Little known fact: Rogue and Kitty were Logan's sidekicks back in the 80's. Wolverine hated rogue at first and it wasn't until she almost died saving his fiancee, Mariko, that he somewhat warmed up to her and took her under his wing. Doug and rob write the scripts so we can’t blame Malcom for not knowing, he might not know anything at all. But Doug is incredibly insistent in the first movie review that rogue could fly and was super strong and was confident and a sassy southern bell. When she didn’t have any of those powers or traits till she took them from Ms. Marvel (captain marvel). The x men tv show takes place in media rez (meaning half way into the story) we aren’t seeing the beginning of the x men just the beginning of jubilee’s story so rogue already has those powers and traits. BUT even the 90s cartoon has a flash back in a later season showing rogue stole those powers when she was a teenager from captain marvel so either Doug forgot about that, or he’s being very unfair expecting a cameo from captain marvel just so rogue can steal her powers and personality traits and put her in coma for a decade so he can get his late 20s-early 30s live action rogue he wants lol

You gotta give credit to the X-Men movies for one thing, though, switching things up in the timeline and having characters change appearance over the course of 10 years with the sole exception of Wolverine IS very accurate and close to the comic books.

Same issue I had with the original XMen movie review: The problem with the criticism of Rogue here is that Rogue didn't get those badass powers of flight and super strength and toughness until she drained Ms Marvel nearly to death. A younger Rogue NOT having those powers is an ACCURATE portrayal of her.

    • @Nolascana
      @Nolascana Рік тому +7

I get why they had Rogue as the audience surrogate... but it could have worked with Jubiliee as the surrogate just as well and worked out some other bullshit for how the machine worked.
It didn't HAVE to be Rogue as a teenager, honestly, I like the film but I just don't see her as Rogue. Even in later movies tbh.
I mean, Mistique should be her mother?
Captain Marvel being murdered by a young Rogue (her soul essentially gets completely absorbed, pretty sure it did kill her, depends on the writer) practically forced to by Mistique and eventually being saved by Xavier.
Storm... was just bad casting, I love how she is in the cartoon far more.
I mean, I LOVE Sir Ian as Magneto, but, uh, for the rest of the cast being as young as they are/how fresh the team seems to be.
Patrick Stewart bathes in the blood of the innocent, feckit his age I have no issue with. He still looks younger than his age up they had to do for TNG.

The xmen movies were before the MCU.
They could have also just had her kill/almost kill a mutant that had a similar skill set.
They could have changed the cannon and just had it already be a thing and never addressed. Jubilee would have still been a better audience surrogate.

The First Xmen movie and Xmen Evolution were released the same year by different teams... with completely different target audiences and universe expectations.
That goth Rogue wouldn't have worked any better if she was supposed to be the same/ similar age as the other xmen. Nobody would even want to bother with her loner ass if she didn't grow to trust people.
That's why Jubilee was made for the cartoon.
All the movie had to do was write another character in as the audience surrogate and people would have been less pissed.
I mean, I don't hate the films... but she just isn't Rogue. I can cope with her not being as confident and strong as her comic counterpart (storyline and continuity dependent). I can cope with her being nerfed, I mean, they don't even show Storm flying most of the time. Its standing around, a brief bit of wire work, more standing. I mean, pregnancy aside body doubles and stunt women exist... but STILL. It was a stupid decision.
Rogue got punted to side character almost as fast as they forgot to give Cyclops and Jean any character in the following films.
I mean, sure, Magneto being a key focus of the first movie would have worked just fine (Xavier being his foil), gradually focus on the rest of the team- oh wait. That's why first class worked as well as it did.

In Rogue's defense, she's still a teenager, meaning she just had her powers emerge during puberty! How many can truly say as a teenager they were confident in themselves? The version of Rogue we're most familiar with is 10yrs older than the Singer XMen version. A decade is plenty of time to develop the confidence she's known for. Also, within that 10yrs, she would meet Mystique and steal Captain Marvel's powers to allow her to fly

@@10tailedbijuu The context here, is that she never does anything. She can be as angsty and trauma filled as she'd like, but they should have at least done something with her in combat. That way we can get the full idea of her powers, benefits and drawbacks.
That original fight with Sabertooth, have Logan get knocked out, have Cyke get stunned, she walks over and touches them both and blasts the shit out of Creed while also brawling with him, bone claws flashing.
She saves the day, we as an audience realize just how powerful and broken she can be. Just a touch and she's rocking dozens of powers for a few minutes. You suddenly understand why while she hates her power, its handy, it could save lots of people. That is a thing that Evolution was good about. We realize very early that Rogue is dangerous and powerful. She likes people and wants to be liked, but her powers alienate her and force her to be more reserved, its a counter point between her and Kitty in character. Kitty gets to be outgoing and kind, Rogue always doubts herself.

