  • 1999's The Mummy did the impossible in recapturing the magic of an Indiana Jones style serial adventure film. But the magical combination of Brendan Fraser, Rachel Weiz, director Stephen Sommers, ground breaking special effects, action and comedy elevate would could have been something equivilant to Wild Wild West. And sure it was diminishing returns with The Mummy Returns and The Mummy: Tomb Of The Dragon Emperor but that original, my goodness. Oh and we just threw in that Scorpion King movie with Dwyane "The Rock" Johnson because why not. Thanks for watching this compilation of videos you might have already seen!

Seriously though, someone should repost that comment from the original video with the historical explanation. It was a punishment in 19th century British prisons. There is, insanely enough, a whole section of the Wikipedia page for treadmills called "for punishment".
I looked in this comment section, but all I found was a high effort blue harvest joke.

So after doing some research I found that the giant hamster wheels were commonly used as punishment for prisoners and slaves in that time. They would be forced to run on them prior to assisting in farming and gathering. They actually made them run so long that their skin would turn a ghastly shade of blue before being sent out to farm, which is why this project was originally titled "blue harvest".

The first Mummy was the peak of 90s Action/Adventure Comedy. It was virtually perfect in every way. Cast, characters, story, jokes, sets, CGI was great at the time. I loved rewatching it a few years back. Then everything went way too digital. Leaning too hard into the comedy, missing a sense of appeal, mystery, etc.

Times like this, a lot of thought goes into what this decision means and how it will affect the rest of my life. And after a lot of thought, I decided that I wanted to know what it was like to be able to say, “I have seen all FIVE Scorpion King movies.”

The first two Mummy movies hit at the right time for me, age-wise. The first one was the perfect amount of scary, and the second was great action. The first two kind of followed the Alien -> Aliens model of horror -> action. I remember going to a friend's birthday party which was a trip to The Mummy Returns in theaters. Upon rewatch, I think it could have been fun to make the primary villain the Scorpion King in the 2nd one, but keep the previous villain-actors around in new roles, like they kind of did with Patricia Velásquez. So, keep her, and Arnold Vosloo, and keep that tradition for all the continuing movies. Would have been a cheeky nod to the Universal Horror style of "familiar face roster"

I love the trope of "give someone you hate a 'curse' that grants them immense power... and, I dunno, maybe makes one of their eyebrows fall off, or they have a mild-to-severe pain in their knee occasionally".
Reminds me a bit of the trope where you have a "failed prototype" that inevitably ends up being far superior to the later "finished" model that they actually decided to produce properly. Something that is inferior or bad winds up actually being bestowed with all of these benefits, with some mild, tacked-on downsides for plot convenience.

@@Opno yes, joking aside I thought it was a well-made, compelling film. Who was the director, do you recall?

@@mattgilbert7347 Leigh Whannell. Primarily an actor (he was the other guy in the room in Saw 1) and also directed Upgrade, the AI movie. And I definitely knew that off the top of my head and didn't just look it up.
But yeah, he's great. Also the main actress in Invisible Man killed it too

43:10 When I was a kid, maybe 11 or 12, I was at universal studios and there was a ride that took you into a 2015 San Andreas kinda situation. The beginning part however was a director telling us to raise our hands if we fit a certain description. Old lady, handsome guy, damsel, and a kid. Everyone had a green screen portion that they shot in a big green screen room and had no idea what the final edited video playing during the ride would look like. I was selected as the kid and they had me jump down to a platform and look up at a giant dangling rock from the ceiling, to which they referred to as “The Rock, while my back tightly against a wall. The Final Cut featured me jumping down onto Dwayne Johnson from a collapsing building and while we both “fell” (jumped) flat on the “concrete”(wall) I was looking up at him(The Rock). I feel like I met him without meeting him.

it may be possible that the "nice camel" comment is a follow up from the scene where Benny is bragging about his group having all the horses(but being on the wrong side of the river) when their boat was set on fire.

As someone who exclusively studied Middle Eastern politics in grad school, specifically on the life of political prisoners I can assure you the giant hamster wheel is completely authentic. Not only did it serve as a means of exercise for older prisoners who couldn’t handle exposure but what the movie didn’t show is that the wheel would be normally attached to a mechanism connected to a canal that would pump water into neighboring crops near the prisons for harvest season.
If a prisoner was able to get a certain amount of water pumped into the ground during the day prisoners would note a blue shimmer radiating from the plants.
This would lead to the development of the phrase “Blue Harvest” which was also the working title for the first Star Wars movie.
