  • After many years of riding sport bikes, I finally got the opportunity to ride a Harley.
    Still in my sports bike state of mind, I decided to throw it around some bumpy narrow b-roads and even have a little dice with a chap on a speed triple!
    Never been a big fan of cruisers, but you can't turn down the chance to ride a Harley if someone offers it to you and I have certainly gained a better appreciation for their merits after riding one.
    Not one of my more informative videos I'm afraid. But it is probably one of the best sounding videos I've made!

    I've been a Harley owner for years. And it was fun to hear your commentary. most of what you said is very true. Riding a Harley is a unique feeling. Good video. Thanks for posting, as I said, it was fun to watch.

    Nice video. I own a Fat Bob and try to explain to my friends it is kind of toy. Riding for pure fun. Every time I take it for a ride, 1000 problems are cleared from my brain.

    No offence to those of us who ride a Harley...It was fun to see you get hooked on the Harley experience. It happened to most of us. Now we just enjoy becoming part of the breeze, the torque and the NOISE!

    I've owned a couple of Harleys and have just bought a 2016 Breakout. I also ride a Ducati 899 and I find "sweaty arse" to be more of a problem on the Ducati because of the way the pipes loop under the seat! LOL
    They get some unfair stick from sports bike riders in the UK - accusations like unreliability, not being modern and being far too expensive (and granted - they are expensive). But here's some interesting facts.
    1) Harley Davidsons are some of the slowest depreciating vehicles in the motor trade.
    2) They have modern technologies like fly by wire, ABS, alarms, immobilisers, keyless ignition and auto-cancelling indicators as standard. Mine even has servo controlled baffles!
    3) 70% of all Harleys ever made are still running! Isn't that incredible?
    I'm glad you tried one :) They're very different to sports bikes but they're awesome for different reasons. That's why I ride sports bikes and cruisers - they're great for different reasons.

    I'm looking into getting my first harley but I've been a little apprehensive due to living in the UK and not having huge sprawling roads like in the US where bikes like these thrive.
    Imagine my surprise finding a fellow Bristolian having a blast on the roads I grew up with. As soon as the video started I recognised Station Road and had to do a double take! This video has made my mind up on getting a bike. See you out on the road brother

    A friend just bought one, so I took it for a short ride. I was amazed at how smooth it was. quite unlike any Harley I'd ever ridden before. I could even see out of the mirrors. I did some research and found out that they have balance shafts in them now. I guess you can teach an old dog new tricks after all.

    Well done, and a welcome, fresh perspective. I've owned 'em all over 50 years of riding, and you hit it on the head. They're all bikes, each with unique virtues and failings. The cultural observations on biker mythology were funny and probably uncomfortable for some riders who take themselves too seriously! Ride safe - you have a new subscriber from the foothills of California (awesome roads).

    I subscribed after watching this vid. F what everyone think. I ride a 48 and the feeling is awesome and again yeah I'm not the stereotypical Harley rider (in the UK) but I've seen a broader appeal to them outside the UK. Everywhere I stop at lights, I CONSTANTLY get compliments about how awesome and cool the bike looks. On a typical day over a 2x10 Mike commute - about 3 to 4 compliments riding through traffic. I NEVER experienced that with my sports bikes. Love it! Ride safe!!!

Should have a new Ducati vid posted up here soon and my VFR is back on the road, so hopefully I'll have some more vids to post. Sorry they're not that regular, but really, the main reason I make these videos is to have a record of the bikes I ride. Haven't had any bikes to ride for a while, so no opportunities for making videos. Hopefully I'll get to take a 48 out soon. I like the idea of the xr1200. That looks like my kind of Harley!

    I was in Ireland a few years back and got talking to some guys at the pub, a rough one at that. We talked about bikes and they had jumped the pond from London on their BMW's and joked with me being a Harley rider but all in all it was in good fun. I will say most Harley bikes are for cruising but many people can show that they are just as crazy as sport bikes in their own way. Also, scraping the boards or pegs means you're riding it right!! I grinded my boards all day today and I wear a full faced helemet in America! lol.Nice post Brother!

    • @benniehitchcock
      @benniehitchcock  9 років тому +1

      rhall651 Haha! Yeah, Harley riders take a lot of flack from street bike riders. But like you say, with the right style of riding, you can still get some speed out of these things and even upset some street bikes on the right road. This bike didn't belong to me, so I was desperately trying not to scrape anything. But if I owned one of these, I think I'd be buying a new set of footpegs every week! Apart from the movement in the rear end, it grips well in the corners and feels like it can be cranked over a lot more than what the footpegs will allow. Can't hide the fact that this is a very heavy bike though, so it's a lot les forgiving when you get it wrong!

