Don't worry, most mythos fans I know enjoy it too. In fact, Hades from the Percy Jackson books website has gone on record saying that he is amused by his portrayal in this movie.
I like to imagine James Woods being lured into the recording studio with Reese's Pieces. "Ooh, a piece of candy... Ooh, a piece of candy... Ooh, a piece of candy..."
Fun Fact: When James Woods was auditioning for the role of Hades, he genuinely thought he would not get the role so he went at it acting like a sleazy car dealership man just for the fun of it. The studio loved it so much the completely rewrote the original idea for Hades in favor of James’ portrayal

My favorite Disney classic. Hades did indeed have his position forced on him by Zeus, mortals just automatically fear a God associated with death. Between that and the way all the other Gods fawn over Zeus and reject Hades he actually qualifies as a sympathetic villain.
The Funny thing is He isn't even the God of Death, That is Thanatos. The Son of the Goddess Nyx (Goddess of the Night). Hades or Pluto is just the God of the Underworld, sometimes also referred to as "Hades". In the actual Greek Myths Hades is usually Neutral and isn't really a force for good or evil.
Hades is another hilarious Disney villain, like Yzma! James Woods’ portrayal of his character is golden, from his fast talking dialogue to his explosive outbursts. It’s awesome that James Woods would reprise his role as Hades in other media as well, like in Kingdom Hearts fro example.😉
Fun Fact: The thing about that Scar pelt is really interesting because the animator of Hercules, Andreas Deja is also responsible for animating Scar in The Lion King. So, that is an excellent Easter egg!

“Does Zeus just naively trust that it’s gonna be okay?” Well remember, Hades is his older brother. Though in this movie the gods tend to act more like coworkers rather than a big (dysfunctional) family.
Have you ever noticed that, when Hercules cut off the Hydra's head for the first time, the moment Hades said: "Relax, it's only halftime" it is actually the halfway point of the movie ??
Oh, she _despised_ him, absolutely loathed. On top of him being the biggest, most well-known mark of Zeus’ constant infidelity (with her being the goddess of _marriage,_ of all and among other things), he was also _actually_ named Heracles, which translated literally to “Glory of Hera”. So…ya know. The irony added even more insult.

And he did choose to rule the Underworld. 6:31 - Here they mixed the Fates with the Gray Sisters. 6:38 - Hades helped defeating the Titans. He wouldn't want to free them. 7:16 - Heracles wasn't a god (he's granted godhood after his death). 8:18 - The parents are the only accurate characters. Alcmene is the real mother though, and there was also a step brother, and Heracles always knew that Zeus was his father. The 2 snakes are a reference to a murder attempt by Hera. 11:46 - People actually loved him because he protected his town. 14:27 - He can. Any god can. 14:38 - Philoctetes was a friend of Heracles, not a trainer and he wasn't a Satyr. Chiron trained Heracles and other heroes but he was a Centaur. What is accurate is that satyrs in Greek mythology would try to chase Nymphs. 16:51 - Heracles is shocked by "THE Argo" but the myth of Jason and the Argonauts didn't happened yet and Heracles was one of the Argonauts!!! 16:59 - Hearcles precedes both Odysseus and Achilles. Phil also mentions Theseus and Perseus while on the disk the Minotaur kills Theseus, but Theseus actually did kill the Minotaur and Perseus succeded as a hero. In fact, there is a constellation of Perseus so Phil's dream is already fullfilled!!! Also, Perseus was son of Zeus too so Phil shouldn't be sceptical. 19:40 - Nessus is the last monster that Heracles defeats, not the first, and Nessus causes Heracles' death. 22:10 - Megara was in fact Heracles first wife but Hera drives Heracles mad so he kills his family, including Megara (this initiates the 12 Labours). Megara has nothing to do with Hades. Heracles doesn't go to the Underworld to reclaim her soul (but he does to reclaim the soul of one of his friend's wife). 22:32 - As the god of the Underworld Hades would know that Heracles was still alive, since he wasn't in the Underworld. 25:14 - IX I I are Roman numbers, not Greek. 25:54 - The context of when Heracles fights Hydra is different. Hydra is not giant, doesn't regrow 3 heads for each one that is cut, it has 9 heads and each head that is cut grows back. And that's not how Heracles kills the Hydra. 28:32 - He captures that ALIVE in one of his labours, he doesn't kill it. 28:46 - He wasn't paid to be a hero. He tried in one of the Labours resulting in that being nullified... 29:17 - Heracles never fights Minotaurs, Gryphons, or Gorgons. Also in that scene he's looking at the Gorgon which would kill him. 30:13 - Trojan war didn't happen yet. 31:33 - It is! And technically Heracles should wear that skin for the rest of the movie since it's what he does in the myth. 33:27 - Nearly all Greek heroes (and Gods) are petty and dishonest. 37:36 - Heracles never gives away his powers. 38:13 - None of those Titans corresponds to mythology and one of them is a Cyclop and Cyclopes actually helped the gods fighting the Titans. 38:48 - As Cody himself realizes, the gods defeated the Titans when they were fewer and weaker so they should beat them now. 41:34 - Heracles never fought the Titans. 42:34 - Taming Cerberus is actually one of Heracles Labours... Aaaand to do that he gets Hades' permission first. 42:46 - The Styx river doesn't kill you, it makes you invincible... That's how Achilles becomes invincible. 43:25 - Heracles becomes a god after his death and he never gave up his godhood. 45:10 - Considering how Aphrodite is depicted in Greek mythology that is not out of the realm of possibilities.
