The real question is… can you USE IT while charging?
Apple Pencil Deactivates when charging
Of course not.
Why though
Its apple it does not allow to do that
@@edd9581broski has been spared of the frustrations of the magic mouse
I mean it is clearly targeted at an education/student sector where the cuts that are made work well alongside the iPad 10th gen. Pressure sensitivity isn’t key in taking digital notes and general navigation which across most disciplines is the main draw card for students but price is the main factor both for individuals and institutions. Given the high number of Apple Pencil alternatives Apple likely felt the need to come out with a lower cost option. With most of those devices they also lack pressure sensitivity so it really is a direct competitor to these devices but an OEM version.
Buying and third party pencil is way more cheaper like $20 with same features
it's obvious that its a stepping stone device that exists to phase out the g1 pencil. It makes a lot of sense and is essentially an Apple branded version of the various 3rd party pencils available on Amazon. i'm phasing out my pro ipad in favor of an ipad mini + macbook pro combo and this new pencil would actually work fine since illustration is the last thing i do with an ipad.
Well you don't need pressure sensitivity if you need to just write stuff. I kinda get it, to cut the price. but better solution is to just get 3rd party ones
That pencil only exist to make Europe happy
Is this the only release from Apple for October? Just about to order an MacBook Pro 14 M2 and if you customize the laptop its 2-3 weeks, but every other Mac apart from the iMac is 2-3days ... the iMac is the same 2-3 weeks as the MacBook Pro 14 /16
This is the true form of Tim's Apple. This supply chain genius is really utilizing all spare parts and systems to create the most convoluted lineup of products in forty years.
“Genius”
The "vision" to turn some leftover phone screens, some lenses, and ipad part leftovers into a $3500 product...
Exactly! When Steve Jobs was in charge stuff was a whole lot simpler, more innovative, less convoluted and he really knew how to make and market great products that were friendly to the average customer. It's a shame that there will never be another Steve Jobs.
Well that may've been pointless, but it's still quite useful for the 10th gen iPad, because as you may know, it only supported the 1st gen Apple Pencil, which required a USB-C to Apple Pencil adaptor to charge.
That still doesn’t make sense bc it’s apple’s own doing that the non-pro newer iPads can only use gen 1 pencils. They could’ve at least made this new one have feature parity with gen 1 for the same price. So now you pay a little bit less for a more convenient charging experience for non-pro iPads but you lose important functionalities like pressure sensitivity. Wth are they thinking. It’s not like you can’t easily get a pencil 1 for $79 or less these days anyway
@@extra4542Yeah, but not everybody wants a stylus with pressure sensitivity. A lot people use an Apple Pencil to jot down notes or mark up papers. If you’re an artist who needs the extra artist features, then get the Gen 2. If you’re a person who doesn’t want to spend the extra money for features you might not even use, then get the USB-C version especially if you have an iPad 10, simple.
@@extra4542iPad Air 4 and 5 support Apple Pencil 2
@@extra4542 this thing is made for clout. Apple doesnt care if it flops, what matters is that people talks about it. And of course, Apple Sheeps will eat this up anyway, It's win-win sitch for them.
Only iPad 10 supports gen 1 pencil of the newer ones. That means that you can choose between a cheaper pencil (USB-C) or a more expensive (2nd gen) pencil if you have Pro 2018 or newer, Air 2020 or 2022, Mini 2021.
Only the 10th generation has the choice between the first gen and the new USB-C model, but if you need pressure sensitivity, wireless charging and double tap, you definitely have at least an iPad Air with a second gen pencil, just as before. But for students, who just want to create notes for the high school / university, the USB-C Pencil is more then enough, you do not need pressure sensitivity for taking notes. This model is a huge thing for iPad 10 owners as now they can use the new, more comfortably designed and magnetically storable product with their product without having to pay more uselessly for a more expensive model like the iPad Air.
apple pencil usb c clearly is targeting students with the removal of pressure sensitivity
perfect
@@doodlydooyt and tbh it was always annoying when i was taking notes, i wouldnt miss it
@@BooleanDevim glad we can agree, this is not for those die-hard artists
And especially for ipad 10 gen
At first it did feel weird to me with the features chart, but after looking at it a bit more it made a little more sense. It’s pretty clear Apple’s targeting the budget audience, and to do that they had to remove all the more advanced features like pressure sensitivity and wireless charging, which need extra internal mechanisms to support. Things like tilt sensitivity and hover probably only require some cheap material in the pencil. Looks weird against the 1st gen but I bet they’ll be discontinuing that soon.
