Excellent question from Jeff Wilson. As an England fan I think the thing we can all agree on is that every team wants to beat the All Blacks and will bring their very best game. The remarkable thing about the All Blacks teams of the past was how they were always able to find a way to win even against very good teams playing at their very best. For some teams like Ireland, that air of invincibility the All Blacks carried is probably gone. 3 wins against the All Blacks in recent years is unprecedented for Ireland.

Invincibility is mythical if you want to look at rugby history in the last four decades then we can all realise that the ABs lose sometimes at the critical moment when we're all set for a win being the case in World cup semi finals
Then we are left with France England, Aussie and the Boks marching on 'bugger" but still they'll retake remake win and lose and come back to the top again.Recently beaten once by Argentina and then lately by two strong northern hemisphere rugby sides....A timely reminder that the most successful franchise must always be prepared for improvement and regrowth apart from national mourning sad finger pointing and further losses be assured it's not the end of the AB legacy

I can understand your point, but that is not tha kind of fatigue that is implied here. They are athletes that push the limits of what a human body can do, and as for all sports, pushing human body that hard is not healthy. But if there were not for the violence of the matches, it would be fine. But when equaly trained monsters do that kind of impacts again and again, your body start to break, bit by bit. It's might not be a brokent bone, but joints will suffer, muscle will have litle damage that will pile on. At the end of a season, thoses guys have so much litles pain everywhere that it reflect on their performances innevitably.
I'm not using it as an excuse for the NZ loss. I'm French, and I'm glad to see my team win against the mighty ABs. But denying that thoses professionnal player pile on fatigue at the end of a season cause "they play one match a week and live a luxury life" is a serious denial in my opinion.

Jeff Wilson hit the nail on the head and he doesn't even know it. He spoke about the adversity that McCaw, Nonu, Conrad and Ben Smith and Carter went through and he is not wrong there; where he is wrong, is in the assumption that Ioane brothers, Havili, Mounga, Bridge, etc will ever be in that league. Having lost those players just after RWC 2015, the AB's have never successfully replaced them and that is a huge problem for them. Losing Read, Franks, etc after 2019 didn't help either.

The South African team spent months in a covid-secure bubble and the ABs experienced nothing like that, and yet the springboks end this year holding the world top spot and with a more successful end of year tour than any other southern hemisphere team. JK can talk about fatigue when NZ face the mental and physical stress of being in a covid bubble. If the springboks can do it then why not the ABs? The key thing none of the pundits discussed is how we are being smashed at ruck time. We're having to send in more players to secure ball, we often fail to do so getting turned over a fair amount and when have secured ball it's often slow. If we don't have quick ball, we can't do anything with it. I'm not sure if this is a technical thing, a player thing, a problem with attacking patterns and inability to win the collisions, or all of the above or something else. But it's really noticeable that having clean, quick ball has been an issue since McCaw and Kaino retired.

For me as an England fan I always expect to lose a game or two if we tour major SH teams in our summer. These tours are really hard for the tourists and what these Autumn internationals show is that the gap between NH teams and SH teams is much closer than its ever been collectively before. The ABs are just used to winning these games at a canter and this time they were caught out. I'm a little surprised that they lost to France by a greater margin than they lost to Ireland, but then France are arguably a better team - its just I always expect to see the ABs come straight back after a loss. Overall, I just don't think there is that much to worry about from an AB standpoint. They will come home, rest, reflect, learn and improve - because they are ABs. But its undeniable that whilst the ABs and SA will go into the WC as favourites, teams like France, Ireland and England are able to beat anyone in a single game.

NZRU are at fault here - they completely messed this up! The NZRU wanted Jamie Joseph and Tony Brown as the coaching staff to takeover the ABs! Japan got wind of this and made an offer to Joseph just as the 2019 RWC started - it was an offer he could not refuse! The NZRU found out what Japan Rugby did and sat back and did nothing because they thought Joseph would be loyal and go with the ABs - they thought they would wait till the end of the RWC and make the approach then!
This is why we have Foster as the coach!
What I find problematic is that when the AB coach is under review due to contract ending, the standard procedure is to review and choose at the END of the season so that they can review the total season. This is the first time I have ever seen the NZRU address the review in the middle of the season for a AB coach on the end of his contract! The process also involves the advertisement of the role and the opportunity for other coaches to apply - did not hear any of this during this particular process!
Unfortunately we are stuck with Foster as the AB coach till 2023! We will not get past the quarter-finals unless something drastically changes!

I must say I respectfully disagree with everyone saying the kiwis are making excuses / ignoring how good the French were. They are simply examining where it went wrong from an NZ perspective (which they are entitled to do), i.e. looking at the controlable factors rather than the opposition in the context of building for the world cup. This is what they've always done and I believe it's a big part of their success. They focus on themselves and their own game.

