It isn't the mountains ahead to climb that wear you out; it's the pebble in your shoe. Keep happy mood everyday and keep making progress every day. I’ve made many videos teaching Chinese in a humorous way. About 3000 Chinese characters cover 99% characters in newspapers and books. From my previous videos you can learn more than 400 common characters. There are about 120 commonly used Chinese character radicals. From my previous videos, you can learn more than 80 basic radicals. I’ve spent about 100,000 hours studying English humor and Western culture, and many years studying Chinese culture and jokes. My native language is Chinese.
I am Cambodian-American, but I have someChinese descent, hence my last name. A lot of Southeast-Asians are mixed with Chinese. This motivates me to learn Chinese to connect with distant roots.
Thank you for the positive feedback! We're glad you are enjoying studying with us! Are you going through the Beginner Conversational Course on YoyoChinese.com?

Chinese is such a beautiful language. I would love to learn it but 1. I want to continue with my Spanish and 2. It seems so different, with how pronouncing one word you can go from 'mother' to 'horse'!
Chinese IS quite different than English or Spanish, but in many ways those differences make it easier (no gendered nouns, no verb tenses, root characters that fit together logically like building blocks, etc.). Check out our unique approach to teaching tones and see if we can help you master these sounds: ua-cam.com/video/3wV8B4bx1lM/v-deo.html

We recommend you first get a foundation for spoken Mandarin before you start to learn Chinese characters. It’s a lot easier to learn how to read and write when you already know the vocabulary and sounds formed by the characters you are learning. And it’s a lot easier to focus on your pronunciation and the basic grammar and vocabulary of spoken Mandarin when you aren’t also trying to memorize hundreds of characters. We recommend you first complete Level 2 of the Beginner Conversational Course before you start our Chinese Character Course I. At that point you have enough of a foundation for the language to start learning characters, and it will help you remember new vocabulary as you continue in the conversational courses. Start with Lesson 1 of our Beginner Conversational Course here: goo.gl/JTGNNs
I might be interested in your intermediate course but would like to know first, how long do I have access to the course material once purchased? i.e.is there a time limit of access? Thank you.
Hi Alwa! There's no time limit. You purchase the course you want to study and get access to those lessons and reviews with no expiration date or need to renew. I hope you enjoy studying Mandarin with us! 加油 (jiā yóu)! 😊
It really depends on what level you are hoping to reach! If you can study for about 30 minutes a day, six days a week, you can complete our Beginner Conversational Course in less than six months, and be able to have a conversations on a variety of subjects, with good tones and pronunciation and grammar. Our students that go through all of our courses reach a very high level of speaking and listening comprehension, to the point where the lessons are entirely in Mandarin and use real-speed, real world dialogues between native speakers. That high level takes at least 18 months to reach, but it's a very realistic goal! The main thing is to practice every single day. Learning a language is acquiring a skill, like learning to play an instrument. It's by practicing every day that you become better, even if you only have 15 minutes to work at it. I hope that helps!

Good question! Chinese tones and musical pitches aren't the same thing. The tones are about relative movement, so it's not difficult for Chinese singers to hit the right notes and still have the correct tones. I hope that helps!
What Yoyo said. Chinese 'tones' are more like interval patterns rather than absolute pitches. So let's say a composer wants to use the word (xiè) it's a downward interval movement so you can write a descending M2= B to A, or P4= C to G, etc. and you wouldn't have trouble identifying the word. Now sometimes the tonal pattern doesn't match the melody and in that case the singer either ignores the 'tone' and sings the melody as is, leaving the listener to use context to figure out what they mean, or what happens most of the time (almost subconciously) the singer does the 'tone' microtonaly. It's hard for me to explain this with words, if I had a piano and could sing for you I could better show you what I mean. It sounds more complicated and unnatural than what it really is; singers of all languages do these microtonal movements all the time, just that chinese singers do it to preserve the word's meaning as best as possible.
I first tried Pimsleur and it was ok but I wasn't learning characters. I am now doing HelloChinese but when I try to speak to natives they don't recognize what I'm saying. Does your program offer some Skype with the instructor s ?

There are hundreds of individual dialects, divided up into 5 main groups. However, when people refer to Chinese, they usually mean Mandarin Chinese, the official language of China.
Louis Felix “Chinese” is technically a macro language, which means it’s a language family with many different dialects. Each region of China has its own dialect. Mandarin Chinese is the official language of Mainland China and also Taiwan, making it the most widely spoken form of Chinese. Typically, when people say “Chinese” they really mean Mandarin, but it is important to know that “Chinese” technically refers to all dialects in the language family of Chinese including Mandarin, Cantonese, Shanghainese, Wenzhounese, Taiwanese, and many others. Mandarin is based off the Northern dialects of Chinese, specifically the Beijing dialect known as Pekingese. What makes Cantonese so important is it’s the Lingua Franca of the Guangdong (Canton) province and by extension Hong Kong and Macau, who have had tremendous economic influence over the years.
