Deffo a dry joint, pin connection OR possibly a dodgy Earth. Check the Earth to Chassis bonding. Remove clean and reseat the Earth Bonding connection points. There will be one from the battery and one from the ECU 👍 Do some continuity checks without the engine or ignition on. Slam the bonnet/hood and see if you get intermittent open circuits.
Thanks Gizzmo! What we've done (off camera) is cleaned up all the female connections in the plug and checked and cleaned all the earth points... We haven't ruled out a dodgy connection or bad earth somewhere but it seems to be the ECM as fault... A very light tap on it changes the way the engine runs so it's highly likelly thats the issue.
Just finished watching your latest video, and it's 12:45pm Wednesday here in Aussie. All I can say is BUGGER!! You'll get there in the end guys. Fingers, Toes, Eyes crossed.
Hey guys...good job hanging in there with that Vette! I've been through many projects like yours....well done! Oh man...loooove the Honda 400-4! I agree the exhaust are sexy wrapping around to the right side much like the 550F! I had a blue 400 with Cafe Bars and a Kerker back half. Never...never let me down! Cheers boys!!
As for the crashed corvette!! You could maybe look into re-shelling it? Everything else is there!! Great video guys!!! It’s still that ECU that has a problem by the looks of it!!!
Shame about a smashed c4. But again engineering on these cars are just mind boggling. Rolled car and not only is the engine intact.....its sounds brand new. I have more respect for these cars because of this series
Bummer, it was all going so well. I think I would check all the connections on the ECM plugs next. The 400/4 is a wonderful bike. I still miss the red one I had for a while in the early eighties.
Check the loom pins to the ECU, I had a very similar problem with a V8 Soarer, turned out to be the loom ends weren't gripping the pins tight enough. Repinned the loom ends and bingo.
Finding wiper blades thin enough to fit under the hood was a challenge for me. I eventually bought a set of wiper blades and used the rubber refills in the original blades in order to clear the hood.
Same here in Westgate on Sea. It was owned by a smashing old guy (I think his name was Howe) who had no inheritor and when he retired he couldn't find anyone to buy the business. His shop was part of the town. Now it's a 3/4 mile run to buy a few small items.
Noticed the 400 4, gorgeous sounding with a free flow silencer, they were dogs dangly bits in the mid 70's. Bloody gutted about the ZR1. You'll get there in the end.
Thankyou for the support :)!... Indeed I can imagine in the 70s they were an outstanding bike. Having also ridden 60s british bikes, I can imagine the impact these made when they arrived in the 70s. Brakes... that actually work?!?!? :O! electric start, indicators, under seat storage, suspension that works, decent headlight, locking petrol cap etc... For example. Almost all the features of fairly modern bikes really.
Definitely need to check the connectors to the ECM - sounds like loose joints from the harness to the ECM.........somewhere in there. Might need the harness repaired itself.
To put the Cam Cover Emblems on just use a small amount of black RTV gaskset maker on the back... make sure to clean the surface well of all old adhesive
I'd try wiggling all the ECU connectors and wires to see if you can reliably reproduce the problem with the hood open. That will give some important clues. If that all checks out OK, then it seems like there is another problem to fix inside the ECU.
We've had so many people mention this - Unfortunately we've done all that and we've isolated the fault to the ecm, the wiring is all absolutely fine.... I might post a short later to show you guys....!
@@Auto_Funk OK, that is good to know. I'd almost rather a fault in the ECU since that will probably be more fixable for an expert at a workbench with diagnostic equipment. Chasing wiring and connector issues may have been more challenging and frustrating. Let's hope whatever is wrong inside the ECU can be fixed!
Thanks David! We went to the crossroad, fell down on our knees Asked the Lord above, "Have mercy, now, save poor ZR1 if you please"! Chris has been across the USA but sadly Llew hasn't visited yet!
