WHY PAY MORE? Apple Pencil 1 vs 2

- Is the 2nd Generation Apple Pencil THAT MUCH better than the 1st Generation Apple Pencil? I get so many questions about whether there is enough of a difference between the first and second generation Apple Pencils - and the answer is - it depends. Because, the 2nd gen pencil IS better, but the question should be, is it better enough to justify the extra cost. Now, when we look at the price, at least in the US, the difference is $30, but when you look closer it ends up being much more expensive - so how do you choose?

I was confused wheather or not to spend extra money just because of the pencil but you really helped me work that out.
I'm super glad this was useful!
@@TechGearTalk which app or website u use for wallpapers? Plz reply
You brought out very detailed comparisons! I’ve seen a few other videos and they have helped me make my decision in my recent apple purchase. I bought the Apple Air 4 and the 2nd Generation Pencil, one of the reasons being as you mentioned they are the only compatible options. I want to avoid losing and damaging my pencil, therefore the 2nd Generation Pencil is the safest option! Lol I also bought the Logitech case, using your same logic (pun intended 😂) I enjoy your content and hope you are well this year!
@@mhz6500 you can choose those wallpapers in settings they are default wallpapers
@@tsanayasharalI used to lose my pencil a;l the time now I have a pro and it stays there but the problem is I always try to use scribble because it’s fun and then end up angry at the universe because it can read my goofy handwriting
What i like the most about this channel is that you actually say which is better and why, when others channels go with the "Both good, pick whatever you want and thanks for wasting 30mins of your life"
Keep up the great content!
😂😂
Pencil 2 by all means. Its user experience is significantly better than the first version over a long period of use. The biggest advantage is ability to charge/pair magnetically and just the overall feel of it is so much better
What kind of comparison is this? They don't work with the same iPads so the comparison between "which one to get" is so strange.
If you have an iPad Mini (6th gen), Pro 12,9" (3rd or newer), Pro 11" or Air (4th or newer) you have to get the Apple Pencil gen 2. Any other iPad and you have to get Apple Pencil gen 1.
I wish I could get it but I can’t because I have an iPad from 2019 ( I think 10.5 iPad Pro)
@@Rendovesyou have to get the Apple Pencil gen 1
after watch the vid, yeah, overall that is the only to point difference. looks like pencil 2 is better
2nd gen way better charging magnetically, also gets damaged less easily (can’t roll off the table) and no parts to lose. These factors don’t justify the crazy price. I’d love to have 2 Pencils (one on mini and one on Pro) but not at that price. I used to have 2 of the gen 1 pencil due to the need to charge it separately. If/when they bring out a Pencil that works on iPhone, I’m there.
Thank you for adding your insight Jeanne
Well should I get 1st gen because my sister and mom have those ones so they have chargers
@@CindyLouHouVille 1st gen is only compatible with older iPads - you need to check which one works with the iPad you have.
@@jeannedarc1566 ohhhhhhh
I’ve had my iPad Pro 9.7 with my 1st Gen Apple Pencil for years and just due to nostalgia I’m not ready to upgrade yet.
I agree with the charging problem, my pencil never seems to be charged when I want it, especially since I only have one charger for both my iPad and my iPhone.
And for now I don’t actually need to upgrade, it’s still good enough for me as my iPad still runs iPadOS 15 and I’m not doing anything completely professional on my iPad just yet.(Just studying, note taking, taking photos, drawing and of course binge watching UA-cam videos)
I also went to my local Apple Store a couple of months ago and tried out the 2nd Gen Apple Pencil. It felt literally JUST LIKE A REAL PENCIL and I don’t remember it making the annoying glass tap sound I hear every single time I put the pencil on my iPad.
I love your videos. Very informative and snappy! Keep up the good work.
Fantastic video. Thanks for helping clarify what I'm looking for.
Now that you’ve narrowed down my choices (awesome! Thank you!), do you recommend that I use a screen protector? I’m a snob for resolution and clarity, but I don’t want to sacrifice my screen either… I’ve also seen that they sell tips as well, but I think I would rather go tipless. What is your suggestion?