The naming still doesn’t make sense though. Who knows what they were thinking when they named it “usb-c”
Could’ve called it Apple Pencil lite or something? Or Apple Pencil SE? Idk why they opted for “usb-c” eother
Engraving tho? 😂
Sorry but this thing misses the mark. Seriously, I don’t think a budget pencil was really a need. It seems like this adds more drawbacks than features.
This feels like a half hearted attempt at squeezing the rest of the juice out of last weeks lemons.
Yeah, should’ve been called the SE, student edition
I got sold this pencil at best buy but didn’t work went to get it replaced they gave me the 1st gen pencil the long one that you connect directly into the iPad but says “for iPad 10th gen” should I get switched out or it work just fine ? Connect it and seems to work fine was just wondering so I would just keep this version of the pencil instead
It makes perfect sense. They need that area where the iPad charged the pencil for landscape cameras and other things in that area. You jumped the gun here.
My thoughts exactly, along with pressure sensitivity being in the screens now instead of the pencil
Nah…this ain’t it. It wouldn’t be cheaper than the 1st gen and they certainly wouldn’t downgrade the charging experience & feature set if this is meant to be a replacement for the gen 2
@@bdoginit they eliminated the induction charging so the price of the pencil went down. Especially if they want users that already have two pencils laying around to buy another.
They have been wanting to move the cameras to landscape mode for years. The induction charging was in the way. Pay attention.
This will probably make sense when they release the next iPad
Yo Sam!! Power to you getting two vids out in quick succession. Keep up the great work!
Can’t believe the Apple Pencil doesn’t have pressure sensitivity… but added Apple Pencil hover?? Like, keep hover for the flagship Pencil but give us the basic pressure sensitivity!
Wait - I’m confused!!! Just got the iPad 10 and want a pencil to take notes. Any suggestions?
And what about the Logitech Crayon or Zagg Pro Stylus???
Reply
💯! I watched you and Jon’s podcast this past Sunday, and while I don’t particularly care about a new iPad (I’ve got a less than year old smaller pro), as a graphic designer, I’m one of the very few who was actually curiously excited about what a new pencil might bring to the table? No pressure sensitivity, no magnetic charging?!! Feels like a huge regression from a company that usually brings the best innovation to my particular use-case…like…I don’t get it?!! Forget the price drop; these days you can pick up a (used) 2 for that price; I don’t need or desire a “new” version that does less than the 5 year old superior version (I already own)?
Disappointed and confused.
im gonna share my thoughts about why this pencil might be a great insight into what w can expect from future iPads… so maybe they bring back some hybrid form of 3D touch onto iPads within the next year; that would explain the riddance of pressure sensitivity. they might add some extra feature on the iPads where they just dont see the point in using the space of an apple pencil for that technology…AND THEN, the charging… the only explanation i can truly beleive right now is that they bring landscape camera onto all the iPads.. so theyre changing the way we charge the pencils now. tradeoffs have definetly been made. BUT! this pencil may just be them future proofing the pencil from here on out.
I could be wrong here but I think the USB-C version doesn’t offer engravings is probably because where the engraving would usually go is cut off by the cap opening, but I suppose they could move down a little, right? 😅
My dealbreaker is pressure sensitivity. If it was 99 but had pressure sensitivity and everything else stays the same. I would definitely say it’s great deal. AND they should make this new one compatible with all iPads instead of 10th gen and up as a replacement for gen 1
*and double tap. I need double tap.
Just wait for the Apple Pencil usb-c-2-pro-minus-squared!
Could they be moving the technology from the pencil to the iPad itself? Meaning the display would actually do the pressure sensing? This could get them out of the pencil market altogether and still have the feature. It does seem like it’s a huge loss if they just abandon it.
