- FULL DISCLOSURE: IF YOU DECIDE TO DO THIS MODIFICATION TO YOUR OWN TRUCK MAKE SURE YOU GET A GAUGE CLUSTER THAT MATCHES THE SAME YEAR OF YOUR VEHICLE. THERE WERE CHANGES TO THE WIRING ACROSS THE YEARS. FAILURE TO DO SO CAN RESULT IN YOUR VEHICLE NOT CHARGING PROPERLY AS WELL AS DISRUPT THE ABS SYSTEM.
!!!!DO THIS MODIFICATION AT YOUR OWN RISK!!!!
If I had known it was this easy to add a tachometer to my truck I would have done this YEARS AGO!!! I'm especially glad that I didn't just go and buy a aftermarket tach. in the past that would've required me to drill into my dashboard. Even though I installed the tachometer gauge cluster in my 1994 truck without any issues I made the mistake of buying a gauge cluster that wasn’t the correct year (I purchased a 1992 gauge cluster) which resulted in the alternator to not charge properly, and left me stranded on the side of the road. Instead of hunting down another tach. gauge cluster somewhere I ended up going back to the gauge cluster that was originally in my vehicle to start off with. I still wanted to leave this video posted because this modification does work, but take it from me you have to be EXTRA CAREFUL to find the right year gauge cluster. Ford changed the wiring for the gauge clusters in the middle of the production years, so someone might think they’re buying the same year cluster when in reality they’re a couple of months off. If you're thinking of doing this to your own truck and you have any questions or concerns let me know down in the comment section below and I'd be happy to help you out. Thanks for watching!

Doesn’t get much easier than that! Kinda weird how so many manufacturers in the ‘90s came down with “tach delete fever” lol. A full set of gauges makes the truck look so much more complete. Well done!
Pretty simple! I wish I knew what I know now 3 years ago🤣! My guess is that Ford tried to save a buck or two, but I agree it really completes the truck!👍
Great video, after watching I went and found one at my junk yard for $35 and installed it. Best part is I took my other one back to the junk yard and got my money back so mine was basically free. Love having the tachometer. It also bothered me that my truck didn’t have one.
That’s awesome! I’m so glad to hear this video was able to help you out! The fact that you swapped it out for free is a truly a great deal. Thanks for watching!
Thanks man, appreciate the tutorial, went and picked one up at a junkyard for $50, cleaned it up. Looks pretty brand “new” for its age. Works smooth.
Great to hear! Was it a gauge cluster the same year as your truck?
@@ydocproductions5593 yeah that’s the thing I just read the description and didn’t check. But I do believe I did caught a glimpse of the year and do believe it’s for a 97
@@albertfuentes552 Right on, good to hear👍

It’s one of my talents😄
Well I'll be dipped, something easy on a newer Ford.
Thanks for sharing.
JT Thill Thanks for watching!😀👍
Perfect , going through the same thing with my 93. Also it helped me fix my 'lazy' gear cable.
I’m so glad to hear that! Just make sure if you do this swap that you get a gauge cluster the same year as your truck, otherwise it won’t charge properly. Thanks for watching😀👍
Great overall video, and camera work ! Well explained when it needed to be, and edited when appropriate. Your video motivated me to change mine, thanks !!
Thank you so much for the kind words I’m glad the video was helpful! Just remember to get a gauge cluster that is the same year as your truck otherwise it might not charge properly😀👍
Did this to my '92 f150 a few years back. Very easy change over.
That’s great to hear👍! Thanks for watching
Bro just saved me so much time and money. now off to a yard here soon lol. Great and informative video, man. Hope you still got the truck.
I’m glad the video was helpful! Just make sure you get a gauge cluster that is the same year as the truck. otherwise your truck won’t charge properly. Best of luck with your swap😀👍
Tks Cody your expectations are spot on, I'm looking forward to doing that to my 96 Ford.
I’m glad the video was helpful! Just make sure you get a gauge cluster that is the same year as your truck otherwise it won’t charge properly. Thanks for watching😀👍
Hi Cody, i like your video. it helped me to realize what i needed to do to add a tach. i also got a cluster for a 92 for my 94 f150. I downloaded the pin outs for both years and swapped a few wires, made one wire longer and it now works just fine. the connector pins are labeled 1-14 on both the black and grey. i moved 1B to 11G, 14B to 12G, 12G to 14B and swapped 2G with 3G. you have to make the 12G wire longer to be able to reach. You will also have to change out the Left Turn signal/Fuel Reset/Charge light overlay with one from a 92 but it works. The 94 overlay has the Lft turn/Theft/Air Bag. Hope this helps you out.
Hi Nick I’m so glad the video was helpful to you! Also happy to hear you you were able to figure out a way to get a 92 tach cluster to work in your 94 (PRETTY COOL!!). I still only recommend people buy gauge clusters that are the same year as their truck, but that was a really smart swap, and it’s nice to hear that it is possible to use any year gauge cluster with just a little bit of work😀👍! Thanks for watching!
Excellent video, I did this to my ‘99 Ford Ranger since it didn’t have a tach either. The process on those is so much more complicated if you want to retain your original mileage though.
That’s awesome! Sounds like it was a pretty in depth swap, but I’m glad it worked out for you!😀👍
Love this channel. I've had 7 obs Fords and currently have a 97 F250 HD. Looks exactly like yours but has the 5.8. You've given me so many ideas. Keep the vids coming!