My favorite characters are Hades and Cerberus. The underworld design in this movie is very good and creepy, the underworld itself is one place that no one would want be in, it's to scary.
"Maybe the best thing to do is not to fit in." (Flashes back to Peter Griffin in a clown costume among the Army) "You people are stupid. They're gonna be looking for Army guys."
See, with Disney soundtracks, I've always loved them, but as I've grown older, I've found that which songs I like the most change for almost every movie. For this one, for example, "Won't say I'm in love" used to be my least favourite from this movie. I still liked it, but not a great deal. It is now my absolute favourite from this film
Man this movie was my favorite, Hades is one of the best villains, Danny DeVito as Phil is hilarious, it has a good story about Hercules became mortal and can’t control his strength but you can tell his pain and his life about being separated from the gods and his parents is heartbreaking and compelling, so without a doubt this is one of Disney’s best movies.
I agree with you about Hades Evil Lord of the Underworld Dead on 100%. Especially that he is voiced by James Howard Woods and that he gets a after credits voice over at the end. Hades Evil Lord of the Underworld Dead: What d'ya say? It's happy ending time! Everybody's got a little taste of somethin'm but me! I got nothin'! I'm, I'm here with nothin'! Anybody listenin'? It's like I'm... What am I, an echo or something? Hello? Hello? Am I talking to, what, hyperspace? Hello, it's me! Nobody listens.
15:33 Cody: "You can´t beat Disney music" Me, a life long Disney fan who just went to see the Aladdin musical a few days ago: "AMEN TO THAT!!!!" P.S. Hades is my favorite Disney villain
This is an A + movie, but one has to ignore the original myth almost completely. I love this Hades, he is funny as all heck, but I adore how in the original myths he's not evil. Unlike the gods of death in most cultures.
well he isn't actually the God of death cause that would be Thanatos. Hades is the God of THE dead and the underworld, but your point is correct either way
Honestly, most mythological death gods aren't evil, they're mostly just neutral if not outright good It's just that Christianity has corrupted how we think of the "Underworld" and convinced people that anyone associated with it must be evil
There is some thories that Scar manage to escaped from the Hyenas and leave the Pride Rock. Hercules still training with Phil and went to Africa to fight wild animals, then Scar appears, he saw Hercules and try to eat him. But Hercules manage to defeat Scar and take off his skin and fur, and went back to Greece to training.
Probably my favorite Disney movie ever! And yes the music is incredible! Also, fauns and satyrs and essentially the same. Satyrs are just the Greek version of Fauns. Fauns are Roman.
You were right about two things : Phil is a faun because it's the same creature than the satyr but in roman mythology, and yes, It's Scar. If you remember of the begining of " The Lion King " Zazu says to Mufasa that he sees Scar as a carpet of something like that. Fun fact : the statue of an angel kissing a woman, visible during Meg's song, is a real one called " Psyché and Love " (it's the short title) exposed in the Louvre museum except they don’t kiss each other (I saw it in real) Also, according to the myth, Psyché become a goddess so I don't understand why they don’t do it for Meg. Always about Greek mythology, I think Zeus has no power of the Underworld or the Sea what are Hadès and Poséidon's kingdoms. By the way, these three Gods and Héra (Zeus' wife) are siblings
7:01 Since you mentioned playing God of War, I would like to point out that Josh Keaton (who voiced teenage Hercules) also did the Last Spartan from God of War 2 about a decade later after this film came out. And Rip Torn (Zeus) voiced the smith god Hephaestus in God of War 3.
My absolute favorite part has to be the end scene where Hercules becomes a god, when you see the Thread turns gold, and both the fates confusion and Hades’ fearful panic.
7:25 I think he just never watched Lion King and thought "hey, my brother would never try and take over Olympus. He knows I could whoop his ass." Hades is also my favorite Disney villain.
