      Yes we know now that fundamentally the engine itself is correct and fine :) and any issues are electrical!

    My wife keeps telling me I missed my calling. I LOVE wrenching on my truck and motorcycles. And I am absolutely a fan of you, Llew and Chris who are in the process of making this LT1 a runner and a stunner. I know this is a labour of love and I look forward every week to see the progress you boys are making. Godspeed and greetings from Vancouver Island!!😊

    I've nothing to offer in the way of comments other than encouragement. I'm really enjoying this series and your infinite capacity to learn about how to diagnose problems and just get on with the task to sort them out and to top it off, on a typical British driveway. Having a friend/colleague with the same mindset and approach goes along way to successfully achieving your goals. I'm not really too fussed by the car (rare or not - I prefer the C3 anyway) but just enjoying each episode as they happen. I came here straight after seeing the Late Brake Show barn find - glad I did, thank you. Dom.

    It's a good lesson in how idle time kills a car so much more swiftly than road miles.

    • @Auto_Funk
      @Auto_Funk  3 місяці тому

      True true, but on the other side of the coin, its only really killed service items that would need to have been changed anyway. The underbody seems in remarkable condition! Plus someone in the trade once told me "You can change anything about the car except the mileage, and if its been written off"...

    "it's just not practical at the moment"... another classic insight for under-funded driveway mechanics. you've made great strides on the engine - fresh hi-test is the nectar of long-neglected chariots. you guys need a mindless break... super clean the interior & trunk, then clean & polish the exterior. snappy looks will make the next phase of mech efforts easier on the soul. after the brake work, seriously consider driving (or taking) it to the nearest lift to make the much-needed comprehensive review of undercarriage. or maybe... given the hard work, success & attention you guys are getting, some supplier of portable car-lifts over there should lend you one that will get that thing a meter into the air. cheers!

    The PBR caliper was used by multiple brands. So you may find something local. The 96 Corvette and Mustang Cobra 94-97? version of the caliper is a bit stiffer than the 91. The 96 version bolts on and I believe the Baer and Mustang Cobra versions are direct bolt ons. Baer used the caliper in kits for many classic cars. The black 96 Corvette caliper would be a lucky find.
    C5/C6 PBR calipers can be adapted but you would need the 5 spoke ZR1 wheels for the spokes to clear the caliper. We've had good luck with Vettepros in Charlotte, North Carolina getting us parts. You can tell the C4 vs C5 PBR 2 piston caliper by looking at the front of the caliper. C4 has 2 full circles, C5 , base C6, 2005-06 GTO, Holden, and later Mustang is a camel hump.

    When I did the brakes on my C4, I ordered rebuilt ones from RockAuto , ordered Sunday evening, had 'em by Wednesday lunchtime. IIRC, they were the best , not only on price, but core charge too. That's a thing with 'em , not worth the shipping cost to send cores back for credit. I replaced the flexies with braided stainless ones at the time, the brake feel was transformed , solid, progressive and bloody powerful. Hawk pads were installed, great feel and very clean, less dust than any other pad I've used. Regarding your recent short on tne 'new' C5.....I don't mind if you feature that, as much as I'm digging the 'Zeearrwun'- just gimme 'Vette content and I'm happy as pig in that stuff they're happy in ! Keep it up , it's rivetting interest, and well done you two.

    If you can purchase a brake seal kit and new pistons then it might be worth your while to remove all the old ones and then just dip the calipers in some citric acid with water. Do that a couple of times using a power washer on them to remove the stubborn dirt. Dry them off with compressed air or leave overnight and then spray them up in silver and then fit the new seals and pistons, will look brand new and will be a lot cheaper to do.

    • @Auto_Funk

      Thanks! It was tempting to go that way but we've purchased remanufactured replacements - If they are no good we will probably just pay someone to do ours. Another crackin' video. Nice to hear the engine running much better than previous weeks. Does help with full voltage.
    I think that before too long and running the engine any more, a few key essentials need to be flushed and changed. Oil, oil filter and of course draining the coolant.
    Really need to find someone with a wet blaster to clean off all those brake parts properly.
    Keep up the good work and do you have any plans for working on the car other than your driveway.