Ahhh man...what a great helpful video...! Thanks so much for sharing this!! Same year cluster for your same year truck is important info 👌 & New subscriber to your channel. I own a 94 F150 4.9l 5spd w/263k miles still going running strong Clean great condition.
I’m glad the video helped you out👍! Ya as long as you’ve got the same year cluster you’re good to go. 263k miles is incredible! The fact that it’s a 5 speed makes it that much cooler. Thanks for watching and welcome to the channel😀👍!
Don't throw anything away. Put online and sell it. There is always somebody out there that my need it.
That’s really good advice! They definitely aren’t making these parts anymore.
I did this on my 1992 E-350 many years ago. However, when you install an F series cluster in an E series you have to redo many of the wires as the wiring harnesses are a little different. Basically I'd just trace out the wires and where'd they do and just pull the pins out of the harness and rearrange them on my harness.
I'm ready to do that to my xlt,got a complete
Instrument cluster with tach for 20bucks.good info/video 👍😁🏜️
That’s awesome! I’m glad you were able to get one for so cheap😀👍. Just make sure the cluster is the same year as your vehicle and you should be all set.

Mark Randall Hahaha That was fantastic as always🤣!
So what you did was get a new chassis that accommodated a tach. Good show. As far as aligning up the selection needle ( if you ever need to) on the gear selector on the cluster...there is a small black wheel on the cable that you had to release from the gear shifter. That little round nob attached to that white cable adjusts the alignment on the pointer to P N D12.
You’re exactly right. The plastic inside is shaped differently because the layout of the gauges isn’t the same. Whoever designed this generation of Ford trucks was really smart. Putting in a small wheel to align the needle pointer is a really great idea. Thanks for the kind words Johnny,😀👍
I just did this to mine. Now the ABS is on. Going to run the scanner on that and see what's going on. Also, I cracked up when I saw the third hand pop in there. I was like what the heck?
When it comes to changing out these gauge clusters you’ve gotta make sure that it’s the same year as your truck. Otherwise it opens the door to problems. Read the description of the video to find out why😀👍. Ya I had a little help swapping out all those parts LOL🤣

I did this in my XL. Being a 5 speed, I really didn't like not having a tachometer.
I’ll never understand why Ford didn’t put tachometers in their trucks. Especially the manual trans trucks🤷🏼♂️. My guess is that it had something to do with money!🤣
@@ydocproductions5593 It's how they get you to buy the next level of options. Whether it is a $24K truck or a $65K truck, it's still the same truck.

