Re DROPS free patterns, I have heard (though not independently researched/verified) that they have a history of design theft accusations. Working in the legal field with some intellectual property experience, this could happen for a number of reasons. Some reasons are merely negligent rather than intentional, but who knows!
Yes! I totally meant to mention this, but I have heard the same! Of course, I would never want someone’s hard work to be ripped off! I definitely hate that this is part of their reputation. It’s just so difficult because they are such a substantial resource of free patterns. I think everyone can decide for themselves if it is something they are interested in getting involved with. Thank you for your insight here!
A good, fair tone to your comment that I appreciate -- and I would like to see an end to the knitting community's runaway cancel culture in 2024. (Again: I don't hear this in your comment)
The very first thing I knit when re-starting knitting was a cardigan from Drops pattern. The instructions were rather sparse but the finished project came out very good and is still in use several years later.
I love this format. You have a great eye for fashion and I felt myself agreeing with you constantly! I must say the Drops is my favorite. I would love to do a knit-along but I'm too new to try Drops. Can't wait to see what you choose😊
Loved this! I definitely think you should just go with the drops pattern and add the details you want from the other patterns. Thrifty pattern for a thrifted yarn.
🌴☀️Hey🙋🏽♀️you it’s sooo nice to get a mid week video yeaaa🎉 I’m not sure about this pattern roundup because it’s not my style I’m thinking because I’m in a tropical state, I’d be so hot 🥵. If I had to pick one it’d be the last pattern, I think the boucle yarn would knit up a nice fabric though I don’t think you’ll see the stockinette that much. I MISS OSI 🐶 where are you hiding him?!?!? And I just LOVE the pic you shared with boyfriend and Osi 🤗 you’re so darn photogenic. Can’t wait to see the progress on the Xmas dress hopefully this weekend☀️🌴
Hello in the mid-week!!! Definitely too hot for shackets for you, but we Can window shop! 😉 I’m with you on the last pattern! And Osi has been surprisingly well-behaved during filming lately so she hasn’t made her usual appearance hahah. I’ll have to get her to say hi in an upcoming video!! Thank you so much 🥰👑
Your intro and editing make all your videos so fun, not to mention your cheerfulness. The Shackets look amazing and whichever one you pick will be beautiful. I have taken down the Nomad pattern for later because it's stunning. You always have the best ideas. Merry Christmas 🎄! Happy Holidays 🎁! And Happy Knitting 💚🧶💚
I love your podcast and have been following your adventures since your first one. I love the Maras, although it probably won’t be your pick it’s perfect for yarn I’ve been struggling to find a match for … so thank you!
That felted project is soooo interesting!! I’m knitting the field day jacket by Ozetta right now and loving it and next I’m wanting one of these cropped bomber jacket patterns ✨🧥✨
I wanted to give feedback on Drops patterns. I feel they get a bad rap. There have been rumors on UA-cam that imply that Drops is a bad company somehow because they’re a big yarn company so they must have some unethical treatment of animals due to low cost yarns. I don’t know of this is true, although you never hear this about other companies such as Lion Brand, or Patons, etc. as far as patterns go I have knotted two very lovely patterns from drops and have more on my list to knit. These patterns are not necessarily made by Garnstudio employees, but are knitwear designers who have sold patterns to drops. Like Petite knit has patterns on Drops free pattern sight for instance. The two patterns I have knit up were the Rain Romance sweater (one of my favorite to wear because I just love the fit and the yarn; drops air.)The other that I knit was the Sherwood Forest turtleneck made with Drops Fabel two different color ways and Drops kid silk. They were both very easy to follow and one had a lace yoke. But each pattern is designed by a different designer so if you get a bad apple it may be a poor or sloppy designer, whereas others are terrific. I say go for it. I love their patterns.
It’s a great resource! Both their yarn and patterns are so reliable for that reason alone, but I often find myself preferring their designs over others I’ve seen. It’s all personal preference! Thank you for the feedback!
You inspired me with your search for the perfect Shacket. So i went on my own little search. Besides the ones you mentioned, the Focus On Lines by Hinterm Steim caught my eye. I love her beautiful, classic designs. I know this one doesnt tick off all the boxes for you, but I think it deserves a peak
Oh my!! The back on that one! 😍 I was so surprised I hadn’t found any with the little pleat detail! I love it and have added it to the bundle-thank you!!!