@@DaveGme I feel like that would be more expensive though
@@jemappellemerci not if they’re incorporating a screen that can already do that. And people will accept a price increase in an iPad better than one in a product they don’t use as often.
If this worked on the new iphones I would totally understand this pencil. It would be a great for those who are coming from Samsung phones and want that feature. What a miss. Can't wait to hear you rip this apart on Genius Bar.
I guarantee that Apple is going to discontinue the Apple Pencil 1 & 2 but not before releasing an Apple Pencil Pro that will only work with the Pro models and cost the usual $120-$130 so that there is two options available. The line up is going to look funny until then though 😂
Edit: We could possibly get that AP3 or AP Pro with the next set of new iPad Pro’s
Nah as iPad mini/air uses pencil 2 so it’d have to work with mini/air or keep selling pencil 2. Apple would t force a downgrade on those iPads.
They might drop the one, but that would mean dropping pressure sensitivity for lower end iPads. And that tech for now is built into the screen. So not sure what that means for iPad 11
as someone who's studying chinese i think i'd actually without pressure sensitivity. like know you don't NEED to use the fountain pen style for writing the characters, but it's SO much easier to use that style and it looks SO much nicer
can you use this with the 9th gen iPad if u use and iPhone charger that's usbc to lightning
3:18 are they hinting at a new iPad Air with the front camera moved to the landscape position similar to iPad 10?
Apple needed to release this product for the same reason USB-C is in the iPhone 15. This will probably replace the 1st Gen, at least in the EU.
Why? the law only applies to new products. So they can keep selling all the existing lighting products for rest of time.
@@sly2792004 In a press release, the European Parliament stated clearly that the law will be in place “by autumn 2024.” By this date, all devices covered by the law and sold in the EU will have to use USB-C for wired charging.
Its clearly made to go with Ipad 10th gen , for students and budget audience (still don’t know about hover and engraving 😂). That’s why they didn’t name it Apple Pencil 3 cause its different lineup with usb-c. May be they launch a next gen pencil named “Apple Pencil 3” with the launch of new Ipads.
🙂
So an OEM Logitech Crayon with USB C and Apple aesthetic (and minus the hover on the M2 pros) which is weird because the Crayon is also made by Apple as a low cost alternative for educational markets. Hopefully it has the same “universal” compatibility as the Logitech Crayon or it will be a bust from the get go.
I normally get why Apple does what they do, but why they would do this to their lineup makes no sense to me 😩
I’m guessing because budget iPads and stuff going forward will have USB-C ports so the first one won’t work.
@@destructodisk9074would make more sense to add usbc to pencil 2 and just have one pencil for all ipads, especially with their whole being green nonsense.
@@sly2792004I mean, they kinda did that just with some of the features removed to make a more budget friendly version especially for people who purchase the 10th Gen iPad for children, school, or to jot down notes.
@@sly2792004 so one $129 pro pencil, and nothing for the masses?
@@sly2792004No, it couldn’t make more sense as it’d stay more expensive. And - especially if you aren’t an artist - you would pay +50$ for features you don’t really need at all. Personally, I use it for taking notes at school, pressure sensitivity isn’t a thing for me. I think it is a reasonable compromising to lose some features that are more likely to be simply comfortable than actually needed for such a high price drop in exchange. Losing wireless charging isn’t a big deal when you can charge it from 0 to 100% less than 30 minutes, while it has a really great uptime and you don’t need to charge it after every class.
Now I have Ipad 10 and I was looking for apple pencil but, Apple pencil first genertions it is so unconfortabble because of lightning conection, and second generation it is not compatible so for this reason i bought this new apple pencil and I think this is enough for me, because I just use apple pencil to make notes in pdf, documents etc.
HEAR ME OUT. The new iPads with USBC will be announced in November. The Lightning iPad will be discontinued, along with the lightning pencil. This means that the USBC Apple Pencil will turn into the "lower end" version and the other one will be "higher end"
That’s nice and all but get rid of the pressure sensitivity that the existing “low end” one has? That’s kinda strange
All iPads have usbc. Doubt they drop the iPad 9 though, if they were going to they would have last year. They keep it around until it can’t be updated to a new os. Making it cheaper each year.