@ryanangelastro504 Well, it all depends on exactly how telekinesis works. In some lore, the telekinetic must be able to see the whole object in order to move it. For example; see an apple on the table. You can see the entire apple and can therefore move it. But, what about an empty refrigerator box. Step away from the giant box so you can see the whole thing, then you can lift it too. But get up close on the massive box so that your entire field of vision is filled with cardboard and you can't move it. Also, get inside the box, where all you can see is just the inside, so once again you won't be able to move it.

He would've been close to Anna Paquin's age in 2006, Gambit could've be introduced as a new student, along with Warren/Angel who ran away from his father, the inventor of the cure, and maybe they'd become friends. He then meets Rogue during her issues with Bobby when he's flirting with Kitty Pryde, his Gambit could comfort Rogue, and his getting close to Rogue when she's considering whether or not to take the cure could help keep that deleted ending where Rogue chooses to keep her powers, becoming more confident. Unfortunately, Kitsch instead took a role in an even more unpopular movie, The Craft for boys- I mean, The Covenant.

However, this revealed one big positive attribute that I took from this scene: it shows that practical effects were used to create this shot, which I do commend them for.

To be fair with regards to Rogue, her original mutant power was only the life/power stealing thing. Her strength and flight came from her putting Carol Danvers (a character not part of the Fox X-Men deal) in a coma. Here is to hoping that MCU Rogue does her thing to MCU Capt Marvel so all is right with the world...

Which still misses the point, Rogue's power is incredibly cinematic. She can touch all of her friends and gain their powers for a little while. Imagine they're in a tough spot, she touches Bobby and Logan and now she's sporting ice claws. Or Nightcrawler, she can teleport on top of it. Rogue just having her own power means that she can mix and match everyone else on the team with her in interesting ways and even add their enemies to the mix.

No, Ice Man couldn't freeze that much water in that little time, Storm couldn't have done anything to stop the water that wouldn't have killed them all, Xavier isn't telekinetic, and Jean couldn't have lifted the jet inaide of it while stopping the water.

While I agree that Rouge was done dirty, part of the reason is that her super strength and flight came from her draining Carol Danvers, aka Captain Marvel, during her time in the Brotherhood before joining the XMen. Fox didn't have the rights to use any other Marvel characters. It also probably helped keep the effects budget down.
Also, Jean totally could've lived through the flood in X2, but Professor X could not have lifted the plane. He's only telepathic, not telekinetic.
I would've loved if they had Wolverine and Storm be together like they were in some of the comics, but apparently love triangles are more appealing.

The “use saber tooth to take off the helmet” argument is kinda crap cause as soon as saber moved to do that, magneto shoots.
Also, when will you review X-men First Class? I liked that movie a lot. And days in future past?

    • @Rhodair
      @Rhodair 2 роки тому +3

Nah, there's zero reason why he didn't pluck up the helm with left hand while grasping for throat with the right. Erik clearly gets disoriented when his throat's gripped. Charles would've had way more than enough time to seize control of Erik's mind. Charles completely had the element of surprise and squandered it.

You know, despite him supposedly being such a big fan of the 90s cartoon, I'm starting to get the feeling Doug doesn't actually know where Rogue's strength and flight came from. Movie Rogue has A LOT of issues, but her starting out as an angsty teen who's sad about not being able to touch anyone isn't a problem....it's that she never grows past that in future movies. That's where his Rogue rants need to be. Not in the first movie XD

I'm surprised no one's mentioned how likeable Malcolm's character is in the 2000's trilogy reviews. They build him up as a one-note edgy teen stereotype but he's actually a lot of fun to watch and it feels like Malcolm was playing himself in the reviews. I like how realistic he is, it's a refreshing change of pace.
