Maynard really resented the fact that he was expected to have a stage presence so he kind of had an “anti stage presence” presence. But meanwhile his anti stage presence became captivating lol
Anti stage presence has its charms. Iconic jazz trumpeter, Miles Davis, would play with his back to the audience! When you're brilliant, it still works.
He still does it to this day. Went to perfect circle live this last tour and he was on a platform (pedestal?) in the back that was dark the majority of the time. It would only get light enough to see him when the vocals were the major focus. You can tell he really loves the music of his band and wants to make sure people are focusing on the amazing work they are doing, because it is really easy to just lose yourself focusing on his voice.
Imoten Vashak Did he tell you this himself, or are you trying to defend the fact that he’s a shitty performer who hates his fans, borderline psychotic, and is extremely overrated?

I stumbled across this video as i am an avid watcher of reaction vids. Especially when you reactors do Tool. You talk about his stage presence. Kasey Brown yeah dude. Stage fright sucks, I’m the same way, after getting past the ball in throat and nervousness you explode. Usually I start off on one knee or near sitting cause makes it easier to breathe past the anxiety of eyes staring at you.
you've got a journey of wonders ahead of you if you choose to listen to tool :) Maynard is a true artist, a performer who lives and breathes the words. he suffers from stage fright so for the last 15-20 years he's always been in the back of the stage in the shadows...
@SylentEcho from what ive heard he does that because he doesn't want to be the main focus of the shows, he wants the actual music and every member of the band to be as important as he is since tool is a full musical experience
Great review!! Check out his other band called "A Perfect Circle". Song called "Judith" It's about his christian mother becoming confined to a wheelchair. Great song. Very powerful, you might dig it.
I love when vocal coaches see tool. The impressive thing Maynard does that few know is that....how impressive he belts out his voice in that posture! Seriously, his posture shouldn't allow that voice! Its absolutely astounding
Maynard is in 2 other bands as well A Perfect Circle and Puscifer. You should react to A Perfect Circle perform 3 Libras on The Tonight Show from the early 00's.
Wasn't Dave also in A Perfect Circle? I am confused, maybe, but I thought that somebody was in Circle that was also in Foo Fighters or such of the ilk. (?)
@@TheClassicWorld Not Dave Grohl. I'm not aware of any Foo Fighters who have been in APC. Although APC had a few different Bass players from Twiggy Ramirez(Manson's band) to Paz Lenchantin.
I find it funny how coaches can/have to break down specifics of how awesome Maynard is while us Tool fans have just known it instinctively for almost 30 years. This guys put on one of the best live shows I've ever seen in my life. Even if you are hammered yourself he can pull you into that intensity along with him.
FIRST OF ALL TOOL IS NOT A POP MUSIC BAND THEY ARE A PROGRESSIVE ROCK BAND AND MAYNARD IS ONE OF THE MOST TALENTED SINGERS AND SONG WRITERS EVER, NO DRUGS AT ALL. HE JUST FEELS THE MUSIC, AND WHAT COMES OUT OF HIS MOUTH IS JUST AMAZING. THEY ARE ABOUT TO RELEASE A NEW ALBUM, IT HAS BEEN 13 YEARS SINCE THERE LAST AND EVEY TOOL FAN IS BESIDE THEMSELVES WITH JOY RIGHT NOW
An extra factor to consider when watching this: at the time, Maynard was dealing with severe anxiety and huge stage fright. Add that to his connection with the lyrics and its unbelievable
Great video!!! Yeah, Maynard's intensity is really amazing and adds a lot to the performance. The only other example of singing like this that I know is Van Morrison's performance of "cyprus Avenue" in Dublin back in the 70's. for long stretches, he's so oblivious to the audience that you feel like you're spying on him...
It was performance, meant to imitate the robotic, kind of jittery and shaky way a drug addict would, when going through withdrawal. That's why he's making all of those crazy movements and stuff. Its meant to instill that feeling of helplessness and fever and all that that comes with getting clean.
Lol no. He's performed like this countless times for many different songs in the early-late 90's. Man you guys post comments like they're hard facts lmao. Also, if you even try to reference the Genius.com lyric meaning, then that's ridiculous. It's the wikipedia of lyric websites. I can literally go on there and say the song was written about a walrus, get a few thumbs up and boom.
@@bdub0983 Subject/proof of what? Look up literally any live performance from 92-2000.. He's doing the movement. I made no claim as so why he did it. So what the hell are you asking for when you say you want proof? LMAO. Where's your proof? Since you seem to have the hard facts.

