The basic instructions for the poncho are as follows:
Once you have figured out your Base Cast On number you will need to work with half of that number and one quarter of that number.
Cast on your Base Cast On number + 2 and then work garter to your desired neck line height.
Join in the round being careful not to twist and place a beginning of round marker.
Set up round: knit 1/4 of Base Cast On number, make 1, place marker, k1, make 1, knit 1/2 of Base Cast On number, make 1, place marker, k1, make 1, knit 1/4 of Base Cast on number
Body of Poncho
Round 1: knit entire round
Round 2 (Increase round): (knit to marker, make 1, slip marker, k1, make 1) twice, knit to end of round
Repeat Rounds 1 & 2 until the poncho is your desired size
Bottom edging
Round 1: Purl entire round
Round 2 (Increase round): (knit to marker, make 1, slip marker, k1, make 1) twice, knit to end of round
Repeat Rounds 1 & 2 until edging is desired size

I love it! It’s such a blank slate. I’m thinking that I would knit the start a bit longer for kind of a “henley” style neck; could even add a couple of button holes and buttons. Could add the occasional garter ridge to make it a little more interesting. It could also look nice with maybe some broken rib sections? You could use this pattern to make a dozen ponchos and never knit the same one twice!
That was exactly my intention! Yes, you could add in bands of garter, or lace, or whatever works with your math. Doing rows of k1, p1 would add some nice texture. Randomly putting in bobbles could be fun. The sky is the limit!
And yes, you could make the flat part longer and button it ... I have a cowl that works like that. Actually that cowl has a big, beefy cable worked side to side and then you pick up stitches all along the length, join in the round, and knit the cowl in the round from that point. Totally could work for a poncho like this. (This is how you end up a designer so be careful LOL).

I am afraid that I barely know how to crochet so there will be no crochet tutorials for me ... not an expert in that LOL. But I bet this basic concept could be modified to work for crochet.

It must be poncho season! So by random lace pattern do you mean a stitch pattern you randomly chose or lace that is worked randomly? Because I cannot even imagine free-styling lace LOL!
@@WatchBarbaraKnit haha, the lace is charted, but you know how you mention swatching in this video? Well, I skipped that step and what I thought would become a large wrap, ended up being a moderately sized rectangle. So, I figured I’d make a second one and turn it into a poncho

Hi there, There is an easy way to figure out how much yarn and the size you need by making a simple spread sheet. The spread sheet can be used for any pattern. B.Hooked has a nice one called how to change size using gauge. There are others that show the math of how much yarn you need for a pattern that you can add to the spread sheet. What is nice once you build the spread sheet all you have to do is put in all the measurement and the math is done for you. I've built my spread sheet and it works great.

Awesome! I’m doing the 84 cast on size. Question, since you have to add two stitches, am I casting on 84 or 86? Because when you get to the little demonstration you added 2 to the cast on but not in the divisible work you showed on the paper.
The extra two stitches are in the paper example, they are framed by the increases. Your cast on is the base number plus 2, so if you have determined that 84 sts is what you need for your neckline you would cast on 86. Please know that the specific numbers I used for the example are not necessarily going to work unless you have the exact yarn/gauge that was on the yarn label.
What length circular needle would you recommend? I love this idea!
It depends entirely on how big you're planning on knitting. You will most likely need to start with something in the 16 - 24 inch range and then increase as it gets bigger and bigger.

what is the difference between knit 1 and make 1?
Knit is simply working a knit stitch into the next stitch on the needle. Make 1 is an increase that adds a stitch to the total count.

Just watched this for about the third time. I’m not planning to cast on for this project any time soon but here’s what I’m thinking. I want mine to sit with the increases on the sides rather than in the front. I will start with a pretty loose cowl (I’m a glutton for punishment so this will be in 1x1 rib) then transition to the body (this is where the increases begin) then do a few rounds and then some kind of simple color work around the shoulders. When the poncho is wide enough to fit comfortably around my shoulders I will stop increasing on one side, but keep doing the increases on the other, so that I get the dramatic point down one side of the poncho only. Make sense? Then wherever I decide the bottom will be I’ll do a couple inches of ribbing to match the top. At least this is what I’m seeing in my head. Thoughts??
My main thought is that I cannot wait to see how it comes out. The reason I make tiny versions is that I have a very hard time visualizing things LOL.

In fact, I’ve got about 3200 yards of a gradient laceweight set of yarn balls from Miss Babs that I have been sitting on, wondering what it will be. And now I’m thinking this might be the thing. I said I was a glutton for punishment, didn’t I? If I do use the laceweight for this idea, I’ll at least skip the color work. I think. :)

I'm afraid I don't know how to solve your problem. Here is an example with easy math:
Desired base cast on = 40
add two for spines = 42
After you join in the round:
k10, m1, pm, k1, pm, m1, k20, m1, pm, k1, pm, m1, k10
so you have used the sts in this way: 10 + 1 + 20 + 1 + 10 which totals the original 42 cast on.
I am uncertain what you are doing that would make it not work. The only thing I can think if is if you are using kfb for your increase. KFB uses up a stitch when you are knitting so that would throw things off by 4 sts. You can use KFB but you would have to compensate for it, using the above example it would be:
k9, kfb, pm, k1, pm, kfb, k18, kfb, pm, k1, pm, kfb, k9
