I was sitting in my home alone, quite miserable, and while looking for some music on UA-cam this video popped up... And now I'm knitting vigorously the boneyard shawl, way much happier, all sad thoughts gone away... Thank you Stephen! 🥰
Your style of teaching is unbelievably awesome. Please never stop teaching, your patience your explanation can't explain! Jo words to explain. Love from London!
I am just getting to the end of my second Boneyard shawl. The first one I knit earlier this year was my very first knitting project. I didn’t do the icord bind off on that one but I’m giving it a try this time around! Your videos are so helpful; you are a fantastic teacher.
I’m so excited to start this pattern! I’ve been crocheting for almost 2 years now and I’ve been getting into knitting. this will be my first big project. It seems fairly simple and I’m pretty sure these techniques will be important in the future!!!!
You are a gifted teacher and such an inspiring artist. Thank you from all the struggling knitters out there, myself included. I also LOVE that you made this pattern free for those who want to try out making a shawl. Best wishes from Nova Scotia, Canada.
Thank you thank you thank you! I appreciate your clear explanation of these basic bits. I’m also a fan of your work overall, so thank you for sharing ❤
You’re welcome 😊 I start dozens of shawls just like this, so you can unlock a whole world of top-down shawls. You can use this beginning to design your own work of art. It's so addicting!
I came across this pattern via my daughter who just happens to live in CU. We did not know at the time that this pattern was born there. It knit up great with the yarn I had for another shawl pattern but decided I needed something different. The icord bind off takes forever but the result is fabulous. Your video was so thorough and I will forever hear you explaining M1L and M1R I my head as I knit them. So glad I have found another amazing teacher to refer to on my knitting journey.
Stephen, yesterday morning I finished my first Boneyard Shawl and am proud of it. I started knitting it in 2018, so the pattern I began with was your original Boneyard Shawl pattern. My shawl was in hibernation for 4 years, so when I got back around to it this month your revised pattern was available. I used the I-cord bind off and it's perfect for this shawl. Yesterday afternoon I began my second Boneyard Shawl, in large part because I found this video so inspiring. Love the changes set forth in the new pattern: garter tab, three garter stitch edging, I-cord bind off, plus general explanations to help us along the journey. I love watching your videos, even if I'm not knitting the pattern at hand. Your attitude is always so positive and your kind warmth comes shining through. Thank you, Stephen.
You are so much fun!!! ❤️ It is obvious you are very passionate about knitting and helping others along their knitting journey. Your explanations are so thorough. And I LOVE how you not only have the row you are working on typed out on screen, but HIGHLIGHTED the stitches you are working! Thank you so much for all you do!
Oh wow!! All the sudden I can do this!!! For me was a bit tricky with the M1L/M1R because I knit in Portugese style. But I did it, because of your really good explanation and video! Thank you so much!
Amazing explanation! I was wandering to learn how to knit a shawl - I am a beginner- because books do not explain. Thank you for saving me and solving my questions about knitting a shawl!
Okay, this is seriously the best knitting tutorial I have ever seen. I learned a lot AND was super entertained. I've seen your patterns before but I'm so glad I found your UA-cam channel too! Thanks so much!
I’m not quite an advanced beginner but I liked this shawl. I must have started the sucker 15 Tim’s beet- red in the face. Then all of a sudden Shazam! I got it! I can do M1L/ M1R in my sleep! I love it! I love it! I love it! Thank you Stephen! ❤️
Just found this, and you are a life saver! It's overwhelming at times trying to decipher a pattern, so the way you add the written notations on the screen as you do the actions really helps a lot!
Thank you for explaining this Shawl. I have had the pattern for a while & just never tried it. Thank you for showing how to do it holding the yarn in the right hand.
NOW I understand the hype of Stephen and West Knits! 😍 I've never before watched his tutorials, this is my first. And the rule of thumb for the increases is pure perfection, makes my life so much easier! Thank you Stephen ❤
Stephen, your explanation is very clear; any beginner knitter now can knit this shawl. My thought was that it's called Boneyard shawl because it's like a shawl female workers at the boneyard wore, back in the Victorian time (hard and dirty work)
Literally dove into a pattern for a Jane Austen shawl without realizing I had no idea what I was doing, but the basics of your shawl helped me unpack the pattern immensely!
You are such a skilled teacher, great instruction and at a good pace that i could keep up (im 60 and this is my first shawl knit). So thank you for taking your time to share your expertise. Just in time for our (new zealand) winter. Your such a joy to watch.
This is a genuinely excellent video. I really appreciate that you had the pattern instructions at the bottom and highlighted what step you were on and how clear your explanations were. I love that you put the timestamps in your description! I'm a visual learner but I'm also a brand new knitter so it's sometimes difficult for me to follow tutorials that blend visual instructions with "check the rest of the pattern for the remaining rows." I keep trying to find 'full' tutorials, and this was exactly the kind of tutorial I was looking for! Thank you!! I'm absolutely going to knit this shawl.
I am just finishing the second shawl with your help. It’s New Year’s Eve 2023 and have 2 hours to finish my I-cord bind-off for the Gala Dinner.🎉 It’s taking me forever! Thank you Stephen!
You are certainly a very informed knitter plus great knitter. Love your explaining the different techniques, precise and understandable. Great video. Thank you so much.
I have always been intimidated when considering knitting one of your patterns. No longer. Thank for a wonderful pattern and such clear instructions. The I-cord bind-off is wonderful and easy.
OMG! I always mix up make one right, make one left....now I won't have to look it up every time! Right in the front door, I left the back door open! Genius!
Thank you for sharing this information with us. This was very helpful information. I will be making this shawl this fall. Have a wonderful day and stay safe.
oh my, love this shawl and cannot wait to try making it. I absolutely love the "I left the front door open" and "I'll be right back" for the make one L or R......I might actually be able to make those increases without having to look at which one is which from now on so big thank you for that little tip
I have knit the design quite a few times. Years ago, I made several of these shawls for gifts! I still have a couple that get rotated in my wardrobe. I love self striping yarns for this design-adds additional fun! Thank you for your designs and your tutorials!
Firstly you are an amazing artist! You are also an amazing teacher which is very difficult but you make it seem so easy and fun! I cant wait to spin enough yarn to start doing your patterns. Thank you so much for spending the time with us!! Much love!
This was one of my 1st shawls and 1st knitting projects!!!! Of course I gave it away and always regretted giving it, definitely going to have to revisit and do another but thank YOU!! may have to give it the yarn over instead of M1R M1L this time!!!! Thanks again for these great teaching tutorial Its like having a little visit from Stephen at home...
Hi, Love the way you explain the process. I have some beautiful fingering superwash merino where I will use this pattern. I have two colors and will be use them both. I think I can adapt the pattern to work with fingering and it will give me a fluid fabric. Thank you for sharing your talents with us.
I’m watching this video (which I love!) and I’m reminded of the Boneyard Creek where I grew up and THEN you mentioned Urbana, IL! There IS a connection after all! Thanks for this video! My next shawl - maybe just the right thing for a prayer shawl donation through Greater Boston Knitting Guild!

I’ve just finished knitting this shawl this morning and it’s currently on the blocking mats. It was my first ever shawl and I absolutely love it. I already have multiple more of your shawl patterns planned, including the Geogradient MKAL 2023. Cannot wait! ❤