    • @nashvilleoutlaw
      @nashvilleoutlaw 9 років тому +1

      Bennie Hitchcock growing up my neighbor had a 79 lowrider with straight drag pipes. He would be throwing sparks in the corners off those pipes lol. 20 years later I still wouldn't try to keep up with him. Someone sideswiped him at a stop sign in fog and broke his leg. Still in the cast and my 13yo butt out there trying to kick start it so he could ride... I never got it cranked but it did make me do a hand stand on the handlebars a couple time when it kicked back on me lol good times

    • @benniehitchcock
      @benniehitchcock  9 років тому

      nashvilleoutlaw Yeah, I used to own an xr600, so I know all about the dreaded kick back! I'd love to ride an old Harley one day. Not sure anyone would lend me one though. To be fair, if I owned one, I probably wouldn't let anyone ride it either!

    Bennie Hitchcock I traded in a 2002 Honda Magna for a 2015 Breakout. I totally agree with what you in every way. Your video is definite a re-enforcement of what my thoughts were. I would not have bought it if it were my only bike. My other mike is a Kawasaki Concours C14 so the Breakout is a nice balance. Even though I have done some 200+ mile trips on the Breakout, I do most of my touring/commuting on the Conny. I cruise around on the Harley.

    3:32 - a bike that makes you utter that sound: buy it. People can hate on Harleys all they want, cite hp-per-liter numbers and lack of ground clearance, but the feel-good factor is hard to beat.

    Loved the video. I ride a Kawasaki 1400 zzr but I'm thinking of changing it for a HD next March. Possibly a Low Rider, maybe a Fat Boy or Fat Bob. I've had a few HD test-rides and the feeling seems to be the same.... just the most fun you can have on a bike! I don't care either what anyone thinks; go with your gut and ride what the hell you want! Harley's maxim right now is to understand a Harley Davidson, you have to ride one. I have a few friends who are very quick to knock Harley. Not one of the has ridden one! I rest my case! Have fun folks, and ride safe :-)

    Yes, Harley Davidson can be a fun bike to ride, I did some suspension work and performance upgrades to mine and I have a bike with good clearance [Harley] and goes pretty well. It can be really fun to ride and a crazy rush when under acceleration. Changing the front sprocket to a smaller one really motivates them as well. Great vid mate, good to watch.

    Great vid! As a off-road rider and sports bike rider I was the same as you, used to give Harley's shit, then I rode one (about 10 years ago) and had the exact same experience as you, just riding at slower speeds I found I was having so much fun. I still wasn't ready to buy one but it totally changed my opinion on them. Now I'm 34yo and perhaps grown some brains :) I've come to the conclusion my GSXR1000 is pointless for the street, if I had a race track close by then I'd see a reason to have it, but if you want a bike to have fun on at somewhat legal speed limits then a Harley is hard to beat in my opinion. On the sports bike it's like "ride the speed limit and be totally bored, or have fun and risk going to jail". Anyway to conclude I'm looking at buying a breakout or wide glide now. Thanks for the vid!

    The thing that baffles me about motorcycles in general after riding Harley's and other brands is the auto indicator left/right. It's so intuitive to just have left button for left indicator, right button for the right indicator and both cancel the blinkers when leaning back up out of a corner.
    Most other brands have more technology than Harley's granted, but this is so basic technology that's actually in it's simplicity so usefull ("natural feeling") when you use it, that it baffles me this isn't on every bike out there.

    It's partly your fault I bought a 48 and it's definitely your fault I bought a 2017 breakout (with a Diavel inbetween, but that was my Harley Dealer's fault!). You're spot on with both reviews and I am having a great time on the Breakout so far. The 48 you do slip off the back under full power over bumps but the breakout is great fun and in my opinion, looks epic! Keep reviewing and I hope Harley do you a great deal if you ever go for one as you sound fairly convinced you actually like them now. By the way, who cares what others think. If you're smiling and riding a bike which makes you feel like that, that's what it's all about, what you feel! \m/

    you got it on the nail head man its the feeling you get when you speed off on a harley the rolling thunder, the fealing your on a living thing. and you feel the freedom . thats what a harley is all about. metric bikes just ride but a harley lives and you become one and free . ive riddien all across the usa from cailifornina deserts to kansas prairies and there is no experiance finer than being on one of these bikes seeing the long road ahead which can be miles and miles and knowing it will take you there slow or fast but in a rumble thats for sure . enjoy best regagards. and at the end of the day the bashers still wish they felt the freedom of a harley rider.

    • @benniehitchcock
      @benniehitchcock  9 років тому

      Dav Che Thanks. I had a lot of fun ridding these Harleys. A different type of fun I'm not used to on a bike! I think every biker should ride a Harley at least once, just for the experience. I will say however that I don't think Harleys Have the monopoly on the feeling of freedom. On some roads, they can actually feel a bit restrictive. I've had a greater sense of freedom on other bikes, but that's more to do with the roads I was on I think. Harleys are a lot of fun at low speed though, but I get bored of low speed cruising, especially in a straight line for hour after hour.

