What will you do when your traditional way of life is threatened by a powerful force in your native lands? The samurai didn't hesitate to answer this question with our swords. During the Satsuma Rebellion, the samurai and its leader Saigō Takamori fought the Japanese Imperial Government. Their rebellion ended with the Battle of Shiroyama, where in 1877 the samurai prepared for a last stand.
The letter demanding Saigo's surrender: As the leader of young vigorous men of the nation and resisting a great and famous army through many fierce battles, your fame is already well enough know to the world. But now most of your brave generals are dead or injured, and your military power is daily growing weaker. It is already clear that as last your Satsuma army is unable to keep its spirit. I don’t know what further things you can hope to achieve, except a hopeless defensive battle. If you, Saigõ, rather than lengthening the rest of your days a little, prefer to cause hundreds and thousands of dead and wounded from both armies, there is nothing that I, Aritomo, can say to you. I beg you to judge for yourself as you hold matters in the palm of your hand, and that you will save both armies from death and injury. Ah, you are a man famous and known in the world. About our national constitution naturally it is not only Aritomo who knows what you really think. But the matter has been settled over many years of public debate. I, Aritomo, earnestly beg you as your old friend. Writing this my tears fall like rain, and I cannot express myself at all. Please sympathise with the sincerity of my pain.

Samurai were more than just swordsman, it was a way of life for them. All their training, their culture and their very mindset was built around their unflinching duty to serve their daimyo until their death. Asking them to change was like asking the rains to be dry.
Regarding the choice of surrender or die, I can tell how some of the norwegian soldiers reacted when they had to lay down their weapons and surrender to the Third Reich. My uncle told me: " There we were. On the mountain. We had in a month pushed the german forces back to the swedish border, and now, our french, british and polish allies had to retreat because of the attack in the west front Europe. We couldn't carry on. Our friends had left us alone. I saw soldiers cry. We didn't cry when friends fell. Now we cried because the struggles was in vain, and our homeland was taken from us. One soldier grabbed a pistol from a second lieutenant and tried to commit suicide. We threw us against him and forced the pistol out of his hand. He was desperate, and so were we".
Sad story, and Im sorry for what our norwegian neighbours had to go through these days.
Luckily Sweden was never involved in none of the world wars, other than that during ww2 our goverment let the nazis use our railroads in order to bring material, through Sweden, to north part of Norway and Finland as well. Not the proudest moment in our history 😣
The nazis had serious plans to invade Sweden by the Norwegian town Trondheim but the war didnt work out so well on the Eastern front against Soviet. The red army was stronger than Hitler ever thought it would be and defended their border like crazy. But lucky for us swedes, most of all german troops was sent to russia and the plans they had to occupy Sweden never happened.
Ironicaly all military defence of Sweden nowadays points at Russia, but 70 years ago they saved us swedes from the nazis.

Saigo is often known as the Last Samurai and if you search for the Saigō Takamori Statue
in Tokyo you will see that they included his favorite little dog in the memorial. If i ever go to Tokyo I will make sure to visit it!
I highly recommend The Last Battle for the next Sabaton song, its a good one and the history behind it is really unbelievable almost like fiction yet true: 5 days before V Day in austria a group of around 15 american GI along with about 20 member of the german Weirmarch(the german army of WW2) and one ex-SS fought togeter to protect French prisoner of war in a medieval castle against around 200 SS that want to kill the prisoner and managed to win its unreal
He already did that one
@@SmellsVishy He hasn’t reacted to the history video for it.
the story is so absurd i CANNOT believe no movie studio has made a movie outta it
This song is a favorite of mine. Something about the story, actually many of the stories on the Last Stand album, hits deep. Holding so true to your virtues that you give your life to uphold them. Its one thing to claim to believe something, its another to run into certain death. I can't say I understand that level of dedication to honor, but I respect it. Thank you for your dedication, uploading on Christmas Eve. Have a happy holiday!
Thanks
82nd all the way too
The problem with "Surrendering to preserve the lives of your man" consist in their culture, all samurai would have commit seppuku to preserve their honor, because in their culture honor was more valuable than the live of the person itself. Honor was shared with the family, therefore shaming not only yourself but all your relatives. While dying is "only" your live that ends, while you still preserve the honor of your family EVEN if you originally rebelled (the rebellion itself was something their honor dictated).
They sound like Klingons.
The sad part about this is that it was to defend their culture from internal forces in Japan, since Japan wanted to advance they couldn’t keep the samurai, that would be like trying to advance in Europe with a society still built around knights
Who else can't help but yell out "When the Winged Hussars arrived" after singing along with Shiroyama, lol
I'm guessing that's because Winged Hussars follows this song on the album?