Great video that helped me decide. But what I really appreciated were all the Cleveland shots between Playhouse Square and The Arcade! :)
I have both pencils but prefer the second generation way more over the first because of not only the feel and the double feature and being able to charge on the side of my iPad Air 4 but for the fact that it is so much easier for me to keep track of I loose things so easily plus when I am out and about I can fit it in my purse alongside my iPad and I have a much better drawing experience
I subscribed I’m a fan
You can charge the 1st Gen pencil with your iPhone also and no need to pair with your iPad again, as iPhone is just charging and not pairing
Appreciate you sharing
Buy it nice or buy it twice -- so true! Another concern for people is whether they are buying old tech that will go obsolete... Once apple stops producing iPad series (as in 9 gen) then the Apple pen 1st gen will also become obsolete. I am thinking the Apple Pen 1st gen only makes sense if getting it super cheap 2nd hand
I bought the 1st Gen shortly after the 8th Gen was the latest iPad.. I still have it and don’t really plan on updating anytime soon
Well played, the 10th gen still uses the gen 1 pencil
Excellently presented !
Currently have an iPad 9 which has been working well! I have a ZAGG folio keyboard case which is nice because of the magnets in the case. The little cap on my Pencil attaches to my case by magnets and the Pencil itself stays in the little loop thing while it charges. I have multiple cords so I use one to charge my iPad and the other always has the adapter on so I don’t lose it.
Overall, I’d still say the 2nd gen Pencil is better due to its other benefits but the 1st gen is working out fine for me. I plan on upgrading soon enough and giving my current iPad to my dad so I’ll be getting the 2nd gen Pencil soon enough which will be nice for the added benefits. However, I am *NOT* saying the 1st gen is bad. It just depends on what you have.
Very thorough video! Thank you
Simply put, Compatibility and what you're willing to pay dictates what Apple Pencil you will be getting. Good video!
Great video! Very helpful🙌
Your videos are very helpful. Since the battery is important to me, I bought the ipad 9, which is a price performance product. Definitely enough for now, continue until the new pro is introduced.
Great to hear! CONGRATS on the new iPad 9!!!
Hey! We have the same thinking process cause I did the same. I am waiting for the new Pro.
I actually like drawing with the first gen pencil more because it's lighter, the 2nd one was more tiring to use when drawing. Ofc the wireless charging and magnetic connector is much more convenient to use
Ur fat
The first Pencil is definitely heavier than the second lmao
@@casperghost1467Lol
The screen thing bugged me on the Fujitsu I had long before the Apple Pen became a thing. So I definitely know now which tablet and pen I'm saving up for. Thanks!
I’m a video creator and a 3D model creator and I have used both and I preferred the first gen
Sorry for the late comment but can you explain me why? I don't have much budget so I'm trying to decide what to buy lol
The only problem I have with the Apple Pencil 1 is the glossy texture, and not because it’s uncomfortable to hold but because it gets chipped easily and sweaty; dirty. I already have a chip in it and I have no idea what from.
That flat edge was a game changer! Would it attach to the side of the iPad Pro 10.5” as well? Great video as always, man. Cheers!
And in case my comment with the link got auto-rejected, just Google “Apple Pencil compatibility” and you’ll find a page for it on Apple’s website.
No. You don’t get to pick which one you want. If you get the flat side ones you can only use the 2nd gen while if you get the base iPad you can only use the 1st gen
@@DimitrisSartzetakis Thanks
Found a way to make 1st gen pencil work on the new ipads that are supposedly compatible only with the 2nd gen and going to continue using it that way. I’d love the 2nd gen pencil but I’m not paying 130$ for a new one when the old one works still.
I’d love to learn how you figured that out! I’d like to avoid buying 2nd gen apple pencil since I already have the 1st gen
I believe an App Store app called “Le blue” (looks like a fist in blue background) will help. I just watched a UA-cam video on another channel on it. Worked in the channel, but haven’t tried in RL yet.
