The lack of blacksmith upgrades seems deliberate to me. He's relying on fortifications and tight base design, unit micro, unit positioning, bonus damage, and healing to keep units alive and protect his eco instead of blacksmith upgrades. He's saving hundreds of food and gold by not getting those upgrades and he's getting to Imperial Age faster.
1000%. He's done the math and decided it's not worth it with this strat. Pikes doing an extra 1 or 2 dmg is nothing when they rely on 15+ bonus damage. It's like a 5% attack increase, and won't even decrease the number of hits to kill in most instances. Knights could definitely benefit, but he probably thinks he's better off spending the res on 1 or 2 extra units, esp since he doesn't mass cav anyway. Or using the res to get to imp faster. And then his scorps and monks don't actually benefit from the blacksmith. The one upgrade that might still be useful for him is armour 1 because it's so cheap and actually makes a significant difference in survivability on his pikes and cavs, even if the numbers are small.
The only blacksmith upgrades that would help would be infantry armor for halbs and range/attack for castles. They aren't using much that needs blacksmith upgrades so might as well go all in on the push and not go for blacksmith upgrades
Agreed, halbs have 32 bonus damage against cavalry (+ the normal melee damage), so investing a ton of resources just to earn 4 more damage is kinda pointless when the enemy is only using cavalry anyways.
Still very strange to see no blacksmith upgrades at 1500 ELO. Considering that he still had a blacksmith for castle age transition and spare food in the long run, at least a couple armor infantry upgrades wouldn't hurt. I wonder how his late game play looks like. :)
Well then why even bother building blacksmith? Make market instead for the second building, he often floats res he could sell/balance eco later on. Even the +1 armor would help a lot and it's just food. This could still be optimized more, but pretty cool he hangs at 1.5k with town bell :D
This channel is such a treasure. I have only played AOE2 like 3x. I played empire earth as a kid which makes me terrible at AOE2, but it's so fun to watch unique strategies play out.
This was so inspiring to me. I love the way Zztop built a compact base, made house walls, and had vision of the map. Would love to be able to do something like this in my own games.
Wow. In the first game I was suprised that Blame_lagg hadn't been more aggressive after the drush. Usually you can expect a follow up with scout rush, because red had nothing to defend with, except 11 vills on berries at that moment. But the strategy from ZZTop is very bold anyway (pushing deer on Arabia without scout an opponent is a risky play). And the order of actions I liked very much: FC, then three knights, then TC on stone and wood, then a monastery, 5 monks for the relics and defence, a castle, scorpions with torsion engine and some shotels probably.
I guess it's better to click it somewhere now and then. Because in my experience an auto-scout runs into TC fire very quickly (sadly, even if you already have your enemy scouted).
His play style is totally unique, and there are so many little things that make use of immersive features of the game. The knights healing in the castle for example. It makes sense the knights would go chill in the castle to recoup and then come back out onto the battlefield. Things like this remind me of when I first played the game in the early 2000s. I would always use features like that. I would have units heal in the castle, I would use monks to restore my troops after battles, I would form up armies with a single knight, a bunch of pikemen, and some onagers and move it around the map just because it looked cool, and looked like a real medieval army. AOE2 has the coolest mechanics and setting. Love it.
I am really curious how he deals with archers rush. like you can't fight that with villagers, the same way you would with scouts. I guess he just takes the damage while going up to castle and the knight can deal with it later? Also man-at-arms would also be strong enough to take him from berries
Its seems like he goes 25 pop deer push knight rush, archer rush will be maybe too slow on lower to mid levels to punish that, I mean 15 min castle age that is sharp timing, and yea as Михаил Штенцов mentioned, tower could buy him even more time.
ZZtop is indeed a legend, the quirky and unique ways he plays Ethiopians, especially when he played non-meta style. I can't believe it works in 1500 elo. I will try to try this in my next arabia game. gg wp!
And for the townbell, you're right it's not optimal but I think he's doing it to avoid taking any losses at all. Bell will always make sure villagers will find somewhere they can fit, doing it manually you sometimes overfill and you lose a few villagers. Usually we don't mind, because it's something we can improve with micro or because we still have other economy. But... This guy's different, look how he saves his low hp military. He doesn't want to lose units at all
I'll say - the lack of blacksmith upgrades looks 100% intentional IMO. He's done the math and decided it's not worth it with his strat.