Great video brother! You did a awesome job, I’m just like you I always wanted a a tach in my trucks whether they are standard or not. Sorry I haven’t been commenting much, been making my rounds around our little community letting you guys know I’ve been MIA. My stomach bug that I mentioned in my last upload floored me. daisbest5.0 Ya it’s a cool that Ford put the same wiring harness’ in no matter what kind of gauge cluster you had. I have to warn you though, make sure you get the same year of gauge cluster as your vehicle otherwise your truck won’t charge properly. Happy hunting!👍
@@ydocproductions5593 yeah I read about that, I have a 92 so I know that 92-93 will work
daisbest5.0 Right on👍! I made the mistake of putting in a 92 in my 94 Ford and it’s a LOOONG STORY, but let’s just say it’s not worth the headache to buy a different year cluster🤣!
Awesome!!! It really should have been there all along... subbed!
I agree, and thank you. Welcome to the channel. Just make sure that if you do this swap you get a gauge cluster that is the same year as your truck otherwise your vehicle won’t charge properly.👍
You need to make sure the cluster you swap is within the adjacent year of your truck ... or the alternator will not charge your battery
That’s absolutely true!👍
Just spent "days" "here". Many trips to the parts store for alternators. Careful with LED light swaps too ... might not provide the right resistance on the "charge system" circuit to "excite" the alternator. Was a "long class". Lol
Awesome video, I didn’t know it would be this easy.
Thanks! Ya it’s a really simple swap. Just make sure you get a gauge cluster that is the same year as your truck and you’re good to go😀👍
Now one thing that wasn't mentioned and im not sure if it is accurate but if it is its important is that you have to get a cluster for the engine that your truck has so 6 cyl or 8 cyl, the size doesn't matter but number of cylinders does
I’ve heard that too, however I don’t think it matters wether it’s a 6cyl or 8cyl but what DOES matter is wether it’s a gas or diesel gauge cluster. Also the gauge cluster has to be the same year as your truck otherwise it won’t charge properly.
There's a military truck Canada used. It's a 1976 Chevy military truck. It's a 1-1/4 ton truck. They all used a 350 small block,th350 transmission,np203 transfer case ( full time 4x4),Dana 44 from axle and a 14 bolt rear. Then they had quarter inch thick skid plates, military grade grille guard, blackout lights and the jump plug to jump other trucks. There's some photos of them if you look up "Canadian 5/4 ton" on google

great detail information on the simple swap and looks great. was the cluster from the same size engine? did it matter? thanks
Hi William I believe the gauge cluster was from a v8 however it doesn’t matter wether it’s a v6 or v8. The only thing you have to be sure of is that it isn’t a diesel gauge cluster and the cluster has to be the same year as your truck. Thanks for watching👍
That's wonderful that guy has 4 hands
Comes in handy when needed🤣
Lifesaver, quick question, would swapping in a whole new cluster with the tach work? Or do you need to keep the OG speedo for the mileage?
Hi, You could swap in a whole new cluster with a tachometer, but the great thing about this swap is that the speedometer sections are universal so you can keep the same mileage on your truck. Not only is keeping the original speedometer the legal thing to do so the mileage is correct when you decide to sell it in the future, but also you keep the same PSOM (Programmable Speed Odometer Module) and wouldn’t have to recalibrate it if you put in a new one. So in my opinion it’s worth keeping the original Speedometer section when you do this swap. Hope all that made sense and helps. If you have anymore questions feel free to ask😀👍
Down below I’ve linked an article which has helped out many people who are about to take on this swap:

Thanks for the great video, I have a '96 F150 Eddie Bower Edition 5.0 V8 without a tach and I would like to add one to it. You mentioned that it has to be of the same year, what about transmission and engine size? Thanks
Great question JR. It doesn’t matter what engine or transmission size you have (excluding Diesel engines) just as long as it’s the same year gauge cluster. Reason being the gauge clusters had different wiring in them from the 92-96/97 year trucks. Hope that helps and good luck😀👍

Did you have to use a 92 cluster with a tach? I've heard conflicting reports that the mid 90s clusters won't work on the early 90s
@@rolandsgarage8640 That’s exactly right. Ford changed the wiring on the gauge clusters throughout the years. Ford would even change the wiring mid year, so you’d want to do your research before buying one. Id highly recommend you read the article below. It would clear up any confusion you might have.😀👍