App called lightblue
I had the gen 1 and It was amazing, but once I got the air 4 I thought about upgrading. I waited until black friday and got a gen 2 for $90 which is how much I paid for the first gen. So, I bought it and sold my gen 1 for about 75 bucks.
where did you buy it?
I love your new thumbnails and editing! keep up the good work!

After watching your videos I got the iPad 9 Wi-Fi 256gb to replace my iPad Pro 9.7 also of 256gb. Where can I get the wallpapers you have on your iPads? Thanks
As an owner of the Apple Pencil 1 who's been using tablet PCs for years (and digital pens long before Apple finally realized it would be a good idea to create one for iPad), all of this just shows to me that Apple still doesn't understand inking.
One question I’m fine with charging it in my iPad and all the other stuff you posted but with drawing on procreate would I be able to do the same as anyone using the Apple Pencil #2
1st gen is about $70 right now but kinda waiting to see if there's a gen 3 coming soon
Are there any different functions like pressure and/or angle sensitivity?
Thankfully, it really comes down to what device you are using. I can confirm everything that was said in this video. I started with the 2012 Mini and the 1st gen pencil, now I use the M1 Pro and 2nd generation pencil for my digital art.
I appreciate the feedback and input Jim!

Fourth way to charge Apple Pencil Gen 1… Get a stand which sits on your desk that you plug it into vertically. Don't know why folks never mention this.
That was a great explanation👏😃 Thank You very much for the video 👍😃🇨🇦

Hi, thank you for your comparison. I have an old (2nd generation) 12.9" iPadPro and I am looking for a stylus to start doing sketches using Procreate.... What would you recommend as an alternative to the pricey Apple 1 pencil? (Sadly the Apple 2 pencil is NOT compatible with 2nd gen iPadPro. Thank you again. I appreciate your help.
Really, useful a video
Didn’t know the iPad 12.9 wasn’t compatible with 1st gen. This video was perfect before for before I hit check out
Are there any keyboards with a trackpad for the iPad Pro 12,9" 2nd Gen?
But can you force the Apple Pen 2 to draw on the iPad 10.2?
The cal bit for the first generation is so tru xD both me and my grandma lost our cap months ago and it’s never been seen again 😂
Which is better for learning drawing and animation? Apple iPad Air or regular iPad?
Great video thank you
Glad you enjoyed it. Thank you for being part of the channel!
On point. Tx
Doesn't the 1st gen pencil also work on iPad Mini 5?
Hey What’s the cheapest iPad option for the pencil 2? Thanks in advanc, I been looking and everything is like 350 plus
It’s not even a matter of if I want to pay a few dollars more, it’s all about the compatibility of the pencil depending on the device I have. I would 100% go for the 2nd gen, but for that I have to buy an iPad Pro or an Air, no thanks
Good review man
I appreciate it! Thank you for being part of the channel!
Yes I’m in a budget so that’s why I got the first pencil and iPad 9th. Maybe later the pencil 2 and different iPad.
Using 3rd party app BLE Scanner, the easy to lose lighting adapter and lighting to USB c cable I have managed to pair my 1st Gen pencil to the 2021 IPad pro 12.9. So far I have had no issues when using it with Good notes and swiping between apps.
I will eventually update to the 2nd Gen, but thought for those who cant justify the extra spend right now, is a good to know tip.
Does the Pencil 1 have pressure sensitivity if you pair it using BLE Scanner?
For me double tap is more a con than a pro. I turned off after 1 week because I always tapped it accidentaly and started to erase when i wanted to write something. :D
I appreciate you sharing.
Same it keeps breaking my workflow
Wish it had a mechanical button instead of touch activation
Can I buy a Ipad air 4 in this time of year??
Hi mate. Will you consider making a video between Logitech Crayon vs Apple Pencil 1 vs Apple Pencil 2?
They are pretty much the same, the only difference is design, no pressure sensitivity on the crayon or angle.
Great video
Glad you enjoyed it. Thank you for the kind words and for being part of the community 🙏🏻
does anyone know if the apple pencil generation 2 is compatible with the ipad 10th generation ?