New Year gift from Touchy Reactions) Boy, am I love this song!
to my knowledge, chris and tommy has always done something like they did to joakim in the hellfest video during that part of the shiroyama song, its probably something they do because they have a chance to while he stands so low with 1 leg out the side
I loved it
First song I heard from the "new Sabaton" back in the day, and immediately liked what Hannes does with the drums.
Bushido was partly used by the Japanese in WW2 as extremely few Japanese soldiers were captured alive compared to the estimated garrison numbers (for example the battle of Iwo Jima it was estimated that there was as many as 21k Japanese soldiers on the island... only 216 were captured) this trend happened throughout the Pacific battle after battle very low numbers captured. even the mini sub crews from pearl harbor were treated the same. if you look at the pictures of the minisub crews that were sent out to pearl you will see the crews of all four mini subs in the picture taken prior to pearl harbor, but only the crews of three in the memorial picture. the reason being the fourth sub's crew was captured by the Americans and thus were erased from the picture.
What a way to start a year with a banger song.
I've always loved history and love the way Sabaton tells of it. This song is special to me, because my teenage son just got so excited about history on the whole due to this.
If you ever hear the term "Death before Dishonor." That's the general mindset of the samurai.
All the best in the New 2022 Year to you and your viewers!
-with a lot of Sabaton songs 🙂
Thank you. Best to you and yours as well.
Thanks for this reaction Touchy, this is a song that reactors often surpass, it's a shame cause the song is catchy and the story is worth telling.
I hope u and your family had a great New Years Eve.
Thank You. You too.
The last samurai is a good movie which this song is based on the time period of the movie. It’s not based on the movie obviously but the movie and this song are hand in hand.
I highly recommed Sabaton - “The Last Stand” or “The Carolean’s prayer”
Love the format and glad we brought you back from the ledge after The Price of a Mile (LOL)!! Like I said Sabaton teaches history and some lessons are harder to take but still a must!! Here a real catchy song despite the story of the Code of the Warrior. Real great discussion topic of whether it was worth it or not. The real issue was the Warrior now was a commoner like the rest of men of Japan and that may of been the real issue, to die a warrior or live as a commoner the choice clearly was easy for these men to make.
Thanks
2022 is a good year
More or less yes this song is based on historical reality of The Last Samurai though obviously the real events are a little different than the movie.
My favorite stories/ songs you can check out are "Saboteurs" , "Inmate 4859", and "Far from Fame" .
All are on my list. Inmate 4859 is done and up on my Patreon
The Last Stand is probably my second favorite Sabaton album, behind Heroes (you never forget your first…)
Anyway, that album has an underappreciated song called “Last Dying Breath” that is about a last charge of Serbian forces against the Austrian-Hungarian forces in Belgrade. I really like this one and the history behind it. Even if you can’t film a reaction to it, I highly recommend listening to that after hearing your thoughts on Saigo’s decision in this video.
Thanks. It's on the list.
I can't recall if the Last Samurai film is the same specific battle, but yes, it is set in the same era with the modernization of Japan when the samurai class was being phased out.
Yes it was about this specific battle but wasn't historically accurate (still an incredible movie imo)
Just wanted to wish you a happy and healthy New Year! ✨
Thank You. You too.
Yep, it's about that battle, Battle of Shiroyama. But the movie wasn't too accurate, Cruise aside.
Looking at the manpower both sides had is chilling: 30.000(30 dead) against 500(all dead)...
I would say really if that castle had fallen to him things would be a lot different in history lol
The madness of these 500 people is not surprising, because this is the uprising of the Satsuma Principality. And their ancestors are madmen who entered the battle with an army superior in number. In the Battle of Sekigahara in 1600, Shimazu sided with the "Western coalition" led by Ishida Mitsunari against Tokugawa Ieyasu's army. The "Westerners" lost the battle, and their possessions were confiscated by the victors. The only exception was the Shimazu clan, whose troops did not flee, but attacked the enemy and, breaking through several dozen enemy ranks, including Ieyasu's own regiments, were able to retreat from the battlefield. For his courage, Tokugawa left their lands for Shimazu - the Satsuma Principality. they kept their lands for their bravery, therefore, honor was very important for their heirs.they didn't go to this battle out of desperation. Satsuma are fearless, proud warriors, heirs of shimazu.
Thanks for all the history.
For those men their pride *was* their life so it was really not an option to surrender
Rip the Samurai the birth of imperial Japan killed the old samurai way. Loving the sabaton reactions.
Happy new Year Touchy! Hope this year will be filled with blessings and happiness.
Thank for doing this one. Such a party song, but also a little sad when a whole culture gets killed off in the name of progress.
If you are looking for something a little different, You should check out Feuerschwanz. They released their new album yesterday and it sneaked in to be my favorite album of 2021. "Warriors Of The World United", "Memento Mori", "Untod Im Drachenboot", "Ultima Nocte" and "Krampus" all have awesome videos and I'm sure you will like it. (Their songs are mostly in German, so I would recommend checking out their covers first like "Warriors Of The World United" or "I See Fire" is a great place to start.) If you like it, I can send you a lot more suggestions for bands and songs.