OK hears one for ya , i have a 93 f150 that i put a 3.9 cunnins i and ive tryed to put a ford tack in it and just cant find a way to make it work. like you chanel keep up the good work.
Badger bob Thank you sir I appreciate it! Hhhmmm🤔 Well since it was previously a gas truck I believe Ford wired the tachs. to the ignition coils. Now that it’s a 4BT diesel I’m not quite sure. I can only go off what other people have done in the past, and that’s usually routing the tach wiring to the stator of the alternator. There’s a couple of videos out there where people add tachs. to their diesels using that technique, and also some good forums off the internet as well.
4.9 I6's will run at 3k rpm for a lifetime.
Originally designed as a tractor motor, the older Ford I6 runs at 3k for peak combination of efficiency, torque and horsepower.
That idea carried over into the 4.9 I6.
The only real wear on the lower end of the I6 occurs in the top 90% of the powerband.
Keep the pedal below that + good oil maintenance and the lower end can easily last 500k+. Easily.
It wasn't broke so they didn't fix it.
The 4.9l is a great engine. One of the best engines ford ever produced. Wish they still had it around in modern vehicles.
If you don't think your tach is accurate, you can go through disassembly again down to the bare gauges. using a dwell tach meter to gather the actual RPMs from under the hood. compare that to what the tach reads on the dash. 3000 RPM's sounds like a lot at 60 especially if you have overdrive. Check the tag on your differential and see what your gear ratio is. If your tach dwell reading is not consistent with your dash tach you can reset it by taking two spoons and removing the tach needle carefully. There will be a tiny needle in the hole where the needle came off. If your tach reads 1000 RPM's on the dash at idle and the dwell reads 500 RPMS reinstall the needle back in the tach while the truck is running to coincides with the tach dwell meter. Just be very careful to get the tiny needle inside the tach lined up with the tach indicator needle. It may take several tries.
That’s all really good info. I think that the tach was correct because I only had a 3 speed in the truck (C6 trans), so that along with the 4.10 axle gears is probably the reason why it was 3,000 RPM.
@@ydocproductions5593 3 speed with 4:10's surely will give you a high RPM. How did you end up with a 3 speed? What year is your truck? surely you must have overdrive....NO?
@@johnnyohness6610 My truck is a 94. My only guess is why it doesn’t have a 4 speed is either it was a cheaper factory option, or maybe even special ordered for that specific transmission.
Agreed. I’ve got a 4:10 rear end on my ‘97, and my tach reads 2000 at 60mph.

Hey Cody, what model did you pull the new cluster out of? Im getting my grandads '93 F250 here soon and I really like this vid. Thanks!
Hey Luke, I got this gauge cluster out of a junk yard. It doesn’t matter if it’s a f-150, f-250, or f-350 as long as you get a gauge cluster that is the same year as your truck it should work👍.
Linked below is an article going through the whole process and does a really good job explaining some of the questions you might have:
www.ford-trucks.com/articles/installing-an-oem-tachometer-in-a-1992-1996-f-150-or-bronco/
I've heard before that you need to check the circuitry on the back of the board for an 8 or 6 cylinder marking. Does that not matter if you're just swapping new gauges into your original cluster housing?
I don’t think that matters whether it’s from a 6 or 8 cyl. engine. From my research you need to make sure the gauge cluster is the same year as your truck. Otherwise the vehicle won’t charge properly.
@ydocproductions5593 found this out the hard way unfortunately 😂 Cluster I bought was from a 93 8 cylinder. I have a 95 6 cylinder.... truck was NOT happy lol
Cool mate simple job great result and 3000 rpm at 60mph dose seem a bit high what is your truck idling at?
metal art Thanks Metal Art! I’m really happy with how it turned out. It idles around 800 RPM. The reason it has such high RPMs at 60mph is because it has 4.10 gears and only a 3 speed transmission.
@@ydocproductions5593 yer right not the best for highway driving and fuel economy.
metal art The only way I’d get better fuel economy is if I pushed my truck out of a plane.....
🤣 good one.
Had a Ford van with that C-6 transmission, no overdrive, that's pretty normal for them. Bullet-proof transmission though, designed for hauling and pulling. Current '92 Ford 7.3 IDI diesel has overdrive, 70 mph at 1900 RPM.
Great video. I'd like to do this to my 95 F150. Question, where did you buy the tach cluster and the skinnier secondary clusters?
Thank you! I managed to find that gauge cluster at a junk yard for $30. Wherever you decide to buy one just make extra sure you get a gauge cluster that’s the same year as your truck👍
Ok so after watching this I just did the same thing. I have a 1996 F-350 with a 5.8 gas. I got the new cluster from a 1995 F-150. Everything is working tach included as it should including all the warning lights, the only issue I now have is that the ABS light is staying on where as before with the original cluster it would come on for the "lamp check" and then stay off. I even put the original cluster back in to double check. So to recap, ABS light now stays on while engine is running with the different cluster that has the tach, any idea why?
Hi DK Dani, that is something that happens when the gauge cluster isn’t the same year as your truck. I wouldn’t recommend continuing to drive your truck with the ABS light on. Down below is a link to an article article better explaining the gauge cluster swap process. I hope this was helpful and you get the ABS light fixed soon as well👍. Take care

