As an Addict in Recovery, I interpret this song as a conversation between the addictive mind and the rational mind. It's an on going battle knowing there is a addiction problem that needs to stop and the addiction telling you need me & its hopeless to try and live a clean and sober life.
The addiction never ends...we can only live clean one day at a time, one hour at a time, one minute at a time.

Prayer? Just throw a coin in a wishing well it's the same thing. People in aa anoy me with their preachy nonsense. They swap one addiction for another they go from a substance abuse issue to being addicted to meetings, coffee, and doughnuts. What annoys me the most is the whole "bigger power" nonsense and how they try to tell you that you need something bigger and stronger than yourself to get clean and it's not true. I quit with the help of suboxone and tapering off them in about 3 weeks I was fine. I was doing at least 5 Roxy 30s a day among other things for years. The only thing I need was to believe in myself and that I could do it. I tried aa but after about 4 meetings I seen the cult like behavior and never went back.

Maynard always plays a character on stage. Usually he sings in the back ground vs front center.
Funny story, I worked medical on a tool concert. Some folks walked in backstage. One guy was holding a yorkie pup and Of course I started baby talking the pup and said thanks for letting me

Little known factoid about Maynard: he's a US Veteran, didn't see any combat but he excelled and did so well in Basic, AIT school, etc that he was offered by the Dept of the Army, a full rice scholarship to the most prestigious military school on the planet, that being Westpoint...he turned it down to pursue a career in music....even though I'm an Army combat vet, I think he chose wisely...🤘🏻🇺🇸

He didn't excel in the military, didn't like all the mindless rules, and he only saw it as a means to an end. Also, as a vet, you should know how to correctly spell West Point. This is the song that started it all for me. 1992 I was in the Marines deployed overseas. While I was in the Persian gulf in 1991 my Father passed away. The war was actually over by then and I could come home But my Father was no longer there. I felt very guilty because I had not seen him for 9 months and i was distant as a teenager because my parents were divorced and I lived with my Mom. Anyway when i got home i went in to a deep depression and all I could do was drink it away. I drank a 5th a day of whatever I could get my hands on. Been struggling with alcohol my whole life. Now i am just getting too old to do it. This song was perfect for me back then and been a Tool fan ever since.

The deal with Maynard's persona onstage is that he's always suffered from severe performance anxiety and he hates crowds.
I saw TOOL live 3 times back in this era and Maynard never blinked his eyes once the entire time. The only way for him to get through these early shows with the band was to "shut his eyes off" and crawl inside his own head during their sets.
He looks at the crowd, but he wasn't actually seeing anyone.
There are numerous instances of him playing entire sets with his side band "A Perfect Circle" with his back to the audience. To this day this is why Maynard hides at the back of the stage with minimal lighting on him.

As a recovering addict, this songs speaks to me on soo many levels. 'I want, what I want' is a cry for help, not a demand. Addiction is no joke, you know it's killing you, but withdrawl is not fun and cold-turkey can kill you.
Just having that which you need to not feel like you are dying, is what I feel Maynard explains so well when he says 'I will find the center of you, chew it up and leave'. It a moment when the pain of existing is gone, but it will hurt you in the end - and you be that to the people you love. You'll find the center of people, take from them and then leave - not because you want to, but because you have to. If you read this, then learn one thing from me - just dont. It's far better to talk to someone, then it is to try and dull whatever pain you have with a substance.

Nowdays Maynard stands on a pedestal at the back of the stage, in the shadow of the band so to speak. This song and this kind of live shows from Tool gives me chills, for a lot of reasons.
I love to tell this story #mylife
    First:
I discovered Tool live, in a very little stage (about 1000 people), they were the opening band, so nobody knew (it was in France), they were opening for a band called Fishbone.
You were not even born I guess, it was the 1st October of 1993. This moment changed my life.
I thought to myself: well, I'm going to watch 1 or 2 songs from the opening band and go for a beer.
Most of the people was not yet arrived or at the bar.
So you can guess we were maybe 200 or 300 people.
I was just at the stage, 1 meter from them and as soon as they started, the silence was insane: everybody here could feel something very special was happening.
Sober was the 3rd song of the set. I was in a dream, I can't explain what , but I felt this moment was something that I would remember my whole life.... you cant see me, but I told this story a lot of times and each time (even now as I'm writing, i got goosebumps).
It was the first bass player (Paul D'amour), and some people in the crowed wanted more "Rock", but most of pêople, like me were stunned, hypnotized.
Fun fact: at this period I had long black hair, and look like Adam Jones (guitar player) so, after the show someone in the bar told me: "hey!! your band was nice! you're great guitarist"...thinking it was me.
hahaha I wish it was true, ....but I don't play guitar.
    Second thing:
You asked if Maynard acts just for the show like this, yes, especially for this song, Maynard got a lot of talents, and he likes to play, he doesn't sings, he IS the song.
One example: if you see him with Tool, A Perfect Circle or Puscifer, he acts and have different looks, just like it's a different guy (especially outfits and wigs).
Tool is something really special, Maynard is not a singer for Tool, Dany is not a drummer, Adam is not a guitar player and Justin not a bassist: they are all pieces of puzzles, of something above music.
    third thing:
This video (pro shot) is very rare, because Tool say that their show is something special you have to live, that's why they never did neither a live album nor a live dvd. A liveshow from Tool is something you have to feel so it's impossible to capture it.
    fourth thing:
Even more rare because (for all the reasons I said before) Maynard is never in front of the scene, it was only at the beginning of the band, but since the second tour, he's always back, near the drums. frontmen "are" Adam and Justin, well, just to insisty ther is no frontman, there is a band: Tool.
I'm sorry for this long post, I'm sorry for my (very) bad english, but Tool, that day I saw them, change my life, really, I wouldn't be the guy I am today if I didn't live this show and especially that moment with "Sober".
That's why I can't just watch and not comment.
(ti be honnest it's maybe the first time I make a comment on your channel even if I watch a lot of your reaction as I'm a Tool, Rammstein and Nightwish fan.
    Thanks for the chills.

"Maynard is an artistic genius" You hit the nail on the head there Aileen, not only a method performer, but he is indeed a musical genius, Sober is emotional and powerful, a story of those who suffer with addiction, I shed a tear every time I listen to this song as I feel for my father who is an alcoholic. Much respect to you for feeling the emotion of the song.

My Dad played drums in tons of different bands and I remember stumbling on one of his burned CDs for practices and it had Sober on it. MJK is a strange cat especially at live shows. I’ve seen tool multiple times and he is rarely out front and sometimes he’s straight up not visible. His preforming style while out front is very immersive with the lyrics of each individual song they play. As time went on he chose to not be out front bc he sees himself as not a front man but another instrument in the band…. With that said every performance is top notch and his mysterious presence only adds to the genius of the band

    • @plantdesigns7889
      @plantdesigns7889 2 роки тому +1

The only other front man I can think of that gets this immersive is Joe Cocker. Very animated and could almost make you feel uncomfortable at times. I'll add, Mike Patton could also fit in that category.
