  • During the Battle of Osowiec Fortress in 1915, German Field Marshal Paul Von Hindenburg ordered the bombardment of the fortress with an artillery barrage of chlorine gas to eradicate the 900 Russian defenders. After the bombardment 7,000 German soldiers advanced upon the fortress expecting little to no resistance when 100 disfigured Russians, coughing up blood and pieces of their own lungs, surprised the Germans with a countercharge. The zombie-like Russians opened fire and attacked the Germans with affixed bayonets causing mass panic and forced the Germans to flee back into their own traps inflicting more casualties. The remaining Russian defenders who survived the gas attacks seized the opportunity to raze the fortress and withdraw while the Germans hesitated. "The Attack of the Dead Men" spawned German legends about unkillable Russian soldiers rising from the dead to fight.

========= The Attack of the Dead Men LYRICS =========
    Turmoil at the front
    Wilhelm's forces on the hunt
There’s a thunder in the east
It’s an attack of the deceased
    They’ve been facing poison gas
    7000 charge en masse
Turn the tide of the attack
And force the enemy to turn back
And that’s when the dead men are marching again
    Osowiec then and again
Attack of the dead, hundred men
    Facing the lead once again
    Hundred men
    Charge again
    Die again
    Two combatants' spar
    Hindenburg against the Tsar
    Move in 12 battalions large
    Into a Russian countercharge
They’ll be fighting for their lives
    As their enemy revives
    Russians won’t surrender, no
    Striking fear into their foe

The 12" picture disk EP for Attack of the Dead Men Live in Moscow with Radio Tapok is possibly the best looking vinyl EP they've released to date (though the etched Bismarck EP might outdo it. Have to wait for snail mail to deliver it from Malta 😡). Side one is full color gas masked covered face with all the fumes rising up and side by is the zombie-esque Russian soldiers, blood dripping from the cloths covering their mouths, coming through the "fog" of war. Really epic design to go with a epic song about an epic military battle. Perfect.

First time I found this band was when they dropped "Christmas Truce" and have been hooked on them ever since. I am not the biggest fan of metal music. But this band I just love and can't get enough of them. Their chose to bring history forward speaks to me. History that many have possibly forgotten or even knew about. I have even taken time to research some of the events and people they put to song. Something I have not done in a long time due to life getting in the way and have forgotten (myself) how much I love history. History (the good, the bad and the ugly) is important. For without it we never learn from our mistakes. May we all find peace and respect in our lives.

Not sure if anyone else have said this, but the reason the Germans fled from the Russians they tried to gas was that they expected everyone in Osowiec to be dead and were terrified when the Russians slowly moved into defensive positions whilst coughing up blood (which may or may not have contained pieces of their lungs. Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong). To be fair, if I were a soldier in the early 20th century and were moving towards an expected graveyard of dead corpses and seing the "corpses" move aroundready to charge me, I'd be pretty freakin scared.
Also, interesting fact: although the Nazis used gas on people they believed were "untermenschen" like the jews, homosexuals and gypsies for example like no one's business, they despised the idea of using gas in battle.

There have been performances where Joakim didn't have a voice anymore and Tommy took over the singing for example. They say they rather don't play than act as if they are playing. Great reaction (again), really like the concept of doing all 3 videos!
Think you should do ”Seven pillars of wisdom” from the same album, it’s about Lawrence of Arabia, the best song on the Great War album in my opinion!
Also, you should do the Carolux Rex album (and learn about the rise and fall of the Swedish empire) the best Sabaton album (guess a majority of Saboton fans agree about that). Start from the beginning of the album (the rise) and continue to the end (the fall) of the album (you have reacted to one song on that album already (en livstid i krig (a lifetime of war))) don’t think you’ll be disappointed on the music and storytelling.
    Best regards from Sweden
(Living just 45 miles from Sabatons hometown Falun, there they have a rock festival every year in August).

I read the Germans retreated because the gassed Russians' skin was chemically burnt, they were bleeding from their eyes and noses, they could only moan, growl and gasp but not speak anymore - in short they appeared like zombies. They were in such an adrenaline rush and shock they did not feel pain anymore and kept on marching even when they were hit by bullets. So the Germans believed, they were actually fighting an army of undead soldiers, which scared them so much they retreated, despite outnumbering the remaining defenders about 20:1.

Thank you for your great reaction to this amazing song!! Like otheres I recommend you to watch Radio Tapok's cover featuring Sabaton! I also, if you are interested in this story, recommend you to watch s short film about this, only 23 min. ua-cam.com/video/LNqeZVUkEKA/v-deo.html I prefer the original version as I understand Russian, but English dubbing is fine too. The story is unusual and filmed by World of Warships. I live about 180 km away from Osowiec (2,5 h drive) but I've never been there before and I plan to go there next Spring. There is not much left of it but now is a must for me to go there.