@@ydocproductions5593 gotta thanks. The only thing I think may be tricky on this is that 250 and 350's were still OBD1 in 96. And 150's were OBD2 in 96. I have 2 trucks, my 96 F-150 is OBD2 and my 96 F-350 is OBD1. Not sure how that could play a role in this, I figured 95 150's were OBD1 so would be more compatible with my 96 F-350
Well I did some work to my 99 dodge ram. It's running a ton better. The more it's drovd the better it gets
Old Croney's Garage Great news!👍
Excellent! Did you make the upgrade on Ford ranger 1988?
Hi, sorry but I made this video specifically for the 92-97 ford full size trucks. That being said you should go to a junk yard and try to find a Ford Ranger with a tachometer gauge cluster and see if it has the same connections as the one in your truck😀👍
Can you offer any insight into converting a 4.5k diesel tach to be compatible with a 4.9l gasoline? In a 95 F150. 4.5k is literally a perfect tachometer for the 4.9l
I’m sorry but the diesel and gasoline tachometers are completely different when it comes to internal wiring. It wouldn’t even work for your truck. If you decide to do this swap it doesn’t matter what gas engine you use. What is absolutely crucial is that you use a tachometer that is the same year as your truck. If you don’t do that your truck won’t charge properly. Good luck with your swap😀👍
I subbed maybe you are still keeping up with comments from old videos, this whole cluster thing is killing me, lol. Now did I just watch you switch gauges out of a cluster you bought into your original cluster? That won’t work for me, I’m trying to restore like nearly brand new a 93 f-150 xlt , I’ve gone over the frame and drive line every inch of it all rust removed and every seal and bearing that could be changed got changed. Every single piece of the braking system replaced with new stuff including the steel brake lines. I put a flat bed on it as it’s what I preferred, and I’m to the inside of the cab now. The truck started as a automatic and someone before me changed it to a manual, to my good luck they did an excellent job making the switch, the only thing they didn’t change was they left the original cluster with the gear indicators for the auto trans and absent tach. I have a 5 speed 93 F150 xlt 4x4 just like the only I’m restoring except it’s a 300 6 banger, restore is a 5.0 liter v8. I can’t just stick the gauges on my cluster, the plugs are the same but they are oriented different on the cluster from the 6 cylinder truck. I’m wondering if I can just install my odometer into the cluster from the 6 cylinder truck? I’m betting I probably can’t. I watched your video and figured I would ask, maybe you would know, either way your video was informative and too the point, my kind of vid! So I subbed.
Hi sir, when I did this swap I bought my gauge cluster at a junk yard and put my odometer from my truck and put it in the tachometer gauge cluster I had bought. To answer your questions however about swapping your gauge clusters from your two trucks, the short answer is yes. You can take the odometer from your 93 F-150 you’re restoring and swap it in the cluster from the 6cyl truck (that way you also keep the original mileage to your vehicle) . One big detail that you HAVE TO BE SURE of is that the gauge cluster you are using is the same year as your truck. If you don’t the truck won’t charge properly, and you could mess up the ABS system of your vehicle. The article I linked at the bottom does a real good job explaining that. A gauge cluster without a factory tachometer has a plastic housing that simply won’t allow you to take the gauges from a factory tachometer gauge cluster and swap it in. The plastics are simply just molded differently from the factory. To be clear though the center odometer sections of either gauge cluster are identical.
I hope all of that made sense and helps answer your questions. It sounds like you have one awesome OBS Ford. I think you’d like the small video series I’ve posted recently of restoring a 1993 F-150. Thanks so much for subscribing and welcome to the channel!😀👍
Here’s the article better explaining the process of swapping out gauge clusters below:
www.ford-trucks.com/articles/installing-an-oem-tachometer-in-a-1992-1996-f-150-or-bronco/
I swapped today, lights are not working, maybe because I installed LEDs, but the main thing is that the ABS it's flashing. Sadly, RPMs and all the rest are working. I got it used from eBay. I paid a lot, anyway I think they'll accept returns, I'm going to have to pay shipping. Mine it's a 96 XL the eBay one is a 95.
Hi zh9119. I’m not exactly sure why the lights wouldn’t be working, but if you ABS light is flashing means you have the wrong year of gauge cluster for your truck. What I tell everyone in the comment section that wants to do this swap is it’s ABSOLUTELY IMPERATIVE you get the same year gauge cluster as your truck otherwise your vehicle won’t charge properly. I’m sorry to hear you’ve had so much trouble with it. I hope you can return the one you bought and exchange it for the right one. Let me know what happens.
@@ydocproductions5593
I contacted the eBay seller, awesome guy, he refunded me the money already and he'll send me a free return label on Monday. I think you're right, I was tempted because the title said "94-96 F-150" and the pictures had written '96 Bronco, on the back of the cluster. Then, when I received it, I saw clearly the F number with a 5 after. About the lights, I thought I had a bad fuse or I shorted out lol, but I installed back the original XL cluster and all the lights are working now. Thanks for your prompt answer. Tomorrow and Saturday, I'll go to check some LKQs but it's hard to find the same year and the cluster waiting for you there lol, there is always someone who goes first.