Removed the magnetic charging to make space in the new iPads for the camera to be in landscape?
This is basically a replacement for the Logitech crayon. It has the same features and limitations.
For me who draws, I need the pressure sensitive, but if you use it as a pointer only? It’s not really needed. You just need the lines not to wobble while writing.
I think it’s mostly a companion to the iPad 10, but for people that don’t draw it’s an official cheaper alternative it’s also good.
It’s honestly a no news item.
wait if the logitech crayon basically does the same things, isn't it like 10 bucks cheaper? Whats the actual point of this now?
Without pressure sensitivity just get a 35 dollars Baseus pencil, that even charges magnetically, or a 25 bucks jamjake that don't charge magnetically but does all the other things, both don't support pressure as well, but are cheaper, have good battery, are well built, and also use usb c, it just makes more sense.
I bought the Apple Pencil 2nd generation for college and I’m glad I didn’t go with the cheaper option.
I heard that they have an Apple Pencil 3rd generation coming out soon. I don’t know for sure. I’m ok with the one I got and I don’t have time to wait for a new one.
Attach magnetically without charging is like eating a sandwich with the wrapper still on
When I read "attaches magnetically for storage" I first thought that means it has some kind of usb stick functionality (like real storage) what would be kinda cool, but nope...
The Apple Pencil 2nd gen has the sensitivity though. As a designer doing away using my Wacom Tablet.
amazon has pencils with the same exact feature set as the apple pencil usbc and same functionality but for 20 dollars
it is the exact same pencil just a different shell and wayyy cheaper and more worth it
Looks alarming like a replacement design so they can move the camera in the next iPad Pro. It’s said that there would be a problem with doin* that and retain the pencil charging as it is.
Thank you so very much for your content I really appreciate it ❤😊 I feel you n maybe that’s why I don’t have one rn 😢
Thks. When Nov 23 ?
I feel you man. Price is the only way distinguish now.
Sounds like an Apple Pencil SE, a “budget” option for college kids or parents wanting to get a cheaper alternative for kids.
Still, a very questionable direction in what features they cut.
i personally use apple pencil dupes, and i dont really care about pressure sensitivity and i dont care about not being able to charge it wirelessly and i think they are trying to make their products more accessible which i like
So what’s the point of the lightning Apple Pencil? The only reason I can think of is for people with older iPads, but you could just get a used one or something in that case…right?
Typed that before the post-outro but still 😂
It's for notes. It's obviously a substitute for the Logitech pencil which has roughly the same features, everything an apple pen has except for pressure sensitivity.
They probably went, why give Logitech the profits, and made this product.
Last year the October releases were over like 2-3 days so maybe that will happen again this year with the iPads being announced later in the month or maybe even the week. Or maybe Sam is right and it won’t be till November
Is it a better option for the iPad (10th Gen)?
This makes perfect sense. The logitech crayon is $10 cheaper with basically the same feature set. I have it and I would still get it saving $10.
Another move by Tim Cook to have products at all price points even if it means taking away great features just to make it different
The Zagg pro stylus has that design where the charging port is embedded in the upper tip of the pencil
When it comes to pressure sensitivity I beg to differ. I think that the iPad overall is heavily marketed towards students and note taking and so pressure sensitivity itself becomes less of a concern. I think this Apple Pencil was much needed as a cheaper alternative to the 2nd generation one for taking notes and making quick sketches especially for students who aren’t on a tight budget. As for the hover feature i think thats more a feature of the screens on the iPad rather than of the Apple Pencil itself, since you can’t use hover on older iPad Pros with the same pencil.
Pressures sensitive is very important for a good handwriting experience, so I beg to differ here. This product is pointless.
