Excellent start for a recent graduate! A few other tips if I may, Tanya, don't be afraid of presenting your workings. By that I mean sketches, whiteboards, paper prototypes etc. If you become more advanced and start running your own workshops or sessions with your development teams, capturing the exercises and the methodologies you use in them is great way to show your full gamut of skills. It's always worth remembering that the UI, even though very presentable, is the least important thing on your resume. Any User Experience Designer worth their salt should be all about the process. Thats what the top companies will be looking at, your thinking and how you approach a problem, that is the asset they want. Another thing, if you are a keen on getting into UX, you DON'T need to be good at UI Design. Its a bonus for sure but there are a few areas you can excel in on there own. You can choose to become a UX Researcher, or maybe you just want to be the designer that works on the problem in the team and whom works alongside a dedicated researcher and a dedicated UI designer. You don't have to be great at everything. And one last tip, it may seem silly to say but this role is all about people. Not just your users, but your stakeholders, your development team, your project managers, your marketing department and your sales team. Get to know these people as well as you can so you can handle the multiple personalities and traits of each one. A UX Designer, 100% of the time is a facilitator and will use the people around them to garner insight about the products your are designing. This is powerful in managing expectations and keeping people in check so no one person dominates the conversations.
How do you land a role as a visual design specialist (dedicated UI designer as you mentioned)? I’m going through a program right now and I hate the research aspect of it.

Glad to have found a designer who’s getting into the industry! Someone who’s going through the same process as us. Quick question, for case studies I have seen some people recommended keeping your online portfolio simple ( Your role, problem space, goal) then to Include the final design of the product at the top and then go through highlighting the big themes of each section of the design process. Then to have a Offline portfolio for in person interviews which would be more in depth version of your portfolio (including the in depth user personas, wireframes, design theme, etc.) They recommend doing it this way, since most job recruiters will only take 5-10mins during the initial recruiting process (depending on how many applicants they have) to go over your portfolio and it’s important to keep short. Do you have any insight on this ?
Heya! Yes, I've definitely seen that - I think it makes a ton of sense, especially because we do so much work outside of what we show in our case studies. From what I've gathered, a great way to do this is to also make your case study into a slide format (in google slides, keynote, whichever) and then add additional slides for sections where you did more, and use this to talk through your process at the interview. I'm working on one right now where I can add some results of my usability tests and preference testing for example, which I don't think that too many recruiters would be super interested in at the initial review but I think would add to my case study for an interview situation. I don't think it's always a necessity by any means, but hey gotta put our best foot forward right! :)

I heard you mention that you usually leave teasers on the top and i will say that ive talked to a ton of diff professionals about portfolios and they prefer for the final, actual work to be on the top so they can see it right away. BUT they do always say that they still love the process work and seeing it all. It's just if they're going through x amount of people, they dont want to waste more time scrolling and trying to find it if they could get the final prototype or whatever else it is right away.

I have to open a debate concerning the About page. I ended up taking mine out because that's what the interview is for. You can also add some personality flair to your resume that you host, but don't forget to have a version done with Word. Designed resumes usually do not translate well when put through job application software. I would definitely add some kind of indicator that your resume would download if you clicked that. Your portfolio looks pretty good. Could you please make a detailed tutorial Of how to make portfolio using square space and other necessary tools….!
It would be very helpful ❤️
Thank you! I will definitely add that to the list of videos to make! :)
I thought that accent sounded local 🇿🇦. I’m a Graphic Designer transitioning to UX/UI and web dev. Thanks so much for posting this 👍and I’m looking forward to learning more from you and your journey
A fellow saffa?? Nice! Thank you so much for watching! Good luck with your transition, I believe your design background will be helpful! :)
Pretty great ideas and it was like getting me over my stress, presently working on my projects and need to build up my portfolio. NO mentorship and someone to follow up is really frustrating. wish you could be my mentor through out this process.
A video showing how you made your squarespace site would be really helpful
I'm just starting on my portfolio and this was really inspiring and helpful, thank you for posting!!
Ahh thank you for watching!! :)
i found from this video very good info as designer, thanks for that.
Waowww.... So insightful - Thanks for the push coming up with content for the portfolio has always been my challenge but I could hear you say we 'should be simple yet professional' in the use of words..
Thank alot
thank you so much! That was very helpful! I'm a graphic design student but I'm switching career to UX/UI design :-)
Awesome help from an awesome designer, thank you so much!
Sooo many useful insights!!! Go girl!
Thanks a lot dear ! Take care of yourself and btw I miss South Africa 🇿🇦 ❤️ Love from Germany

Hey everyone! Thank you for your time and videos you make. I’m trying to enter into UX industry but it’s not simple when you’re 35 years old, lol
I’m studying Figma now by taking private classes with UX designer who has about 7 years experience.
I think it's definitely scary making a career change once you're deeper into a career path! It's awesome that you're taking Figma classes, good luck!! :)
Very very interesting video! I'm a junior UX designer, so this is so useful!
Woohoo! Thanks for watching! :)
It would be lovely to see you talk about Case studies. Would love to know about it more from your perspective.

Great video Tanya, really helpful thanks!
When I searched for this video, this is exactly what I had in mind and you exceeded my expectations. Clear definitions, well-explained concepts, quirky lol. I'm saving this to watch if I get stuck in my process. I want to ask a question tho, does a course on udemy+certificate carry the same weight as a Bootcamp certificate?
Hey Tanya 🌈🌈
I am a programmer buuuuut I've recently started my journey into UX design and your videos have been really helpful.
Thank you 🥺💐
Gayyy STFU

Oh do a tutorial on how to use square space to add portfolio please!
Very informative video. But don't take this the wrong way. You look soo pretty! 😍
@Tanya Niu, I have just subscribed to you. Respect from Thailand.
Please make separate 3 videos for your every type of portfolio.
1. UX case study
2. UI case study
3. Design Thinking case study
Hi Kashif, I will add them to the list! A lot of the time design thinking can be combined into UX and UI case studies depending on the scope of the project :) thanks for watching!
@@tanyaniu Thank you for the response. could you please make at least one video about UX/UI case study. That would be a great help. I am working with local clients. but I am planning to make a portfolio website for me.
This is one of the best intro to UX videos out there. What is the best UX course to get started?

Really great work Tanya!
Thank you so much Pontus!! :)
If it's in your main navigation, I would expect it to be a webpage