Hades is the nicest greek god and amongst other pantheon of gods he ranks pretty high up there too. The only terrible thing he has done was kidnap his future wife. Which to his credit he was promised by Zeus and at the end she visited him from time to time in the underworld.
In every appearance of Zeus I've seen, he hurls his Thunder Bolt. In many of his appearances In Greek mythology, he hurls his Thunder Bolt a lot, if you know what I mean.
5:45 While these are supposed to be the Fates, the sharing the eye thing is taken from another Greek myth: The Phorcides. Three sisters that have only one eye and tooth between the three of them.
4:08 You remember, at the beginning of the video, where you almost called Hades "Satan"? Yeah, there's a reason for that. In actual Greek mythology, *all* the gods were self-centered jerks, and Hades was no better or worse than the rest. The idea that the guy upstairs is the good guy and the guy downstairs is the bad guy comes from Christianity. Unfortunately, a lot of Hollywood writers (this isn't limited to just Disney) assume that the average American isn't going to be able to understand a different cultural background, so they took Christianity's Satan, slapped Hades's nametag on him, and called it good.
@@oliwermattsson1478 Hades is the god of the Underworld and the dead. There is a god of death in Greek mythology, the personification of it to be exact, named Thanatos.
Great reaction! I don’t know if you knew this, but they made a stage musical based on the film in 2019. In April 2022, it was announced that a revised version of the musical would play at the Paper Mill Playhouse in Millburn, New Jersey during the 2022-23 season, from February 9 to March 12, 2023. The revised book will be written by Kwame Kwei-Armah and Robert Horn. Casting has yet to be announced.
Fun Fact: Hades is actually the most reasonable and nicest Greek God out of all the pantheon
Of his qualities, honesty stands out mainly.

Hades, is by far my favourite Disney villain. So, glad you enjoyed this just as much as I do, Cody! 😁👍💙
My favorite characters are Hades and Cerberus. The underworld design in this movie is very good and creepy, the underworld itself is one place that no one would want be in, it's to scary.
Fun fact I heard about this movie not that long ago when Hades said we've reached the halfway point it was literally halfway through the movie
"Maybe the best thing to do is not to fit in."
(Flashes back to Peter Griffin in a clown costume among the Army)
"You people are stupid.
31:56
Zazu: "He'd make a very handsome throw rug."
Danny DeVito makes a good Lorax too
I agree with you about Hades Evil Lord of the Underworld Dead on 100%.
15:33 Cody: "You can´t beat Disney music"
Me, a life long Disney fan who just went to see the Aladdin musical a few days ago: "AMEN TO THAT!!!!"
P.S. Hades is my favorite Disney villain
As a fellow Disney fan, I couldn’t agree more. Btw, I saw Aladdin: The Broadway Musical a few years ago. It was great!
Happy 27th Anniversary to Hercules
I am honestly concerned for Narcissus in the future since he eventually becomes a flower in the myth.
@ ItsTotally Cody! 31:41: "He'd make a very handsome throwrug." - Zazu from The Lion King.
This is an A + movie, but one has to ignore the original myth almost completely. I love this Hades, he is funny as all heck, but I adore how in the original myths he's not evil. Unlike the gods of death in most cultures.
Yeah compered to Zeus; he is a saint. He also had the most stable relationship out everyone in Greek Mythology
well he isn't actually the God of death cause that would be Thanatos. Hades is the God of THE dead and the underworld, but your point is correct either way
Honestly, most mythological death gods aren't evil, they're mostly just neutral if not outright good
It's just that Christianity has corrupted how we think of the "Underworld" and convinced people that anyone associated with it must be evil
Love Hades and Adult Hercules. I've loved Greek Mythology since Elementary School...I still do.
I love this movie. And Hades is one of my favorite Disney villain, because I like how he sometimes loses his cool.
I love how much James Woods channels his inner sleazy car salesman for the role of Hades
Was Hercules ever like, "Yo, I don't wanna fight Cerberus"?
I think 'I am retired' in greek is actually 2 words, I believe that's why they made that joke?
Fun Fact: In Greek, the phrase for "I am retired" is in two words!
Which is…ridiculous, since it’s clearly a sight gag that’s actually just the Nemean Lion.
Hermes was voiced by Paul Shaffer and he was in “The David letterman” show.
He was the Skeleton on the Masked Singer and while not a great singer he was still fun and hilarious
Fun fact : the statue of an angel kissing a woman, visible during Meg's song, is a real one called " Psyché and Love " (it's the short title) exposed in the Louvre museum except they don’t kiss each other (I saw it in real)
Also, according to the myth, Psyché become a goddess so I don't understand why they don’t do it for Meg.