@@ydocproductions5593 Today I received the F6 cluster, I just connected it to test without swapping the PSOM. IT WORKS! Everything, including lights! I drove some blocks till I was sure that including the temp was working. Yeah, that proofed what you said, F5 boards are not compatible with F6. I'm waiting for a new glass cover that I ordered, and then I'll swap the PSOM with mine. Sadly, the one I purchased has only 135K miles and mine has 172K lol. Thanks a lot for your help!
@@zh9119 That’s so great to hear you got the gauge cluster working! I have no idea why Ford wouldn’t just use the same gauge cluster wiring throughout the 92-97 years, but it matters quite a bit. I’m happy that it all worked out!😀👍
was the cluster of a 4.9 or V/8?
Yo this dude has four hands-I couldn’t imagine.
Makes working on it a lot easier🤣
That was way to easy👍👍
If I can do it anybody can🤣! Thanks for watching!👍
Hi got a 92f150 truck with no tach, and bought 94 tach cluster on ebay to do a swap it should work and plug in right. I got 127000 miles on my original cluster . Don't know how many miles on the 94 cluster what do you think thanks jim
Hi Jim, that’s a great question. Ford changed the wiring in the gauge clusters between the years of the Old Body Style Ford trucks. Everything might look the same when it comes to hooking up the wiring harness and bolting it to the dash for example, but internally they are simply wired different. Which means the 1994 gauge cluster you bought won’t work in your 1992 F150 because it’ll cause your alternator not to charge. What I tell everyone is that if you want to do this swap make sure you get the same year gauge cluster as your truck. Sorry to give you the bad news, but I would recommend you return the gauge cluster you bought off eBay and get one that matches the year as your truck.
Hope that answers all your questions about this swap. If you do however have any more questions to ask I’m here to help. Take care👍
I’ve also linked an article down below that helps explain this gauge cluster swap and is a great resource to have:
www.ford-trucks.com/articles/installing-an-oem-tachometer-in-a-1992-1996-f-150-or-bronco/
My ? Does it matter which speedo section you use? For the swap or are the speedo /odometer the same in both. I would like to keep the proper odometer reading.
Hi, the speedometer/odometer is the same throughout, so you can keep the original odometer and correct miles on your truck. I have to warn you though. You have to make absolutely sure that the gauge cluster you buy is the same year as your truck, otherwise your truck might not charge properly. Good luck with your truck👍
I have 1992 ford ranger whiteout tachometer so I got one in junkyard for 30 dlls, but the tachometer still don't work, cause the prints show the term points is not the same
Finally I make it work!!
Hi Cody. I’m currently doing this swap on my truck. I when to hook the cluster back up and for some reason, most when on turn the lights on, most of the back lights don’t turn on. I tried pulling the bulbs out and rotating them 180 degrees but I got nothing. Seams like only one light in the top left hand corner turns on and that’s it. Any ideas??
Well the first thing that came to mind is their possibly burnt out (very common for these trucks), but regardless if that’s not the case I’d still make sure the gauge cluster is the same year as your vehicle. I hope that helps feel free to ask with any more questions you might have😀👍
Ford was NOT SMART having a standard wire harness, they were CHEAP. Some bean counter made the determination that it was overall COST EFFECTIVE to do it this way. But, yes, it's darn HELPFUL to us folks who want to do upgrades.
Reading some of the other comments it appears I need to go to the junk yard and find a ford which Has a TAC in the dash, just to have find the right one
Yup I would check your local salvage yard and see what you can find. However, you have to get a tachometer that is the same year as your truck otherwise your vehicle won’t charge properly. Good luck with the swap😀👍!
well said dear
tasha shaback Thank you so much!
I picked up a junkyard cluster with a tach but i realized its got an analog rolling type odometer instead of the digital readout on my truck. Can i still put the tach from it in my trucks cluster?
Hi Aidan good question , the thing I tell everyone who wants to do this swap is the same advice/directive I’ll lend you. It’s ABSOLUTELY IMPERATIVE you get a gauge cluster that is the same year as your vehicle otherwise your vehicle won’t charge properly. I hate to say it but the one you bought is no good. I don’t know why Ford chose to make it that way, but it is what it is🤣. I hope that answered your question and if you need more help don’t hesitate to ask. Good luck and let me know how it turns out😀👍
Cody i have a 95 f150 stick and would love to know where you got your information from regarding the Tachometer be nice to know what your rpm is at say 45 miles in third gear
Hi Arnold, The biggest issue (and this is the same thing I tell everyone who asks questions about this swap) is that you NEED to find a gauge cluster that is the same year as your truck. Otherwise your truck won’t charge properly. Besides that it’s a fairly easy swap.
There is a very descriptive article that I’ll link below that will hopefully answer questions you might have. If there’s anything else I can help you with please don’t hesitate to ask.
www.ford-trucks.com/articles/installing-an-oem-tachometer-in-a-1992-1996-f-150-or-bronco/
So I can’t just put the tach itself into my cluster? My original cluster is like your first one.