    Hello from Georgia in the south eastern US. I've been watching since part 1. You said if anyone has any suggestions; well if you haven't already had the brake rotors "turned" on a lathe, why not paint them with a couple coats of black spray paint and afterwards have them turned? It's only for aesthetics and will look nice once re-installed on the mighty ZR1. I did on my 2004 C5 Corvette because the rusty brake rotors looked bad compared to rest of the car and the shiny thin spoke chrome wheels. "High temperature" black spray paint was used. Also the brake calipers were unbolted to remove the rotors, then painted with the same high temperature paint, lastly sanded the embossed "Corvette" logo silver again and installed new rubber brake hoses. The calipers were painted red by a previous owner and most of the paint had come off, so now they're all black.
    When the engine ran again a few episodes ago, I started clapping! Truly happy for you and hoping that you will flush the rear differential oil and transmission oil too. Just be sure to open the fill plug FIRST on the transmission and differential, then open the drain plugs. I only say that because of the apparent corrosion here and there.
    You should be driving the ZR1 soon and regularly; I am enjoying the journey.

    • @Auto_Funk
      @Auto_Funk  3 місяці тому +1

      Oh yes always open the fill plug first !!! The diff and gearbox fluids will be done most likely when we get the car to a garage and on a ramp to make life a bit easier and safer. :)! Thankyou for the support from day 1 :)!!! We were clapping too! such a huge move forward when the car starts to come back to life.

    Get some jackstands. But also working on soft gravel with the emergency lift as a support is not great. You can seriously injure yourself. Really nice to follow along regardless :) It is all about learning how to do things and I think a lot of it is trawling corvette forums looking for trips and tricks from people who have done it before. No need to reinvent the proverbial wheel.
    Edit saw that you got the jackstands and the wooden boards 👌

      They do need doing but to be honest we really want to get the car mobile first under its own power... so we can get it to garages with ramps, make it easy to get onto trailers etc and ensure its running so we can get it safely stored before winter. So that's priority one really!

  • @MrManBuzz

    It doesn't make any sense to buy new calipers and then send these old ones off to get rebuilt as well. Unless the casting itself is badly pitted they're perfectly serviceable as is with a new seal kit. Lick of paint and they'd look brand new.....which is exactly what would be done if you sent them off to get done by someone else. So why not do it yourself? You seem more than capable. If the piston is stuck, compressed air into where the brake fluid goes will free it, just put a lump of wood in front of the piston so it doesn't shoot out like a bullet.

    Hey lads, worked on these before and you should replace the O2 sensors (oxygen sensors, there are 2). Buy with factory oem to save you the headaches of cheaper versions from China.

    Chevy put a strong brake bias spring in the master cylinder to put most of the braking effort on the front wheels, this helps stop the rears locking up and the car spinning if and when you brake going around a corner, but it does mean the rear brakes don't do much. Doug Rippie Motorsport sells a slightly weaker spring that noticeably puts the rear brakes to work, you just have to be careful to only brake hard when you are going in a straight line which, policy in any car.

Renting a small unit would make it a lot easier to get stuck into various areas of the car without having to put it all back again. We're not sure of the actual number it would take but all subs/likes/comments/views really do help move things forward towards that goal, and ultimately being able to save other cars. We really must get the car put away over winter. We hope she has spent her last winter outside. :)

    I've done plenty of at DIY brake caliper refurbs with just a wire wheel and rattle can with high temp paint, polishing the piston and cylinder with fine grade sandpaper, and of course new seals. It's obviously cheaper but often quicker than waiting for a specialist to return your originals. Other options are websites like Bigg Red where I think you send your originals as a core but you they send you a set already done in return.

    • @Auto_Funk
      @Auto_Funk  4 місяці тому +1

      It was tempting to go that way but I feel like it deserves brand new parts :) So we've just dropped the best part of £1000 on new calipers and discs. We will keep the old calipers and maybe get them refurbed by Bigg Red or somewhere if the new calipers are no good - It just seems easier that way and it'll be nice to have new parts fitted!