Chris here! That’s really quite interesting. I bought it from a guy in Taunton! Maybe the bike has spent most of its life down there. When I bought it back to Derbyshire in a van I opened the door at the first service station to check it hadn’t moved and check the straps and several blokes came up to have a look saying how lovely it was! With the pipes it makes them really recognisable.
when reviving any long-stored car, what you are experiencing is exactly how one proceeds to resolve remaining mysteries. wait till it is MOT'd & driving regularly... more frustrating things will occur. yet, they go away until it becomes as reliable as the model ever was. as to the C5 or just about anything in that shape... I'd walk. & if I owned it, I'd part it out asap.
Make sure the wiring to ECM is good and no pins into the DIS are bent its easy to do(bend pins when reinstalling harness)... get a scan tool on it and check your values
Thanks Lee! We checked ALL of the wiring and it seems perfect - Re the DIS we actually (off camera) spent ages checking the pins and they are all okay too. Frustrating isn't it!
My dad had a burgundy honda 404 and a orange 554 which was the first bike I went on when I was 8 years old 🙂 made me obsessed with bikes after that and now I have a fireblade and a ZX-10R. The vette sounds lovely and smooth now.
Sorry guys but I actually started laughing when the car cut out when you shut the bonnet. 😂 At least you can be almost certain it's still the ecm that needs fettling. Enjoying the series on the C4, thanks guys.
Back in late 80s a colleague ran an Honda 400/4, great bike then and still looks good now to my old eyes👍 the crashed C5 would possibly be good for donating engine gearbox. Sad outcome for car with wreckless driver behind wheel! Hope you resolve the running issue after all your efforts 🤞🐈👍
@Auto_Funk I had it running fine then the day I moved house it decided to die..it has almost new fuel pumps and relays. All that was replaced last year. It's had numerous wiring faults in the engine bay and under the dash. I have not had time to work on it lately. Hopefully in the next couple of months I will have time again.
@leadfootnlazy good luck with it, we don’t have a great deal of time either which is a bit of a pain! I bet yours will be something relatively simple 👍🏻👍🏻
My 2007 Subaru Legacy GT had a problem with the high beams when I bought it in 2012. I thought it was a switch and didn’t think too much about it. But when I tried all of the regular things, none of it worked. So I brought it to my local Subie dealer and they spent hours chasing the electrical path. It turned out that one pin in the wiring harness connector had been pushed in and wasn’t making contact. Go through all five of your connectors and verify the pin positions and that they are not moving in the connector.
Thanks @tods.9947 off camera we've clean and checked every pin on those plugs and they are all perfect, error is definitely in the black box itself...! Thanks for watching.
The dash light that came on is classic of an optispark ignition fault. Not sure if the zr1 has it but the normal 90,s c4 has it. Its inform of the engine with the water pump. Really bad design fault. But common problem.
Ah the 400/4 I used to own a red one many years ago I think in the states they had a 350/4 the engines are similar bar the cc of course but the styling was totally different. Bad luck with the Vette as you were getting soooo close an MOT, as for the C5 not sure what to say about that really as re-shelling it is gonna be costly I think sadly its only fit for parts but I guess its up to you guys.
If you look on Vince's car you car see where the engine hits the hood (I raised the intake 6mm with spacers to stop heat soak) Corvette engineers left practicality no extra space under the hood so how that foam works IDK. As for the crashed C5, it is either body swap, because what car isn't better without a C5 underneath it or VetteKart like Cleetus McFarland and Leroy, look it up if you don't know.

They did have twin/quad pipes on 500/750s. 400Fs were always the 4-1 system. They make the bike instantly recognisable, some of the newer versions of hondas 400s have a similar pipe shape these days!
Engine is absolutely sweet when the control system is working... A few people have suggested a rebuild but it's a 40,000 mile engine and genuinely doesn't need one. Thanks for watching :)
Not a terrible idea! It would be nice to find a rolling shell of some sort and either do an LS swap or use the parts to repair a C5 with a blown engine. Thanks for subscribing and for your comments! :)

Spray all the connections with contact cleaner. They're probably corroded. It could be the loom moving slightly when the bonnet is slammed shut.
Thanks for the tip, off camera we've done that and tested all of the wires going to the ecm, it's 100% the ecm at fault (well, 99.9%!)
Could you borrow the ECU from the rolled Corvette ?