Is it worth getting a class a pencil?
I hate my Apple Pencil 1 but just can't afford to upgrade my ipad and pencil. But this video is so in-depth I might have to consider upgrading.
Largely depends on your device! If I understood it correctly the 1st gen doesn’t work on the later iPads and the gen2 does ‘t work on the earlier devices.
What’s the pencil 1 charger adapter called?
I own an iPad Air 3rd Gen without a pencil. I wanted to upgrade to a Pro and dive into the “pencil world” but rumors say an OLED iPad is coming in 2024. So I guess the smart choice should be to delay my upgrade and get the pencil 1 for my current iPad.
You can charge both iPad and 1 generation pencil at the same time by if you have two apple wire things and the have two adapters you can charge both of those just like how I can
Even though this comparison is really high quality and professional, it’s useless. No iPad has dual 1st and 2nd generation Apple Pencil support, meaning you wouldn’t be able to choose between the two if you get an iPad; you’d be stuck with one.
I have the ipad air and did not buy the apple pencil. I bought a stylus pen compatible with my ipad at Amazon. I'm not an artist nor a student and mostly use the ipad for media consumption. Maybe after a year, I'll think again if i would need to buy the apple pencil 2 😅.
How do you charge the 2nd gen pencil or the iPad is always in a case? (Looking to get one for my child).
I'm a little confused by the question. I always have the 2nd gen pencil charging on the side of the ipad. The cases that are designed for those iPads, are designed in a way that allows for it. Hope that helps.
Recently i upgraded my ipad from 9 to air 5 and i managed to connect apple pencil gen 1 to the air 5
if you get the magic keyboard, use an eyeglass cloth (you need one to wipe off the screen regularly anyway). Tuck one side between the ipad pro and the magnetic surface it attaches to. Then put the pencil in place, flip the loose bit of eyeglass cloth over the pencil, close the keyboard, and you have a long, secure flap to hold the pencil, as well as a handy cloth to wipe away the fingerprints all over your screen.
Honestly wish these were cross compatible among the ipad models, the 2nd gen pencil is so much better but i can only afford the ipad 9
Me too - but I don't know how they would make it pair and charge
I really want the 2nd generation but my iPad is ipad 8 so the 2nd generation don’t work on my ipad
I have the ipad 9 and accidentally bought the 2nd gen pencil and I'm so bummed that I can't use it with the ipad
Can apple pencil 1st gen be magnetically attached on the side of ipad 9? I'm not talking about charging only attachment....grt video btw
Thank you 🙏🏻. Unfortunately, no - it cannot.
Awesome I rarely use the pencil so not spending on the new one!
My problem: I have an old iPad and I don’t think the second gen would work with it. Btw I use a first gen Apple Pencil and I have a gen 6 iPad..l
I have a 3rd party charger that has a place for the cap and is not easy to lose
I am using first generation on iPad pro 2020
This was very helpful, I will buy the 2nd gen. Thank you.
I only paid 88 for the 2 gen it was on sale for cyber Monday
My iPad 9 doesn’t support the 2nd :(
Really want the 2nd one but it isn’t compatible to my ipad haha
It’s stupid that the gen 2 pen won’t work with a 10th gen iPad. It’s just a way for them to get you to spend even more money. 😮
Is it possible to get a replacement lightening cap for thre first generation Apple pencil?
Yes. There are a tone of them on amazon. I bought this one amzn.to/3LW45jF
does Apple pencil second gen support ipad pro 12.9" second gen??
Please let me know!!
There should be a link in the description - but I believe that’s still 1st gen Pencil.
What about the iPad 10? Is the pencil 2 compatible?
Unfortunately no. Just first Gen.
Pencil first gen is compatible with ipad mini (5th generation) and ipad (6th generation and up)

He did expand on that in another video, but basically what he was saying is it’s easy for someone to bump it and snap it off.
That’s only if you charge it from the iPad itself. If you use the piece it comes with, that won’t happen