Always about Greek mythology, I think Zeus has no power of the Underworld or the Sea what are Hadès and Poséidon's kingdoms. By the way, these three Gods and Héra (Zeus' wife) are siblings
man, the music in this one is so good!! 'I won't say I'm in love' is one of my favorite disney songs
Fun Fact: I was born the same year this movie was released in theaters.
I really like the songs in this one.❤
Hades is one my favorites villains.
Greek mythology nerds on their way to point out every inaccuracy on this movie:
[tough guy finger snapping]
I only watched Hercules once but since kingdom hearts is my favorite franchise and I play it everyday I know the story pretty well
7:01
Since you mentioned playing God of War, I would like to point out that Josh Keaton (who voiced teenage Hercules) also did the Last Spartan from God of War 2 about a decade later after this film came out.
And Rip Torn (Zeus) voiced the smith god Hephaestus in God of War 3.
Josh Keaton was also Peter Parker in Spectacular Spider-Man
The Muses are the best Gospel Choir ever to accompany a hero's journey.
I love this movie, the music, the characters and the fun! All said :)
My absolute favorite part has to be the end scene where Hercules becomes a god, when you see the Thread turns gold, and both the fates confusion and Hades’ fearful panic.
I’m a damsel.
I’m in distress.
I can handle this!
Have a nice day!
PURE SASS😎😎
2:21 sums up every Greek myth and almost every birth of every Greek hero and last Behold the birth of then along came Zeus meme.
5:30. The thread of life comes from Greek mythology that basically; if we die, the thread will be cut.
7:25 I think he just never watched Lion King and thought "hey, my brother would never try and take over Olympus. He knows I could whoop his ass."
Hades is also my favorite Disney villain.
You were sort of right with the Faun. A Faun is basically just the Roman name term for Satyr.
Hades is the nicest greek god and amongst other pantheon of gods he ranks pretty high up there too. The only terrible thing he has done was kidnap his future wife. Which to his credit he was promised by Zeus and at the end she visited him from time to time in the underworld.
I don't think Orpheus is too keen on him
@@kevinsizemore2053 honestly Hades gave the dude a chance its him who managed the f*ck up lol
yup! one of the three most important Gods
31:31
Zazu: He'd make a very handsome throw rug 😏
Yeah the funny thing with scar as a lion suit in this movie, in the lion king zazu said that scar would make a wonderful throw rug. Literally
I can just imagine them making a live action re-make where every cast member is replaced except Danny DeVito.
16:39 - The Greek for "I am retired" is "eίμαι συνταξιούχος", which is two words. XD
In french, it's in five words : " Je suis à la retraite "
31:32-31:57
Is that Scar when Hercules is wearing that you're asking? The answer is... yes. And Scar deserved it for what he has done.
It still surprised me that Rip Thorn was the voice of Zeus!
I thought it was Kenneth but Mars. Zeus sounds like King Triton.
"Don't do it, this is like shaking hands with Bill Cipher"
Glad to see my man has learned from the show
In every appearance of Zeus I've seen, he hurls his Thunder Bolt. In many of his appearances In Greek mythology, he hurls his Thunder Bolt a lot, if you know what I mean.
In my top 3 for Disney movies 💖 Everything about this movie is great
And this is a huge chunk of my childhood!! Thank you so much man!!!😌😌😌😇😇
6:01 Hades: I KNOW YOU KNOW! NOW JUST SHUT UP AND LET ME TALK!
5:45 While these are supposed to be the Fates, the sharing the eye thing is taken from another Greek myth: The Phorcides. Three sisters that have only one eye and tooth between the three of them.
5:14 Hades was totally thinking I’m surrounded by idiots lol
Oh yeah, the movie where Disney made Zeus a loving caring father and Hades an evil villain.
So hades is death
@@oliwermattsson1478 Hades is the god of the Underworld and the dead. There is a god of death in Greek mythology, the personification of it to be exact, named Thanatos.
I like how people are saying this movie is insanely inaccurate(which is true). If it was accurate it wouldn't be a Disney film 💀
Fun Fact about Cerberus, it’s name literally translates to “Spot”.
I recently just watched this for the first time this year and the beginning of it immediately caught my attention I love the muses
I personally like hades but that’s cuz I like villains lol good reaction as always 😀
Yeah, I knew Greek Mythology because of God Of War as well, I love those games, and this movie too
I actually learned a lot about Greek mythology back in high school. Same here bro
The Hydra is DEFINITELY like a hydra, yeah 😂
Cody, I love the way you let your emotions flow and not try to control them, it's so real and it makes a difference, keep it up!
In fact, in mythology, Zeus is an unbalanced, hyperactive pervert. And Hades didn't do anything wrong at all, in my opinion, really.
22:06 - Rabbits aren't rodents, they're lagomorphs. No relation to rodents.