PS: no codewords anymore for ppl that stayed till the end?
Thanks for watching till the end.
I'll check them out
@@TouchyReactions always! :D
Really love the way you structure these Sabaton reactions! It is, in my opinion, the perfect way to do it. One Sabaton song that gets way to little love but that is both a good song and interesting history is "1648".
Thanks Thomas, It's now on the list.
@@TouchyReactions Thank you 🥳 As with several of the songs on the Carolus Rex album this one is two sligthly different perspectives between the english and swedish versions. Here is a link to the swedish version with english text if you want to do the two perspectives instead of one live (I do not know if there is a live one). ua-cam.com/video/0NFLT66KWbE/v-deo.html
Love this song, if I did running, this would be a good song to run to 😆 last battle is a great song and Midway is pretty cool aswell
Fields of Verdun by Sabaton is a good one
love that one
Basically an adrenaline pumping version of Price of a Mile if you think about it, same with Great War
if no one has said it yet, you should check out Resist and Bite. The tale of 40 men tasked to hold against the oncoming blitzkrieg and making a hell of a show of it
We are all
I've already done it. You can find it on my channel.
Sabaton Heart of Iron
I just recorded my reaction to Hearts of Iron. It will be on Patreon tonight and UA-cam on the 30th.
Hopping for the "blood of bannockburn" reaction
It is now on the list.
@@TouchyReactions Woo
sengoku jidai is japanese civil war which means a century of country in war
One of the next Sabaton Videos you do you should check out Last Dying Breath
When Austro-Hungarian Empire and Hindenburg Empire Invaded Serbia to connect Austro and Germany to the Ottoman empire and the History video is great
Pretty sure "The Last Samurai" by Tom Cruise is based on this event. (Haven't seen it) :p
Yes it indeed is, but it isn't historically accurate
It's still a good and entertaining movie to watch I would recommend it to you
I believe you have not checked out Soldier of Three armies, it's a amazing song and about a man you seemed to love war. And maybe check out a Life time of War which is about the 30 year war
Thanks, it's on the list now.
Great song!
The next Sabaton song you should react to is Sabatons The Last Stand.
Another great song (as usual). 😉
But hey, dont forget to check another Swedish band; Brothers of Metal. Their female vocalist Ylva are great, and almost in the same league as Floor .
I recommend their song Kaunaz Dagaz, and their videos are hilourius in a funny way. Brothers of Metal are a viking metal band with glimpse in their eyes and arent taking them self to serious. Stay heavy!
👍🤘
brilliant! but please have a look on an almost forgotten Song, and a hardly known Battle, a total disaster! "Cliffs of Gallipoli" back then, Sabaton was more raw, but it fits perfect to that slaughter that had happenend
It is on my list. Thanks
I see that you have requested this twice. This song must be a favorite of yours.
@@TouchyReactions its just great! No Shirts, no Pants, but a harsh song about a military operation which went totaly wrong. only losses for nothing...and the Fans from Australia will love you
Save the body but damn the soul, is the way Saigo and his men would have seen it. Bushido and honour in death it was the only outcome. I wish i could stick to my own beliefs if i was in the same situation.. i hope i would, but i am not certain.
A bit late to the patreon party due to the holidays, but gotta say once more a great reaction.
Thanks
Excellent song along with The Last Stand and The Last Battle all from The Last Stand Album.
I would have to strongly suggest the last battle as the history part blew my mind.
In case you have done some of thees and I for got you should re do or edit your previously reaction videos as deep dives with history.
Let's just say the Last Samurai was loosely based on this
Though I might be the whitest of white men with my heritage, this song always spoke to me on a familiar and fundamental level.
My own family had a long history of knights and the like for the better part of the previous millennium, surviving some of Britain's' bloodiest
centuries as a warrior based family, but in the end chose to adapt rather then die for their honour when firearms took over the battlefield.
I'll always be grateful for them choosing to live, otherwise I wouldn't be here, but it'll always be something I feel conflicted about.
Excuse me for asking but what do you mean by "I might be the whitest of white men with my heritage"? I don't want assume but it sounds like someone told you because you are white or have white history and becuase of that you aren't allowed to take an interest or resonate with other cultures and countries because you are white you should never be ashamed of your skin and heritage regardless what happened.
I have that shirt 🤣

Day 3 of recommending The Great War, slightly depressing but also inspiring and definitly the most epic of their songs.
It's on the list
please react to the album "heroes" is one of the best I've heard
I am working through some of the songs from it.
Yeah. Hellfest has a really bad recording. Their audio's always been fucked.