Thank you for the inspiration. I'm thinking of making a Shacket using a method of creating plaid, using garter stitch and running yarns vertically at the end of knitting each piece. Like this: ua-cam.com/video/H1C35Nd7FYc/v-deo.html
@@akaNoraKnits it definitely needs practice. Now I love sewing collars and collar stands! Making shirts are my favorite. 15 years ago I never would have said that!
The Maras jacket is just stunning and I hope you choose that one! Not exactly what you wanted but you would do such a fabulous job on it. Seems a lot more versatile too. I knit the Wave of Change Jacket by Denise Bayron and I love it. Fun to wear and super warm but not a Shacket. It is size and gender inclusive. Can't wait to see what you decide. Lovely pattern round-up! About the Drops pattern, just go for it. You have found the look you wanted in it, and from your past videos I watched, you change the paid patterns a lot too, sometimes using them more like a slight guideline. So you have knowledge enough to fill in the blanks and correct the errors you may find in the DROPS pattern and get the garment you want from it
Ok fashion stylist Nora, I see you. Gracing us with those chic inspo outfit boards. You are a riot, love your videos. As someone who didn’t know what a Shacket was until I heard you say it in a previous video, turns out I wear a shacket everyday. I cherish my plaid wool Pendleton shacket that I got from the thrift store. Heads up looks like the Maves Jacket pattern is no longer available 😢 one of the issues with drops is that they copy patterns. I remember in particular them copying a pattern by joji locatelli a few years ago.
The BoxyChunky Cardigan looks like its knit in reverse Stockinette ... so you are wearing it Purl-side out and still will need to do a K & P row set ... but I have done patterns similar and just managed my row gauge per a full Garter stitch garment. Be prepared to purl if you like this one!
So interesting to hear that others don't like the Drops patterns! I've knit several of their free patterns now and have had good results from each. Not sure I would suggest them as absolute beginner patterns, as I think they do require some prior knowledge, but overall my experience has been good!
This video is coming at the perfect time for me. I have also been itching to get a shacket, and have just not considered knitting one because I hadn't seen a lot of patterns like what I want... Of course I had seen the Miles shirt jacket, but like you, I don't want a collar like that and was thinking of just adjusting that (and possibly some sleeve details). But now seeing the patterns you suggest, I might go with another one, or just grab different pieces I like.

Great ideas. Thank you for the research & for sharing with us. I have the Myles jacket pattern and the yarn recommended in the pattern. For me, I prefer the stand up collar.
Thank you! 🥰 I love the look of that collar, but I’d have to see if it would hit my chin lol. That would just make me crazy! But nothing I can’t shake up if I go for that one!
If you chose the Drops pattern and half way through, you dont like it, rip it out. Nothing has been lost. Then you can chose a different pattern. You seem to be very good at experimenting and trying new things. I suggest you try the Drops pattern
Some great choices and I think the drops pattern is worth trying and even modifying if you want…. But I see some aspects I love from a couple of them too….
Super interesting! One thing I noticed also about Drops is there is no information about the ease of the garnement. With that being said, the shacket you choose seems fairly oversized so I think that issue may be non relevant in this case.
True! I tend to disregard suggested ease in most situations anyway as I prefer way more positive ease than most designs suggest- but definitely you are right that that contributes to just how bare boned the patterns are!
Great round up! The Nomad and the Dawn to Dusk have both been on my to knit list for a while but both intimidate me a bit. The Dawn to Dusk I would knit quite oversized but shorter, with side seem pockets and maybe additional chest pockets (if I can figure this all out). If you were to knit that one I would love a KAL so I can get over my hesitation ☺
@@akaNoraKnits to be honest they are different categories for me. Yes, both outerwear, kind of, but the Nomad is not really a shacket but a jacket in my eyes. I am happy to have a jacket and a shacket down the line 😁 They would have different vibes and colours.
Hey there Nora - I think the only issue with Drops patterns is they can be hard to understand for a more 'beginner' knitter. European pattern companies tend to be light on details. But because it's free, you can take a look at whether you can understand the instructions and if so, go for it. It's definitely the most 'shacket' representative pattern.
Yes, I have heard about this controversy and I think that there are a combo of reasons why they've been more "taboo" to use in the online knitting community. I definitely want to do a little bit more research into the topic myself.
