    I would love if you could revisit this and talk about onion rings, floating rings, loop tatted rings, and lock joins to start. And of course all things having to do with a double shuttle pattern.

    Kate, I have been using two balls of thread (same color), using one for the ball thread and the other for the needle thread. Just cut the needle thread the length you want then you only have to weave in the needle thread and start again instead of cutting and weaving in both end. Also if I only have 1 ball I pull the end from inside the ball and do the same. Saves thread and strengthens the tatting by not having to weave in both ends. Hope you try it and let me know if it works for you. Happy tatting. 🌸

    It would be helpful to show the exceptions.
    Saying to disregard the instructions for a shuttle and ball is all very well, but if it is that simple it'd then serve to show how to adapt to those 5% of times when you do need to change how you tat.
    In particular I'm thinking of times when patterns where they say to leave a gap in the work, where there would only be a single strand of thread. If I leave a gap using a needle then there will be two threads once I start the next step, and closing the ring becomes complicated.
    Maybe because I'm a beginner, but any suggestions (like, do I simply just cut my thread and leave one strand and then reconnect after the gap?) would be helpful for those times.

    great info, Katie! thanks! i have had trouble knowing when to RW or not interpreting the shuttle pattern, also what happens when i see "switch shuttle." After attempting the shuttle, it helps some to figure it out but so far with limited success😜 even better, I am a lefty and needle tat left-handed and have discovered i can use shuttle tat with the shuttle in my right hand like a righty (which makes following tutorials and patterns infinitely easier!). a work in progress😉

    • @RustiKate
      @RustiKate  4 роки тому +1

      The switch shuttle reference is also one that most often can just be ignored, when needle tatting. With some patterns it does require special steps, but it is more to switch stitches or directions that can be seen in the pattern image. I always use the image as a guide for every pattern no matter the type or who designed it, so helpful. I use the tatting go to rule that I shared in my RW video to keep me on track when RW in vintage patterns, that and again using image as guide, it really really helps.
      Crafting tutorials defenitly don't make it easy for lefties. But I do have to say that some of the very best artist and crafters I know are left handed.

    I am trying to figure out a doily pattern with a series of rings that asks for outer thread method for join, never the less to say it's a pattern for shuttle tatting.
    Best wishes and thank you once again, from Argentina!!! 🇦🇷

      Adelia, if you can send me a picture of the pattern image I can see if I can give you any help. Like I said in video, most can be done by ignoring shuttle references, but stitch techniques can be tricky sometimes. If you are on facebook, facebook message through the rustikate page is best way way to send photos.

    How would one do this if a pattern says 2 shuttles. I have tried for years to make a pattern that has been handed down to me and I just can't get how a shuttle is worked. So if it's possible, I would like to know how. I already know how to needle tat, as I learned from watching your old videos years ago!

  • @sandyhamblen258

    I have a current pattern for a bookmark and they do not close the loop in the pattern. If I add closing the loop, it ruins it. How do I convert this? I was really thinking there was more to converting because my outcome when I join to previous ring is squished and awkward looking.
    Diamond 1
    Ring A: 5 - 2 - 5
    Ring B: 5 + (prev ring) 12 - 5
    Ring C: 5 + (prev ring) 2 - 5
    Ring D: 5 + (prev ring) 12 - 5
    Ring E: 5 + (prev ring) 2 - 5
    Ring F: 5 + (prev ring) 12 - 5
    Ring G: 5 + (prev ring) 2 - 5
    Split Ring H: 5 + (prev ring) 1 - 5 / 5 + (adjacent ring) 1 - 5
    All of this person’s patterns are like this, without closing their rings. Any help is greatly appreciated.
    Sincerely,
    Sandy

    qhar did the second pattern mean when it said opposite? Also have you done a video on what to do when the pattern calls for two shuttles?

    • @RustiKate
      @RustiKate  Рік тому

      I will have to look back at this video and get back to you on what was meant by "opposite".
      As far as the question about two shuttles, this video is the only one I have up on shuttles used in patterns. But the answer to what you are asking is simply that 95% of the time if a pattern calls for two shuttles and you are needle tatting, you simply disregard the shuttle reference. That is true for when it says one or two shuttles.
      Hope that helps.

  • @annettemocek4056

    Katie, how do you determine how much thread to leave on the needle tail before starting the first ring?

    • @RustiKate
      @RustiKate  4 роки тому +1

      My standard amount is 12 inches of tail thread, and 2 feet of thread between needle and thread ball. This is for small to medium projects. For larger and more complex projects I increase the thread amount between the needle and ball thread, usually to 3 feet. You can really start with as much as you want, but more than that can get messy to handle, so if project requires more than 3 feet of that thread and 12 inches of tail, than I typically will opt to just use what I have, tie off and add more thread when I run out (for large projects it's easier for me to do that). But most of the time I really don't need more than 2-3 feet of thread between needle and thread ball, and 12 inches of tail. Hope that helps! :)

      Have you figure this out ok? It can be tricky figuring out how many shuttles are needed at times and often needle tatting instructions are very brief.
