the opportunity to fully say good-bye. Because he is the Captain, he has to show a strong front to those under his command, no matter what he is feeling right then. She could no more stand back and watch him mourn alone than she could watch her father leave for war, and he could not deny the men under his command a strong selfless leader. Both are led by an intrinsic part of their personalities, and it results in Shang having to leave much sooner than he needed, and it hurts to watch every single time. I've always wondered if he ever went back afterwards to finish his good-byes, with or without Mulan by his side.

I came across a thing recently that someone wrote about Mushu not being able to awaken the great stone dragon because Mulan had *become* the great stone dragon and it made me oddly gleeful because that was basically what I'd thought way back when I saw this.
It wasn't the cricket that lit the cannon and gave away their position. it was Mushu. He blamed the cricket. Technically, Mushu caused all the troubles, not the cricket.

"We were just admiring the Mudan tree. It's so lovely this year. the blossoms reach fir the sunlight above, while the roots reach for the rainwater below. Sun and rain. So different, yet only by working together do they create harmony and life."
"Teamwork isn't about ego, it's about WE go."
I love Mulan 2! ❤
I love this film! I'm so glad you watched it and you're nearly on 20k! Congrats! :D
Ahhh thank you Jess :D
@@Welchy Of course. :3
If you really love horses in animation, might I suggest you check out Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron. Absolutely beautiful DreamWorks Animation, with a fantastic, moving plot, and a stellar soundtrack. You'll love it.
Would you consider watching 'FernGully: The Last Rainforest' at some point? It's a classic that isn't super well known but it's a good movie. :>
7:31 the sound effect is bowling pins all falling over lol
17:05 it took me way too long to notice Ling's look of confusion to Yao when he pulls out an orange and a banana as his boobs😂😂
You should totally watch The Hunchback of Notre dame. One of Disney's darkest and greatest movies ever
19:03 an emperor bowed to HER of course she has so much honor. in fact, thats kinda why she's included in the Disney Princess franchise: she received the honor of royalty when the emperor bowed to her, do you realize how much honor that means? a lot
"death by fan?"
I'm sorry, have you heard of the Kyoshi warriors?
This is a really great movie. One of the best cinematically made movies in its time.
Also, Man out of You, is the best song in that entire movie.
I love that you are watching those classic 2d disney movies, I recommend to watch Atlantis because it's good and very underrated. Also I think you would like the movies from studio Laika, especially Kubo and the Two Strings, since you mentioned that you love Asian culture and this movie is set in Japan.
u should watch The Emperor's New Groove! :D
I feel so fortunate to have seen movies like this when they first released in theaters. It was so worth it.
YEESS!!!
Thank you for doing Mulan, one of my absolute favorite Disney/Disney Princess movies
I love you and your vids so much❤❤
Have a wonderful day 💫
Ahhh thank you so much 😅 have a wonderful day too!!
Welchy you literally gave me PTSD with that apple alarm sound.
One of my favourite ever movies, this is so funny! Mushu is the best! "You're tiny." "I'm travel sized for your convenience". Hahaha! I love love love this movie!
"Get off the roof, get off the roof, get off the roof!"
Yay its here :D Keep up all the disney reactions 😍 Maybe also some DreamWorks? 👀
Space isn't very far away. You can see lots of things from space. Mapping satellites do it all the time.
That iphone alarm literally scared me 😭😅
9:41 "what a nice bad guy" lol 💜
I love when reactors comment on the hard ass beat when Mulan cuts her hair and bop to I’ll make a man out of you 😂 it sparks great joy
I love how excited you were while watching the movie. Mulan is one of my favorite movies ever. Just one thing (because you’re young): there are hundreds of Asian cultures. So when you say that you like “Asian culture,” try to be specific about which one you’re referring to. 😊Look forward to the next video!
I mean, he could be talking about all Asian culture?? I LOVE Asian culture, but not one in particular they are all really interesting to me. I think that's what he meant.
I am pretty sure he meant all asian culture and didn't want to be narrow minded about it
Great reaction! I’d love to see you watch Hunchback of Notre Dame
I just watched a trailer that made me cry and i clicked on this video and as soon as you’re started talking i started smiling. How does that work? Brain tell me why hearing a scottish accent makes you so happy.
Welchy: uploads new video
Made my entire day just by watching you giggling and laughing uncontrollably.
I love your reactions!😊👍🏻
Thank you Kathy!! 😆😊
I have ridden a Elephant, but have never ridden a horse.
My favorite Disney movie. I've been to each single one with my uncle since Hercules came out in theatres when I was 4, and to this day Mulan is still my favorite Disney Lady. She was so relatable and had such a huge impact on me growing up. Nothing but love for her and this movie ❤
Oh my gosh I remember Flappy Bird and Temple run those games were amazing
When the dad throws the sword aside and just bear hugs Mulan- I litterally start bawling
The Hun army: *appears*
Welchy: .0.
6:26 In The Hunchback of Notre Dame, the evil horse's eyes were white.
I came across a thing recently that someone wrote about Mushu not being able to awaken the great stone dragon because Mulan had *become* the great stone dragon and it made me oddly gleeful because that was basically what I'd thought way back when I saw this.
Lovely reaction! You make me want to watch the movie again :)
This was one of my favourite movies growing up, she is an icon
Live-action remake: *doesn't put Mushu*
Me: Dishonor on you! Dishonor on your remakes!
It wasn't the cricket that lit the cannon and gave away their position. it was Mushu. He blamed the cricket. Technically, Mushu caused all the troubles, not the cricket.
first to say congrats on 20K well done buddy
Yes, in that Era maybe she could have joined a Chinese opera house or something.