Thank you for mentioning not that you shouldn't do it in this posture if you're a master, but that it's difficult. Posture is something I think enough people know about, but as Picasso said it, "Learn the rules like a pro, so you can break them like an artist." Sam Johnson touched on this, but I'm glad someone saw the skill in it rather than the "breaking the rules" even if they say ", well he proves you can." Beth Roars wasn't bad, but other than that, many of them went way too into detail about normally proper posture even if they still admired it's skill, we all know, that's a given. As a fan, these songs, I have studied every aspect of them(, I already know what he's doing, but I love seeing professionals have joy brought to their faces and share in revisiting that first admiration of talent that bring artists close to each other's hearts. I also love to see my understandings comfirmed by professionals :p P.S Forgive me, but given your age I assumed you would be close-minded. Thank you for your unbiased view as an artist, that ALONE earned my sub. BTW, He had extreme stage fright and used his method performing as a cover. I'd love a reply if you get the chance!
Every vocal coach says the same about his posture))) As for other Tool songs I really enjoy Pneuma and Schism. The lyrics have deep, esotherical meaning
Had this song new on tape. He is known to have huge stage fright and is either onstage in costume or barely seen at all live. You got most of it correct though. What you are seeing is a massive love for what he is seeing an internalization. I pay attention to all of his ''projects'.
Much like everyone else here, im down a "vocal coach reacts to Tool sober 1993" rabbit hole. and at this point, i feel like i gotta bring up a point another vocal coach said about Maynards performance, and how its "theater". Its not an unusual stage presence, its an act. the intensity, the contortion in his body, its all a show.

many performers made up a "character" to appear as on stage to combat stage fright. Singer of R.E.M is another one, part of him wearing costumes and painting his face was combating stage fright
lead singer Maynard has a two more bands, A Perfect Circle and Puscifer. I highly recommend The Package by APC or Autumn by Puscifer. His style and range are completely different and beautiful.
I like that you didn’t assume he was drunk or on drugs, like how the hell could anyone sing like that if they were. You recognized that this was supposed to be visual and didn’t speak ignorantly.👍
The song is about addiction , the awkward posture is kind of a visual aide in identifying the the protaginist (?) is going through a soul wrenching time .
he really looks into his emotions, and he draws from them. Chris Cornell was another with that internal fire of emotions to draw from. both excellent performers. Maynard had a few bands, so check out all of them. I really enjoy orestes.

I just finally saw Tool for the first time... The most amazing show ever.
"Oh my gosh!" she says.
Yes.
Great review!! Check out his other band called "A Perfect Circle". Song called "Judith" It's about his christian mother becoming confined to a wheelchair. Great song. Very powerful, you might dig it.
Judith was about his mother but it was Maynard's reaction to what he viewed as Christianity's betrayal of her.
Some other shows he uses even more crazy postures while singing.
Maynard and the rest of the guys are amazing , on or off stage , you'll be hard pressed to find a harder working more down to earth guy than Maynard.
I've watched 3 or 4 of these videos, and they all talk about the emotion Maynard puts into his music
@@TheClassicWorld Maybe you are thinking of James Iha on Rhythm guitar? He is in Smashing Pumpkins as well.
@@matthewd6306 Not sure! Will have to look into it. I may have been thinking of the guy from Manson's band?
@@matthewd6306 Yep. I was thinking of Twiggy. Sorry for the confusion, haha.
THEY ARE ABOUT TO RELEASE A NEW ALBUM, IT HAS BEEN 13 YEARS SINCE THERE LAST AND EVEY TOOL FAN IS BESIDE THEMSELVES WITH JOY RIGHT NOW
Lita Wells “No drugs at all” misinformed?
An extra factor to consider when watching this: at the time, Maynard was dealing with severe anxiety and huge stage fright. Add that to his connection with the lyrics and its unbelievable
Even watching his performance on a small box in the corner I still got teary eyed over it. After all these years.
I love it when people find TOOL for the first time brings a smile to my face
Alice in Chains LOVE HATE LOVE LIVE AT THE MOORE THEATRE PLEASEEEEEEE
One of the best live vocals ever, Layne cand never be replaced!
Great suggestion!
Ticks and leeches..
3 Libras... Two polar opposites
Go hard
rodeo 4 very good advice
It was performance, meant to imitate the robotic, kind of jittery and shaky way a drug addict would, when going through withdrawal. That's why he's making all of those crazy movements and stuff. Its meant to instill that feeling of helplessness and fever and all that that comes with getting clean.
And he did it marvelously
@@bradylasserre9320 so you are the subject matter expert huh? Gimme a source, or some proof.
