I love your videos because you share things that people don’t talk about. I’ve been struggling to present my portfolio well and these tutorials are really helpful.
this is very helpful. I must say as a UX master student in my last semester I am disappointed they taught us NOTHING related to building a portfolio. I sent feedback to the school so they will hopefully incorporate this for future students.
I’m so glad that you find this helpful! I have a few more videos on portfolio too, don’t forget to go to my channel and check them out. And yes, most master programs can’t keep up with the speed of the industry. Glad you are searching for resource outside of school and investing in yourself.

Hello Aliena, Thanks for your good job. Please I'm new Ux Design learner. I'm working by myself and really need someone to discuss my practices with. Could you please assist me?

Hi!! greetings from Colombia :) I have 2 questions for you... I want to finish the Google certificate by May 31st. I'm already in course 2. I'm studying aprox 3 hours a day. Do you think is possible to accomplish that? And also, would you say that half a month is enough for doing the 6th course and another half month to do the 7th? (studying 3 hours a day) I love your content! Thank you in advance
Good question! I think if you are studying 3h a day you will be able to finish by May 31st 👍👍🔥 I want to point out that the timing is not fully on your control though, because there are around two rounds of user interviews for each project (1st project for course 1-5, 2nd project for course 6, and 3rd project for course 7). And if you want to take the most from the course, I suggest to seek opportunities for real life projects (collaborate with other designers/ software engineers/ work with actual clients). Or else, what you can do is to do three personal projects with a smaller interview scope to populate your first UX portfolio. This will be much more manageable in your case with the time constraint. And then you can use the three projects from the Google certificate to find a real life project, and then swap the real life project with one of the case study from Google certificate and find a full time role (Hope all these make sense! ) All the best!! ❤️
Im on my 4th week of coursera which week do they start teaching you how to make websites and designs using figma and adobe? and was shadowing a student an assignment from the coursera ux program?
You will learn about Figma starting from the third course. I know, it takes patience to go through the foundations to get to the tools. For my portfolio, shadowing a student was not part of the coursera course project. That was an internship program I did before more focusing on research. Hope this answers your question 👍
I actually considered that and decided not. I think if you want more job guarantee you can go with a bootcamp (with you can pay after you get the job). It is cheaper than diploma and provide you more actual work experience to showcase in your portfolio.
😂good to find my learning sister! I saw these courses and since I’m paying a monthly fee for them anyways, I just started to take all the courses that interest me 😄😄
This video was so good!! Thank you! I’m slowly pivoting into ux designing! I am currently a technical recruiter you definitely just eased my anxiety. I’m excited to get started and begin studying!
Hello Aliena, I don’t know if you’ll even see this but in case you do, I want to say thank you very much. I have been feeling very scared and intimidated by creating a portfolio and you have just wiped all that worry away. Thank you for being a great teacher and for sharing your knowledge. Thank you, thank you.
Hey Aliena! Currently I teach Business English to mainly Russian IT guys, many of whom are pursuing UX/UI as a future career. Also, I'm planning to do the Google UX course myself next year! Like you, I plan to be totally self-taught. I love your approach and I'm looking forward to learning more from someone who has been through the journey! I'll definitely see you more next year! Thanks!
Hi, the Google course is a very good start and probably the best when it comes to the money/value ratio. I would 100% recommend it. The one small thing I would also recommend is not to stop at that course; find another course as well. The one problem with the Google course is that it teaches how to be a UX Designer at Google, focusing on their processes and approaches. That is not how 99% of companies work. So, definitely start with that course and then consider finding another course (many of them are free on UA-cam) or perhaps a course with a reputable certificate. Hope that help you :)
A millions THANKS for making me find building a Porfolio bit easy for me unlike before. I have spent day, week searching for how to build a porfolio for myself. You are a real Mentor!
Thank you so so much for letting me know that my content is valuable. I spent years struggling with portfolio building. Still need to improve myself. Will share my learning in this channel!
I'm actually 1.5 years into learning how to be a full stack developer on my own. It feels like chasing my own tail when trying to learn on my own but even watching your videos regarding UX design helps me structure my project goals. Currently working on my second web portfolio from scratch ( for practice of course ) and I am currently struggling with designing it just as much as coding it. So thank you for this awesome content Aliena!
Good question. Usually I will export from Figma using *5 jpg for my design assets. For wireframes where I need to take a screenshot, I'm using mac so I just use the built in screenshot function. Hope this helps 😊

Hey btw, I'm also pivoting to UI/UX design from a German teacher 😄I'm very open to, like, a collaborative project to build a portfolio. Pls kindly hit me up for that 😃
I just don't like the idea to have to pay for a place to share my portfolio. Have mine on wix and received some feedback like : it looks unprofessional to have your website without a proper domain. 😶
Thanks for the video, I would not have chosen to delete the templates already provided by squarespace, I find it easier and faster to put the front images, but why not.
This is quite helpful. Thank you. I'm building my portfolio from scratch using Webflow. It's such a pain. Hopefully I'm not wasting my time when I could be using a template. But I want to prove that I can design a website without a template
Glad it was helpful! It's a great skill to know Webflow as a designer. I've used it too and the learning curve was not easy at first. But the design of webflow resemble more of what front engineers actually need to work with. I think it's going to benefit you in the long run and keep it up!
I'm currently in the final stretch of finishing the Google UX Design course and am still finding things a bit nerve wracking. Thank you for making this video! I was incredibly nervous about making a portfolio.
Hi :) From my experience, creating a portfolio will never become 100% easy, maybe just easier. Even when I am building a portfolio, I am stressing, and sending that portfolio by clicking the 'send' button on the job application feels every time like the first time. So, that is definitely an experience that everyone has. One thing I can recommend (if you're interested in a recommendation) is to go through your portfolio with a mentor on ADPList. It's free and can help you prepare your portfolio and not be so nervous about 'Could I have made it better?' and all those thoughts that usually go through your head when a recruiter doesn't answer :) Hope that helps :)
Hi Aliena, thanks for the great content! I was wondering if there is any way that we can import our diagrams or customer journey map into squarespace in a format other than images? I want them to be very high quality..
Hi, I think using images is the best option, especially when it comes to speed optimization. Creating something more complex can potentially cause problems when opening websites from different devices or browsers. A small hack or tip: diagrams are good, but in 98% of the cases, no one will look into them in detail. Most of the time, the UX Lead will scan them and expect you to present them (if you, of course, get a chance to do so). So, even though I am not sure how to upload a diagram in another format, I would probably ask more in-depth questions like 'Why would you want to display the diagram in better quality in the first place?' and 'Will the benefits outweigh the potential time spent on solving that or the potential problems?' I just analyzed 312 UX Portfolios, and to be honest, everyone was using images. Hope that helps :) even though I did not answer the question :))))
