He wasn't the first cast. James Purefoy was originally cast and they shot for six weeks before he dropped out. Some of the scenes are still Purefoy with Weaving dubbed in over in adr.

And for a role of a masked man on a mission, who is emotionally scarred, and highly learned, I think the burden of playing the character falls on the actors vocal skills rather than his expressions. I am sure James would've prepared extensively for that, but we will never see that and Weaving's natural voice and pronunciations were just amazing for this role.
He does an awesome job every time. He was particularly entertaining as Agent Smith as well. He delivers amazing dialogue. The writers should be congratulated too. The alliteration in his speech here, for example, is genius.

Shed light on how much we need each other, how our deepest feelings and moments are shared with mortals, the irreplacable value of those who are forgotten. Ideas are eternal but they arent humans, humans are destructable and forgotten but they color life. We're used to put ideas and immortality in such a high pedestal that individuals are seen as irrelevant and this is the first time i see this idea being challenged and humans being valued. This makes me really sad when i remember how awful humans are for each other, it's unnecessary.
We are meant to seek understanding the eternal, but on that road we must always cherish our basic and mortal humanity and use it as a guiding light in our quest. If we start seeing human as irrelevant, it means we are on a wrong path. This is the starting grain of truth of Buddha's enlightenment.
Guy died like a boss. Broke his own neck so he couldn’t be drawn live. It didn’t go down like this in reality- they hung you but didn’t break your neck, just choked you while they draw you, exposing your intestines. Guy knew this and jumped to break his neck, killing himself instantly (significant for a Catholic). They drew him while dead anyway.

They ended up with the bio weapon because he escaped and burned the camp down with all the research on the soldier program. In the process he lost the ability to feel pain, and also suffered heinous burns across his body which is why he wears the mask. Also a fuckin wild detail that nobody ever talks about when discussing the character, is that he does all of this whilst blind. His eyes were burned out in the fire.

Without serious change the American economy is going to collapse and leave you open to even worse shit.

Well, he was a brilliant stage actor, so maybe quite a bit of rehearsal, but not many takes. For plays you have to get monologuing right everytime in one take.

When I first saw this, I was not in a good mood. I thought this was overrated. I watched it again a year later and was angry at myself for not appreciating the masterpiece that it was.
It’s crazy how this movie still hasn’t aged a day. From cinematography to content. This is such an amazing story!
