The brits actually had amazing food before coal. Unfortunately, the advent of coal changed how the very pots and stoves were designed to avoid you know, making a mess and killing anyone, and subsequently most things had to be baked or boiled in closed containers to avoid being covered in soot. And also lots of places in Exeter are still named Isca after the old settlement Exeter came from. There's Isca road, and lots of buildings and businesses with Isca in the name. Just some random trivia.

It wasn't until bow designs were made better and better that they passed usefulness, and that still wasn't for accuracy on the battlefield but for lethality with enough archers or on horseback.