Very Pink Knits has a pattern called Two Rectangles and a Square (or something like that 😅). It’s knit in pieces and seamed. I knit it in Knit Picks Wool of the Andes…it would fit in the category of a jacket/shirt type garment…and it has pockets! 😊
For me drops patterns are very hit or miss. I knit my first ever sweater from a drops pattern (with my previous experience only being a janky stockinette in the round scarf) and it went great! But then, the current projects I’m working on are two scarf, hat, and gloves sets as Christmas gifts for my girlfriend and mother. And let’s just say it could use some more charts… I’ve been having to do a lot of trial and error with this one. Overall I’ve done quite a few of their patterns, most of them being pretty clear. I really do encourage you giving it a try! And if you get stuck the comments can be a huge help. Wishing you luck with your shacket!❤️🧶
The Miles Shirt Jacket is on my list too. I love it! I also completely get what youre saying about Drops patterns 😂 some of them cant even be called patterns they are so vague! I didnt want to say when i recommended the socks to you the other day as i didnt want to put you off! 🙈Really interested to see which one you choose ❤xx
Hi Nora, I love the garments you gravitate too. We have similar tastes and even better is I am the same bust measurement as you so when you make a sweater or cardigan and see you in it it really helps me out in choosing styles and designers to look at. So thank you!!!! The korsavin (spelling ugh) cardigan is on my list, I want to use same yarn as you did but the heathered brown color in the fisherman’s wool. I really love that cardigan it’s so cool!
The Shackets would be fun by adding faux buttons on the cuff and on the side of the hem, sorta like on a jean jacket! And I like your vision for how the FO will be worn. Can you recommend a boucle yarn?
LOVE that idea! At the moment, I have only thrifted boucle yarn and they have been label-less so I cannot right now. But I’d hope to in the future! I know people love the drops alpaca boucle!
When using a website pattern (incase you decide on trying the Drops pattern) You can just print it out (so you don't always need to go online and go back and forth to see what's next on the instructions) or copy and paste it onto a word document (to not print and use up ink on picture ads) then just print out what you need.
I always appreciate that you choose patterns that are not the super popular ones! I haven't heard of most of the patterns you shared. Oh and BTW, you can save Drops patterns as a PDF if you go to the print options 😉
The Betula jacket is beautiful.
It really is a gorgeous design! So timeless!
Very Pink Knits has a pattern called Two Rectangles and a Square (or something like that 😅). It’s knit in pieces and seamed. I knit it in Knit Picks Wool of the Andes…it would fit in the category of a jacket/shirt type garment…and it has pockets! 😊
Yayyyy something to look into!! Thank you!
Thank you for your insight!!!
Adore the Christmas dress!
Thank you!!! 💃
The first pattern looks like reverse stockinette rather than garter or is that just me?
Might be!!
it is!
I don’t mind a vague pattern actually! Sometimes it’s just more hassle than it’s worth hahaha 😅 I hope you get to the miles shirt jacket!
Awww I love that! I’m glad we found each other! That sounds just gorgeous for your korshavn! I hope you get to it! It’s a great knit!
I love this category. The top one on my list is the Letho by Natasja Hornby. It's a super interesting construction and a really cool look.
Ooh I shall take a peek! Thank you!!
I love this button on cuffs idea. Thanks for sharing.
This was so interesting - I think I’d really love the lace patterned one; it has the look that can be dressed up or a go to casual piece.
I agree!!! If I didn’t have my heart set on this boucle stockinette vision, I’d be leaning that way! It’s a stunner!
Loved this video!! If you end up knitting the dawn to dusk shacket I would love to do a KAL🫶🏻
Oooh good to know!!!
@@akaNoraKnits I'd also be interested in a dawn to dusk KAL! I actually just got the yarn for it today :)
When using a website pattern (incase you decide on trying the Drops pattern) You can just print it out (so you don't always need to go online and go back and forth to see what's next on the instructions) or copy and paste it onto a word document (to not print and use up ink on picture ads) then just print out what you need.
Why have I never thought of this before?! 😂 thank you!!
Actually, I've downloaded many Drops patterns, when you choose the option PRINT, you can then choose save as .pdf adn that's it!
37:20 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 you never fail to crack me out 🤣🤣🤣
😂😂😂 I love that y’all laugh with me!
Yeeey Nora Knits❤️✨😍

I love these round-ups and I love to hear your take and insight! Thanks for all your time investment.
Thank you for watching!!! 🥰