That is correct. The gauge cluster without a tach has a different plastic molding and less light bulbs than the gauge cluster that originally have a tach. Your gonna have to find a tach that is the same year as your vehicle in order to do this modification. Hope this helps😀👍.
Hey @YDOC I got a 94 f150 I'm looking to add a tachometer for but everyone says you can only buy the pre assembled one's. Did you buy this pre assembled or is there somewhere I can go to order or buy these? Awesome to know hooking it up is super easy as well
I bought this complete cluster out of a truck at a junk yard. You can’t just buy the tachometer section and add it to your pre existing gauge cluster because the plastic is molded a different way as well as the gauge lights are in a different spots. One thing you have to be careful of as well is to make sure you buy one that is the same year as your truck. If you don’t the truck won’t charge properly. I hope that answers your question Johnathan. Thanks for watching😀👍!
@@ydocproductions5593 So which truck did you take this out of? I have an 88 F150, I guess I'm curious what truck you pulled yours out of. Thanks!
@@guguimke5799 I got this gauge cluster out of an 1992 f-250 I bought at the junk yard. If you decide to do this modification you have to make sure the gauge cluster is the same year as your truck. This video is specifically made for trucks that are from 1992-1996/7. I’m not sure if this modification would work on your 88 f-150. I hope that answers your question, and thanks for watching😀👍!
Why switch them from one to the other? Are the inputs different? Would one from a 95 150 fit a 94 350?
Even though the wiring hookups are the same; the housings of the tachometer gauge cluster are different from the one without a tach. I can only recommend you use a tachometer gauge cluster that is the same year as your truck. If you don’t your truck won’t charge properly. Thanks for watching😀👍
Where did you find the tach cluster, and where would I find someone to find out my mileage my odometer is broken?
Hi Larry, I got mine out of a salvage yard for $30 if you wanted you could go to ebay for example, but expect to pay way more. The only issue with this swap I’d warn you about is you HAVE TO make sure your gauge cluster is the same year as your truck, otherwise your vehicle won’t charge properly. As for your mileage it’s almost impossible to guess what your current mileage would be. You could maybe get somewhere in the ballpark by getting a car fax report and back tracking your mileage from there but no way to get an exact number. Hope that helps!
Will this work on the 87 through 91 body styles as well? I have an 87 f150 that I would love to do this to.
I haven’t tried it myself but I’ve heard it works just the same as the 92-97 trucks. Just make sure you have a gauge cluster the same year as your truck. Good luck! Let me know how it works out😀👍
Did you disconnect the battery before taking the cluster out? Looking to do this on mine and don’t want to screw up the cluster.
You’re definitely gonna want to disconnect the battery before you remove it. Just make sure when you do swap out the gauge clusters that you get one that is the same year as your truck. Thanks for watching and have fun with the swap!😀👍
I put a 66,000 mile 2001 Lincoln Town Car complete harness / dash cluster - 4.6 & AOD & stock column in a 1940 Ford - can you guys tell me what donor dash & tachometer I need to do this swap ??? Thanks for any help - also I understand - I heard the Town Car power steering pump needs to be switched out to a Mustang or F-150 power steering pump - anybody know which 1 ?????
Sorry, but I’m not versed on Lincoln vehicles or the swaps your wanting to do. It sounds like an awesome project though! Good luck with it👍!
So you didn’t have to change any of the wiring?
All you have to do is make sure the gauge cluster is the exact same year as your truck otherwise your vehicle won’t charge properly. No wiring change is needed. Good luck with your swap😀👍
Is there anyway to do this to a 1983-1987 f250 6.9idi? I hate the look of the extra bulky tachometers and would prefer if I could put one in in the gauge cluster panel
Hi Jacob. I’m not quite sure if this would work for the 83-87 year trucks. I made this video specifically for the 92-97 year fords and have no experience with the 83-87 Fords.
Since I’ve never worked on one I can only guess. The best advice I can give is to go to your local U-Pull It and pull a tachometer gauge cluster and see if it has the same wiring hook ups in your existing truck. As you know those generation of vehicles weren’t computerized so you would also have to see if it’s even possible to take the existing odometer that’s currently in your truck and place it into the tach. cluster. I hope that helps😀👍!
I have a 96 f150, and I snagged a instrument cluster out of a 95. It was too good a price to pass up, but I’d really like to use it in my truck. Are there any resources out there on the exact differences between the two? I’m hoping there’s some way of modifying the 95 cluster to work in the 96. It might work as is. My truck is dated 08/95, and the cluster I got says A061095, which I’m guessing is august 6, 1995. Might have to bite the bullet and just pull the cluster out of the truck and compare them
Hi Colin, no modifications would be needed to swap in the cluster you bought. It sounds like the 2 gauge cluster you have are so close enough in year that it would work just fine.
I linked an article down below that does a really good job of not only explaining how to do the swap step by step, but also explaining how Ford changed the wiring of the gauge clusters throughout the production of the OBS trucks. I hope it answers any questions or concerns you might have.😀👍