Unfortunately it isn't compatible with ours!
Was that the Valve Shop in Radford?
Nope - This one is in Llew's local village... Cool shop eh!
I don't know how UK rules work, but part that thing out. Harvest what you'll need and in the future. Then funeral pire that thing!!!
UK rules mean it could be put back on the road (it's actually got a clean title!)... Lots of good spares on it and the engine is sweet!
Oh lads, all that work, but you will get it sorted.
I know, it's frustrating - Luckily we both have lots of energy and don't feel remotely fazed by it so far which is good!
I can fart louder than that horn. I'm available to hire for the MOT. Just pay my travel expenses.
Ha!! It certainly lacks lustre but it's performing better than the engine is at the mo!! Didn't know mobile MOT's were a thing!
The exhaust on the 400/4 they used to be twin pipes
Nope
They did have twin/quad pipes on 500/750s. 400Fs were always the 4-1 system. They make the bike instantly recognisable, some of the newer versions of hondas 400s have a similar pipe shape these days!
@@Auto_Funk 1970s was along time ago now 😂I have a tl1000s the full power one I have had for 18yrs
Engine to pieces!! And rebuild it … there’s something bad in there !!!
Couldn’t do any harm..
Engine is absolutely sweet when the control system is working... A few people have suggested a rebuild but it's a 40,000 mile engine and genuinely doesn't need one. Thanks for watching :)
Hit the horn with a hammer, it’ll probably go a lot louder afterwards / free up the second one
Might give that a go! Thanks!
I think you should buy the cheapest corvette on marketplace and resto mod with that other ones engine and running gear.
Not a terrible idea! It would be nice to find a rolling shell of some sort and either do an LS swap or use the parts to repair a C5 with a blown engine. Thanks for subscribing and for your comments! :)
Engine and box on the c5 has got to be at least 5k's worth. Such a shame
Huge shame eh! :(
Mat Armstrong?? Joint project??
We'd love to collab with Matt but we're not sure what would be in it for him!
@@Auto_Funk rebuilding an American icon certainly wouldn’t do him any harm with his American audience..
Reach out to him .. good luck .
It appears that the rolled C5 had a loose nut behind the wheel. So sorry it happened.
A very loose nut we reckon!
Take all the body panels off the wrecked C5 and turn it into a go kart.
Sounds like fun!! :D
Not sure if you are aware but there was about 15 adverts in a 30 min video.
Thanks - we weren’t aware, it’s difficult to control the adverts unfortunately but we will look into it!
That is your updates or system allowing all those adverts. Mine has none. Not paid utub for the privilege.
#194 bulb
Buy it, you know you want to lol
HA! Not going to lie, we would like to but we've got nowhere to store it and too much on with the several other vettes here :) Who knows, maybe in the future we will do a deal with the owner if it's still available
Earthing issue?
Starting to wonder if the ECM issue was why the car was parked up in the first place🤔
Hmm... Possibly but we think it's more likely that the fault has happened whilst it's been sat...
@@Auto_Funk there's nothing stranger than electronics! And nothing more guaranteed to call you a liar. "Yep that's sorted" right up to the point that it decides it isn't sorted after all 🙄
PS loving the ZR 1 series 👍
Id LS swap an XJS with that C5 or a Jensen Interceptor
XJS LS swap would be quite something! How about something like a Triumph GT6? That would be pretty cool!
Get some sun on those legs as well!!!
Ha!! The chance would be a fine thing!!
That was a newt, not a lizard. 🦎
Well we've learned something newt today! :) :) Quite rare to see in the midlands!
I would check all engine earths around the car now you have faults and now it goes off
Sorry guys the car obviously got jealous because you broke off from pre M O T check and went and cheated on it with the C5 😂, they do have hearts you know, Great motorcycle Chris 👌🏻, fingers crossed 🤞 ECU is simple short fix 😕
HA! Just seen your comment - You do make us laugh!! We reckon you could be onto something there... The ZR1 loves to have a tantrum.... As you say it could well be jealous of that lovely smooth running C5!
@@Auto_Funk EXACTLY 😂