@@bdub0983 Subject/proof of what? Look up literally any live performance from 92-2000.. He's doing the movement.
I made no claim as so why he did it. So what the hell are you asking for when you say you want proof? LMAO.
Where's your proof? Since you seem to have the hard facts.
@@bradylasserre9320 you're telling me that my INTERPRETATION was wrong. It's you who needs to prove my own interpretation is incorrect for one reason or another. Not just "trust me, I know tool bruh"
Ive watched a few of these they all have the same reaction to the second chorus Maynard is the best
I also love how those guitar chords hit like a sledgehammer.
React to Mike Patton live any will do but his cover of I started a joke originally by the begees is great!
Great reaction! 👏👏 Some genuine thoughts to a great version of the song.
Seen these vocal coach reacts to tool’s sober vids where they discover Tool for the first time. Makes me wanna say Hi! Welcome to the world of music! Even though it’s their career.lol. Can’t imagine a music selection without Tool. I’m sure they could prolly turn me onto some music I’ve never heard too.
You got to check out Mike Patton. He has many many bands so should be easy to find an option. Was tested as having largest vocal range of any rock singer.
I also love to see my understandings comfirmed by professionals :p
P.S Forgive me, but given your age I assumed you would be close-minded. Thank you for your unbiased view as an artist, that ALONE earned my sub. BTW, He had extreme stage fright and used his method performing as a cover. I'd love a reply if you get the chance!
Such an amazing performance I could watch it over and over which I saw it live
Tool is pure magic
Every vocal coach says the same about his posture)))
As for other Tool songs I really enjoy Pneuma and Schism. The lyrics have deep, esotherical meaning
so many great songs from these guys, and everybody just reacts to this one.
Maynard is the lead singer of three bands. Tool, A Perfect Circle, and Puscifer. Please react to By and Down the River by A Perfect Circle live at Red Rocks. Absolutely outstanding vocal performance. Loved your reaction to this video and the respect you gave it. Subbed.
An amazing front man with a brotherhood behind him.
He has anxiety when he performs live. He _needs_ to be in his bubble and to not see the crowd. The moment he sees the crowd he's in hell.
lonewaer this.
I have seen him live several times, he often performed at the back of the stage facing away from the crowd.
many performers made up a "character" to appear as on stage to combat stage fright.
Singer of R.E.M is another one, part of him wearing costumes and painting his face was combating stage fright
Bullshit, its cos he sees the music as more important and doesnt want to take away from it. With puscifer and apc hes in front of stage all the time.
he *ONCE HAD* stage fright. to assume he isn't way past it by the time he's performing in front of this crowd is ludicrous.
Tool - Pushit(Salival) is probably one of my favorite live performance's by tool ever. They have a live album version.
lead singer Maynard has a two more bands, A Perfect Circle and Puscifer.
Coheed and cambria welcome home live pleasant surprise it would be . Claudio sanchez has some voice
You couldn't help but rock out. Awesome!
The song is about addiction , the awkward posture is kind of a visual aide in identifying the the protaginist (?) is going through a soul wrenching time .
Everything tool puts out is Deep like so deep.
he really looks into his emotions, and he draws from them. Chris Cornell was another with that internal fire of emotions to draw from. both excellent performers. Maynard had a few bands, so check out all of them. I really enjoy orestes.
Yas Chris Cornell is the best.
Nobody can say he doesn't sing with huge amounts of passion.
You just got bit by the Maynard/T00L bug...your subs will skyrocket if you keep going
Just saw them a week ago. First show of the tour. Caught 2 new songs. Played a lot of classics.
Always spot on!
@@GP-yc2it i was at the second show and that was two weeks ago?........
I think his lyrics come from some personal experiences and/or deep thought. Amazing!
For more Tool:
Schism
Right in Two
Parabol/Parabola
Vicarious
Wings for Marie (pt 1) & 10,000 Days (Wings pt 2)
Jambi, the pot, and the grudge too
I would go with hooker with a penis, one of the best straight up FU songs out there. P
LOVE HATE LOVE BY ALICE IN CHAINS “LIVE” IN SEATTLE, MUST MUST ANALYZE. MIND BLOWING VOCALS!
When you’re a mere mortal, a bent over posture makes it difficult to sing........ But when you’re a musical God it is so easy! Her hair was completely black at the beginning of the video......and by the end of the song Maynard drained the blackness out and she’s now gray!
🤣
Chester from Linkin Park sings the same way hunched over yet their voices are incredible RIP Cherster Bennington ! You are so missed.....
Beautiful reaction video ... thank you