Comment from the NH, nothing wrong with the skills here, but need to spend a bit more time watching 6N games, this was all on display this Spring. England have had to evolve to deal with fast line speed, evolve their attack format and deal with heavy, direct packs. South Africa were unbelievably good at Twickenham. Ireland were almost unrecognizable in attack, a complete evolution and that French team has been playing like that or trying to get to that game plan for two 6N seasons, they have the odd quite match, but if you think the ABs are tired, try playing a French season - and for the first time they can dress two teams as good as the one on display last week.
The skills level on display of the AB's remains incredible as is the depth. The heart in their jersey in the French game, and the drive that produced the pick and go in the second half and the defensive effort against Ireland was incredible. But the attacking game plan is 70% kick away the ball and counterattack ... this used to be one very small part of an AB game, but its almost like that's all there was. From the NH, we may regret that the ABs got taught this lesson 2 years out, but then again, all of our teams will get better between now and RWC and our coaching is getting much better. There really was some good rugby with different styles, pitted against each other, but Andy Farrel and Eddie seem to have found something, the French had it already and when it matters the Welsh will come together. There's a bit of nonsense in this about SH summer tours ... they come after Club and ERC finals and are a time to experiment for NH teams.

Every time the All Blacks struggle it's the same culprits putting us under pressure: rushing defence and a predictable attack. It's been that way probably since 2017-18 and we still haven't really found an answer for it. Surely there is enough evidence out there now in the form of footage or theory for us to have come up with an effective answer? Surely there are players out there who have the skillsets, or could have developed the skillsets in that time, to defeat these problems? Must be a struggle for Pundits like JK to say the same thing every time it comes up.

    • @commentarytalk1446
      @commentarytalk1446 2 роки тому

Most of the comments here talk complete irrelevance brewing up their own narrative clouds etc. However your comment goes to the central point of what is defeating the ABs and is constructive.
I think the 1st reason they have not "found a solution" is because ABs seem to prepare and train for a brand of rugby that is free flowing and expansive. In the past it worked in winning at all levels and it's most entertaining. However with weaker pack it's being exposed as well as the development of this "robotic" style of "set-piece" rugby by other nations improving.
What is the right reaction of ABs? Find players to answer it? Well I think their top selection backs are still the best in the world. However for forwards imho they're beating beat-up and that makes it hard to win a game. I don't know what selection they can find to find for the forwards - But they need to have their expansive game for 2nd half of 2nd half as well as a Plan A kicking for territory game if the forwards are under pressure or else rush defence is stopping the expansive game too soon in the game... Fundamentally you have to put pressure going forwards down the middle to suck in or break the line before going out wide. Same in Rugby League fundamentally and kicking for position tactically when in own half to avoid penalties and points from goal from pressure.
Rush defence ain't going to look good if the line is broken down the middle or blind side by forwards first.
Pundits just talk crap to keep viewers watching - talking heads wasting everyone's time - same in most sports as they sell "personality" over "technical description".
Again your comment is good because it's descriptive instead of emotive waffle. Thank you.

Right around the rucks, or just one out, kinda like you say. Punch it up, draw them in, and give our backs a chance to shred 'em.
I think our set-piece is solid enough but I feel like there are too many passengers around the park or at least guys who aren't quite living up to their potential. I would love to see Joe Moody showing some ball skills like he did when he first came along, or for guys like Ofa Tu'ungafasi to show some leg drive. Would love to see Brodie Retallick back up to full speed as well. Either that or bring in some new guys who can do it, or be developed along those lines.

also the the ABs have played so many games in the last few months that the video analysis people could do a great job of turning the tactics around. the speed of play at the breakdown from Ireland and France denyed the ABs the time to regroup for defence. they keep this up for the whole 80 minutes some thing no one but South Africa can do. but unlike SA the ran the ball into the defenfive hole rather than kick it. this with the quick turn around at every ruck (the fastest from Ireland was 1.2 seconds and the slowest was 4 seconds, but wales fastest ruck was 4 seconds) they were able to drive holes in the defence.

Without hesitation, they recognized how well Ireland and France played, and are seeing the elements where New Zealand could improve.

@@beazjohnson9865 that's right, Robertson proposes the most advanced and evolved rugby in the world .. Crusaders have won all the trophies they have participated in .. Robertson's Crusaders would beat many tier 1 national teams easily! .. obviously all the coaches will remain at the helm of the teams up to RWC: any changes would occur after RWC .. so until 2023 Rennie's place is safe

The answer is back to a Earl Kirton styled play, plus use the blindside effectively. Then gaps will appear out wide on second and third phase plays.

@@Philzoid No? Actually the first thing anyone said was that the French played very well. But if you don’t think the ABs being tired had an impact on this game you obviously haven’t been following rugby very long, or played yourself for that matter. No one is taking anything away from the French performance when saying that because they were outstanding, but you can’t deny that being a factor.