I agree one reason being pressure sensitivity isn’t a completely needed feature on the Apple Pencil which is one reason that Apple removed it from this cheaper option. And since pressure sensitivity is a feature that cost more to place into the pencil it helps cut cost which helps the students that it is intended for afford it. We must also think of the other removed features as well they are expensive and to cut cost Apple made the most sense to remove the more expensive parts which again helps with affordability.
it sucks for people who write in Japanese/Chinese that need that pressure difference
@@esausantibanez3702 why do you need pressure sensitivity for simply writing notes? I don't think that needs to be a thing at all. I like this new pencil, it gives a cheap option for those who only need a pencil for writing and basic things, with the benefit of magnetic attachment to the iPad. And I will add, if you want all the other features then buy the other pencil. It's that simple. People bitch and complain about a product like they are forced to buy it. It's there for those who want it, if you don't then move on.
@@lenajk2004 then buy the other pencil....you're not forced to buy this one. WTF
3:35 The hover function is not just for any iPad Pro either… but solely for the lastest iPad Pro M2
One statement is not true, the 1st gen apple pencil had an adapter in the box, since day 1, to charge it with a lightning cable.
You only had to pair to an ipad by plug it into an ipad.
So many ppl just overlooked, my friend only new when she complained to me that it’s so awkward to charge it and she said she may buy a new ipad pro to use the new pencil.
I told her to use the adapter to charge your pencil, it’s in the box, she got a new ipad pro anyway as her ipad isn’t getting any updates anymore.
TBF it’s Apple’s fault mostly for “hiding” that adapter in the box and most ppl don’t expect Apple to include adapters anyway.
I thought it would have double tap, but it just doesnt. Why would it not have that even though it has the flat side?? What is the flat side even for??? And having wireless charging and connecting, it doesnt have pressure sensitivity? First i thought if it would work if you connect a usb-c to lightning cable to the pencil and ipad 9th gen but i’d rather keep my logitech crayon.
It’s identical to pencil two shape so it can snap on to iPads with square off shape. Course every time you grab it to use it’ll be dead.
I unfortunately bought it without seeing this
I was wondering why I can’t use it unless plugged 😔
thats because they dont want to sell it just give you a reason to upgrade to buy the second gen the most expensive one the same reason they sell the iphone SE that no one buys but makes you upgrade
The newly released Apple Pencil is for those who have a Generation 2 device and a 10th Generation iPad. This not a bad idea. If you have both iPads, you can use one for basic Apple Pencil use.
I didn't think the charging design could get worse than for the 1st gen, yet here we are.
I have the 1st gen stylus and I love it. Oh…and I have the 12.9inch 2nd gen I pad pro-works great.
Steve Jobs would have never let this happen… we’d simply be on pencil 3 and it would work with everything they currently sell. Simple as that.
well if this is the case, better just buy the third party one, maybe miss the pressure sensitivity, and minus hover function
at least it supports all USB-C ipads like the air, mini and the pro too. Also if no new ipads this whole year it doesnt really matter for me anyways, its mostly minor upgrades, tbh if no new ipads next year also im okay with that. The current ipads are powerful enough just get rid of the ipad 9th gen and reduce the price of the 10th gen. Pro and the Air, tbh for Air jumping from M1 to M2 is soooo minor might as well not release it for couple of years just up the base storage to 128gb is enough.
Here’s my theory about the Apple Pencil USB-c …. It was supposed to come out earlier….. but Apple still had so much stock of the the Apple Pencil 1 that they spent the r&d to make a usbc-lightning so that the 10th Gen iPad would use the Apple Pencil 1 instead of the budget Apple Pencil which has USB C
I forgot I even had one.
4:20
I posted a long thread on X about how every Apple product line can be streamlined to SE, Air, Pro branding for consistency. In this case, the new Apple Pencil should be “Apple Pencil SE” and the 2nd Gen should be “Apple Pencil Pro”. 1st Gen should be discontinued at this point.
I think they are phasing out the original Apple Pencil 1st gen due to the new usb c law. They probably had to offer a new option and will have to discontinue the first generation soon.
Ever thought that this pencil might be compatible with the iPhone 16, yet to be released. So they’ve done away with some key features to make it compatible with the iPhone?
How much can a pressure sensor really cost,
Think of this… even a regular wooden pencil has pressure sensitivity 🤯 good job apple
4:50 seems like his apple UltraProMaxfan Meter is going down
When are the iPads coming?