Where can I purchase the RPM tachometer and housing for my 1988 F-150 automatic with a 302?
Hi Slade, I haven’t done a swap on the 1987-1991 ford trucks so I’m not too versed on it. I think the process is similar to the 92-1997 OBS ford trucks however. That being said I would look at your local salvage yard or eBay for one. One thing I tell everyone that wants to do this swap in their 92-97 trucks is to make sure you get a gauge cluster that is the same year as your truck otherwise it might not charge properly. Again I don’t know if that applies to your generation of truck but better safe than sorry. Hope that helps👍
So the MPH gauge you kept from the old one correct? And then swapped out basically everything else?
Also, when that third hand came in the video… freaked me out!!! Lol
Exactly, I used the original mph gauge because it held the original odometer so the miles are the same. If you’re gonna do this swap yourself make sure you get a gauge cluster that’s the same year as your truck.

Hi Max, I got the gauge cluster at my local junk yard. It was the entire cluster pulled out. If you go to get one yourself make sure you get one that is the same year as your truck. Otherwise the truck won’t charge properly. As long as it isn’t one from a diesel any gauge cluster will work (F-150,F-250,F-350, and even one’s out of a Ford Bronco). Hope that helps. @@ydocproductions5593 Oh wow that’s great!
So could I buy the gauges and swap them into my cluster Insted if getting an entire new cluster
That wouldn’t work because the tachometer gauge cluster and the one you have in your truck currently have different plastic moldings where the gauges sit inside of the cluster. The tachometer gauges aren’t physically compatible with the gauge cluster that doesn’t have a tach. Hope that answers your question.
If you do decide to do this swap MAKE SURE you get a gauge cluster that is the same year as your truck otherwise it won’t charge properly. 👍

Is there a list somewhere showing when the instruments changed? And/or can I just take everything but the speedo from the junkyard and put those into my existing cluster?
Hi Baron, great question! I’m not aware of any such chart that would list when the gauge clusters changed. When it comes to swapping in the gauges you bought at the junkyard they wont work in your current setup simply because the instrument cluster in your truck has plastic that isn’t molded to accept a tachometer gauge.