    Awsome buddy, lol. It is a totally different feeling than Japanese bikes. I have a 98 softail custom pretty close to the Break Out but I can sure lay it down in the corners,. done the engine up a bit so it's fairly peppy for a Harley. I love running with the sport bikes just to hear what the guys have to say. They never expect me to keep up. Living in BC the bike runs out here are just a fantastic rippen through mountains. The sounds going up cranking on her as sounds reflect off the cliffs is like you said, addictive.If you ever get the chance to run around Castlegar, BC do it as it doesn't matter which way you go it is wow everywhere.jmo,

      Greg B Thanks. Glad you enjoyed it. I've done a video of a 2009 softail custom which i'll be uploading soon. I think I prefer the softail platform rather than the dynas or sportsters. They might not handle as well, but they're much smoother and more comfy. I think the fat boy is still my favourite Harley to ride at the moment. The breakout is my favourite to look at

    • @benniehitchcock
      @benniehitchcock  9 років тому

      Bob Frankenstein Wouldn't be my first choice of Harley for long distance. Not the comfiest ergonomics or the easiest to ride. Bars are a bit of a stretch, puts pressure on the back. Fat Boy is much more comfy, has better balance and is easier to ride. This bike was running Cobra pipes. They sound pretty good. Not as loud as the Vance and Hines, but I prefer that.

    Welcome to the club, Bennie!!! I'm a third generation HD rider (both grandfathers as well as my dad and many uncles and cousins). My handle is Toledo Tom (feel free to friend me on facebook if you wish). I ride a 2009 Crossbones.
    I was laughing out loud and applauding each time you cranked it up and said," I understand the appeal" "I'm smiling right now" " this is fun" and other shit like that! My dream is to some day vacation in the UK, and tour the whole place on a Harley. I hope to run into you and buy you a pint!
    Hey!!!! what was your set up for recording the video and especially the audio???
    P.S. Most of us don't give a fuck how cool we look or what the "citizens" think of us. They can SOD OFF (that's how you say it,right?) We're just having fun!!! :D

    Beautiful country where you are. You have to find a place where you can just cruise in 6th at about 60mph for about an hour. That's what a Harley does well.

    I met a former coworker , HD rider, that was deaf, hahaha. Over of 15 years riding a Harley. They are obnoxiously loud and too much vibration. I've never understood why people love them. I had a VTwin sportbike and sold it because vibration was too much. I prefer Parallel Twins or Triple engines, like Triumphs.

    The scrapeing of the pegs surprises me. I own two Harleys and the issue has never been a problem.Could it be that this bike was lowered?I'll really twisty test ride one before I think serious about buying one. Thanks for the review!.....................CHEERS!

    • @benniehitchcock
      @benniehitchcock  8 років тому

      +jeff brown Tbh, I scrape the pegs on all cruisers I ride. This breakout is stock apart from the cans. The breakout does have probably more of a problem with ground clearance compared to say the fat boy or ultra glide even. However, if you removed the stems on the end of the footpegs, it'll probably give you another 5 degrees of lean angle, but even then, you won't ever get any big angles on a cruiser. I'm used to riding sportbikes and streetbikes, so maybe it's more of an issue for me than it would be for someone from a cruiser backround.There's still fun to be had with fast cornering on a Harley though!

    • @electricritual4197
      @electricritual4197 8 років тому

      The factory pegs have extensions that come out on the bottom. There for demo ride purposes. It keeps them from getting scratched. But greatly reduces the lean angle. I've never heard anyone mention that on a review. They just say they scrape easy, instead of explaining why. That's why you've never scraped yours. Also some people over lean on turns. For example you can drive slow and lean a cruiser far enough to scrape the pegs without dropping it. It's typically people used to sport bikes that do this.

    • @electricritual4197
      @electricritual4197 8 років тому

      +Angel D I like to add more thing. Harleys are very low to the ground and have a low center of gravity. You do not have to lean the bike very far to go around the turn. However a sports bike or metric touring bike has a higher center of gravity. You sit much higher and you have to lean the bike a lot further then a cruiser.

    • @nickcahill8156
      @nickcahill8156 8 років тому +1

      +jeff brown its probably because hes used to riding sport bikes where you lean to turn more than you turn the bars. So maybe hes just leaning too much when going into the turns

    Have you ever tried a Star/Yamaha Raider ??,,very similar in looks to the Breakout

    • @benniehitchcock
      @benniehitchcock  8 років тому

      +BeaglePower G I've ridden the custom version of the Raider. It's called the XVS1300 here in the UK. I rode it over a year ago though and it was the first proper cruiser I'd ridden, so difficult to compare to the breakout. As I remember, the yamaha felt a touch quicker and lighter, but i still had the same problem with footpegs scraping in corners, but then that happens with all cruisers I ride! The Harley does sound better though imo. The Yamaha actually had more engine vibes than the breakout, but felt a bit more lively overall. Handled better than the breakout too I reckon.