So an OEM Logitech Crayon with USB C and Apple aesthetic which is weird because the Crayon is also made by Apple as a low cost alternative for educational markets. Hopefully it has the same “universal” compatibility as the Logitech Crayon or it will be a bust from the get go.
and the 1st don’t need cable to connect
It makes sense (only) for ipad 10. But I would get one if got a 10.
The waiting is when is the apple pen pro coming with magnetic charging and 1 or 2 other gimmicky things
😅😂 I got a good laugh especially the ending
Which ipads does it work with, or is it an iphone Apple pencil because that is so needed, samsung been doing this for ages and it works
Any of the new squared off iPads. They list all of them on site.
Why didn't they just make the 1st gen apple pencil lightning to usb-c ? it retains the old school design but you have the pressure sensitivity. I think it makes more sense than that
That’s crazy it’s got the hover feature. That’s definitely a software limitation made by apple to get you to get the m2 iPad. What a slap in the face it would help my productivity so much for editing photos but they already lied and said the new processor is why it can do hover support but that’s already been debunked.
i cannot wait to pre-order mine
No pressure sensitivity? Why? That's the only reason why I want to buy the apple pencil 2
Losing features but maybe there will be a pro pen version?
Atleast you can charge it with your new iPhone if the iPad is low
i think it was made to be able to use when charging
I feel like this is just there to fix that the Apple Pencil 2 doesn’t work for iPad 10 so this one does and it attaches just like the pencil 2 and the iPad 10 is a “budget” iPad so it’s a “budget” pen
This is one of the most bizarre things they’ve ever done as a company. I legitimately think it’s a troll
Watching this now.. I feel the reason apple has removed wireless in the newest pencil.. is because this next iPad may have a landscape camera, so placing wireless charging would be difficult.
I wish Apple 2nd gen had deep sleep like hibernate and doesn't kill the battery. I dislike that my Apple Pencil 2 zeros out on the batter when it's not attached to my iPad Pro.
I think this Apple Pencil USB-C is the update to the lightning plug-in pencil lol
Add $19 for a USB-C charge cable (that’s not included in the box), and you’re now at the same price as the 1st-gen. Plus you’ve got to carry that charge cable with you now, just in case the pencil dies or is un-paired for any reason. Not worth all the hassle to save $50 IMO.
Well you will use it on an iPad that comes with a cable. I don't think anyone would need to buy a second cable
Love your unbiased stuff Sam ❤
Apple is like The Old Grey Mare it ain’t what it used to be!!!!
Thanks Sam great work
This one supposed to have wireless charging I heard if so u could just sit it on any wireless charging pad to charge
2:19 The reason for which I’m watching this video, because the one time I buy something without researching and watching reviews it bites me in the ass! Just got it today, opened it and was like wtf?! 😑 I’m returning it and getting the 2nd gen since my brand new iPad Pro doesn’t support my 1st gen 6-year old pencil which still works and looks like new! 😑
Also, that chart made me realize who this is for; it’s for students and businesses. Cheap and does the job plus is more “disposable” than the $99 and $129 options with added features they won’t need.
This is so disappointing, the Apple pencil has Excellent performance but it definitely needs an upgrade.
I lost my apple pencil 2, a year ago and I found it last month but turns out that if you don't charge it constantly the Battery dies so my only option is to buy another one..... you'd think, something that costs 129$ would have a better battery.
People try to defend it by saying you don’t need the features being removed for tasks as a student, but then why not just by a 3rd party stylus?
Here’s my question that wasn’t addressed in the video…does this cheaper Apple Pencil work with every single iPad? If yes then the issue lies in them keeping the gen1 Apple Pencil
I would’ve said that this is the replacement for the first gen. But. The lack of pressure is weird.
This pencil makes so much sense. I don’t understand why people are confused. This is the new pencil that will phase out the old 1st gen pencil moving forward. Base model iPads will use this, and plenty of people will be happy to be able to do light sketching and notes. Meanwhile, pros will buy the better pencil and the better iPad.
The new iPads will probably come out in November,
AND the Apple Pencil 1 will be discontinued eventually… when they are all sold out…
Leaving us with Apple Pencil 2 and the lower end usbc version.
Perhaps Apple Pencil 2 will be upgraded to version 3 in the near future as well.
